Three teams keep head coaches but send coordinators packing (Shutdown Corner)

While the San Diego Chargers, Indanapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars held on to their head coaches, each has decided to make a significant change within its ranks. On Tuesday, the Chargers fired offensive coordinator Frank Reich, while the Colts and Jaguars each parted ways with their defensive coordinator - Greg Manusky and Bob Babich, respectively. A former quarterback who spent nine of his 13 years in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills, Reich was with San Diego for three years, the last two as coordinator. The Chargers were 26th in the NFL in points per game this season, including a four-game post-bye stretch that saw them put up 40 points - and 31 of those came in one game. They also averaged a league-worst 3.4 yards per carry. The Chargers also fired five other assistants: offensive line coach Joe D'Alessandris, wide receivers coach Fred Graves, tight ends coach Pete Metzelaars, assistant O-line coach Andrew Dees, and defensive line coach Don Johnson. Manusky, who had a 12-year playing career as a linebacker, had been with the Colts for four years. Indianapolis was in the bottom quarter of the league in several categories, including red-zone defense and points per game. Babich was the Jaguars' coordinator for three years. Jacksonville finished 31st in points allowed this season (28.0 PPG), and was also 31st in third-down defense, allowing opponents to convert 46.3 percent of opportunities. The team was also one of the worst in the league in red zone defense.
