NFL roundup: Apologetic Rice calls actions 'inexcusable' (The SportsXchange)

A contrite Ray Rice apologized publicly to his wife, his 2-year-old daughter, his mother and children wearing No. 27 Baltimore Ravens jerseys in his first public comments since the NFL suspended him two games for a domestic violence incident in February. "My actions that night were totally inexcusable," Rice said Thursday. Rice said the most difficult punishment he'll deal with is knowing daughter, Rayven, will first hear not of his football achievements but what happened with his then-fiancee Janay Palmer at an Atlantic City casino. ---Running back David Wilson's future with the New York Giants and in football is in doubt.

Derrick Brooks set standard for NFL linebackers (The Associated Press)

Eighteen years later and now headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Derrick Brooks laughs at the memory of sitting in a hotel room the morning of a game early in his career. He was turning on a TV and being riled by a national commentator who not only forecast another loss for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but jokingly referred to the struggling team as the ''Yucks.'' The young, undersized linebacker who would go on to become the heartbeat of a Super Bowl champion turned to roommate Warren Sapp, another second-year pro embracing the challenge of transforming one of the worst franchises in pro sports history into a title contender, and the two of them locked angry eyes. Along with hard-hitting safety John Lynch, they formed the cornerstone of a dominant defense that keyed a Super Bowl run in 2002 and ranked among the best in the NFL for more than a decade. He had his quiet way of challenging us,'' the 2002 NFL defensive player of the year added.

Panthers striving to be NFL's No. 1 defense (The Associated Press)

The Carolina Panthers defense is looking to take one more step in 2014. Luke Kuechly said even though the Panthers were No. 2 in the NFL in defense last season he sees plenty of room for improvement. Kuechly, the team's middle linebacker and last year's AP Defensive Player of the Year, points to early season losses to Seattle and Buffalo in which Carolina gave up late touchdowns. Only the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks allowed fewer yards and fewer points last season than the Panthers.

Brandon Flowers enjoying fresh start with Chargers (The Associated Press)

Chargers cornerback Brandon Flowers got beat on a play by wide receiver Malcom Floyd earlier this week in practice. ''Each person is going to have his day,'' Flowers said. ''Offensive-wise, defensive-wise, it's just about competing every day.'' Among the reasons Flowers signed as a free agent with San Diego was its potential to win. After being with the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West for six years, Flowers was familiar with the Chargers.

Chiefs safety Berry leaves practice with injury (The Associated Press)

Eric Berry left Chiefs practice on Thursday after hurting his right ankle, the second injury that the Pro Bowl safety has sustained so far in training camp. It was unclear what happened to Berry during one of the early sessions of the day's workout at Missouri Western. ''We'll have to see.'' Starting cornerback Marcus Cooper also left practice Thursday with a slight hamstring injury, compounding problems for a Chiefs secondary that was already thin coming into camp. The Chiefs allowed free safety Kendrick Lewis to depart in free agency, and released Pro Bowl cornerback Brandon Flowers in what amounted to a cost-saving move.

Romo might miss preseason opener (The SportsXchange)

As Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tomy Romo recovers from back surgery, he is taking a measured approach to returning to game action. Romo indicated Wednesday that he might not play in the Cowboys' Aug. 7 preseason opener against the San Diego Chargers, but he expects to see some action in exhibition games as he prepares for the regular-season opener on Sept. 7 against the San Francisco 49ers. "You're constantly evaluating it and you're constantly, I don't want to say adjusting because you stick to the plan, but it's a progression," Romo said at the Cowboys' training camp in Thousand Oaks, Calif. "It's leading up to San Francisco. Romo practiced Wednesday and expects to be back on the field Thursday.

With big raise, Rudolph ready for bigger year (The Associated Press)

The Minnesota Vikings have pledged to make Kyle Rudolph a larger part of their offense for, well, his whole career. ''It's an honor to know that they have the faith in me and the trust in me to instill that value in me, and I'm going to do everything I can to go out on the field and perform at that level,'' Rudolph said between practices on Monday, after signing a five-year contract extension the night before. He added: ''I want to be the best tight end in the NFL, and that's why I go out every day to work the way that I do.'' The Vikings were enamored enough with the soft-handed, slender Rudolph that they drafted him out of Notre Dame in the second round in 2011 despite a nasty injury, a torn right hamstring, that he was still recovering from at the time. Rudolph won the Most Valuable Player award at the Pro Bowl after the 2012 season, but he has accumulated a modest 1,055 yards and 15 touchdowns over three years in the NFL.

Rudolph signed a five-year contract extension with the Vikings on Sunday night, a sign that the team has big plans for Rudolph in new offensive coordinator Norv Turner's offense. Ellington was selected by the 49ers in the fourth round of the NFL Draft in May. The 22-year-old played in 38 games in three years at South Carolina and finished his college career with 106 catches for 1,586 yards and 16 touchdowns. Battered Bengals rejoin team in practice (The SportsXchange)

Three Cincinnati Bengals who sustained devastating season-ending injuries in 2013 were back on the field for the first practice of training camp Thursday, and a fourth may not be too far behind. Punter Kevin Huber's return from a broken jaw and fractured vertebrae -- the result of a vicious, illegal hit by the Pittsburgh Steelers' Terence Gavin in Week 16 -- was expected, and cornerback Leon Hall's recovery from a second torn Achilles' tendon in three years was predicted. But Clint Boling surprised everyone when he lined up at left guard for the first snap of 11-on-11 drills less than seven months after surgery to repair an ACL tear he sustained in his right knee Dec. 1 at the San Diego Chargers. "That was always the goal I had in the back of my head, to be ready for the start of training camp," said Boling, who has played in 33 games with 31 starts in three seasons in Cincinnati.

He was limited to nine games last year, including five starts in place of Dwight Freeney, because of a pectoral injury he had after sacking Peyton Manning in a loss to Denver. Outside linebacker Larry English was released by the San Diego Chargers ahead of the team opening training camp on Wednesday. A former first-round pick in 2009, English's development was hampered by multiple injuries through his first five NFL seasons as he has played in only 52 games while producing 82 tackles and 11 sacks. While former general manager A.J. Smith stuck by English, new GM Tom Telesco and coach Mike McCoy did not see enough last season and over the offseason to convince them to bring English to training camp this year. The Chargers are excited about the potential of Melvin Ingram, and added Jeremiah Attaochu during the second round of May's draft.

NFL Camp Preview: Locker gets one more chance with Titans (The SportsXchange)

After spending OTAs and mini-camps installing and refining their new offensive and defensive systems, the Tennessee Titans hope to hit the ground running in their first training camp practice on July 26. New coach Ken Whisenhunt has been busy installing a more up-tempo, pass-friendly offense that might finally bring the Titans into the 21st century on that side of the football, after years of a plodding ground attack run by both Jeff Fisher and Mike Munchak. Quarterback Jake Locker hopes this will help pump some needed life into a career that has been pock-marked by debilitating injuries since becoming a starter in 2012. While the Titans are giving the 2011 first-round pick one more chance to stay healthy and deliver, they have hedged their bet by declining his fifth-year rookie option and also drafting strong-armed former LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger as insurance beyond this season.
