Vikings, Packers in division duel (AFP)

The Minnesota Vikings will try to end Green Bay's four-year NFC North Division reign when they play the Packers in a winner-takes-all NFL regular-season finale on Sunday. Both teams are destined for the playoffs, but for each there will be plenty on the line at Green Bay's iconic Lambeau Field. The winner will claim not only the division title but also the National Football Conference number three seed, and a guaranteed home game in the first round of the post-season.

Brandon Marshall's ankle on mend, LB hopes to play Sunday (The Associated Press)

Brandon Marshall's sprained right ankle aches. The Denver Broncos inside linebacker is dealing with a tender ankle and the death of his best friend. Denver Broncos are now Brock Osweiler's team (The Associated Press)

Peyton Manning is a backup for the first time since replacing an injured Todd Helton on Sept. 24, 1994, during his freshman year at Tennessee. After standing on the sideline in street clothes or watching his longtime understudy on the big screen the last six weeks, Manning's left foot is healthy enough for him to play again. Coach Gary Kubiak is sticking with Osweiler as his starter even with the league's only five-time MVP available Sunday when the Broncos (11-4) host the Chargers (4-11).

The top 10 things still up for grabs in Week 17 of the NFL season (Shutdown Corner)

We've seen a few other Week 17s that have been more wide open, as far as playoff scenarios go. This season, most of the playoff spots are spoken for, and mostly we're just left to wonder about is seeding. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy: $10 could win you $20K in our $200K contest for Week 17 ] But, as usual, there is still plenty on the line in the final week of the NFL season. Not just in terms of playoff seeding and spots, but individual awards and accomplishments as well. So a lot will be settled in the 16 games on Sunday: The NFC North There is one game that directly impacts a division title or playoff berth for both teams in Week 17, and it’s the Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers. The NFL could have done worse for the flexed game on “Sunday Night Football” than two old rivals battling with a division crown on the line. It’s simple: The winner gets the North title. The loser is still in the playoffs, however, as a wild card. The Packers have won the last four NFC North titles. The Vikings haven’t won it since 2009. It would be a great accomplishment for Mike Zimmer’s crew to win the division, and of course get the home game that comes with it. The Packers simply need to get back on track. Both teams will go to the playoffs no matter what, but this game is still the most meaningful of the 16 on Sunday. The other two division titles

Week 17 Coaches on the hot seat - How bad will Black Monday be? (Shutdown Corner)

On Monday, members of the Shutdown Corner team circulated emails on the coaches who are most likely to find themselves unemployed next week, after their respective final games of the season. But on a list of seven names, Philadelphia Eagles’ coach Chip Kelly was not included. On Tuesday night, though, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie shocked the NFL when it was announced that he’d “released” Kelly, cutting him loose before his third season in Philadelphia had ended, and less than a year after giving Kelly full control of the roster. In a press conference, Lurie acknowledged that it was a gamble to hire Kelly away from the University of Oregon three years ago, when he had no experience at the pro level, and the risk/reward proposition didn’t work out in the Eagles’ favor. So that brings us to three head coaching openings – in Philadelphia, Tennessee and Miami – and we are still four days from Black Monday. Could there be as many as seven more openings? The other coaches on the hot seat as we head into the final weekend of the 2015 regular season, ranked from hottest seat (in other words, most likely to be unemployed) to warmest seat (i.e. he may not be on his way out after all). Chuck Pagano, Indianapolis What a season the Colts have had. On Tuesday, they had to sign two quarterbacks off the street, Josh Freeman and Ryan Lindley, to give them three healthy bodies at the position, along with Stephen Morris, signed off Philly’s practice squad last week. None of which have any experience in their offense. At least one of them will start against the Titans, with the Colts’ (tiny, but still possible) playoff chances in the balance. Mike McCoy, San Diego Yes, the Chargers have had some key injuries on offense, including several on the offensive line and most notably to receiver Keenan Allen. And this is only McCoy’s third season in San Diego. But Philip Rivers isn’t getting any younger, the franchise could be headed to Los Angeles, and the team doesn’t appear to be getting better on McCoy’s watch. The Chargers were 9-7 with a playoff appearance in his first year, and started the 2014 season with an 8-4 mark. But since a 23-14 home loss to the New England Patriots in Week 14 last year, the Chargers are 5-14.

How much you'd win by betting on the Colts to make the playoffs (Shutdown Corner)

Not that you care, but a decade ago, I made a nine-team parlay comprised of upsets ranging from mild to wild on the opening day of the NCAA Tournament. If I remember correctly, it was a dollar bet that paid out $8,000. Obviously, the first eight teams won, and the ninth lost a one-possession game in the final minute, because of course. It was tough to swallow, but I never figured I'd even get to that gut punch. I share that only to offer a modicum of hope to Indianapolis Colts fans hoping to hit a 10-team parlay that would send their team to the playoffs as the AFC South champions and the No. 4 seed. As we laid out in our weekly NFL playoff picture , the Colts (7-8) needed 10 games to go their way after beating the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The first of those things — the Denver Broncos defeating the Cincinatti Bengals — happened against long odds, as Brock Osweiler & Co. stormed back from a two-touchdown deficit. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy: $10 could win you $20K in our $200K contest for Week 17 ] Now, the Colts simply have to beat the Tennessee Titans at 1 p.m. on Sunday — far from crazy, since Indianapolis is currently a six-point favorite at home — and then root for these eight things to happen: — The Jacksonville Jaguars upset the Houston Texans. — The Baltimore Ravens upset the Bengals. — The Buffalo Bills upset the New York Jets. — The Atlanta Falcons beat the New Orleans Saints. — The Dolphins upset the New England Patriots. — The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Cleveland Browns. — The Oakland Raiders upset the Kansas City Chiefs. — The Broncos beat San Diego Chargers. The Jaguars, Ravens, Dolphins and Raiders are all at least touchdown underdogs this week. Using VegasInsider.com's parlay calculator , a $100 bet on those eight scenarios pays $157,178.82 based on current odds at various Las Vegas sportsbooks, so get to Sin City if you're an Indy fan. If you had the Broncos beating the Bengals and add the Colts beating the Titans, then you're talking $336,022.14. But let's not forget the fact the Colts could be starting either Josh Freeman or Ryan Lindley  five days after signing their fourth- and fifth-string quarterbacks, since Andrew Luck, Matt Hasselbeck and Charlie Whitehurst might all be unable to play due to injury. With my luck, the Colts, Jaguars, Ravens, Bills, Falcons, Dolphins, Steelers and Raiders would all win, and then Osweiler — the same guy who kept this ridiculous 10-team parlay alive — would throw a pick-six to lose to the Chargers in overtime. Jaguars owner says head coach Gus Bradley will return in 2016 (Shutdown Corner)

Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan announced Tuesday what many suspected but what had yet to be anywhere close to official. Gus Bradley will be back at head coach in 2016. Here's the full release ( via Jacksonville.com ) from Khan, issued by the team: "I spoke to Gus Bradley today to confirm to him that he will continue as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016. It’s evident to see how far we’ve come in many aspects of our game, and Gus deserves a lot of credit for that progress. It’s also evident the considerable work that remains to be done to be where we expect to be at this time next season, which is well above where we stand today.  And Gus understands that. Dave Caldwell and I also spoke today and we are both confident that Gus will make 2016 the best year of his career. In the meantime, I expect his coaching staff and team to respond favorably to this news in preparation for Houston on Sunday and then begin thinking about what more they can provide next season. We have high ambitions." It has been a baby-step improvement in three seasons under Bradley — a 4-12 record his first season, followed by 3-13 in 2014 and 5-10 this season with one game remaining, against the playoff-bound Houston Texans. The team had started letting out whispers around midseason, right about when it was clear Blake Bortles was a promising quarterback and the team was beating bottom-rung opponents, that Bradley was likely to return. But the recent one-score losses to the San Diego Chargers and Tennessee Titans (two teams likely picking ahead of them in next year's draft) were not a good look, nor was Sunday's throttling by the New Orleans Saints. Still, there's promise here. Bortles, Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns, Julius Thomas, T.J. Yeldon and an improved  offensive line make up an exciting nucleus on one side of the ball. Losjng No. 3 overall pick Dante Fowler was a blow the team never recovered from defensively, and it will be imperative for the team to make big strides on that side of the ball — Bradley's specialty — for him to continue working with the team beyond 2016. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. NFL Power Rankings: A change at the top? Nope, not necessary (Shutdown Corner)

I've never been a big fan of the notion that, when it comes to rankings, when you lose matters so much. We've all seen it before. Team A loses in Week 3. Team B loses in Week 10. Team A goes higher in the Week 11 rankings because Team B's loss was more recent. It doesn't make any logical sense. Neither does the idea that when the No. 1 team in college football or basketball rankings loses, it has to move down. So I'm not doing that here. The Carolina Panthers have been the best team in the NFL this season, and they're not moving out of the No. 1 spot just because they lost last week. Sunday's 20-13 loss at the Atlanta Falcons wasn't pretty, but it wasn't that damaging. The Panthers are still a home win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers away from clinching the No. 1 seed in the NFC. That would make them the sixth 15-1 team in NFL history. The Panthers haven't shown too many cracks all season. Losing by a touchdown at a division rival with little to play for other than the chase for 16-0 isn't some sign of impending doom. It was just a loss. Everyone else has at least two of them this season. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy: $10 could win you $20K in our $200K contest for Week 17 ] The Panthers were getting everyone's best shot, especially as they got deeper into the season without a loss. In many ways the loss could help them, because now the undefeated sideshow is over. Instead of being asked constantly about a perfect season, they can just go back to being a normal (and very good) football team heading into the playoffs. It's not to say the Panthers are unbeatable, especially if and when they face another very good team like the Arizona Cardinals, because we've seen 15-1 teams and a 16-0 team lose in the playoffs. But when you look at entire canvas, the Panthers are still the No. 1 team in the NFL. And Cam Newton is still the MVP. That doesn't change just because their loss came more recently than losses by other teams. Here are Shutdown Corner's power rankings after Week 16: 32. San Francisco 49ers (4-11, Last week: 31) Jarryd Hayne is back on the active roster, and he had 27 rushing yards and 20 receiving yards on five carries in Sunday's game. I hope he keeps getting chances as he learns American football, because his story is really fun . 31. Cleveland Browns (3-12, LW: 30) Johnny Manziel went 13 of 32 for 136 yards on Sunday. If this last stretch was an audition, I think he needs a strong finish. Too inconsistent for a team to feel good building around him next offseason. 30. Tennessee Titans (3-12, LW: 29) At the end of the day, losing is beneficial for the Titans because of draft position. But that was one terrible, uninspiring performance. Oh well, most things in Tennessee will look different next season anyway. 29. Dallas Cowboys (4-11, LW: 28)

Brock Osweiler just keeps playing, oblivious to Broncos' QB drama (Shutdown Corner)

DENVER — By leading the Denver Broncos to a huge overtime win Monday night, Brock Osweiler got his team closer to a bye week in the playoffs ... which gives Peyton Manning another week to get healthy. Oh, the irony. Ah, yes, the Broncos' quarterback issue. It's impossible to spend any time in Denver and not hear about it. But it's probably best to stop handicapping the Broncos' quarterback situation until Manning is fully recovered from a foot injury because the popular opinion changes week to week — sometimes even half by half. Osweiler looks like the answer, until he doesn't and it seems like the door is back open for Manning to start again. After a 20-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in which Osweiler played very well, the roulette ball is back on Osweiler. We'll spin the wheel again on Sunday. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy: $10 could win you $20K in our $200K contest for Week 17 ] This must be peculiar for Osweiler. Imagine having to answer questions every week about the possibility of keeping your job. Imagine an entire region debating it constantly, with opinions changing entirely based on how you performed the previous week. Osweiler is trying to lead the Broncos, playing an impossibly tough position, all with the NFL's only five-time MVP waiting to come back at some point from a foot injury. "I don't hear it," Osweiler said about the media speculation. "A coach once told me — no offense, anybody — but close your ears to all that and focus on your job. I'm very appreciative for that advice."

Agent: Weddle fined $10K by Chargers (The Associated Press)

Agent David Canter says San Diego Chargers safety Eric Weddle has been fined $10,000 by the team for remaining on the sideline at halftime of a Dec. 20 home game to watch his daughter dance in a program sponsored by the team's cheerleaders. According to agent, Chargers are shoving Eric Weddle out the door (Shutdown Corner)

The San Diego Chargers picked safety Eric Weddle with the 37th overall pick in 2007, and Weddle has played exceedingly well for the Chargers, named to the Pro Bowl three times and an Associated Press All-Pro selection twice. Last week, after San Diego played what may have been its final game in the city - it is one of three franchises vying for the opportunity to move to Los Angeles - Weddle was one of three team leaders, along with Philip Rivers and Malcom Floyd as well as head coach Mike McCoy, to spend time circling the field, signing autographs and chatting with fans. After nearly two hours, Weddle laid down on his back at midfield. Though he is in the final year of the five-year, $40 million contract he signed with the team in 2011, Weddle certainly could have re-signed with the only NFL team he's ever known. But now, that seems highly unlikely. Via a tweet from his agent , David Canter, which San Diego Union-Tribune reporter Kevin Acee followed up on , the Chargers fined Weddle $10,000 last week for remaining on the field at halftime of that home finale against the Miami Dolphins to watch his daughter perform as part of a dance ceremony. "Weddle was stunned," Acee wrote. "He was also furious." The player did not tell coaches he planned to stay on the field, and he should have, as Acee notes. Plus But a fine for "conduct detrimental to the team" levied to a player who has been a stalwart member of the defense and organization for being a proud dad is excessive. Plus, the Chargers were up 23-0 at halftime. On Monday, San Diego placed Weddle on injured reserve with a groin injury, against his wishes, and, acording to Canter, told him he couldn't travel with his teammates to Denver for the final game of the season because the plane is too small. As of last week, Weddle hadn't ruled out a return to the organization, but that was before the events of the last several days.

Who has the inside track for the top pick in the 2016 NFL draft? (Shutdown Corner)

There's not of ton of mystery heading into Week 17 in terms of the playoffs, but there still is some doubt over the other end of the spectrum. The first pick in the 2016 NFL draft is still up for grabs, and it's down to two teams. Either the Tennessee Titans or Cleveland Browns will end up with that honor, and the Titans appear to be in the driver's seat to pick first overall. Both teams are 3-12 heading into the final week of action, but the first tiebreaker after overall record is strength of schedule and the Titans have a significant edge there. Their opponents have combined to win only 49.2 percent of their games, while the Browns' opponents have been significantly stronger at a .532 win percentage. And assuming both teams lose, there won't be a change in the order. The Titans play the Indianapolis Colts, who sit at 7-8, and the Browns face the 9-6 Pittsburgh Steelers. So that would mean that the Titans, who took Marcus Mariota second overall a year ago, managed to move up in the draft. Mariota performed admirably at times, although injuries knocked him off course a bit. So we know they aren't taking a quarterback first overall if they keep the pick. What then? Offensive line would make sense, and Ole Miss tackle Laremy Tunsil and maybe Notre Dame tackle Ronnie Stanley have been mentioned in a few top-five conversations. Or they could go defense and take Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa or Florida State's Jalen Ramsey, but that might not represent the best value and need together. The good news is that we're four months away from them needing to narrow down a pick. And the Browns? They likely would consider a quarterback, even with Johnny Manziel getting a chance to prove himself. But is there won worthy? Cal's Jared Goff and Memphis' Paxton Lynch are most often mentioned as possibilities there, but we're a long way from knowing if either is worthy of that spot. Here's the full current draft order for the teams currently out of the playoffs entering Week 17: Pick Team Record Opponent win percentage 1 Tennessee Titans 3-12 0.492 2 Cleveland Browns 3-12 0.536 3 San Diego Chargers 4-11 0.523 4 Dallas Cowboys 4-11 0.529 5 San Francisco 49ers 4-11 0.552 6 Jacksonville Jaguars 5-10 0.471 7 Miami Dolphins 5-10 0.475 8 Baltimore Ravens 5-10 0.506 9 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 6-9 0.483 10 New York Giants 6-9 0.492 11 New Orleans Saints 6-9 0.508 12 Philadelphia Eagles 6-9 0.513 13 Detroit Lions 6-9 0.536 14 Chicago Bears 6-9 0.544 15 Indianapolis Colts 7-8 0.498 16 Buffalo Bills 7-8 0.510 17 Oakland Raiders 7-8 0.511 18 St. Louis Rams 7-8 0.527 19 Atlanta Falcons 8-7 0.471 20 Pittsburgh Steelers 9-6 0.511 - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Chiefs clinch playoffs on nailbiter, win ninth straight after 1-5 (Shutdown Corner)

Not since the 1970 Cincinnati Bengals (of Sam Wyche and Bob Trumpy fame) has a team that started 1-5 made the postseason, but the Kansas City Chiefs have summoned the spirit of their baseball bretheren and made a breathtaking run to the playoffs by winning their ninth straight game. Combined with their hard-fought 17-13 win over the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers losing to the lowly Baltimore Ravens, the Chiefs are in the playoffs. They still can do more — the AFC West is still up for grabs if the Denver Broncos falter. None of this makes sense by October thinking, when we saw the Chiefs cough away Week 2 against the Broncos, get gutted by the Green Bay Packers and Cincinnati Bengals, lose a bizarre heartbreaker at home to the Chicago Bears and do the same on the road to the Minnesota Vikings. That got the Chiefs to 1-5, and had it not been for the Kansas City Royals World Series afterglow, the town might have shown up at Arrowhead Stadium with pitchforks and Andy Reid the target before the Week 7 game against the Steelers. But that game — a post-Jamaal Charles 23-13 defensive gem of a win — kickstarted a historic run that seems to have flown below the collective awareness of most of the country. Folks, forget how they'redoing this, including by needing late-game heroics and luck against the Browns. The Chiefs are something to behold. Yes, Johnny Manziel ran for 108 frustrating yards and had the Browns in striking distance as the clock ticked down, evoking memories of the escsape job against the San Diego Chargers a few weeks ago. But celebrate the fact that this team has overcome injury and odds to overcome a major hole to become the team no one is talking about despite their league-best current win streak (with the Carolina Panthers' ending at 14; the Arizona Cardinals can tie them at nine). Five straight losses. Then nine wins. What's next? Jeremy Maclin had another big game, and rookie cornerback Marcus Peters made perhaps the play of the game, with an interception following a fluky Chiefs INT gave the Browns decent field position. That's the way they're winning games: with timely plays and mental toughness, style points be damned. They're in, and they have more to prove. The doubters will scoff at the way they beat the Chargers and Browns, and many will pick the Chiefs to be first-round exits in the playoffs as they've been every years since — gulp — 1993. But there's something fascinating about a team that has done what the Chiefs have done, and until further notice we have to assume they're doing something right. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. The 12 plays that have defined the 2015 NFL season (Shutdown Corner)

The 2015 season has been interesting. To say the least. Through 14 weeks, there are only 11 teams above .500, and one of them — the Carolina Panthers — have reached unprecedented heights, standing at 14-0, led by MVP candidate Cam Newton. And yet for all the compelling storylines — and there have been many — we also have had a season that has been sullied by quarterback injuries (there have been 51 starting quarterbacks to date, with the number certain to rise) and poor officiating. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy: $10 could win you $25K in our $250K contest for Week 16 ] As the calendar year is set to turn, we looked back at the 12 plays that helped shape and define the season to date — some more impressive than others. So, why 12? One for every day of Christmas, maybe — why not? Our gift to you ... Brady to Gronk for third TD vs. Steelers — Week 1 In an NFL offseason that was dominated by one story — deflate-gate — this season-opening game was as anticipated as it was awkward, with the commissioner opting to skip out on the New England Patriots’ banner-raising ceremony. Tom Brady set out to beat Roger Goodell in court, which he did (for now), and then set his sights on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Brady was terrific in the game throwing for four touchdowns, three of them to Rob Gronkowski (whom the Steelers occasionally tried to over), in this entertaining Thursday opener. Eagles hit on Tony Romo — Week 2 In one of the biggest early-season-shifting plays, Philadelphia Eagles rookie linebacker Jordan Hicks slammed Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo to the turf, knocking him out for half the season. It came a week after Dez Bryant suffered a foot fracture that also saw his season cut in half, and with it came down the hopes for the Cowboys, who went 12-4 in 2014 and came within an eyelash of being the Green Bay Packers and advancing to the NFC championship game. Instead, the Cowboys have limped to last place in the NFC East this season, even with Romo (who later was re-injured) and Bryant returning to the field later. They’ll be starting their fourth quarterback of the season in Week 16. Kam Chancellor hit on Calvin Johnson — Week 4 This one had a lot of layers to it. The Detroit Lions had started the season 0-3, and the Seattle Seahawks 1-2. After the Seahawks lost their first two games, Kam Chancellor — who held out all training camp and preseason — rode back on his white horse, reported to the team and helped deliver a shutout in Week 3. They then were dominating the Lions for most of the game the following week, but the score was close and the Lions had a chance to win when Calvin Johnson caught a pass and appeared to be scoring a potential game-winning TD in the final 1:50. But Chancellor slammed Johnson at the goal line and caused a fumble that rolled toward the back of the end zone. Assisting the ball out of bounds was K.J. Wright, who inadvertently broke an obscure but valid rule — illegal batting — that went uncalled, setting a tone for an NFL season marred by shaky refereeing. It should have been Lions ball, but the Seahawks ran out the clock instead and were lucky to do so. Remember, the Lions’ 2014 season ended on officiating controversy in the playoff loss to the Cowboys. This one felt no better. LeVeon Bell walk-off TD vs. Chargers — Week 5 Another week, another officiating blunder. The 2-2 Steelers were down 20-17 at the San Diego Chargers (although it felt like a Steelers home game at Qualcomm) with 2:56 to go. Or make that 2:38 — the stadium’s clock operator inadvertently allowed 18 seconds to run off the clock following the touchback (the clock never should have moved). It put the Steelers, already at a disadvantage with Mike Vick in place of Ben Roethlisberger, in an even tougher position to tie or win the game. But Vick drove them down to the 1-yard line with five seconds left on the clock. You thought Mike Tomlin would go for the tie? Heh. No, he called a direct snap to Le’Veon Bell, who powered his way into the end zone for the walk-off touchdown. Bell bailed out the clock operator and the side judge, although they later were disciplined for their gaffes. Cam to Olsen TD in final minute at Seattle — Week 6 This was the turning point for the Carolina Panthers, who were opening eyes at 4-0 but hardly atop most people’s NFL power rankings. Prior to this game these teams had faced four times since the start of the 2012 season, and the Seattle Seahawks had won all four, including in the divisional round of the playoffs in Seattle in January. But the Panthers had taken leaps and bounds since then, led by their Superman, Cam Newton, in what would be the birth of his MVP-candidate campaign. Newton overcame a miserable first half and a third-quarter pick to deliver a heroic comeback from down 13 late in the third to a 27-24 win in the final 32 seconds. Newton found Greg Olsen — the Panthers’ two most irreplaceable offensive players — for a 26-yard score for the win … the fifth of 14 straight to start the season. Colts trick play fail vs. Patriots — Week 6 No play sums up the Indianapolis Colts’ miserable season like this one. Like the famous line from “This Is Spinal Tap,” there’s a fine line between clever and stupid. This one most definitely was stupid. A popular Super Bowl media pick, the Colts stumbled out of the gates at 0-2 but won two straight prior to their big matchup with their longtime tormentors, the Patriots. And after playing well to start the game against the 4-0 Patriots, the Colts imploded. Emblematic of that moment was the most bizarre play of the season: an ill-fated, mishandled fake punt that the Patriots weren’t the least bit surprised by. Griff Whalen became a national goal and meme subject by snapping the ball to Colt Anderson, resulting in a loss of downs … and of self-respect. Peyton Manning’s fourth INT vs. Chiefs — Week 10 Was this the final pass of Peyton Manning’s career? There still were high hopes this season that a healthy Manning might come back, armed with strong receivers and buoyed by a great defense, to lead the Broncos to greatness this season. But he seldom got on track, throwing interceptions in every game this season — including four in the loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that resulted in the most nightmarish Manning stat line ever: 5 of 20 passing, 35 yards, zero TDs, four picks, a fumble and two sacks before being yanked for Brock Osweiler. Manning soon was treated for a foot injury and hasn’t reemerged on the field since. His career is very much in doubt now, and what an ignominious coda that might be for one of the league’s ambassadors and finest quarterbacks ever. C.J. Anderson OT run vs. Patriots — Week 12 Two weeks after the Manning disaster, the Broncos rebounded for a massive matchup against the unbeaten Patriots with playoff seeding on the line. Osweiler started his second game and played well, rallying the Broncos from down 14 points to force overtime. Once there, Broncos running back C.J. Anderson, who had been missing for much of what was supposed to be his breakout season, ripped off a 48-yard touchdown run — the longest allowed by an improved Patriots defense — for the victory and the end of New England’s undefeated season at 10-0. Even though the Patriots dropped from the top seed to the third spot, they’ve since regained supremacy in the AFC. Ravens blocked FG vs. Browns — Week 12 A meaningless game between two teams that could earn the first two picks of the 2016 NFL draft ended in stunning fashion — unless you’re familiar with the history of the Cleveland Browns even the slightest bit. Losing games in inventive ways is their sad trademark, and this one deserves a special spot on the mantle. Botching the final three plays of what could have been a hard-earned win behind Austin Davis, the Browns had the would-be game-winning kick not only blocked but also run back for a score by the Baltimore Ravens’ Will Hill. Even in losing a game that helped their draft stock in yet another lost season, the way the Browns lost just added a new wing to the Factory of Sadness. Miracle in Motown: Rodgers to Rodgers — Week 13 What was wrong with the Green Bay Packers? That was the chorus for most of the season that hadn’t quite looked right since the start, and it appeared as if they were headed for their fifth loss in a six-game stretch after starting the season 6-0. The Detroit Lions led 23-21, and the Packers stood at their own 21-yard line with one timeout remaining. The game appeared to be over when Aaron Rodgers was taken down after getting the ball back on a lateral from Richard Rodgers. But the Lions’ Devin Taylor was guilty of a facemask, setting up an untimed down from the Green Bay 39. On the final play of the game, it was Rodgers to Rodgers — in reverse — as the quarterback hit the tight end on a stunning Hail Mary touchdown that saved the Packers’ season and highlighted the Lions’ chronic inability to close out games they should have won. Dalton hurting thumb vs. Steelers — Week 14 Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati Bengals were one of the most pleasant surprises of the 2015 season after they won their first eight games and Dalton entered the MVP discussion. After two losses, the Bengals regrouped with two blowout victories entering a key matchup against the Steelers — win and the Bengals would have swept them and ended years of inferiority. But on the Bengals’ eighth offensive play of the game, Dalton was picked at the Pittsburgh 7-yard line (a terrific, shoe-top INT by defensive lineman Stephon Tuitt) and in trying to make the tackle, Dalton suffered a broken thumb. The Bengals went onto lose the game, losing their cool at times against the Steelers, and aren’t sure when Dalton might return. Odell Beckham Jr.’s melee with Josh Norman — Week 15 The battle between the Carolina Panthers and New York Giants last week, for better or certainly for worse, might have been the game of the season. Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and Panthers cornerback Josh Norman reprised their war of words in the week leading up onto the field, where it turned ugly. The unnecessary roughness penalties racked up — three of OBJ, two for Norman — and it resulted in a one-game suspension for Beckham, upheld by appeal. The ugliness almost trumped what happened to be a great game, with the Giants erasing a 28-point second-half deficit but the Panthers hanging on for the victory. Newton calmly led the Panthers down for the game-winning kick in what might have been an MVP-clinching moment. Oh, and by the way, the Panthers took one more step toward completing only the NFL’s third unbeaten regular season since the 1970 merger, winning their 15th straight with zero losses. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Raiders edge Chargers in possible Oakland farewell (AFP)

The Oakland Raiders, playing possibly their final Bay Area home game, defeated San Diego 23-20 in overtime Thursday in an NFL contest between two teams eliminated from playoff contention. Oakland's Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 31-yard field goal 6:55 into overtime to create the final margin and the Chargers could not manage a first down after that, an incomplete pass sealing Oakland's triumph. The Raiders (6-8) and Chargers (4-10), along with the St. Louis Rams, are looking at moving to Los Angeles as early as next season, Oakland not having a new stadium lease in place for 2016.

Week 16 Coaches on the hot seat (Shutdown Corner)

Under coach Tom Coughlin, the 2015 New York Giants are fighting, but they are just not finishing: seven of their eight losses have come by six points or less, including last week's comeback against the Carolina Panthers, which saw them claw back from a 35-7 third-quarter hole only to lose, 38-35. Earlier this month, Giants co-owner Steve Tisch called this a "very frustrating" season, and his frustration has likely only mounted in the three weeks since he said that: New York is 1-2, including an overtime loss to the Jets that saw Coughlin mismanage the things in the fourth quarter , going for it on fourth down from the 4 rather than taking the field goal that would have put his team up by 13 points with 8:42 to play. Then came Sunday, when star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. acted recklessly, letting his emotions get the best of him as he blindsided cornerback Josh Norman with a helmet-to-helmet hit. Coughlin did not pull Beckham from the game, and after Beckham caught the game-tying touchdown, the Giants' defense didn't stop Cam Newton from marching his team into field goal territory, with kicker Graham Gano splitting the uprights from 43 yards out for the Carolina win. Coughlin has won two Super Bowls with the Giants, but he hasn't led the team to the postseason since winning the second, after the 2011 season. As he nears 70 years old and given what he's done for the franchise, the Giants could give Coughlin the opion of retiring so he leaves on a more graceful note. ON THE HOT SEAT Tom Coughlin, New York Giants The Giants have lost 13 players to injured reserve, but nearly every team has to deal with losses to key personnel every season. How they react and adapt is vital. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy: $10 could win you $25K in our $250K contest for Week 16 ]

NFL Power Rankings: This Jets season could end in heartbreak (Shutdown Corner)

Haven't the New York Jets fans suffered enough? The Jets are having a season that even the most optimistic fan probably didn't see coming. They're 9-5. Ryan Fitzpatrick is having a nice season. Todd Bowles is doing a heck of a job in his first season as Jets coach. That's awesome, right? Ah, but this is the Jets, one of the unluckiest franchises in the NFL. And Jets fans who have suffered through the years can probably see where this season is headed. The Jets could finish 11-5 and miss the playoffs. In fact, it looks like that's the most likely outcome even if the Jets finish 11-5. The Steelers face the Ravens and Browns to finish the season. A loss to either, even on the road, would be a massive upset. The Chiefs have home games against the Browns and Raiders. They'll be heavily favored in each. If the Steelers and Chiefs win out, and if you're betting you'd say they will, both of them would be in the playoffs because of tiebreakers. There is a scenario in which the Steelers, Chiefs, Jets win out and the Broncos lose once or twice and the Jets get in while the Broncos are out. That would be a heck of a story too. The Jets aren't guaranteed to win 11 games, or course. They face the Patriots this week and the Bills in the finale and obviously neither will be easy. But if the Jets win both and miss the playoffs, they'll join the 1985 Broncos and 2008 Patriots as the only 11-5 teams to miss the playoffs in NFL history. That would be rough.   PODCAST: Who are the NFL's greatest villains? Grandstanding: A Yahoo Sports podcast Subscribe via iTunes or via RSS feed We don't know how the season will end, and the range of possibilities still includes the Jets losing their final two or the Jets getting the help they need and getting in the playoffs. But winning 11 and missing out on the playoffs would be fitting for a Jets franchise that hasn't caught many breaks since the Joe Namath days. Here are Shutdown Corner's power rankings after Week 15: 32. Baltimore Ravens (4-10, LW: 32) Kamar Aiken wasn't expected to be a huge part of the Ravens' offense this season but has done well with Steve Smith and Breshad Perriman out. His eight-catch, 128-yard day Sunday puts him at 62 catches and 802 yards for the season. Nice job taking advantage of an opportunity. 31. San Francisco 49ers (4-10, LW: 31) A banner saying "HOLD JED ACCOUNTABLE" has flown over the last two 49ers home games, and fans didn't exactly fill the seats as anger toward owner Jed York grows. Make no mistake, as his team struggles in the first season after Jim Harbaugh, it is absolutely, positively inexcusable and cowardly for York to not speak publicly about his team (he has avoided the local media all season), which plays in a stadium that has been funded in part by tax money. York said last year fans should "hold me accountable" if the team isn't winning a Super Bowl. Well ... 30. Cleveland Browns (3-11, Last week: 30) Johnny Manziel watch: 19 of 32, 161 yards, one touchdown, one interception. Not great, but it was a tough assignment at Seattle. I don't think that performance will affect the ultimate decision on Manziel one way or another. The next two weeks will tell a big part of that story. 29. Tennessee Titans (3-11, LW: 29)

Mediocrity, the Miami Dolphins' hallmark in recent years, suddenly seems beyond their reach. The Dolphins are staggering to the finish line with another dismal December and are now assured of their first losing season since 2012. Lose both, and the Dolphins will have their worst record since 2007, when they went 1-15.

Chargers win for fans in possible final game in San Diego (The Associated Press)

Philip Rivers and the rest of the San Diego Chargers knew it would be emotional when they played what could be the final NFL game in San Diego. Not long after the Chargers beat the Miami Dolphins 30-14 in a matchup of last-place teams on Sunday, Rivers, Malcom Floyd, Eric Weddle and even coach Mike McCoy came back out to greet several thousand fans who don't want their team moving to Los Angeles.

Kansas City cornerback Marcus Peters picked off Baltimore quarterback Jimmy Clausen and rumbled 90 yards down the sideline for a late touchdown that added an exclamation point to the Chiefs' 34-14 victory over the reeling Ravens. The Chiefs became the first team in NFL history to rebound from a five-game losing streak with eight straight wins in the same season. San Diego fans applaud Chargers, possibly for final time (Shutdown Corner)

Sunday may well mark the last time the San Diego Chargers play before their home fans. If the team does indeed move to Los Angeles for the 2016 season, the Chargers fans sent them off with love and applause. Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates and Malcom Floyd received standing ovations as they left the field in the waning monents of the Chargers' 30-14 win over the Miami Dolphins. After the game, several players returned to the field to pay tribute to the fans: Philip Rivers has returned to the field to sign autographs and pay homage to fans. Joins Eric Weddle & Malcom Floyd. http://pic.twitter.com/Ff6ffFmasW — UTKevinAcee (@UTKevinAcee) December 21, 2015 Many questions remain about the Chargers' fate. Chairman Dean Spanos, whose family has owned the team since 1984, has sought to move the team to Los Angeles, to the extent of breaking off negotiations with San Diego officials this past summer. The Chargers and Raiders are working together to develop a stadium in Carson; meanwhile, Rams owner Stan Kroenke is developing a site in Inglewood. (St. Louis, which may also lose its NFL team, had a similar elegy for its Rams earlier this week .) Under the Spanos regime, the Chargers have had only 12 winning seasons and have missed the playoffs five of the past six years, including 2015. Wild play as Philip Rivers slings INT, recovers ensuing fumble (Shutdown Corner)

Sometimes genius arises from insanity. Sometimes the universe aligns itself in your favor. Sometimes a dumb move turns out all right after all. Early in the second quarter of their game against the Miami Dolphins, the San Diego Chargers and Philip Rivers were set up near midfield. Rivers decided to go big, airing out a pass into double-double coverage (four Dolphins, two Chargers). Safety Reshad Jones pulled down the ball, but the insanity was only just beginning: **CRAZY PLAY ALERT** Best way to make up for throwing an INT? By recovering the fumble on your INT. Huh? #MIAvsSD https://t.co/Gpw7EtZrHR — NFL (@NFL) December 20, 2015 Jones took off upfield, but soon after lost the ball. Who ended up with it? Why, Rivers himself, of course. The ball traveled 100 yards or so in the air and then back on the ground, but the net gain was minus-three yards. It might have been the most bizarre play of the season, but when you're talking about a game with absolutely zero importance in the grander scheme of things, we all take what we can get. ____ Jay Busbee is a writer for Yahoo Sports and the author of EARNHARDT NATION . Playoff berths, edges at stake for Panthers and more (AFP)

Undefeated Carolina will try to become only the fourth NFL team to start 14-0 by defeating the New York Giants on Sunday while rivals try to clinch playoff berths. The Panthers can secure a home-field edge throughout the National Conference (NFC) playoffs with a victory and an Arizona loss at Philadelphia, although the Cardinals are one of the NFL's hottest teams with seven wins in a row. Eight prior teams have reached 13-0 but only three reached 14-0, including the unbeaten 1972 Super Bowl champion Miami Dolphins, the 2009 Indianapolis Colts and 2007 New England Patriots, who were unbeaten before losing to the Giants in the Super Bowl.

Week 15 Coaches on the hot seat (Shutdown Corner)

If his Monday press conference is any indication, Chuck Pagano knows he's in his final days with the Indianapolis Colts, whether that end comes on Jan. 3, the team's final regular-season game, or later in the month if the Colts make the playoffs. Asked about his future in Indianapolis, Pagano said, " They can fire you , but they can't eat you." After 35-point losses in consecutive weeks, it would seem that Pagano's days with the Colts are numbered. Could that change if they make another deep playoff run? Possible, but owner Jim Irsay would likely have to pony up to keep Pagano, who turned down a one-year extension in the offseason. Given the stories that have come out of Indianapolis, the relationship between Pagano and general manager Ryan Grigson isn't great, so Grigson's status with the franchise could play a role as well. As they enter this week's game with the Houston Texans, the Colts are leading the AFC South. But a loss to Houston, which has never beated the Colts in Indianapolis, and that would change; if the Texans win, they would take the lead by virtue of a better divisional record. Though Andrew Luck has returned to practice, he will not play on Sunday , so Matt Hasselbeck will once again start. But the Texans will also be playing T.J. Yates after Brian Hoyer suffered a concussion last Sunday. ON THE HOT SEAT Chuck Pagano, Indianapolis We've said it before: if we were in charge in Indy, Grigson would be the one to go. But if the brief John Idzik/Rex Ryan era for the New York Jets taught us anything, it's that hiring a new GM and having him keep a holdover coach doesn't always work out. Mike McCoy, San Diego The Chargers held the Kansas City Chiefs to just 10 points last Sunday, but for the third time in their last four games, the Chargers only scored three points. Dan Campbell, Miami The bounce the Dolphins got from Campbell's promotion lasted two games, and they've been up-and-down since. On paper, they have strong players in all three phases of the game, but once again they will very likely be on the outside looking in come the postseason, and in the market for a head coach. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy: $10 could win you $30K in our $300K contest for Week 15 ] HEATING UP AGAIN Jim Caldwell, Detroit The Lions seemed to be getting on track after their bye week, winning three straight games, including their first win in Green Bay in over 20 years, but have lost two straight. Losing the rematch to the Packers was understandable, but last Sunday they lost to the Rams. SEAT'S STILL WARM Jeff Fisher, St. Louis The Rams won in Detroit to break a five-game losing streak, but at 5-8 they're three games back of the NFC wildcard teams, and play against the surging Seahawks in Seattle in Week 16. Jim Tomsula, San Francisco Before the 49ers came to town last week, the Cleveland Browns hadn't won a game since October. As he's done on other occasions this season, Tomsula said the Niners had a good week of practice; in the game against Cleveland, however, there was "an execution problem," particualrly as quarterback Blaine Gabbert was sacked nine times.

Seven teams most likely to earn top pick in 2016 NFL draft (Shutdown Corner)

While the NFL playoff race is heating up, there's another race that's really starting to boil down: that of the league's basement. Seven teams currently have three or four victories, and though it's mathematically possible for one of the five 5-8 teams to earn the first overall pick of the 2016 NFL draft, it's most likely that one of the bottom seven will end up picking first. Here are the seven teams in their current order (the first tiebreaker after overall record is opponents' win percentage — the lower it is, the higher the team's pick will be): Current draft pick Team Record Opponent win % Remaining opponent win % 1 Tennessee Titans 3-10 0.495 0.590 2 San Diego Chargers 3-10 0.524 0.538 3 Cleveland Browns 3-10 0.529 0.615 4 Baltimore Ravens 4-9 0.514 0.667 5 Detroit Lions 4-9 0.529 0.359 6 San Francisco 49ers 4-9 0.534 0.487 7 Dallas Cowboys 4-9 0.543 0.513 The Titans are the odds-on favorites to earn the top pick, it would appear, based on their significantly lower opponent win percentage combined with a tough remaining schedule (although, math alert: that actually could work against them if they don't win out, as illogical as that might read). The Ravens are one of four NFL teams never to have earned the top pick, but their chances are decent if they lose out and the Titans, Chargers and Browns all win at least one more game this season. It's going to be tough for, say, the Cowboys to earn the first pick given their tiebreaker disadvantage. What's notable here is that the Browns were sitting in the top slot prior to Sunday's victory over the San Francisco 49ers, and because they have a tough slate remaining they would appear to be stuck in a spot outside of the top pick unless the Titans or Chargers (who almost won Sunday) start putting up some W's. The Browns, so they say, can't win for losing, it would appear. So is winning the first overall pick a huge coup? Perhaps not, as there does not appear to be a clear-cut superstar for this upcoming draft. Joey Bosa? Laremy Tunsil? A quarterback? Who knows? But landing the first pick allows a team to get whichever player it favors the most, and with the league's amended salary considerations it no longer is a financial burden to do so. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. NFL Power Rankings: Another Seahawks NFC title seems possible (Shutdown Corner)

But here we are, with three regular-season games to go, and the Seahawks might be making a run. it took a while, and who knows, after two straight Super Bowl appearances maybe it was just tough to get the juices completely flowing for early-season games. Especially after losing a truly heartbreaking Super Bowl to the Patriots last February. And there were personnel issues. Kam Chancellor's holdout hurt the defense early on, and the offensive line struggled. Marshawn Lynch never really looked like himself. Russell Wilson, with a big new contract and more responsibility in the offense, didn't play well in the first half of the season. There was no reason after nine weeks to believe they'd have a shot at another Super Bowl appearance. Then everything flipped. PODCAST: Who can stop the Panthers and Patriots?: Grandstanding: A Yahoo Sports podcast Subscribe via iTunes or via RSS feed Wilson has played out of his mind, with 16 touchdown passes and no interceptions the last four weeks. The defense, after the Steelers performance, has been magnificent. And, of course, the Steelers are hard for anyone to slow down. Everything is clicking the past couple weeks, although rookie running back Thomas Rawls' season-ending ankle injury could be a big problem. They're probably depending on a Lynch return from sports hernia surgery a little more than they'd like. Nobody knows when or if Lynch will be back or how effective he'll be if he does return. But they'll see if they can patch it together without him. The Seahawks have home games against the Browns and Rams the next two weeks, so pencil them into the playoffs. There's a good chance they'll be the fifth seed too, which means they'll be significant favorites at the NFC East champ in the first round. They didn't look like they could beat the Cardinals a few weeks ago, when the teams met in Seattle. But this seems like a different team now. A rematch would be much more interesting, as would a rematch against the Panthers, who pulled off a last-minute win at Seattle early this season. Would you feel that comfortable picking the Panthers or Cardinals if they played the Seahawks? It's not easy for any team to win three straight road playoff games, but we've seen teams get hot late and make a run. Most of those teams didn't have the star power the Seahawks have, either. It seems like Seattle is back. The road will be tougher this time, but you can't count them out of a third straight Super Bowl appearance quite yet. Here are Shutdown Corner's power rankings after Week 14: 32. Baltimore Ravens (4-9, LW: 31) You know it's getting bad when you're thinking, "I really hope Matt Schaub comes back soon." 31. San Francisco 49ers (4-9, LW: 30) That whole "Maybe Blaine Gabbert can be the 2016 starter" movement hit a bit of a snag on Sunday, didn't it? 30. Cleveland Browns (3-10, Last week: 32)

Chiefs' Dee Ford proves he is no first-round draft bust (The Associated Press)

Chiefs general manager John Dorsey likes to say that it takes two years minimum, and often three or more, to determine whether a draft choice was a success or failure. After a rookie season in which he barely got onto the field, the young pass rusher finally showed Sunday why Dorsey made him a first-round pick. In place of injured All-Pro Justin Houston, Ford racked up three sacks of Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, then blanketed running back Danny Woodhead on the final play of the game to force an incompletion and preserve a 10-3 victory.

Raiders luck out when McManus misses field goal (The Associated Press)

Jack Del Rio's decision to go for 2 was more of a no-brainer than a head-scratcher. It initially looked like one of the strangest coaching decisions of the year when the Raiders went for 2 following a touchdown that put them ahead by three against the Broncos in the fourth quarter Sunday. Long snapper Jon Condo had injured his right shoulder while recovering a fumbled punt moments earlier in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 15-12 victory.

Saints' Brees continues to climb career passing ladder (The Associated Press)

Drew Brees passed another Hall of Famer on the career touchdown pass list, helping the New Orleans Saints damage the playoffs hopes of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brees teamed with Marques Colston on a pair of TDs - moving ahead of Dan Marino for fourth all-time with 421 - and the Saints beat the Bucs 24-17 to snap a four-game losing streak on Sunday. The 36-year-old quarterback also tied Peyton Manning for the most 300-yard games (93) in NFL history and took over sole possession of third place on the career list for December TD passes with 112.

Chiefs finally hang on in final minute to win at Arrowhead (The Associated Press)

Twice before this season the Kansas City Chiefs had been forced to defend their end zone in the closing minutes, and both times the defense had buckled in defeat. After allowing Philip Rivers to march the San Diego Chargers downfield in the fourth quarter Sunday, the Chiefs forced him to throw incompletions in the end zone on the final two plays of the game, preserving a 10-3 victory and their seventh consecutive win. Suddenly, a defense that was supposed to be among the best in the NFL is living up to expectations, racking up sacks and forcing critical turnovers.

Mack, Carr lead Raiders over Broncos 15-12 (The Associated Press)

Khalil Mack couldn't be stopped. Mack had five sacks of Brock Osweiler, including one in the end zone for a safety, and Derek Carr bounced back from an awful first half to lead the Oakland Raiders past the Denver Broncos 15-12 Sunday. Carr threw two touchdown passes and the Raiders (6-7) beat the Broncos for the first time since Sept. 12, 2011, despite being held to minus-12 yards in the first half - the worst performance by a team heading into halftime in nearly a quarter-century.
