National Football League roundup (Reuters)

(The Sports Xchange) - San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Ray McDonald was arrested and charged with felony domestic violence early Sunday morning. The Sacramento Bee reported that McDonald was booked by San Jose police at 5:30 a.m. Sunday for "inflicting injury on a spouse or cohabitant". He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 15, the day after the 49ers play a Sunday Night Football game against the Chicago Bears in Santa Clara. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced last week that the new punishment for those involved in domestic violence disputes would be six weeks for first-time offenders and a second offense would carry a lifetime ban.

Would-be Rams starter happy as Chargers' backup QB (The SportsXchange)

Now that the St. Louis Rams lost starting quarterback Sam Bradford to another knee injury, they might be regretting the day they let go of Kellen Clemens. Clemens landed in San Diego and couldn't be happier, or so he says, despite the fact he might otherwise now be a starter in St. Louis. "It's a good group of guys," he said of the Chargers. The Chargers get back to work Monday after taking Saturday and Sunday off.

Dolphins add 2 players, tweaking 53-man roster (The Associated Press)

Going with undrafted players is clearly not too risky for the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins have added two more players who never got drafted, making moves Sunday to sign safety Brandian Ross and cornerback Sammy Seamster off waivers. He spent 2011 on Green Bay's practice squad as an undrafted free agent from Youngstown State. Seamster, an undrafted rookie out of Middle Tennessee State, was waived Saturday by Baltimore.

Saints can't kick after cutdown to 53 (The SportsXchange)

Even though New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton set his 53-man active roster on Saturday afternoon, it was far from a finished product. The main reason: Payton, who usually tinkers with his roster after the final 53 names are submitted to the league, cut both of the kickers who waged a duel throughout the spring and summer -- veteran Shayne Graham and Derek Dimke. That could be starting fullback Erik Lorig, who has not practiced since suffering an undisclosed injury in the Black and Gold Scrimmage back on Aug. 2. While having no kicker on the 53-man roster was a surprise, the biggest name among the 22 roster moves the Saints made Saturday was future Hall of Fame cornerback Champ Bailey.

Tough call but Giants stick with FB Hynoski (The SportsXchange)

The New York Giants fullback competition might not have been the team's most glamorous, but it was certainly one of the closest, according to head coach Tom Coughlin. That's because in Henry Hynoski and John Conner, New York had two very capable lead blockers, both of whom have proven to be a backbone in the Giants' rushing game. "Two very good players," Coughlin said. In the end, however, the team went with Hynoski, the starter every season since 2011.

NFL Cuts Roundup: Saints release 12-time Pro Bowler Champ Bailey (Shutdown Corner)

The biggest story among the NFL cuts on Saturday was the Rams releasing defensive end Michael Sam . The biggest name among the cuts, from a football standpoint, was cornerback Champ Bailey. Going to New Orleans was supposed to be the last chapter in Bailey’s great career. He never got to write a page in that chapter. The Saints decided to eat the $500,000 signing bonus they invested in Bailey this offseason and cut the longtime Broncos and Redskins defensive back. Bailey is a 12-time Pro Bowler, but has clearly lost a step at age 36. He struggled for the Broncos in last season’s Super Bowl loss to Seattle. He played in just five games last season because of injuries. There are a lot of teams in the NFL who could use help at cornerback, but it will be interesting to see if any take a shot on Bailey, a likely Hall of Famer. Here were the rest of the biggest stories from around the league as teams cut their rosters down to 53 players: Jets: The Jets admitted a massive mistake in their final cuts, dumping receiver Stephen Hill, the 43rd pick of the draft two years ago. Hill looked the part, at 6-4, 215 pounds, but had just 45 catches for 594 yards and four touchdowns in two years. Receiver Alshon Jeffery, selected two picks later, has become a star with the Bears. NFC Battles of Week: Final chance for lasting impression (The SportsXchange)

While some NFL players may be on cruise control to stay healthy in this final week of preseason, others are going full throttle to nail down a better spot on the depth chart or just to keep their name on the active roster. With the so-called final cut to 53 active players set for Saturday, 1 p.m. Eastern Time, these next few days, including Thursday's final preseason games, are crucial to the careers of several players on each team. In the NFC, some of the stronger teams are looking to firm up depth, such as Super Bowl champion Seattle at backup wide receiver and the San Francisco 49ers at No. 3 running back. Others teams are still trying to solidify their starting lineup, especially the New York Giants, Arizona Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys -- all are still sorting through options on the offensive line.

Linebacker James Harrison visiting Arizona Cardinals, per reports (Shutdown Corner)

The Arizona Cardinals might be hoping to strike veteran defensive gold one more time. The team is bringing in free-agent linebacker James Harrison for a visit, per multiple reports. James Harrison is on his way to visit the Arizona Cardinals today, according to a league source — Aaron Wilson (@RavensInsider) August 27, 2014 [ Smack talk season is back at Yahoo Sports: Sign up and play free Fantasy Football! ] Harrison, 36, received little interest on the free-agent market after being released in March by the Cincinnati Bengals, for whom he started 10 games (out of 15 played) last season. He was not effective as a pass rusher last season, notching only two sacks, and never really making an impact. But the Cardinals have need at linebacker, both inside and out. Daryl Washington is supended for the season, Karlos Dansby left to sign with the Cleveland Browns in the offseason and John Abraham is playing his way back into shape after rejoining the team late following a DUI this offseason. Coordinator Todd Bowles' defense as a whole could use some help, too. Defensive end Darnell Dockett just went down for the season, and defensive back Tyrann Mathieu is in danger of missing the Week 1 game against the San Diego Chargers if he does not play in the preseason finale on Thursday. The Cardinals tried to bring in former Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel to help replace Dockett, but Keisel reneged on a free-agent visit and signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's interesting to note that the Steelers also showed some lukewarm interest in Harrison possibly returning to town this offseason, but that hasn't materialized. The Cardinals have found some veterans to help them out after others have passed on them, such as Dansby and Abraham ... could Harrison be the next in that line? The ornery Harrison could be brought in as a tone-setter on defense, but his play has dropped off precipitously the past few seasons. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Chargers gain bolt of momentum from solid effort vs. 49ers (The SportsXchange)

Two memories from the San Diego Chargers' preseason trip to the San Francisco Bay Area: a 6.0 earthquake which awoke the players Sunday morning and a blast of air coming from Levi's Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers exhaled on Sunday, after playing well in a 21-7 loss to the 49ers. Entering the 49ers game, the Chargers were bewildered. They had their doors blown off in Seattle, by a Seahawks team which seems hell-bent on destroying everyone this summer.

San Francisco's No. 1 offense still looks shaky two weeks from the regular season, and the 49ers did just enough for their first preseason victory in a 21-7 win against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. Phil Dawson kicked a 39-yard field goal at the 9:27 mark of the second quarter, ending an eight-quarter scoreless drought for the 49ers as they doubled their preseason total. Backup Blaine Gabbert threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Vance McDonald late in the first half for the 49ers' first TD of the preseason. 49ers' Kaepernick: OL needs to be more aggressive (The SportsXchange)

Based on the account of a quick halftime exchange with FOX sideline reporter Erin Andrews, more is coming apart for the San Francisco 49ers than the seams of Levi's stadium's sod. Coach Jim Harbaugh avoided a halftime interview on FOX TV, suggesting Andrews talk to Colin Kaepernick, who apparently obliged by complaining about the performance of the offensive line. The 49ers were leading the San Diego Chargers at the half 10-7, but Kaepernick was not impressive as he completed 6 of 12 passes for 59 yards and still had not accounted for a touchdown in the preseason, although his fourth and final drive ended with a field goal. Backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert drove the 49ers to their first touchdown of the preseason, a 6-yard pass to Vance McDonald with 46 seconds left in the half.

Winless 49ers look to rebound at Levi's Stadium (The Associated Press)

The winless San Francisco 49ers are counting on a far more memorable day of football on their home field to take some focus off the condition of that very field. San Francisco's Levi's Stadium debut quickly became a debacle last Sunday, from missed chances, miscues and sod that showed in a hurry it is still finding its own solid ground in the new $1.2 billion venue. ''I can speak for the team when I say we didn't play very well.'' The 49ers were blanked 34-0 to be exact, committing four turnovers and watching typically spot-on placekicker Phil Dawson sail two field-goal tries wide right. Jim Harbaugh's team is eager to have some success in its second straight home game on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers.

49ers tear up Levi's Stadium turf just days before preseason game (NBC on Yahoo Sports)

After just three events, including one NFL game on sod that was installed in mid-April at $1.2 billion Levi’s Stadium, the field is undergoing some major repair. Coach Jim Harbaugh abruptly halted practice Wednesday at the 49ers’ new stadium in front of thousands of fans and took his team off the field due to safety concerns from poor field conditions. On Thursday morning, the stadium’s the heavy-traffic area of grass, stretching several yards beyond the hashmarks, was torn up from goal line to goal line. The 49ers plan is to re-sod the field so it can provide solid enough footing for Sunday’s exhibition game against the San Diego Chargers. Several players lost their footing and large divots were created on seemingly every play. There were small patches of replacement sod that were discolored and looked uneven. Finally, when wide receiver Stevie Johnson hit the ground hard after slipping on a routine out-route, Harbaugh stopped practice. On Wednesday, the 49ers issued a statement, which stated the organization “determined the appropriate measures necessary to have the field ready for Sunday and look forward to hosting the San Diego Chargers.” Team officials did not elaborate on what was planned, but images from a news helicopter flying over Levi’s Stadium early Thursday morning provided the answer. The Levi’s Stadium sod, known as Bandera Bermuda, was selected for its ability to hold up under frequent usage, the team announced at the time of its installation. But after just one small concert event, a soccer match and an NFL game, the turf was considered unsafe for the 49ers on Wednesday to conduct a practice. The sod was installed in mid-April. The field is scheduled to host a packed schedule of events leading up to the 49ers’ regular-season opener Sept. 14 against the Chicago Bears. On Aug. 29, two high school football games are scheduled for Levi’s Stadium. And on Sept. 6, Mexico and Chile are set to have an international soccer match on the field. How the field holds up Sunday could determine whether alternate plans are made for those events. It is not uncommon for entire football fields to be replaced on short notice. In January, the BCS Championship Game took place on an entirely new natural grass field in Pasadena just five days after the Rose Bowl was played. -- Matt Maiocco, CSNBayArea.com

Loose sod at new Levi's Stadium being removed (The Associated Press)

The San Francisco 49ers were working to re-sod the field at new Levi's Stadium on Thursday, a day after a public workout was cut short and moved to the regular practice fields because players were slipping. San Francisco hosts the San Diego Chargers at the $1.2 million stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. PDT, and the team has said it expects to have the field ready in time. Coach Jim Harbaugh moved his team out of the stadium Wednesday about an hour into the practice. The field looked dry in places and chunks of sod could be seen missing in places where it apparently didn't root properly.

Levi's Stadium turf being torn out after safety issues at 49ers practice (Shutdown Corner)

Levi's Stadium, the brand-new home of the San Francisco 49ers, might be one of the more fan-friendly spots in the NFL , but that kind of gets overshadowed if the turf is unusable for playing football. The 49ers cut short their practice on Wednesday, attended by thousands of fans, because of safety concerns over the turf. According to CSN Bay Area , large divots in the turf kept coming up during practice, including when receiver Stevie Johnson fell hard on a normal out route. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] According to CSN Bay Area, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh took his team off the Levi's Stadium field after Johnson's fall and the players finished practice at the team facility, which is right next to the stadium. Harbaugh took his team off the torn-up field less than an hour into practice. “The 49ers organization would like to apologize to any fans who were inconvenienced by today’s practice ending early," the team said in a statement. "We have determined the appropriate measures necessary to have the field ready for Sunday and look forward to hosting the San Diego Chargers.” A helicopter news crew found that the 49ers were already in the process of tearing out a large stretch of the turf, and will replace it before Sunday's game: Again, if you're going to spend more than $1 billion on a new stadium, it's fantastic if the Wi-Fi works well but the turf needs to hold up longer than just one preseason game. The 49ers and Broncos played the first NFL game on the field last Sunday. The 49ers had a couple of practices on the field before Wednesday, there was a soccer match on the field and a concert too. That shouldn't wear out a turf, although there are challenges with sodding a brand new field. CSN Bay Area said the turf was discolored in patches from Sunday's game, and it hadn't taken root yet. The turf was a Bermuda Bandera grass, which the team said required 50 percent less water than the average turf in the Bay Area. That's very eco-friendly, but it didn't hold up to much wear and tear. As CSN Bay Area points out, Levi's Stadium is set to host Sunday's preseason game against the Chargers, two high-school games on Aug. 29 and an international soccer match on Sept. 6. We'll see how the turf holds up through that. The 49ers' home regular-season opener is Sept. 14. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? 49ers stop practice due to unplayable field (The SportsXchange)

Danger was lurking in the opinion of head coach Jim Harbaugh, who stopped practice Wednesday night at Levi's Stadium because of an unplayable field. Visible divots and chunks of sod, remnants of Sunday's stadium-opening game in Santa Clara, Calif., against the Denver Broncos caused several players to slip, trip and hit the deck. Harbaugh stopped practice, and the 49ers sent home hoards of fans who'd come to the brand new stadium to see the team's final practice at the $1.3 billion facility. "The 49ers organization would like to apologize to any fans who were inconvenienced by today's practice ending early," team spokesman Bob Lange said in a statement.

First-year head coach Mike Pettine said Tuesday he needed more time to evaluate the competition between Hoyer, who started both of the Browns' preseason games, and rookie first-round pick Johnny Manziel. While Hoyer has only four career starts -- and went 3-0 with the Browns before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in 2013 -- his biggest advantages were experience and leadership. Manziel, drafted 22nd overall in May, played only two seasons at Texas A&M in an offense designed to win at that level.

Colts' defensive plan finally taking shape (The Associated Press)

Coach Chuck Pagano spent the past two seasons changing the Colts' defensive philosophy. We're getting closer.'' In about 2 1/2 quarters, the Colts have allowed just 91 total yards and no touchdowns. Indy (0-2) has figured out how to pressure quarterbacks despite playing without reigning NFL sacks champion Robert Mathis, who will miss the first four games of the regular season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. While the doubters rightfully point out the measuring stick so far has been two preseason games against teams that aren't exactly offensive juggernauts, Mathis, the longest-tenured Colts defender, likes what he's seen.

Vegas: Broncos, Patriots most likely to make playoffs; Raiders, Jaguars least (Shutdown Corner)

Bovada has come out with its updated odds for NFL teams making the playoffs, and there are some familiar faces at the top of the list — and the bottom. Their two lowest-odds favorites to make the postseason in 2014 are the two teams that met in the 2013 AFC championship game: the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots. Both teams have the same odds — they are minus-500 (bet $500 to win $100) on the money line and are set at 1:5 odds. And why not? Both teams have Super Bowl-caliber quarterbacks in Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, respectively, and defenses that improved their personnel in the offseason. Seems like easy money, albeit at steep odds. [ Smack talk season is back at Yahoo Sports: Sign up and play free Fantasy Football! ] (Just so we're clear, this is Monopoly money, right? The Shutdown Corner does not endorse real betting with actual legal tender. Nope. Not at all, not one bit.) And just below that pair are the two teams that were on the other side of the ledger, division foes and 2013 NFC championship combatants the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers. The champion Seahawks are at minus-325 on the money line with 4:13 odds, and the 49ers — with the same odds numbers as the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts — are at minus-220 and 5:11. The other two teams with negative money lines and odds below 1:1 to make the playoffs are the New Orleans Saints (minus-200, 1:2) and the Philadelphia Eagles (minus-150, 2:3). (If you're, you know, interested in our free advice and whatnot, the San Diego Chargers at plus-180 and 9:5 certainly don't look too shabby. Neither do the New York Giants at plus-200 and 2:1. Again, if you're just like asking our opinion and aren't seeking any actual, um, wagering advice.) On the low end, Bovada really doesn't care for the chances of either the Jacksonville Jaguars or the Oakland Raiders to make the playoffs. If you're a huge Gus Bradley fan, your $100 bet would win you $800 if the Jags shocked the NFL and made the dance. And likewise, if Matt Schaub tickles your fancy, you can score a cool $700 on that $100 wager if the Raiders get into the tournament. (You also, of course, can bet on who won't make the postseason. For that side of the coin, may we suggest the Dallas Cowboys at minus-300 and 1:3?) - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Cardinals DB Mathieu returns to practice (The SportsXchange)

Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu was activated from the physically unable to perform list Tuesday, returning from multiple knee ligament tears incurred in December. Mathieu overtook Rashad Johnson at safety and was a key contributor as the nickel defensive back even before that. Mathieu declared himself ready in July, but head coach Bruce Arians said the team would take it very slow and follow a conservative plan in bringing him back to the practice field. The Cardinals might choose to hold Mathieu out of the regular-season opener Sept. 8 against the San Diego Chargers.

Bengals' Dalton shows he can be great -- in preseason (The SportsXchange)

Quarterback Andy Dalton arrived at the Cincinnati Bengals' postgame press conference with his bright red hair slightly tousled and a smile permanently affixed to his face. Dalton's summer of fun, which included the birth of his first child on July 1 and the signing of a six-year, $115 million contract extension Aug. 4, rolled on Saturday night when he pitched a perfect game against the New York Jets. Making his first appearance at Paul Brown Stadium since a three-interception performance in a 27-10 wild-card playoff loss to the San Diego Chargers in January, Dalton completed all eight of his passes for 144 yards and a touchdown. Maybe the most telling stat of all was 10, which was the number of times Dalton used the "fun" during the 14-question press conference.

The San Diego Chargers look forward to next week's third preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers in a visit to the new Levi's Stadium. While it was just a preseason game, more than a few eyebrows were raised in the aftermath of Friday's 41-14 shellacking in Seattle. In particular the defense got pushed around, which the team is hoping is more indicative of the powerful Seahawks' attack rather than the Chargers' shortcomings. It is noted that outside linebacker Jarret Johnson and Dwight Freeney were idle instead of idling.

Russell Wilson's first appearance at home since hoisting the Lombardi Trophy looked very similar to Seattle's Super Bowl domination even in a limited performance. Wilson threw for 121 yards and ran for two touchdowns, leading Seattle to scores on all four of his possessions and the Seahawks beat the San Diego Chargers 41-14 on Friday night. He threw sharp passes to open receivers and he operated Seattle's offense with an efficiency missing in its preseason opener at Denver.
