The Green Bay Packers’ defense has gone mostly unnoticed because the offense is so explosive. But the defense has played really well this year too. I give defensive coordinator Dom Capers a lot of credit for the job he has done so far this season. The Packers have been creative, not only with their coverages but also in offering different looks up front. It’s possible there’s no defense in the NFL as multiple with their looks and their utilization of personnel up front, and in their hybrid coverages, as the Packers. The Packers took advantage of an overmatched Rams offensive line, and also threw a lot of different coverages at Foles. Here’s an example of a hybrid coverage that led to an interception. On third-and-9, the Packers came out in a dime defense. They played a zone concept to the three-receiver side, and a man-to-man concept to the single-receiver side. Then when defensive tackle Datone Jones got pressure (and pressure has been a consistent positive for the Packers defense all year), Foles had an undefined throw. Tight end Jared Cook stopped when he read the zone concept. Foles threw it as if the Packers were playing man, and Cook’s defender was taking him across he field. Cornerback Quinten Rollins had an interception and he returned it 45 yards for the score. Give a lot of credit to the hybrid coverage for causing that mistake.
