Clippers sale of little consequence to NFL (The SportsXchange)

In the overspray of that splashy $2 billion offer by former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to buy the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers, some NFL media is knee-jerking projections that the long-sought NFL franchise in Los Angeles suddenly is soaring in value. Putting aside how preposterous Ballmer's expenditure is for an NBA club sans arena, the deal should not increase NFL franchise values by a single penny. That might impact the value of NFL franchises even more than Ballmer's mind-boggling extravagance. Two years ago, Jimmy Haslam bought the Cleveland Browns for $1.05 billion.

Former NFL receiver Reche Caldwell arrested again, this time for allegedly selling Ecstasy (Shutdown Corner)

Reche Caldwell has gone from an NFL career to a life of crime. Caldwell was arrested Tuesday in Tampa and accused of selling the drug Ecstasy, according to TBO.com. He was released from jail on Wednesday after posting a $2,000 bond. Caldwell faces one felony charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, according to jail records. This is Caldwell’s second arrest in the past five months. Caldwell, 35, was arrested in January for allegedly running an illegal gambling operation in Tampa with two other men. According to jail records, Caldwell has been arrested four times in Tampa since 2009. Prior to Caldwell’s criminal problems, he was standout receiver at the University of Florida, and eventually became a second-round pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2002. Caldwell was an underachiever throughout his career, but he had 760 receiving yards and four touchdowns with the Patriots in 2006. He spent the 2007 season with the Washington Redskins before his career ended. Broncos receiver Andre Caldwell is Reche’s younger brother. Andre Caldwell signed a two-year deal worth up to $3.45 million with the Broncos this offseason. He is expected to move up Denver’s depth chart after Eric Decker’s signing with the New York Jets during free agency. - - - - - - - Anwar S Richardson is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. AFC undrafted rookies to watch (The SportsXchange)

Once all 256 picks are submitted, the 2014 NFL draft was complete. But that's when the real fun begins as teams recruit undrafted players and entice them with free agent contracts and a chance to make the roster. For players who aren't drafted in the first few rounds, going undrafted isn't the worst outcome because they likely have more than a few teams jockeying to add them as an undrafted free agent, allowing players to choose the best team for them. Weak spots on the depth chart, familiarity with the coaching staff or simply feeling comfortable in certain situations or schemes are all reasons undrafted players land with different teams to attempt and make their dreams of a NFL career come to fruition.

Chargers move up in 2nd round to take Attaochu (The Associated Press)

The San Diego Chargers have moved up in the second round of the NFL draft to take outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu, Georgia Tech's career sacks leader with 31 1/2. The Chargers traded with Miami to move up seven spots to the 50th pick overall to take Attaochu. Miami got the 57th pick and San Diego's fourth-round pick, which is No. 125 overall. Chargers hope Verrett is cover corner they need (The SportsXchange)

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Chargers had many needs. Texas Christian cornerback Jason Verrett was the Chargers' top selection in the first round of the draft Thursday, as they got busy shoring up a shoddy pass defense. \"The things we wanted to add to this team were speed and playmakers and to help the defense,\" general manager Tom Telesco said. What Verrett isn't is big.

Titans take OT Taylor Lewan with No. 11 pick (The Associated Press)

With pass rushers like Jadaveon Clowney and J.J. Watt in the AFC South, the Tennessee Titans continue to make moves in an effort to protect their quarterback. The Titans selected offensive tackle Taylor Lewan of Michigan at No. 11 overall Thursday night in the NFL draft, taking an offensive lineman with their top pick for a second year in a row. Last year they drafted right guard Chance Warmack and center Brian Schwenke, then signed veteran left guard Andy Levitre and revamped the interior of the offensive line. General manager Ruston Webster said he learned an important lesson when working in Seattle.

Bolts boss Telesco will try to match his 1st draft (The Associated Press)

Tom Telesco set the bar high during his first draft as general manager of the San Diego Chargers. He took right tackle D.J. Fluker in the first round, traded up in the second round to take linebacker Manti Te'o, and then landed a gem in the third round with wide receiver Keenan Allen, who had a brilliant rookie season. Now Telesco has to try to do it again, starting with the 25th pick overall Thursday night. The Chargers' roster is better than what Telesco inherited in January 2013.

Pick 6: Biggest QB busts of the last 10 years (The Associated Press)

That was the drama at the top of the 1998 NFL draft, with two seemingly elite quarterbacks in play. Two years ago, while Manning was on his way to winning the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year Award with Denver, Leaf was beginning a prison sentence for burglary and drugs. That's the extreme contrast of success and failure at this critical position, of course, but Leaf isn't the only high-profile quarterback whose struggles in the professional game significantly set back the team that drafted him. The worst part for the Raiders, who have yet to find their franchise quarterback, is the list of other players drafted that spring among the top 15 picks: Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas, Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Marshawn Lynch and Darrelle Revis, to name a half-dozen potential Hall of Famers.
