Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice was indicted by a grand jury on a third-degree aggravated assault charge for allegedly striking his fiancee unconscious last month, Atlantic County, N.J., prosecutors announced Thursday. Risky IPO seeks new way to trade star athletes (The Associated Press)

Professional athletes frequently get traded to other teams, but San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis is about to be the first ever to be traded like a stock. Davis, an eight-year veteran of the National Football League, is serving as the litmus test for a risky concept: Whether sports stars should be treated like public companies, whose moneymaking potential can be bought and sold on an exchange by ordinary investors. San Francisco-based Fantex Inc. plans to operate the exchange and will orchestrate Davis' initial public offering of stock after getting regulatory approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission. The deal requires Fantex to pay Davis $4 million in exchange for 10 percent of his future earnings, including some of his off-field income.

Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman has made his philosophy well known by now: construct the foundation through the draft and use free agency to supplement the core of the roster. Coming off of a five-win season and with so many holes to fill, Spielman needed to be a little more aggressive on the open market to take some of the pressure the looming draft. Spielman capped a busy first week of free agency by signing receiver Jerome Simpson and cornerback Derek Cox to one-year deals on Friday, saying he needed to move quickly to shore up the defense and give them some freedom for the May draft. Sproles: Explosive playmaker or aging backup? (Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia)

Finally, the Eagles went out and acquired someone this week who fans actually like. In trading for Darren Sproles, the Eagles added another proven, versatile playmaker to an offense that set records for points and yards last year and scored the NFLs fourth-most points in Chip Kellys first year. Now, with Sproles in the mix, the Eagles have one of the leagues most dynamic return specialists and another pass-catching weapon to keep defenses on their toes. There are reasons to think Sproles is exactly the kind of player who can help the Eagles get over their Super Bowl hump, but also reasons to think this experiment will backfire.

Carolina Panthers trying to trade Steve Smith, could end up releasing him (Shutdown Corner)

It might be the end of an era for the best player in Carolina Panthers history. Shutdown Corner can confirm the report of NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that the Panthers are trying to trade wide receiver Steve Smith, the franchise leader in receiving yards and playoff touchdowns, who has played with the team since it made him a third-round pick in 2001. The #Panthers are attempting to trade WR Steve Smith, per source. Given his $7M cap number and age (34), seems unlikely. — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 10, 2014 [Be sure to check out Shutdown Corner's NFL free-agent rankings. Click here for the list of offensive players , and click here for the list of defensive and special teams players ] Smith is due to make $7 million next season on a contract he signed (under former GM Marty Hurney) believing it would keep him a Panther for life. That isn't likely now. The Panthers likely will release Smith if they can't trade him. Hurney has been replaced by Dave Gettleman, who was wishy washy about Smith's future at the scouting combine, as was head coach Ron Rivera. Smith has said he is not ready to stop playing yet. At 34, Smith is coming off a season in which he caught 64 passes for 745 yards and four touchdowns. For his career, he ranks 25th in NFL history with 836 catches and 19th all-time with 12,197 receiving yards. His entire career has been with the Panthers. The Panthers took down all of Smith's jerseys for sale off their website earlier on Monday. In what might have been his final game as a Panther, Smith returned early from a strained PCL injury a few weeks earlier to score a first-half touchdown and gain 74 yards in a loss to the San Francisco 49ers. If Smith were to be released, keep in mind the San Diego Chargers and New England Patriots as possible landing spots. Smith is close with Chargers head coach Mike McCoy and WR coach Fred Graves, and the Patriots are famous for reviving veterans' careers. Smith also might not pass on the chance to play within the division with a chance at retribution twice per season, if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons or New Orleans Saints came calling. Smith has been upset with the lack of communication between the Panthers' front office and his agent. Smith has not heard what the team's plans for him have been, only getting news of his future through media reports. Although Smith and Gettleman met last week to "clear the air," according to people familiar with the meeting, little was accomplished in that brief session. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Eagles look to improve defense in free agency (The Associated Press)

It was just three years ago when the Philadelphia Eagles were coming off their last division title and decided the best way to make a run at the Super Bowl was to spend freely in free agency. Don't expect these Eagles to throw tons of money at big-name players when the NFL's free agency period opens Tuesday, even though they have about $24 million available under the salary cap. ''When we look at the free agent market and how it is, we try and find the right fits,'' general manager Howie Roseman said in an interview with The Associated Press. ''We don't go into the draft saying: 'We have to.' We say: 'We'd like to but we don't have to.' That's how we view free agency and as we get developed as a program, it gets less and less and you pick your spots.'' The Eagles were the talk of the NFL in the 2011 offseason when they signed former All-Pro cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to a $60 million contract, and added defensive end Jason Babin, defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, quarterback Vince Young and running back Ronnie Brown in the wildest spending spree in team history.

2014 NFL Mock Draft: Manziel still on top? (Comcast SportsNet Houston)

If they stay at the top of the draft, it might just be too hard of a choice to pass up on Johnny Manziel. He had an impressive outing at the combine, and his local roots make him the obvious choice for Houston with the first pick. There's more than a chance they decide to draft Jadeveon Clowney, but after all the rumblings about drafting a top-tier quarterback, it may prove a hard sell a fan base that seems overly enticed at the chance to call Johnny Football a Houston Texan. The combine was cruel to Jake Matthews, he didn't do anything to hurt his stock, and by all accounts should still be one of the top players taken... but man, how great did Greg Robinson look?

Free agency preview: Eric Decker is No. 1 on long list of No. 2 NFL receivers (Shutdown Corner)

NFL free agency will begin on March 11, and many teams will attempt to improve by signing veteran players. The most active teams in free agency are usually those that previously whiffed during the NFL draft, others are simply filling holes, while some squads some squads just want depth. If a team is not willing to enter bidding war during free agency, that squad will shift its attention to the NFL draft. Here is Shutdown Corner’s breakdown of free agent receivers and tight ends: Market Watch Last year, Mike Wallace turned down a $76 million offer from Minnesota and signed with Miami for $60 million. It is hard to imagine NFL teams entering a major bidding war for any of the available receivers in free agency. There are plenty of receivers to choose from, but the majority of them have major question marks, and they are complementary players, not No. 1 starters. Meanwhile, the tight end market is dismal. Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew is the best option, and that needs to be put into perspective. Pettigrew is a former first-round pick who never emerged into an elite NFL tight end. His five-year career has been plagued with drops, and he does not have the pass-catching ability of Jimmy Graham, Rob Gronkowski or even Miami's Charles Clay. Detroit is willing to let Pettigrew test the market, and if he signs with another team, the Lions are ready to replace him with Joseph Fauria, who had seven touchdowns as an undrafted rookie in 2013. Green Bay’s Jermichael Finley is recovering from spinal fusion surgery after he sustained an injury last season. He is a decent option for a desperate team, but never lived up to the hype in Green Bay, and definitely has health concerns. The Houston Texans want to re-sign Garrett Graham, which leaves Dustin Keller (Dolphins), Scott Chandler (Bills), Jeff Cumberland (Jets) and Brandon Myers (Giants) as the best remaining options. That's not too appealing. Top Attraction: Eric Decker, Broncos WR Decker was Denver’s second-leading receiver with 87 receptions, 1,288 yards and 11 touchdowns. His critics will correctly point out Demaryius Thomas was Denver’s leading receiver with 92 receptions, 1,430 yards and 14 touchdowns, and Decker was clearly the second option. Others will say it is easy to have success with Peyton Manning throwing you the ball. However, Decker had eight touchdowns with Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow as his quarterbacks in 2011. That means if Decker has an average quarterback, he should be fine. Decker could land in Indianapolis, Kansas City or New York with the Giants, but teams have to be cautious about spending too much on him. Detroit makes sense too, but Lions general manager Martin Mayhew is usually cautious about overspending in free agency. Buyer Beware: Kenny Britt, Titans WR There was a time with Britt’s future seemed bright. He had 101 receptions, 1,765 yards and 15 touchdowns during his first 31 games. Britt tore his ACL in 2011, and was never the same. He had 11 receptions and 96 yards last season. He is 25 years old, and there might be a team willing to take a risk on Britt. However, Britt will get a short "prove it" deal and have a short leash on his new team. [Be sure to check out Shutdown Corner's NFL free-agent rankings. Click here for the list of offensive players , and click here for the list of defensive and special teams players ] Frugal Addition: Dexter McCluster, Chiefs WR McCluster had 1,500 receiving yards and five touchdowns, 662 rushing yards and six touchdowns, plus returned three punts for touchdowns during his four years in Kansas City. He is about to enter the prime of his career. McCluster is just 5-foot-8 and 170 pounds, but he has missed only one game over the past three seasons. Even if he is not a full-time player, McCluster’s versatility should be a valuable commodity for a team that needs offensive playmakers, such as the Cardinals, Falcons, Panthers, Bears, Browns or Raiders. The Buzz San Diego Chargers receiver Danario Alexander reportedly has undergone multiple surgeries on his right knee since a second reconstruction of his ACL last year. Alexander’s setback may prevent him from playing in 2014. He would have been an intriguing option for a team willing to gamble a modest contract on the oft-injured but supremely talented player. Best of the Rest Giants receiver Hakeem Nicks did not score a touchdown in 2013, but some team will try to turn him around. Nicks may thrive with another team, but he struggled to excel with Victor Cruz commanding all the attention in New York. ... Seattle’s Golden Tate is 26 years old with a Super Bowl ring, and a team might overpay for a No. 2 receiver. Shutdown Corner's free agency preview schedule March 3: Shutdown Corners's top 25 free agents March 4: Quarterbacks March 5: Receivers/tight ends March 6: Running backs March 7: Offensive linemen March 8: Defensive backs March 9: Linebackers March 10: Defensive line - - - - - - - Anwar S Richardson is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports.
