Packers' young defense readies for Broncos QB Manning (The Associated Press)
Ready for the challenge of facing the NFL's only five-time MVP, a stingy Green Bay Packers defense is looking to get some face time with Peyton Manning. The Sunday night showdown in Denver between two of the league's five unbeaten teams will be the first meaningful game for all but one of the Packers' defensive players against the Broncos' legendary quarterback. ''A lot of young guys in here,'' linebacker Julius Peppers said in the Green Bay locker room Friday.

Greg Cosell's Look Ahead: Kuechly, Davis and the Panthers' top defense (Shutdown Corner)
We've known for years that Carolina Panthers inside linebacker Luke Kuechly is a big-time difference maker (as is fellow linebacker Thomas Davis), and one play against the Philadelphia Eagles summed up how hard he can make things for an opposing offense. The Philadelphia Eagles tried an outside sweep with Ryan Mathews in the first quarter. Kuechly showed off his excellent play recognition at the snap. Kuechly moved at the same time as Eagles center Jason Kelce started to pull. Then Kuechly maintained his balance and control as he was pushed from behind by another Eagles lineman. Kuechly stayed up, beat the block by Kelce and made the tackle. It's an outstanding play.

Rodney Hudson investment paying off well for Raiders (The Associated Press)
Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie has taken his fair share of criticism for some of the free agent moves he's made over the past few years. One signing that no one disputes was the $44.5 million, five-year contract given to center Rodney Hudson in March. With an average salary of $8.9 million, Hudson is the second highest-paid center in the NFL behind Miami's Mike Pouncey, who earns $8.95 million annually.

Consultant: Chargers stadium point man has misled city (The Associated Press)
The top political consultant for Mayor Kevin Faulconer says if the Chargers resume negotiations for a new stadium, it needs to be without lawyer Mark Fabiani because he has no credibility with elected officials. Fabiani, who represents team chairman Dean Spanos, didn't respond to a request for comment Thursday.

NFL draft: Early look at team needs shows big demand for QBs, O-linemen (Shutdown Corner)
Perhaps even more so than the 2016 NFL prospects themselves, the 32 NFL teams' needs right now are very much up in the air. There are a number of extenuating factors: Will there be a coaching or front-office change? Which players will come or go in free agency? Will there be injuries to change the situation entering the draft? [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football: First place wins $100K in our $600K contest for Week 8 ] Still, we have an idea of which pressing needs could be addressed by teams at some point in this coming offseason — via trades, free agency or, yes, the draft — regardless of any other changes. One common theme has emerged: Quarterbacks and offensive linemen will be in high demand, even if the draft supply won't match that need. That could help push up, say, Michigan State's Connor Cook into a top-10 pick and force a run on offensive linemen in Round 1 that perhaps belies the talent at both positions. Here's our team-by-team look at how the needs stand, in order, with perhaps a bit more of a lean toward potential position targets in the draft. Team Need 1 Need 2 Need 3 Skinny Detroit Lions OL CB DL Both lines of scrimmage and secondary could use some new blood. Baltimore Ravens DB pass rusher WR Which is in worse shape: the pass rush or the coverage? Both bad. Tennessee Titans OL S LB Could also be in the mix for a running back, depending on David Cobb's play. Cleveland Browns QB WR DE We'll assume that they overlook a receiver, but finding a QB is crucial. Houston Texans QB RB S Would be stunning to see them pass another QB in Round 1 again. Jacksonville Jaguars OL CB LB Almost certainly will help Blake Bortles with better blocking talent early. San Francisco 49ers OL QB WR All of this, of course, depends on what they do with Colin Kaepernick. San Diego Chargers OL pass rusher S The third need is assuming that Eric Weddle walks in free agency. Kansas City Chiefs OL DL WR You could add QB to the list, but we think they'll fortify up front first. Tampa Bay Buccaneers OL pass rusher WR Jameis Winston needs more help, and he's almost sure to receive some. Chicago Bears OL QB CB Defense actually needs lots of help, but hard to pass up on right QB. Dallas Cowboys RB DT QB Loss of DeMarco Murray, injury to Tony Romo exposed major depth issues. Buffalo Bills LB S OL This defense should be better; the O-line needs a little fine-tuning. Washington Redskins QB S OL Look for Scot McCloughan to continue building a tougher, stronger roster. New Orleans Saints CB WR pass rusher Don't overlook wide receiver as a top target position in the spring. Seattle Seahawks OL DT CB Russell Okung might be cut, making this a major concern for Russel Wilson's health. Philadelphia Eagles OL QB pass rusher Top two needs happen to be two spots Chip Kelly might ignore again. Miami Dolphins OL DL CB Both lines could use a little more youth, but need bigger on offense. Oakland Raiders CB S LB Will be big players in free agency, so needs could change dramatically. St. Louis Rams WR OL DE More likely they'd look for a receiver than OL help in draft. Pittsburgh Steelers CB TE QB Missed on 2015 help with two cornerback draft picks. Minnesota Vikings OL LB WR Depth up front was slaughtered early in the season by injuries. New York Jets pass rusher TE OL More pass-rush help would make a great defense even better. Atlanta Falcons LB DL TE Still need more front-seven snarl to build Dan Quinn-style defense. Indianapolis Colts OL DL pass rusher Simply put, this team is not nearly good enough in the trenches. New York Giants pass rusher S CB Defense needs a facelift to help slow down quality passing games. Arizona Cardinals pass rusher LB OL More fine tuning, but this startling lineup just could use a few small upgrades. Denver Broncos OL QB RB Offensive makeover will continue with or without Peyton in Gary Kubiak's eye. Cincinnati Bengals LB OL WR Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu both in contract seasons, which makes it a need. Green Bay Packers pass rusher DL OL Ted Thompson takes the best player, and it has borne good results overall. Carolina Panthers CB OL S Age in secondary, Josh Norman's free-agent status are concerning. New England Panthers CB LB RB Corner appears by far the biggest need, but they're without a first-rounder. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Chargers-Ravens Preview (The Associated Press)
The San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Ravens are each on the verge of a fourth straight loss, which would go a long way in sinking either's hopes for a playoff spot. Both are relying heavily on their quarterbacks because of abysmal defenses, making Sunday's meeting in Baltimore a potential shootout. Philip Rivers and Joe Flacco, along with the New York Giants' Eli Manning, are the league's only signal-callers to start each game for their current team since the beginning of 2008.

The lawyer who is leading the San Diego Chargers' efforts to move to Los Angeles was vigorously booed as he addressed the crowd at the beginning of a public hearing the NFL mandated as part of the relocation process. St. Louis gets a chance to make pitch to keep the Rams (The Associated Press)
Sellouts are rare for the St. Louis Rams, but a public hearing on the team's effort to relocate is drawing a capacity crowd. The NFL is hosting similar forums this week in the other two cities that could potentially lose their teams as early as next season - Wednesday in San Diego and Thursday in Oakland. The Rams are at the bottom of the league in home attendance, drawing on average fewer than 52,000 fans to the 66,000-seat Edward Jones Dome.

NFL Power Rankings: Too many division races are already over (Shutdown Corner)
Giving each division champion a playoff spot and a postseason home game is supposed to increase excitement. This year? It's not even Halloween and we can safely call at least five of the eight division champions. The Bengals and Broncos have three-game leads. The Patriots and Packers have two-game leads. Can you see any of those teams blowing the division? I can't either. The Colts aren't very good, but who in the heck else is going to win the AFC South? We all know they're going to eventually win it. So that's five divisions that seem locked up before October is done. Among the other three, the NFC East might be interesting in a 2014 NFC South way, where a bunch of mediocre teams have a tight race. The NFC West could get interesting at some point, if the Rams are simply a different team with a rookie star in Todd Gurley (possible) or the Seahawks awaken from their slumber to challenge the Cardinals. The NFC South is the one interesting division this season, surprisingly enough after they didn't have one winning team last year. That division looks like a really good race between the Panthers and Falcons. But that's it? It's too early to have this little intrigue. Of course it's the unpredictable NFL, so the wheels could fall off one of those teams that currently looks in control of the division. There's a long way to go. But it seems like way too many teams are either bad, or already worried about if they can get a bye because the division title is a foregone conclusion. The top-heavy NFL, with five teams still undefeated after seven weeks, is making for a strange season in many ways. The lack of intrigue in most of the divisions in the NFL is one of them. Here are Shutdown Corner's power rankings after Week 7: 32. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-4, Last week: 31) The Buccaneers blew a 24-0 lead to Washington on Sunday, which makes Lovie Smith 4-18 with Tampa Bay. Even if you take into account that the Buccaneers tanked at the end of last year to get the top pick , have you seen anything the last two seasons that makes you think Smith is a good fit? 31. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-5, LW: 32) I know the word out of Jacksonville is that everyone is going to be patient with Gus Bradley. And that's justifiable. But I wonder if that timetable would have gotten shorter had the Jaguars blown that 27-3 lead to the Bills in London and lost on Sunday. 30. Detroit Lions (1-6, LW: 26)

Raiders use all-around performance in latest win (The Associated Press)
From strong coverage on the opening kick to an interception by Malcolm Smith on the third play from scrimmage to a touchdown run by Latavius Murray two plays later, the Oakland Raiders used a team effort to jump all over the San Diego Chargers. The Raiders (3-3) kept up that play for the first three quarters and rolled to their most complete victory of the season, beating San Diego 37-29 for their second road win of the year. Now the team that lost more games than anyone else the previous 12 seasons is suddenly relevant in the AFC, showing significant progress in coach Jack Del Rio's first year at the helm.

McCoy: Chargers outplayed, outcoached in loss to Raiders (The Associated Press)
The game film pretty much summed up what everyone saw Sunday afternoon when the San Diego Chargers were embarrassed by the Oakland Raiders. ''Yesterday's game was unacceptable, especially the first half,'' coach Mike McCoy said Monday, a day after the Raiders scored on their first seven possessions and had a 31-point lead before winning 37-29. ''We got outplayed and outcoached in the first half,'' McCoy said.

Unbeaten Packers return from bye healthier (The Associated Press)
T.J. Lang's knee feels good, and the veteran right guard feels even better about his Green Bay Packers coming off a much-needed, get-healthy bye week and heading into Sunday night's showdown with the Denver Broncos. Lang was one of many Packers who welcomed the bye, although he did not miss the team's Oct. 18 victory over San Diego like many of his injured teammates did. When the team returned to work Monday for a practice in pads, wide receiver Davante Adams (ankle), nose tackle B.J. Raji (groin), safety Morgan Burnett (calf) and outside linebacker Nick Perry (shoulder/hand) were all back on the field after not playing against the Chargers.

Carr throws 3 TD passes, Raiders embarrass Chargers 37-29 (The Associated Press)
Amari Cooper caught the screen pass from Derek Carr, stumbled a little and then went racing through traffic to complete the 52-yard touchdown play. It wasn't quite halftime yet and the Oakland Raiders were embarrassing the San Diego Chargers 30-3. ''It was just a perfect play,'' Cooper, the Raiders' first-round draft pick out of Alabama, said after the Raiders beat their possible future stadium mates, 37-29 Sunday.

ICYMI in NFL's Week 7: Hardy makes Dez seem level-headed (The Associated Press)
Greg Hardy managed to make Dallas Cowboys teammate Dez Bryant seem like the level-headed, peacemaker type. In an unusual, on-field, in-game lashing out, Hardy broke into a Cowboys special teams huddle after the unit allowed a 100-yard touchdown return in the fourth quarter of a 27-20 loss to the NFC East rival New York Giants. Hardy shoved at least one Dallas player.

NFL Winners and Losers: Andrew Luck not looking too great lately (Shutdown Corner)
There have been a couple speed bumps this season for Andrew Luck on his way to Canton. The legend of Luck grew and grew in his first three seasons. He played very well, enough that we overlooked a lot of his faults, like a penchant for a few too many turnovers. Maybe it was that there are so few great young quarterbacks, we wanted someone to be that future Hall of Famer. And if you watched Luck close enough though, you knew he was legit, seemingly the best prospect in however many years who lived up to the hype. Luck was basically LeBron James in the NFL, the rare once-in-a-lifetime prospect who actually played to that level. But it’s also rare to have an immaculate career, and Luck is gong through either a horrible slump or is having some of his flaws finally called out in his fourth season, depending on how you view Luck. Luck is having a bad season and not surprisingly, the Colts are going with him. Luck’s final numbers Sunday against the New Orleans Saints — 23-of-44 for 333 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions — look a lot better than he played. Luck did almost nothing until the Colts were trailing 27-0. He had 100 yards on his first 25 attempts, an unfathomable 4 yards per attempt against a bad New Orleans Saints defense. He threw a rookie-type interception very late in the first half with the Colts in field-goal position when he never saw cornerback Kyle Wilson dropping in a zone coverage. Luck came into the game with a sickly 75 rating and bumped it up just a bit with an 81 rating on Sunday, thanks in large part to T.Y. Hilton getting free for an 87-yard touchdown. Luck’s rating in the first half, as the Saints took a 27-point lead, was 19.3. A big second half means little when your team is in such a big hole by halftime.

Houston's Arian Foster sidelined by Achilles tendon injury (The Associated Press)
Arian Foster went down in a heap without taking a hit. Foster injured his right Achilles tendon late in the fourth quarter of Houston's 44-26 loss at Miami on Sunday. Texans coach Bill O'Brien said he didn't know the severity of the injury, but added ''it obviously didn't look good.'' If Foster tore his Achilles, his season is over.

Carr throws 3 TD passes, Raiders embarrass Chargers 37-29 (The Associated Press)
Derek Carr threw three touchdown passes, including a 52-yarder to Amari Cooper, and the Oakland Raiders turned two interceptions of Philip Rivers into 10 points on their way to an easy 37-29 victory over the Chargers on Sunday in what could be the last game of the AFC West rivalry played in San Diego. It was the first meeting of the Raiders (3-3) and Chargers (2-5) since their owners announced plans to build a $1.7 billion stadium in an industrial Los Angeles suburb if they can't get new stadiums in their home markets. Cooper, the first-round draft pick out of Alabama, caught a short pass from Carr on an inside screen and raced through the defense to give Oakland a 30-3 lead just before halftime.

With one hyped matchup finished, the New England Patriots turn their attention to another - one in which they have also held an overwhelming recent advantage. Coming off a satisfying win over a rival they have dominated, the Patriots host the surprising New York Jets on Sunday with first place in the AFC East on the line. NFL, Cameron Heyward reach agreement over the Steeler's eye black tribute (Shutdown Corner)
The NFL has successfully avoided looking like a blockhead again by reaching an agreement with Cameron Heyward over the Steelers defensive end's tribute to his late father, Craig "Ironhead" Heyward. The league came to an agreement with Heyward that will lessen fines levied against the 26-year-old for wearing eye black featuring the words "IRON" and "HEAD" in white, according to ESPN.com . He was fined $5,787 for wearing the eye black agains the Chargers in Week 5, and then did it again against the Cardinals Sunday — a second violation of the NFL's uniform policy that normally carries a $11,576 fine. [ Play Yahoo Daily Fantasy and get a 100% deposit bonus with your first deposit ] In a statement on Twitter, Heyward said he will instead honor his father, who died from cancer in 2006, twofold: 1) by wearing eye black without the inscription, and 2) by partnering with EyeBlack.com to sell strips with "IRON" and "HEAD" inscribed on them for $3.99 or offering customizable eye black strips with the promotion code "IRONHEAD" to benefit cancer research through his The Heward House foundation. Here's an update on my EyeBlack http://pic.twitter.com/miFUzcO8Cj — Cam Heyward (@CamHeyward) October 21, 2015 "I consider myself a team player and someone who puts others before myself, and I don't want to be a distraction to my teammates or the Steelers organization," he wrote. "With that, I will not be writing on my eye black going forward anymore. I will be honoring my father in other ways on and off the field." Fifty percent of the aforementioned customized eye black sales will be donated to the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation through his charity, per Heyward's statement. The NFL also came under fire for preventing Hewyard's Steelers teammate, DeAngelo Williams, from wearing pink to pay homage to his late mother beyond the league's designated breast cancer awareness campaign in October, so Williams opted to pay for 53 mammograms instead. According to ESPN.com, Heyward's representatives cited the league's decision not to fine Devon Still for writing "LEAH" and "STRONG" under his eyes on the Bengals last season during a conference call discussing the matter. Of all people, Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall may have had the most rational take on the issue while making an appearance on Showtime's "Inside the NFL." New York Newsday has the transcription : "Look at Devon Still's story," Marshall said. "It seems like Devon was able to raise a lot of money off of it. The NFL was able to capitalize off of it because there were a lot of eyeballs on our game, which is good. This isn't as big of a story. Now, we are telling this guy [Heyward] you can't do it anymore, we are fining you. And that's a lot of gray. Let's come up with the right plan, the right system to allow guys to do what they need to do or what they feel is right and is not taking away from the game. "The NFL will have to do a better job of not picking and choosing." It appears they have, for now. - - - - - - - Ben Rohrbach is a contributor for Ball Don't Lie and Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. NFL Power Rankings: The lurking contender outside the undefeated teams (Shutdown Corner)
It's not easy to win with your backup quarterback in the NFL. It's really hard when your backup quarterback is borderline incompetent. But it can be done if other units pick up the slack. And that's why the Pittsburgh Steelers look like a more serious contender now than they even did before Ben Roethlisberger's injury. The Steelers have survived without Roethlisberger, who could return this week from a knee injury. Even if he misses another game, it seems like his return is close, barring a setback. The Steelers defense has played better than anyone anticipated. The defense deserves full credit for winning the game at St. Louis in which Roethlisberger got hurt, when it gave up just six points. Since then the defense has had three solid performances in a row despite an offense that rarely moved the ball with Michael Vick at quarterback. They gave up 13 points on Sunday to a good Cardinals offense. The defense's performance on Sunday bought time until Vick got hurt and the Steelers had to go with Landry Jones, who in his first NFL appearance figured out how to get the ball in the hands of the Steelers' many playmakers. [ Play Yahoo Daily Fantasy and get a 100% deposit bonus with your first deposit ] The Steelers won at the Rams, blew a weird game against the Ravens they should have won, then won at San Diego and beat Arizona. That's a really positive stretch considering Roethlisberger was out. Now the Steelers are 4-2, with their only other loss in an impossible spot at New England on opening night. Once Roethlisberger returns, the offense is going to explode, and now the defense has some confidence that it can play well too. What the Steelers as a whole did with Vick mostly flailing around was impressive. it put them in position to make a nice run once their quarterback returned. Look around the NFL. There aren't many impressive teams other than the five remaining undefeated teams. The Atlanta Falcons have the best resume so far, but I'd prefer the Steelers with Roethlisberger, and he'll be back soon. The Jets have been very good, but ultimately I still don't trust them to win big with Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback. Who else really stands out? A Cardinals team whose best win is against the Bears and who just lost to Landry Jones? With teams like the Colts, Seahawks, Ravens and Chiefs having disappointing starts, there aren't too many trustworthy teams out there, aside from the five undefeated teams. But I do like the Steelers. We all know what they can be with Roethlisberger back. Don't be too surprised when Pittsburgh makes a big second-half surge. This stretch without their quarterback has said a lot about the Steelers. Here are Shutdown Corner's power rankings after Week 6: 32. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-5, Last week: 32) Gus Bradley needs some wins to save his job. He's 8-30. The Jaguars are done this season already. I don't know that a loss at London would cause a firing, but you have to believe that the final 10 games are an audition for 2016. If he makes it 10 more games. 31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-3, LW: 27) After playing at Washington, check out this stretch for Tampa: at Atlanta, vs. Giants, vs. Dallas, at Philadelphia, at Indianapolis, vs. Atlanta. There might not be many wins before December for the Bucs. 30. Kansas City Chiefs (1-5, LW: 23) The season is lost, so the rest of the games should be spent opening things up a bit. Get a modern-day NFL passing offense going into next season. 29. Baltimore Ravens (1-5, LW: 22) Going back to last season with the Bears, Ravens offensive coordinator Marc Trestman is 1-10 in his last 11 games. 28. San Francisco 49ers (2-4, LW: 30) I don't know if it was Colin Kaepernick breaking a slump or the Ravens being awful, but Kaepernick had a nice game on Sunday. He gets Seattle next, which isn't as intimidating as it has been in years past. Another positive game could get him going in a nice direction.

Bye week offers breather for Lacy, other sore Packers (The Associated Press)
A lack of carries for Eddie Lacy with the Green Bay Packers isn't necessarily solely tied to how the running back feels after he sprained his right ankle earlier this season. Yes, Lacy is playing hurt, coach Mike McCarthy said Monday, but most of rest of the team is, too. The upcoming bye week offers a much-needed break for Lacy and other sore Packers.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger plans to practice in full this week (Shutdown Corner)
Landry Jones' first NFL start might have to wait. After beginning his third season in Pittsburgh as the Steelers' third-string quarterback behind Ben Roethlisberger and Michael Vick, Jones suddenly found himself in the QB1 position in the second half of Sunday's game against the Cardinals, as Roethlisberger remained sidelined with a knee injury and Vick was suffering from a combination of a dirt in his eye, a hamstring tweak and just plain poor performance . After completing eight of his 12 passes — the first dozen throws of his NFL career — for 168 yards and a pair of touchdowns in an impressive 25-13 win against the Arizona Cardinals, Jones grabbed the starting QB reins in Roethlisberger's absence. Except, Big Ben might be closer to a return than initially thought . According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ron Cook , Roethlisberger will practice in full this week and hasn't ruled out a return from his MCL sprain and bone bruise against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. “We’re going to tape it and brace it and I’m going to see what I can do,” Roethlisberger said after the Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals, 25-13, Sunday at Heinz Field. “My plan is to go out Wednesday and practice. We’ll see what happens. I know I’ve got to be smart about it. I’ve got to be able to defend myself. We’re just going to take it day by day.” Sunday marks the first pane of a window that originally had Roethlisberger missing 4-6 weeks. He suffered the knee injury in the third quarter of a Week 3 win over the St. Louis Rams, and reports prior to Sunday's game against the Cardinals figured Roethlisberger to be " a long shot " against the Chiefs. Which still might be the case. The Steelers have done well to tread water without their two-time Super Bowl champion QB at the helm, defeating the Chargers in San Diego and the Cardinals at home in a span of six days to improve to 4-2. And Landry's effort might give the Steelers enough confidence to hold Roethlisberger out another week and hope he's healthier for a showdown with the division-leading Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8. - - - - - - - Ben Rohrbach is a contributor for Ball Don't Lie and Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Packers hold off pass-happy Chargers for 27-20 win (The Associated Press)
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers paced nervously on the sideline with a towel draped around his neck before San Diego ran its final play. Chargers counterpart Philip Rivers had been so good all night long. Green Bay's defense needed one last stop on fourth-and-goal at the 3 with 15 seconds left.

Patriots down Colts in 'Deflategate' rematch (AFP)
Tom Brady and the New England Patriots powered past the Indianapolis Colts 34-27 to improve their perfect 2015 record in a "Deflategate" grudge match. Superstar quarterback Brady, stung by charges he played a role in New England's use of under-inflated footballs in their AFC championship win over Indianapolis in January, insisted all week that the clash was not about revenge. Trailing 21-20 at halftime, Brady piloted a seven-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to open the third quarter, capping it with a 25-yard scoring pass to tight end Rob Gronkowski.

NFL Winners and Losers: Cam Newton is a legitimate MVP candidate (Shutdown Corner)
If you ask a knowledgeable NFL fan who has the worst set of receivers in the NFL, it won't take long for them to list the Carolina Panthers. Many might list the Panthers first. The Panthers' offensive line wasn't considered before the season to be anywhere in the top half of the league, though it has played pretty well. Running back Jonathan Stewart has been below 4 yards per carry this season and hasn't scored a touchdown. So at some point, when all these deficiencies are added up, doesn't it make sense that Cam Newton is on a very short list of legitimate MVP candidates right now? Nobody has done more with less, at least. The other quarterbacks in the discussion — Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and yes, Andy Dalton — have more help. But here the Panthers are, at 5-0 after doing what so few teams have done in the Russell Wilson era, and that's win at the Seattle Seahawks. Newton led an eight-play, 80-yard drive in the final three minutes to beat the Seahawks 27-23. In the final minute Newton hit tight end Greg Olsen for a 26-yard touchdown pass when there was a miscommunication between safety Earl Thomas and cornerback Richard Sherman, who gestured to each other in frustration after Olsen scored. Newton completed all six of his passes that drive with the game on the line (let's not count an incompletion on a spike to stop the clock). On the possession before that, Newton took the Panthers 80 yards for a score and went 5-of-6 on the drive. That's how the Panthers turned a 23-14 fourth-quarter deficit into a win. That win legitimizes the Panthers. Carolina had played a soft schedule to start 4-0, so it was tough to tell how good they really were. The four quarterbacks Carolina faced to start the season were Blake Bortles, Ryan Mallett, Luke McCown and Jameis Winston. if you had to pick one of the unbeaten teams that had proven the least in its hot start, it was the Panthers. That's not the case anymore. It's clear that this isn't the same Seahawks team, because something is seriously off there, but it's still a quality win for the Panthers. You can see how far they have come since a playoff loss at Seattle last season. And it makes you look at what else the Panthers have done this season in a new light. They're 5-0, with a heck of a road win on the resume now. And they have a quarterback who, even though many have trouble warming up to him, has rebounded very nicely after a down and injury-filled 2014. The Panthers don't have an offensive lineup around Newton that scares anyone, but somehow Newton always seems to find a way to be productive. He might even be putting together the best season of his career. You can also argue he's having the best season of anyone in the NFL so far this season. Here are the rest of the winners and losers from Week 6 in the NFL: WINNERS Gary Barnidge: The Cleveland Browns didn't win on Sunday, but don't blame Barnidge. When players come out of nowhere to have a big season, they're usually still pretty young or there's some good reason for the sudden uptick, like benefiting from a dramatic scheme change. However, Barnidge really is that rare success story that truly came out of the blue. Barnidge, the Browns' tight end, had played seven seasons in the NFL before this one. He turned 30 on Sept. 22, so he's no youngster. His career highs for a season before this year were 13 catches and 242 yards. He had three touchdowns in 92 games. And now he's tying team records set by Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome. Barnidge caught two touchdowns against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. He has caught a touchdown in four straight games, joining Newsome as the only Browns tight ends to accomplish that. Through six games Barnidge has 27 catches, 413 yards and five touchdowns, already more than what he had the past two seasons combined in each category. Barnidge was a fast tight end with good size who was a fifth-round pick of the Panthers in 2008. He had a pretty unremarkable career in the NFL until this season. At 30, he's making up for lost time. Colin Kaepernick: Kaepernick has spent the past few weeks being ripped for his poor play, and it was justified. He has been one of the NFL's worst quarterbacks this season. But he was very good on Sunday. Kaepernick completed 16-of-27 passes for 340 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He threw a great ball on a 76-yard touchdown to Torrey Smith, the kind of pass we were used to seeing when Kaepernick was playing better earlier in his career. One good game doesn't totally turn everything around for Kaepernick, and it's pretty clear that the Baltimore Ravens' defense is pretty bad. But considering some were wondering if Blaine Gabbert should get a chance to play given Kaepernick's struggles, this was a good step. If nothing else, it's a great boost for his confidence going forward. Peyton Manning: At one point in the Denver Broncos' eventual win over the Cleveland Browns, it wasn't crazy to wonder if the Broncos at some point would have to start thinking about Brock Osweiler at quarterback. Manning wasn't great on Sunday, and he threw three more interceptions. He has seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season, an unbelievable stat. But when the Broncos absolutely needed him, Manning delivered. Manning hit Emmanuel Sanders on a perfectly-placed 75-yard touchdown down the sideline after one of his interceptions was returned for a touchdown. That pick-six gave the Browns a 20-16 lead, but Manning took it right back. Manning wasn't great the whole game, but that was the biggest play in a crazy game the Broncos ended up winning in overtime. Manning's arm strength has been a constant topic of conversation this season, but that was a beautiful throw. At some point the Broncos might have to really, truly consider what their best option at quarterback is. Any quarterback who has three more interceptions than touchdowns and a 72.5 rating six games into the season has to be evaluated honestly, no matter if he's one of the greatest to ever play or not. But the Broncos are 6-0. Manning has made some difference-making plays in some of those wins. It's a lot easier to answer hard questions with an undefeated record. LOSERS Mike McCoy: Philip Rivers deserved a better fate at Lambeau Field. The San Diego Chargers quarterback threw for 503 yards on 43-of-65 passing. Had the game gone to overtime, Rivers would have had a chance to set some NFL single-game records. And the game should have gone to overtime, but the Chargers' play-calling at the was strange. The Chargers had a goal-to-go situation, trailing the Green Bay Packers 27-20. And they also had a white-hot quarterback and a tight end in Antonio Gates who the Packers couldn't cover. They did not have their starting running back, because Melvin Gordon was benched after two fumbles. So what did they do with goal-to-go? Inside handoffs to third-down back Danny Woodhead. Twice. Woodhead got the ball on first and third downs and was stuffed each time. That's not Woodhead's strength, to say the least. Rivers threw to Woodhead — a role he's tremendous at — on fourth down and it was broken up. The Chargers overthought it. Four passes by Rivers in that spot would have had a really good shot to score a touchdown and force overtime. Two passes at the goal line just meant a really tough loss, wasting a great performance by Rivers. Mike Pettine: Another coach made a questionable call that had a direct impact on his team losing, and it came in Cleveland. When the Browns scored with 8:07 left in the fourth quarter to take a 20-16 lead, the Browns went for the 2-point conversion. The Browns are trying to go up by six points there, so if the Broncos kick two field goals against them, they only tie it. But it also meant that if the Browns didn't get the 2-point conversion and the Broncos then scored a touchdown, the Browns would be trailing by 3 points. A field goal wouldn't win the game, it would only tie it. Well, guess what happened. The Broncos scored a touchdown. The Browns' field goal later in the fourth quarter just tied the game. The game went to overtime, and the Broncos won it. #Browns HC Mike Pettine: knowing end of movie you'd like to kick it instead of going for 2 after Dansby pick 6 but felt good about decision — Nate Ulrich (@NateUlrichABJ) October 18, 2015 Not sure he should feel so good about that decision. It was dubious. And it cost his team dearly. Kansas City Chiefs: The talk this week was that Charcandrick West would take over for Jamaal Charles, out for the season with a torn ACL, or perhaps Knile Davis would emerge. West had 33 yards on nine carries. Davis had 13 yards on five carries. The Chiefs didn't have a run play longer than 9 yards. They lost 16-10 at the Minnesota Vikings. The Chiefs are in trouble, of course. They're 1-5 and in last place in the AFC West, so they're virtually playing out the string at this point. The offense is not built for Alex Smith to put it on his back. And the running game just lost one of the best backs in football. They can't replace Charles, because no team could. The rest of the season will be a struggle. For a team that had such high hopes, it's tough that the season is basically over in mid-October. Arizona Cardinals: I don't think the Cardinals are a bad team. I just wonder how good they really are. The Cardinals have played four bad teams. They are 4-0 against them. They've played two decent teams, the St. Louis Rams and the Pittsburgh Steelers. They're 0-2 in those games. The Cardinals played a Steelers team that got 6 passing yards from its starting quarterback, Michael Vick, who played into the third quarter. Then he was replaced by Landry Jones, who had never thrown a pass in three NFL seasons and had been written off by mostly everyone. And the Cardinals lost by 12 points. Maybe the Cardinals will become a Super Bowl contender, which many people have said they are early this season as they beat up bad teams. But it's tough to say they're a championship contender right now. They're not going to get to play the Saints, Bears, 49ers or Lions in the playoffs, after all. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Vick, Mariota, Hoyer leave, then return, after big hits (The Associated Press)
First, Michael Vick went to the sideline after taking a knee to the helmet. Then he returned, with the Pittsburgh Steelers saying all that was wrong was a little dirt in his eye. Already without starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers beat the Cardinals 25-13 on Sunday, despite relying on third-string QB Landry Jones, who had never taken a regular-season snap but threw a pair of touchdown passes.

Philip Rivers joins 500-yard passing club, but Chargers fall to Packers late (Shutdown Corner)
Philip Rivers joined the very rare 500-yard club with a tremendous passing performance at Lambeau Field. But it was the three yards he and the San Diego Chargers couldn't get that meant the most. Rivers completed 43 of 65 passes for 503 yards — one of only 17 times the 500-yard mark has been reached in NFL history — but his fourth-and-goal pass from the Green Bay 3-yard line was tipped away by Packers rookie DB Damarious Randall with 15 seconds remaining in a 27-20 Green Bay win on Sunday. Rivers' 43 completions tie Rich Gannon and Matt Schaub for the second most in NFL history, behind Drew Bledsoe's 45 in an overtime win for the New England Patriots in 1994. Bledsoe also holds the passes-attempted mark of 70; Rivers' 65 ties him for seventh all time in a game with Tom Brady and Steve Young. The 503 yards matches Ben Roethlisberger's total from a game, also against the Packers, back in 2009. The all-time yardage mark in a game is held by the Los Angeles Rams' Norm Van Brocklin with 554 — remarkably, it has stood since 1951, and only a few quarterbacks even have been within striking distance of it. ( We wrote about the vaunted record last season when Roethlisberger carved up the Indianapolis Colts for 522 yards, becoming the only two-time 500-yard QB.) There didn't appear to be a huge talent gap between the 6-0 Packers and the 2-4 Chargers, who outgained Green Bay 548-370 and nearly doubled them (32 to 17) in first downs. But Malcom Floyd dropped a touchdown, Rivers got away with a few interceptible passes, the Chargers commited nine penalties and rookie running back Melvin Gordon lost a fumble late in the first quarter. After that Gordon fumble, the Chargers almost completely abandoned the run altogether. From that point on, they attempted only 11 rushes on their next 54 plays, gaining a mere 20 yards on the ground. If the ground game doesn't develop, then Rivers is going to have to carry this team if it had any chance of getting back into the AFC West race, which has been dominated by the 6-0 Denver Broncos. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. The Latest from NFL Week 6: Starks gets 2 early TDs for Pack (The Associated Press)
James Starks just accomplished something no Packer had done in nearly 20 years. Starks caught a 5-yard touchdown pass and added a 65-yard TD run in the first quarter, to help Green Bay take a 14-3 lead against visiting San Diego. On the scoring run, Starks went left behind a pile at the line of scrimmage before spinning right to find open field.

Landry Jones, emerging Steelers defense earn huge win over Cardinals (Shutdown Corner)
Their offensive players might be dropping like flies, but the Pittsburgh Steelers suddenly have tapped into a surprising well of hope. In a game in which Mike Vick left the game twice — once with dirt in his eye, once with a hamstring injury — and left tackle Kelvin Beachum went down with a potentially serious knee injury, the Steelers turned to two players who had yet to play a single game this season to earn a crucial win over the Arizona Cardinals by the historically rare score of 25-13. Landry Jones, he of the zero NFL pass attempts entering Sunday, came off the bench (twice) to replace Vick and deliver a gem against a Cardinals defense that led the NFL in interception percentage, ranked in fifth in passing yards allowed and fifth in the league in points allowed. Jones completed 8 of 12 passes for 168 yards — that's 14 yards an attempt, kids — with two TD passes in just about a half a game. Both touchdowns went to Martavis Bryant, who was suspended for the first four games of the season and missed making his season debut in Week 5 when he tweaked his knee prior to the thrilling win over the San Diego Chargers. Bryant stepped in for the first time on Sunday and caught six passes for 137 yards, including the 10-yard touchdown that gave the Steelers the lead for good in the third quarter and an 88-yard catch and run that put the game on ice with just under two minutes to play. In between, the Steelers' defense — which was without starters Will Allen, Ryan Shazier and Jarvis Jones — erased the Cardinals' respectable run game (20 carries, 55 yards, long run of 11) and held Arizona to three points in the final 30:47 of the game. The Steelers tallied six tackles for loss, deflected eight of Carson Palmer's 45 pass attempts and hit Palmer seven times. The key play of the game on defense was Mike Mitchell picking off Palmer in the end zone as the Cardinals were going for the lead with just over two minutes left. After a Steelers penalty, Bryant scored his second touchdown to win it. The stark reality is that Ben Roethlisberger isn't likely to return next week, which means Mike Tomlin might have to go with the — don't laugh — hot hand of Jones next week against the flagging Kansas City Chiefs before a Week 8 showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals. Vick was struggling in the game Sunday (3 of 8 passing, 6 yards, sack taken; 47 yards rushing) and prior to that. It has been clear that offensive coordinator Todd Haley hasn't trusted Vick to make big throws, and this is now the third game in a row Antonio Brown has been held in check relatively. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Greg Cosell's Look Ahead: The Packers' creative, underrated defense (Shutdown Corner)
The Green Bay Packers’ defense has gone mostly unnoticed because the offense is so explosive. But the defense has played really well this year too. I give defensive coordinator Dom Capers a lot of credit for the job he has done so far this season. The Packers have been creative, not only with their coverages but also in offering different looks up front. It’s possible there’s no defense in the NFL as multiple with their looks and their utilization of personnel up front, and in their hybrid coverages, as the Packers. [ Enter Yahoo's 50/50 Contest for an even bigger shot at winning! Top half wins cash ] Against the St. Louis Rams last week, the Packers’ defense did a lot of things to force Rams quarterback Nick Foles into a bad game. The Packers took advantage of an overmatched Rams offensive line, and also threw a lot of different coverages at Foles. Here’s an example of a hybrid coverage that led to an interception. On third-and-9, the Packers came out in a dime defense. They played a zone concept to the three-receiver side, and a man-to-man concept to the single-receiver side. Then when defensive tackle Datone Jones got pressure (and pressure has been a consistent positive for the Packers defense all year), Foles had an undefined throw. Tight end Jared Cook stopped when he read the zone concept. Foles threw it as if the Packers were playing man, and Cook’s defender was taking him across he field. Cornerback Quinten Rollins had an interception and he returned it 45 yards for the score. Give a lot of credit to the hybrid coverage for causing that mistake.

Rested Cardinals await Steelers - in Pittsburgh (The Associated Press)
After a rout of the Lions at Detroit, Bruce Arians took his Cardinals to a resort in West Virginia rather than head back to Arizona. With another road game in the East on Sunday at Pittsburgh, the travel itinerary seemed to make plenty of sense. Arians spent eight seasons in Pittsburgh, mostly as offensive coordinator, winning two Super Bowls before being exiled.

Young Packers secondary thriving with Chargers up next (The Associated Press)
The Packers' youthful secondary has more than weathered the absence of veteran safety Morgan Burnett the past few weeks. Defensive backs are taking advantage of one of the league's best pass rushes and capitalizing on quarterback mistakes. Coach Mike McCarthy likes how Micah Hyde and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix are filling the communication void with the vocal Burnett working his way back from a nagging calf injury.

Browns tight end Gary Barnidge emerges as big playmaker (The Associated Press)
An avid film buff and part-time critic, Browns tight end Gary Barnidge takes 10 fans and a few teammates to the movies every week. Barnidge leads the Browns with 24 receptions, only 20 fewer than his combined total over the past seven seasons. In last week's 33-30 overtime win against Baltimore, Barnidge had eight catches for 139 yards and made the play of the game - and maybe the season - by hauling in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Josh McCown using his legs, feet and butt.

Official suspended, crew admonished over San Diego clock error (Shutdown Corner)
Because of an 18-second mistake in the game clock on Monday night, an official has been suspended for a game and the crew's evaluation will be impacted by the error. Side judge Rob Vernatchi will not work Week 6, the NFL announced. Pro Football Talk first reported of the suspension and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport verified it through a league spokesman . The league also said the clock error in the Pittsburgh Steelers-San Diego Chargers game will affect the evaluations of the other six members of the crew, led by referee Pete Morelli. With 2:56 left in the game, the Chargers kicked off and it was a touchback. The Steelers' first play after that came with 2:38 left on the clock . No time should have run off. Although the NFL hires in-stadium clock operators, the side judge is responsible for the timing. That's why Vernatchi was punished. The clock operator in San Diego is also under review, a league spokesman told Rapoport. The game also ended with a clock issue, as Le'Veon Bell seemed to score with one second left, but the last second was run off. The clock problems would have become a bigger deal this week had the Steelers not scored. The 18 seconds lost at the start of their final drive, and the second that vanished at the end, would have been talking points had Bell not scored on the 1-yard run as the game ended. The Steelers would had plenty to complain about had time run out with them on the 1-yard line. The NFL has had some officiating controversies this season, as usual. The suspension of Vernatchi shows the league doesn't want any more. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Side judge who missed clock runoff suspended 1 game (The Associated Press)
The NFL has suspended side judge Rob Vernatchi for one game for not managing the clock properly in the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh's game at San Diego on Monday night. The side judge is in charge of monitoring the game clock, which is kept on the stadium scoreboard. Vernatchi ''will not officiate in Week 6 as a result of the failure to notice that the game clock was incorrectly started,'' league spokesman Michael Signora said Thursday.

Packers happy with 5-0 start, but look to rev up offense (The Associated Press)
Only with the Green Bay Packers could there be consternation about an offense for a team off to a 5-0 start and averaging 27 points a game. Following two sluggish weeks - at least by the Packers' standards - Green Bay is determined to improve when the San Diego Chargers come to Titletown this weekend. ''Monday was a little rough in that room,'' McCarthy said, referring to meetings this week with Rodgers and the offense.

Chargers-Packers Preview (The Associated Press)
Coming off a rare pedestrian performance, Aaron Rodgers is seeking a rebound - something he doesn't need as badly as the San Diego Chargers do. Rodgers looks to return to his stellar ways and keep the Green Bay Packers undefeated Sunday when they host a Chargers team trying to regroup from a final-play loss. Green Bay (5-0) kept rolling despite an error-prone effort from Rodgers against St. Louis at Lambeau Field last week.

Confident Tomlin catalyst on sideline for resilient Steelers (The Associated Press)
Mike Tomlin doesn't make decisions based on job security. A few inches away from victory in San Diego on Monday night and with 5 seconds to go, Tomlin eschewed the percentages and the chip-shot that would have forced overtime for something more daring. Moments later, Bell stretched the ball across the goal line at the buzzer - give or take the 18 seconds that mysteriously vanished at the start of the final drive - and the Steelers had an unlikely 24-20 win that revealed a mindset that has endeared him to his bosses and the men he leads onto the field each week.

NFL admits clock error at end of Chargers-Steelers game (Shutdown Corner)
The NFL admitted Tuesday that officials erred in the closing minutes of Monday night's San Diego-Pittsburgh game, as nearly 20 seconds ran off the clock, time the Steelers were supposed to have. Fortunately for the league, referee Pete Morelli and side judge Rob Vernatchi, who is responsible for making sure the game clock is being operated properly, Pittsburgh was able to get the game-winning score in the time it was (erroneously) given when running back Le'Veon Bell bulled over the goal line with zeroes showing on the clock. [ Play Yahoo Daily Fantasy and get a 100% deposit bonus with your first deposit ] NFL spokesman Michael Signora emailed this explanation to several reporters: "With 2:56 remaining in the fourth quarter, San Diego kicked off to Pittsburgh. The kick resulted in a touchback. By rule, the game clock does not start if the receiving team possesses the ball in the end zone and does not carry it into the field of play. "Because of an error by the clock operator, the game clock was incorrectly started before the Steelers ' first play from scrimmage following the touchback. That first down snap came with 2:38 left to play instead of 2:56, a difference of 18 seconds. "The official game time is kept on the stadium scoreboard, but it is the responsibility of the side judge to supervise the timing of the game. Had the side judge or any of the other six on-field officials noticed the timing error, they could have corrected it. "The game clock is not subject to instant replay review unless there is a timing issue on the last play of the first half or the last play of the game. The performance of the clock operator and game officials will be reviewed per the standard procedure for reviewing every play of every game." In-stadium clock operators are hired by the NFL and usually have experience officiating at the college level. The Steelers are now 1-1 with Michael Vick as quarterback; Ben Roethlisberger suffered a knee injury in Week 2 against St. Louis.

NFL denies DeAngelo Williams' request to raise breast cancer awareness all season (Shutdown Corner)
The NFL has already come under fire for purporting to care about women's issues as the league levies underwhelming suspensions on domestic abusers, and this won't do much for public perception. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and as a result many corporations take the opportunity to do their part, spreading the word and raising money for a cause that affects one in eight U.S. women (and a small percentage of men, too). The NFL's " A Crucial Catch " effort to encourage annual screenings is no different, as the league donates 100 percent of the proceeds from its pink merchandise and auctions off game-worn pink items all in an effort to raise awareness for a deadly disease. That's all good stuff. The cause is near and dear to Pittsburgh Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams' heart, because he lost his mother Sandra Hill in May 2014 and four aunts all to the disease. That's horrible, so you can see why Williams would prefer to raise breast cancer awareness throughout the year — not just in October. The NFL isn't cool with that. As Lisa Salters first reported during the Monday Night Football broadcast of the Steelers' 24-20 win over the San Diego Chargers — and soon relayed by ESPN colleague Field Yates on Twitter — Williams' request to wear pink throughout the season was denied by the NFL. That would of course be a violation of the league's 31-page outline on equipment rules and would carry a $5,787 fine for a first offense. Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams wanted to wear pink all season to honor his mother who lost her battle with breast cancer. The NFL said no. — Field Yates (@FieldYates) October 13, 2015 Williams has long found ways to circumnavigate the rules, even dyeing his dreadlocks and painting his toenails pink last season, but how dare he try to don a pair of pink cleats in November. Outrageous! This season is dedicated to u Mom. Love u and miss u. #PinkPanther http://pic.twitter.com/TlEw8061cG — DeAngelo Williams (@DeAngeloRB) September 7, 2014 Next thing you know players would be wearing rainbow flag strips under their eyes in support of LGBT rights, and the NFL certainly couldn't be seen doing that. (I hope you sense the sarcasm here.) Because of a series of public relations missteps in the recent past, the NFL has probably caught excessive blowback on its "A Crucial Catch" campaign — namely, that the league's apparel partners still profit off the pink merchandise , even if all of the NFL's licensing proceeds are donated, and that those donations go to awareness rather than actual research. Even if it's only a month out of the year, it's still a positive for the cause, but you'd think the league could make an exception in Williams' case. What's the worst that could happen? Le'Veon Bell says, "Hey, why can't I wear pink to raise more awareness"? In fact, Williams made the best point about all of this when writing for MMQB in May 2014. Breast cancer, whether I like it or not, is part of my family’s story. That’s why I am so passionate about raising awareness, because I have seen firsthand how it can impact others. One time, a lady came up to me and said she was going to get examined just because she saw me wearing pink cleats during a game. I walked away thinking, Wow, pink is really so much more than just a color. It’s a lifesaver. It’s awareness. If we reach one, we reach millions. If we reach millions, we’re doing our job and getting closer to finding a cure . Remember, only if it's in October, DeAngelo. Otherwise, it just doesn't benefit the NFL brand. - - - - - - - Ben Rohrbach is a contributor for Ball Don't Lie and Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? (Reuters) - Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has proven to be a late-game daredevil, not afraid of taking a gamble in the final seconds, and it paid off with the most dramatic win of the season on Monday night. The Steelers, undeterred by the game's final seconds or past results, edged the San Diego Chargers 24-20 on a risky play call as time expired. NFL Power Rankings: Can the Seattle Seahawks rebound again? (Shutdown Corner)
While it's easy to bury the Seattle Seahawks now, it's probably worth a look back at last season. The Seahawks are 2-3 after a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Last year, they started 3-3. After that 3-3 start, the Seahawks lost two more times: A four-point loss at Kansas City on Nov. 16, and when Malcolm Butler picked off Russell Wilson a yard short of a Super Bowl title. That's it. After 3-3, they had 11 wins and two losses. Worth noting. Also, you can make a case that the Seahawks could easily be 4-1 this season. They led in the final minute of regulation in two of their three losses. If the Rams don't get a long touchdown after a Seattle defensive back fell down and Tyler Eifert doesn't make a circus catch for the Bengals in the final two minutes Sunday, the Seahawks are about where we thought they'd be, with just one loss at the Green Bay Packers. But, of course, the Seahawks are just as close to being 1-4. The Detroit Lions, who were inches away from taking a late lead and got hosed on a non-call on the same play , think so anyway. Maybe the Seahawks bounce back, but at this point you have to wonder if something is truly off with this team. The fearful Seahawks defense has had its moments, for sure, but was also that crazy Calvin Johnson play away from blowing second-half leads in four games this season. Andy Dalton might be having a fine season, but it's still alarming that the Seahawks allowed him to put together four scoring drives in the fourth quarter and overtime to overcome a 24-7 lead. The offense has had its issues. The fact that the Seahawks couldn't put away a 17-point fourth-quarter lead is on the offense, too. Seattle had two first downs in its final five drives, from the last play of the third quarter through overtime. Just a few more first downs and the game is over, and Seattle couldn't do it. Not having Marshawn Lynch played a role in that. But it also doesn't seem that easy to explain away. The offensive line isn't good, and Russell Wilson will eventually tire of having to make defensive linemen miss every play. Still, Jimmy Graham isn't a big part of the offense. And the defense doesn't look so scary anymore. The Seahawks can turn things around and make a Super Bowl. That's what they did last season after three early losses. There's still a lot of talent on the roster. But something seems off about this team. Until further notice, the Seahawks can't be considered contenders anymore. However, they'll always be lurking, just like last year at about this time. Here are Shutdown Corner's power rankings after Week 5: 32. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-4, Last week: 32) If you score 31 points against the Buccaneers, you have to win, period. 31. New Orleans Saints (1-4, LW: 29) The Sean Payton-Rob Ryan relationship has always seemed uncomfortable, but the good news is it won't last much longer. Ryan is clearly hanging on by a string, and there are a ton of rumors that teams will make a run at Payton this offseason, too. 30. San Francisco 49ers (1-4, LW: 30) The University of Michigan is 5-1 and one of the most improved teams in college football this season. 29. Detroit Lions (0-5, LW: 25)
