Starting offenses struggle, Cardinals beat Raiders 30-23 (The Associated Press)

Even though Carson Palmer spent much of the first half on his back and running from the Oakland defense, Arizona coach Bruce Arians is not concerned about his offensive line. Palmer was sacked three times and threw two interceptions before the Cardinals rallied in the second half to beat the Raiders 30-23 on Sunday night when Marion Grice ran for an 11-yard score with 31 seconds left. ''Pass protection is not an issue,'' Arians said.

Washington Redskins coaches and front office personnel want to part ways with quarterback Robert Griffin III, but team owners are against the move, ESPN reported Sunday. The Redskins have even told other teams they may be willing to trade Griffin, but no other teams seem interested. Chargers say Seahawks rookie Frank Clark tried to punch Philip Rivers (Shutdown Corner)

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune , San Diego Chargers offensive players were not happy with Seattle Seahawks rookie Frank Clark after they believe he tried to punch quarterback Philip Rivers Saturday night. After a sack by Jordan Hill, Clark was seen scrapping with Chargers offensive players. Left tackle King Dunlap yanked Clark out of the scrum and received a 15-yard penalty, but it's one Dunlap said he's willing to take to protect his quarterback, whom his Chargers teammates clearly believed was being mistreated. The U-T story quotes an unnamed Chargers player with the punching claim. "That guy was on top of Philip, and that's our quarterback," Dunlap said. "I protect the quarterback at all costs." Added right guard D.J. Fluker: "That's our quarterback. We're going to protect the jewel of our offense." Clark has had an interesting entry to the NFL. He was a second-round pick of the Seahawks and their top overall selection despite a rocky history at Michigan, which included expulsion for his involvement in a domestic violence arrest that later was plea bargained down to a misdemeanor this spring. The Seahawks say they did ample background work on Clark and have sought to give him a second chance in Seattle , but the pick earned quite a bit of negative attention locally. Clark had a fantastic preseason debut with the Seahawks and looks to fit the mold of the team's feisty, ferocious defense. From the video of the Rivers play, it's tough to tell what exactly Clark was guilty of, but the Chargers clearly were upset. When asked about the play in question, Clark relayed a story ( via the  Seattle Times )   to the media after the game abour Richard Sherman telling him to try to keep his emotions in check. “Man this game, it’s a lot of emotions involved," Clark said. “I’m a real emotional player but there are ways you react and ways you don’t react. You’ve got to be smart in this game. That was something Sherm was telling me afterwards, that whole thing, even though I didn’t get called for anything, just to avoid situations like that.” Clark will make this Seahawks team, and it's not clear — beyond the Chargers' accusations — exactly what he did wrong. But avoiding any bad situation right now sounds like a good idea for the rookie.

Chargers say Seahawks rookie attacked QB Rivers (AFP)

San Diego offensive linemen have accused Seattle Seahawks rookie defensive lineman Frank Clark of trying to punch Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers during a pre-season game. Several Chargers players were angered when team-mate King Dunlap was given a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness as he yanked Clark from a pile of players after Rivers had been sacked in the Saturday night contest. Dunlap told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he did not see the incident but said he wanted to protect Rivers after hearing his teammates yelling at Clark.

More preseason injuries: Three Packers injured, including Randall Cobb (Shutdown Corner)

The Green Bay Packers had to be holding their breath at the sight of yet another wide receiver going down. Randall Cobb suffered a shoulder injury against the Philadelphia Eagles, the severity of which is unknown. Just last week the team lost No. 1 receiver Jordy Nelson to a season-ending torn ACL and cannot afford to lose Cobb to a major injury. The good news (for now) is that NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said a broken collarbone has been ruled out for Cobb. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] But the team suffered two other injuries — starting offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga (ankle) and safety-corner-return man Micah Hyde (neck) also left the game. There were other notable injuries around the NFL Saturday night: • Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey suffered a left knee injury and has an MRI scheduled for Sunday but is optimistic he'll be back without missing a game. With the shaky status of the guards, plus the unknown health of left tackle Branden Albert, the Dolphins can't afford many hits up front. • New York Jets first-round pick Leonard Williams suffered a knee injury. He was listed as questionable to return but didn't and never appeared on the sidline again. He's assumed to be the Week 1 starter with Sheldon Richardson's four-game suspension to start the season, so losing Williams for any significant length of time would be a big blow. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that X-rays came back negative and that Williams suffered a bone bruise, but the severity is important to determine — he still could miss the opener. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football: Enter our $1 Million Week 1 contest ] • The San Diego Chargers appeared to avoid a massive hit when Philip Rivers took a hit on his throwing hand but was seen on the sideline without the hand in question wrapped up. Although he was pulled from the game, Rivers said he could have gone back into the game, you know, if it mattered. • Likewise, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton left the game against the Chicago Bears with a neck injury but was "fine" according to head coach Marvin Lewis. • Former Florida State defensive tackles Timmy Jernigan (Baltimore Ravens) and Eddie Goldman (Bears) left their respective games. The second-year Jernigan suffered a knee injury, and the rookie Goldman suffered a concussion. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Peyton Manning can't feel anything in his fingertips, but who needs that? (Shutdown Corner)

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning revealed a fascinating and shocking nugget to The MMQB's Peter King about his throwing hand. “I can’t feel anything in my fingertips,” Manning said. “It’s crazy. I’ve talked to a doctor recently who said,  Don’t count on the feeling coming back. It was hard for me for about two years, because one doctor told me I could wake up any morning and it might come back. So you wake up every day thinking,  Today’s the day!  Then it’s not.” So if you've cultivated your own theories on why Manning "struggled" last season (the dude did finish fourth in passing yards, second in TDs and fifth in passer rating among full-time starters), you might want to include the fact that he can't fully or comfortably grip the football as at least part of the reason why. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] But Manning says his downhill slide late last season to being sick against the San Diego Chargers last Dec. 14, which helped exacerbate his quad injury — another huge culprit for his struggles. Manning completed a respectable 14-of-20 passes that night in the 22-10 win, but the Broncos leaned heavily on the run (38 attempts) and turned to Brock Osweiler for a series before the end of the first half. “I threw up all night,” he said. “Then, in the game, I moved to the right on a simple scramble and my quad cramped on me. It lingered. I couldn’t shake it the rest of the year. I really studied it hard this off-season, whether it could linger into this year or whether it was isolated. I just think I got dehydrated, and that caused it. I don’t think you can blame it on my age. It was just an isolated thing. I’ve made it through every other season, and this off-season I went through a state of the union physically, if you will, and I started training earlier and made some dietary changes.” The 39-year-old Manning has weighed everything in the twilight of his career, including money and how best to handle his final year(s) in the NFL. He even talked to Derek Jeter, who told Manning, “Do what you want—not what  they  want.” Said Manning on his contract, taking a paycut this season to stay in Denver, as just a few whispers swirled about the possibility of him moving to another team this offseason : “I talked about it with Ashley, about what I wanted to do, and I wanted to be here,” he said. But SI.com has reported that Manning has shown more zip in his passes this offseason, and the hope — even with a shaky offensive line — remains high for Manning and the Broncos. So even with a few physical ailments and age working against Manning, are you really counting him or his team out completely this season? - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. 'L.A. Rams!' Fans fans flock to watch practice with team's future in doubt (Shutdown Corner)

In the three-team monte for Los Angeles, the team that's farthest away geographically — the St. Louis Rams — might have the strongest local support. Will the Rams return to L.A., the city they left in 1994? We don't yet know that, and last week's owners meeting outside Chicago to discuss that very issue provided few tangible details. But if Monday's practice session betwee the Rams and Dallas Cowboys is any indication, there could be some real pull for the NFL to consider when it decides how it will proceed with a return to the nation's second-biggest market almost a foregone conclusion at this point. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] Welcoming the Rams to their practice in Oxnard, Calif. ( approximately 64 miles from the proposed Ingelwood NFL site that Rams owner Stan Kroenke is pitching) was a crowd of fans unlike anything the team has seen in its training-camp sessions back in St. Louis. According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Jim Thomas , there were 7,739 fans — many wearing vintage and current Rams gear — for Monday’s practice, which was nearly 5,400 more fans than were at Sunday’s Cowboys-only practice session. Another key person in attendance: Kroenke, aka "Silent Stan" for his quietude on the whole L.A. thing publicly, who has yet to make it out to a Rams camp day back home. The silence, in this case, may be deafening. But the din in L.A. also speaks volumes. Per Thomas, the chants for the possible prodigal-son Rams were impossible to ignore. He wrote: They chanted “LA Rams! LA Rams!” Then they shouted “Kroenke! Kroenke! Kroenke!” Thomas also reports that Rams fans attending practice in Earth City, Mo. 10 days ago — the day NFL Network was visiting for a broadcast — were asked to discard their pro-St. Louis/anti-Kroenke signs. Several Rams fans also made the trip to suburban Chicago for the owners meeting to voice their support for their team, even though the momentum appears to point to manifest diestiny for the midwest-based team. Having an owner such as Kroenke who appears so bent on moving the team, plus the buoy of a powerful owner such as Jerry Jones ( per ESPN.com ) offering support during the Rams' "coincidental" visit out west for practice, has to be disheartening for Rams fans back in Missouri. "What I do think is [the Rams] have such a traditional visibility and a traditional following here in Southern California," Jones said. "And that's the main positive that they have — and that they've got a great owner and they've got a great franchise. It's a good thing for the NFL to have these teams that have the qualifications they have to think about this Los Angeles market." Although the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders, conjoined on a bid to move to Carson, Calif., are not out of the mix to move, the Rams situation appears to be on the strongest footing right now for relocation. And fans out west are starting to catch on. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Email him at edholm@yahoo-inc.com or follow him on Twitter! Woodhead scores TD in return to Bolts, who beat 'Boys 17-7 (The Associated Press)

Danny Woodhead scored on an 8-yard run in his first game since September and the San Diego Chargers, whose owner has angered fans by exploring a move to Los Angeles, beat the Dallas Cowboys 17-7 on Thursday night in an exhibition opener. Woodhead scampered through a big hole provided by the rebuilt line to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter. The game was played two days after Carmen Policy, who is spearheading stadium efforts in Carson, told NFL owners that ''The Chargers and Raiders are committed to Los Angeles.'' The Chargers, owned by the Spanos family, walked away from negotiations for a new stadium in San Diego in mid-June and are focusing on trying to move to Carson along with the archrival Oakland Raiders.

Rookie watch: Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Ameer Abdullah could stand out (Shutdown Corner)

The preseason kicks off in earnest, with the Hall of Fame Game a simple appetite whetter. The first-round picks in that game, the Pittsburgh Steelers' Bud Dupree and the Minnesota Vikings' Trae Waynes, didn't put their best feet forward. Dupree led the Steelers in defensive snaps but was in on only two tackles, one 18 yards downfield. Waynes was roasted a couple times in a humbling debut. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] But both of those players have ample time to bounce back, and there are scores more interesting rookie to look forward to in their professional debuts. Here are a few key ones we are watching most closely: Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston — Obviously. We're in Minneapolis to watch Winston in his first pro game on Saturday against the Vikings, and based on the lukewarm reports out of Tampa so far (although Lovie Smith has said Winston is improving) we'll go in with very cautious optimism. Winston started slowly in his college debut before coming out firing, and we're hoping to see an extended look at the No. 1 pick in the draft going up against a talented Vikings defense that was chewed out by Mike Zimmer in its final training camp practice on Thursday. Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota — Obvious, Part 2. Shutdown Corner's Jay Busbee will be covering the event of Mariota's debut, against the Atlanta Falcons, and it will be interesting to see if Mariota's camp accuracy can carry over into his debut. Based on reports, Mariota has completed over 60 percent of his passes in full-team and 7-on-7 work and has not thrown a single interception. Bad Titans defense or good Mariota? We won't get that answer fully, not against a rebuilding Falcons defense, but we might get an idea how he looks under the lights Friday night.

Diehard Chargers fans travel to owners meeting in effort to save their team (Shutdown Corner)

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Two San Diego Chargers fans are in the midst of a strange, emotional road trip this week. Johnny Abundez and Carlos Mora, both lifelong Chargers fans who hadn't seen each other for years outside social media, decided long ago they'd meet up to make the trip to see fan favorite Junior Seau be inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio last weekend. Then when they heard the NFL's owners were meeting the following Tuesday in Chicago — a quick seven-hour jaunt — they had to change their plans make an appearance there, too. Why? Because the Chargers have a tenuous future in San Diego and are in strong consideration to be relocated to Los Angeles as soon as the 2016 season. That’s what the owners were in town to discuss. Abudez and Mora wanted the league to know they will do their little part — whatever they can to have their voice heard and help keep their team where they believe it belongs. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] “We all love our teams, but for us, it’s more than that,” Abudez told Shutdown Corner. “That’s why we’re here.” They held up “Save Our Bolts” signs, outnumbered by scores of St. Louis Rams fans who made the shorter trip up I-55 to picket for their team, but Abudez and Mora remained undaunted. To them, the fact that there were only two of them outside the Hyatt Regency while billionaire owners met inside (and may not have seen them) is immaterial. “We are being heard,” said Abudez, a proud member of SaveOurBolts.org. “We do a lot of community service. We have made a lot of contacts with different groups and different fans around the country. Even Raiders fans; they’re fighting with us. “We’re not billionaires. We’re blue-collar individuals who spend a lot of money on season tickets, parking, all that. We’re still loyal until the end. They say they want us to be loyal, and we’re not always feeling the loyalty back. They see us as coins, not dollars.” And Abundez and Mora have spent a lot of their cents and dollars to hit the road for their Chargers. First, it has been making the rounds as the Chargers, the city of San Diego, league officials and other politicians meet at different venues with the future of the franchise hanging in the balance. “We met with [San Diego] mayor [Kevin] Faulconer, members of city council, Chargers fans, we’ve talked to fans from other 31 teams, we were at the Carson town hall meetings,” Abundez said. “There were no more than 13 fans out there, but we went. We went because we felt we had to.” They also felt they had to watch Seau’s induction, even tailgating with most of the Seau family in Canton, and yet — in typical Chargers fashion — there was a veil of awkwardness to the whole weekend, with the Hall initially not letting Seau’s family speak on his behalf before allowing his daughter, Sydney, deliver a memorable speech and interview to honor her late father. “You know what? Sydney did an awesome job,” Abundez said. “The New York Times did an awesome job bringing [the speech she wanted to give] to light. If it wasn’t for that and the campaign that we had — we started calling the Pro Football Hall of Fame, emailing them, everything — I don’t know that Junior’s passion, his talent, his legacy … it might not have been honored properly.” And then it was onto Chicago, where Abundez and Mora made the drive for a day of standing in the heat and holding up signs, staying with friends (Chicago Bears fans who offered their support) to save a few bucks after what has become quite an expensive campaign. Inside the hotel, there would be some good news: NFL executive vice president did say that the Chargers have made a "significant amount of progress" in keeping the team in San Diego, compounding the earlier news that the city has proposed up a joint-financing plan to hold onto the Chargers for a possible stadium in Mission Valley. Abundez is cautiously optimistic. In his experience these past few years, pounding the pavement and getting daily and weekly updates on the progress (or lack thereof), Abundez isn’t about to celebrate over a few kernels of promise. Especially when team owner Dean Spanos has gone silent of late. “Right now, with everything going on, “ he said, “this government that’s there with Mayor Faulconer, the city attorney, the county supervisor, plus the city council … they were saying that the No. 1 choice was San Diego up until a few months ago. It seems like every time San Diego came up with something good, they came out with negativity. The NFL bylaw says, pretty much, they have to try to work something out with the local city. “I’m still concerned ... very.” Will two Chargers fans make a difference? No, not likely. But Abundez is willing to carry the torch for thousands of others who support the Chargers and do the heavy lifting they cannot. In a way, he figures it’s his duty. Now the awkward question: If the team was to make the move two hours up the coast, would Abundez still support the team and go to the games? “I’m a Charger fan for life,” he said. “I’ll always support the team. But will I go to L.A. every other weekend? I’m not sure I will, and I’m not sure my friends will either. I think I’d rather go to the road games and hang out with the fans of other teams. I’ve met so many of them on the road, and they have our backs. “But the team … I’m not sure.” The beat goes on for Los Angeles, and sometime in the next four or five months we’ll get a good idea if the Chargers-Raiders tandem in Carson or the Rams-Inglewood project are the most likely L.A. story. To that end, Abundez still wonders why the league wants to go there in the first place. “The reason the NFL left Los Angeles 20 years ago was basically greed, and it’s the same now,” he said. “So they’re going to go back and make something work that didn’t work … over more greed? Why, because the Clippers sold for a way-above-average price? “That makes no sense to me. Who in L.A. is doing what we are doing, fighting for a team? I don’t see anyone. The fans are the ones that are going to suffer over this if they leave. We’ve already seen what the TV revenue sharing is, that you could basically just have a speaker out there and have fans cheering if that’s what you want.” “The fans give their heart and soul. And yet we’re most likely to lose. That’s sad to me.” - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Owners hear update on Los Angeles relocation bids (AFP)

National Football League club owners heard updates on Tuesday on possible relocations by three teams to Los Angeles, with a decision over who might play there in 2016 possibly coming by January. Owners of the San Diego Chargers, St. Louis Rams and Oakland Raiders all are looking at moving back to Los Angeles, a market that could see up to two teams playing there as soon as next year. San Diego officials pitched their latest stadium offer in hopes of keeping the Chargers from moving up the California coast.

NFL takes another step closer to team(s) in L.A. ... but which one(s)? (Shutdown Corner)

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The NFL took another step toward placing a team (or two) in the second-biggest market by hearing presentations for possible franchise relocation to Los Angeles. The 32 teams' owners heard presentations from three member clubs — the San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams — who are battling local stadium issues and considering an L.A. move as soon as the 2016 season.  "There is not a possibility that's being taken off the table," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said, although it should be pointed out that the league is not considering the possibility of all three teams (and two stadiums) joining the L.A. market. "We're just looking for the right solution." [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] The Raiders and Chargers are paired up for a stadium project that would drop in Carson, California, and the second presentation came from the solo-flying Rams and owner Stan Kroenke, who would plan to great ground for a stadium in Inglewood. “I guess you could use the metaphor of [it being] musical chairs,” New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch told a small group of media. “There’s a bit of that going on." Asked about the potential awkwardness of one or two teams being left out in the cold as far as L.A. is concerned if relocation doesn't work out for those clubs, Goodell said: "Those are the circumstances as they are. You take a risk if you file for relocation of whether it'll be approved." No votes were taken on Los Angeles, but this was the only topic discussed at the Tuesday meeting. "We simply had a discussion," Goodell said. Eventually, big topics such as temporary stadium sites and pricy relocation fees will come into sharper focus. But what's becoming clear — even if Goodell wouldn't bite on the subject when asked — is that there's a better chance of a team, or teams, ending up in L.A. in 2016 than not. Tisch put those odds at "better than 50-50." But time is ticking quickly to decide who ends up where. Traditionally, the window for teams to apply for relocation is open from Jan. 1 to Feb. 15. But Goodell said that timeline could be shortened or moved up, and longtime San Francisco 49ers executive Carmen Policy — who is leading the Carson bid on behalf of the Chargers and Raiders — predicted that it would happen "prior to the Super Bowl," which will be played in Santa Clara on Feb. 7, 2016. Kroenke presented the Rams first, followed by Policy on behalf of the Chargers and Raiders. Both groups were said to have presented themselves well. "The presentation that was made today by the Raiders-Chargers group was really, really well done, as was Stan’s presentation,” Tisch said. The Chargers-Raiders pairing was viewed as an odd one initially, but these unlikely allies have united under Policy's watch, and he says he's thrilled with the results to this point. "We were able to cover everything we thought was important, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a more attentive audience," Policy said. “We felt our presentation went exactly the way we hoped it would go. “What [the other owners] thinking, I can’t tell you." In a brief statement while leaving the meeting, Raiders owner Mark Davis said, "As I've said all along, Oakland is still the place that we [have] wanted to be, and we'll just see what happens." Policy said he's hoping to make this California dream come true with a stadium that would be shovel-ready as soon as the project is green-lit, and the new stadium could be ready for the 2019 season. The league has survived without a team in L.A. since both the Rams and Raiders left the city following the 1994 season, but it clearly is trying to get back. Although the NFL is not guaranteed to be there by the 2016 season, all signs point toward a strong likelihood — and three eager teams going past the leverage stage with their local markets. We should know sometime in the next four or five months who the most serious candidates are as the process continues. Policy said the Chargers-Raiders pairing, even with NFL executive vice president Eric Grubman noting that the Chargers have made a "significant amount of progress" in keeping the team in San Diego, could be the perfect duo to cure the league's L.A. blues.  "The Carson situation solves the NFL’s dilemma in California," Policy said. "It makes California healthy. … It works.” - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Email him at edholm@yahoo-inc.com or follow him on Twitter! Carmen Policy: 'The Chargers and Raiders are committed to Los Angeles' (Shutdown Corner)

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Carmen Policy, the former San Francisco 49ers executive who is quarterbacking the efforts of the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders for their joint prospective Los Angeles venture, said that both teams are all systems go for relocation. "The Chargers and Raiders are committed to Los Angeles," said Policy, who finished his presentation with NFL owners at the Hyatt Regency on Tuesday about the status of the proposed Carson stadium project. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] Policy said the stadium would be "shovel-ready" upon the project being green-lit and that the 2019 season would be the first realistic season the two teams would be able to play in a shared venue. "We've heard people saying they could do 2018," Policy said, perhaps in a veiled shot at the rival proposal in Ingelwood for the St. Louis Rams, "but that just wouldn't be realistic. We'd be ready for 2019."  Policy has nothing to do with the Rams and their possible move to Los Angeles. Asked about the other proposal, Policy made a humorous quip at the former NFC West rival team. "I'm trying to pretend the Rams don't exist," Policy said with a smile, making it clear he was kidding. Policy added that a league vote on relocation would not happen in as early as October, as some have predicted, but very well could occur in January — and most definitely, he said, "before the Super Bowl," which will be played on Feb. 7, 2016. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. NFL draft will return to Chicago in 2016, league set to announce (Shutdown Corner)

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Chicago mayor Rahm Emmanuel will announce Tuesday at the NFL owners meeting that the 2016 NFL draft is returning to Chicago, a league source told Shutdown Corner. Chicago hosted the 2015 NFL draft — the first time the Windy City had held the event in 50 years. It was considered a success because of the way the city rolled out the proverbial red carpet for the league and the results were mostly positive after New York had held the draft the previous half-century. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] TV ratings were down for the 2015 event, but the "Draft Town" held across from the Auditorium Theatre in Grant Park was considered a huge success by league officials and most likely will be a centerpiece of the 2016 event, too. There had been widespread speculation that Los Angeles might host the 2016 draft as a way to showcase the city for a team (or teams) possibly relocating there next season. But with the L.A. possibility still in doubt, Chicago made sense as a sure-thing location to host the three-day event. The owners from the 32 member clubs are meeting Tuesday to discuss the future of the league in L.A., with presentations from the St. Louis Rams, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders on their current stadium situations, plus updates from the prospective Carson and Inglewood stadium proposals for relocation. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Chargers slam San Diego's latest stadium proposal (The Associated Press)

The Chargers have issued a stinging rebuke to the city and county's plans for a new $1.1 billion stadium, making it look increasingly doubtful the long-running, contentious issue can be solved by City Hall's Sept. 11 deadline to have a deal in place to qualify for a January vote. The Shutdown Corner 2015 pre-preseason power rankings (Shutdown Corner)

The problem with doing one preview per day, counting down the initial power rankings for the 2015 season, is that 32 days is an eternity in the NFL. Just about every team has had something happen that could change their season outlook, good or bad, and some have had huge changes. The New Orleans Saints cut Junior Galette and his 22 sacks the past two years, and he was signed by Washington. The San Francisco 49ers lost yet another player, former All-Pro Aldon Smith, after cutting him following another arrest. The Chiefs had very valuable nose tackle Dontari Poe undergo back surgery . The Houston Texans lost running back Arian Foster to injury , and everyone is still unsure for how long. And yes, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will officially be suspended four games , unless the lawsuits lead to a different outcome.  But for now we're sticking with the same power rankings we created more than a month ago. When the rankings return before Week 1 they'll look at a lot different. There will be more news, a full schedule of preseason games to analyze and many other potential factors that might push a team up or down. That's what makes August so interesting around the NFL. But here's where we stand heading into the start of the preseason with Sunday night's Hall of Fame Game. Click any team name below to read their full 2015 season preview from Shutdown Corner: 32. Tennessee Titans A lot has been made of Marcus Mariota not throwing any training camp interceptions. Couldn't that just be a reflection of that Titans secondary? 31. Jacksonville Jaguars Early reviews on T.J. Yeldon have been good . Not sure how good he can be if the line isn't better, but it would help Blake Bortles a lot if he's an instant star.

Eight inducted into American Football Hall of Fame (AFP)

Depression in the wake of severe head injuries played its role in the induction ceremonies at the American Football Hall of Fame, where eight legends of the game were enshrined. The late Junior Seau, a former San Diego Chargers star elected in his first season of eligibility, and defensive end Charles Haley, who waited until his sixth, were inducted after stellar careers but major health issues as well. After battling depression and behavioral changes, Seau died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest in 2012 at the age of 43.

NFL-National Football League roundup (Reuters)

Roger Goodell might have his differences with Tom Brady because of the Deflategate scandal, but the NFL commissioner still respects the New England Patriots quarterback. On July 28, Goodell upheld a four-game suspension for Brady's alleged role in using underinflated footballs during the AFC Championship Game in January. "Listen, he's a great player and he's a great young man," Goodell told the Canton Repository newspaper during an interview Friday inside the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Hall of Fame banner shows Junior Seau in Patriots (not Chargers) jersey (Shutdown Corner)

There is a new chapter of awkwardness with Junior Seau's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. After the strange rejection of Sydney Seau, Junior's daughter, not being able to speak in her late father's place at Saturday's induction ceremony (things have been worked out amicably enough now), there comes another difficult sight for San Diego Chargers fans. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] Seau was displayed at the Hall on a banner with him in a New England Patriots jersey. The HOF banner at Canton features one of the greatest Chargers of all time, Junior Seau, in a Patriots jersey. Ugh http://pic.twitter.com/63hLQYkQX7 — Marty Caswell (@MartyCaswell) August 6, 2015 This has Chargers fans quite upset, as the All Pro linebacker spent his first 13 seasons of his 20-year career in San Diego before finishing with three years with the Miami Dolphins and his final four with the Patriots. Poor Chargers. Seau's glory days were with the Chargers, even if he did play a key role with the 18-1 Patriots in 2007. As the San Diego Union-Tribune's Tom Krasovich points out, Seau's 12 Pro Bowl berths all came with the Chargers, as did each of his six first-team, All-Pro selections, and was inducted into the Chargers' Ring of Honor four months after his death as one of the franchise's most beloved players. As if the Patriots hadn't hurt the Chargers enough. First there was the Chargers' brutal defeat at home in the 2006 playoffs when they looked unbeatable, and that was followed by the Chargers' loss in the AFC championship game — with Seau in a Patriots uniform for both games — in Foxborough. Now this.  Granted, Seau is universally recognized first as a Charger, and this too shall pass. But it's a rough reminder for his San Diego fans in what is supposed to be his career-crowning weekend in Canton. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Still young himself, Chiefs' Kelce forced to be mentor (The Associated Press)

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is already getting the hang of being a veteran. Never mind that he is only entering his third season in the NFL, and that Kelce missed most of his first season due to injury. When practice had ended earlier this week, James O'Shaughnessy dutifully picked up Kelce's shoulder pads and helmet and trudged toward the locker room.

Hey Buddy: Seau fondly recalled as he goes into Hall of Fame (The Associated Press)

Junior Seau was many things to many people. ''I played around a lot of great players but none like Junior Seau,'' said former safety Rodney Harrison, who was teammates with Seau with San Diego and New England. Sadly, Seau's death hangs over the memories of the many big moments he had in his 20-year career with San Diego, Miami and New England.

NFL-National Football League roundup (Reuters)

The NFL Players Association released the transcript of Tom Brady's testimony in his June arbitration hearing regarding his alleged role in the deflated footballs controversy. Brady was suspended for four games by the NFL for his role in tampering with footballs which were under-inflated in the AFC Championship Game. Judge: St. Louis residents don't need vote on stadium funds (The Associated Press)

The effort to build a new riverfront football stadium in St. Louis got a big boost Monday when a judge ruled that approval from city voters is not necessary to use city tax money for the project. St. Louis Circuit Judge Tomas Frawley's ruling voided a city ordinance requiring voter approval for any project using tax dollars for a professional sports facility. The ruling is a win for supporters of a stadium proposal that's part of an effort to either keep the Rams in St. Louis or lure another team.

Shutdown Countdown: Broncos a contender, and not because of offense (Shutdown Corner)

Shutdown Corner is previewing all 32 teams as we get ready for the NFL season, counting down the teams one per day in reverse order of our initial 2015 power rankings. No. 1 will be revealed on Aug. 8, the day before the preseason begins with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton. NO. 6: DENVER BRONCOS When you have a quarterback like Peyton Manning, everything else is just the previews before the movie starts. The story lines around the Denver Broncos all revolve around Manning's fade last season, if this is his last year and how he fits in Gary Kubiak's run-centric offense. Other questions on the first couple days of Broncos camp seemed like an intrusion. (When I visited Broncos camp, I wrote about Manning and the offense too, here and here .)

Did Eric Weddle just hint that he's ready to leave the Chargers? (Shutdown Corner)

The San Diego Chargers have been given a soft deadline of the next 10-14 days to sign quarterback Philip Rivers to a contract extension, and yet Rivers is hardly the only Chargers free-agent-to-be of note in 2016. Tight end Antonio Gates and safety Eric Weddle also are set to enter the final years of their respective contracts, and with the state of the franchise — this whole L.A. business and all that — up in the air, it's not clear if there's room for all of them to return. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] Weddle seems to have realized this, and he's talking like a man who might already have come to the mental grips of playing for a new team in 2016. In an interview with NFL Network, Weddle made it sound like he might have packed a bag or two — and not just for training camp.  "I enjoy the game, I love this game," he said. "But when you look around, I do look at this differently, this being my last year. Just making the moment, enjoying the nights we have when we're talking and visiting. Those guys and I will be friends for ever, it just might be the last year we're playing together." Is it the most damning thing ever said by a free agent looking to cash in? No. But when you consider it was the second time he had mentioned it, Weddle is not-so-subtly letting Chargers officials know that he probably isn't taking some hometown discount just for the sake of retaining his beachfront property (if he indeed owns a beachfront property — we have no idea). This is what he said earlier about how he's approaching this season with his contract buddies on the team as they enter No Man's Land. "We're definitely taking every moment together, relishing the moments we have and the time we have, and most likely it will be the last year for us, for a lot of us, and we'll move on to other teams," Weddle said. The Chargers have six players set to hit for more than $5 million against the cap next season — not an alarming number, but there are a few players' deals (such as those of Donald Butler, Brandon Flowers, Orlando Franklin and Melvin Ingram) that are far from set in stone right now. If the Chargers sign Rivers soon, they still can franchise Weddle next year, but it likely will cost them a one-year tender somewhere in the range of $9 million. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Aug 1 (The Sports Xchange) - Denver Broncos wide receiver Kyle Williams suffered a season-ending Achilles injury at training camp practice Saturday.
