FANTASY PLAYS: How to keep your team going with spare parts (The Associated Press)

In virtually every fantasy football league in the world, Kirk Cousins wasn't even considered as a quarterback option on draft day. Cousins was a solid fantasy performer yet again last week, with 302 yards passing, one touchdown through the air and one score on the ground. Many fantasy owners desperate for a productive quarterback in the final stretch of the regular season rode him to a victory, proving yet again that you can win crunch-time fantasy games with waiver wire castoffs.

NFL Power Rankings: Carolina Panthers finally climb to the top (Shutdown Corner)

The Carolina Panthers still have a perception problem. It's hard to imagine that in a little more than a month, we could have three teams finish an NFL regular season undefeated and untied: 1972 Miami Dolphins, 2007 New England Patriots and ... 2015 Carolina Panthers? It's possible. With just five games left, the Panthers' chase for perfection is close enough that we can start to talk about it seriously. And the remaining schedule isn't tough. They play at New Orleans, vs. Atlanta, at the Giants, at Atlanta and at home against Tampa Bay to finish it. The toughest team Carolina has left is the Falcons, and they haven't played well in almost two months. However, does this seem like a historically great team? Does Carolina even seem like a Super Bowl favorite this year? Be honest, would you pick the Panthers right now to win it all (people in the Carolinas aren't allowed to answer)? Again, this might just be a perception problem. Listen to Yahoo Sports' Grandstanding podcast for more: Grandstanding: A Yahoo Sports podcast Subscribe via iTunes or via RSS feed The Panthers weren't favored by oddsmakers last week against the Dallas Cowboys, who were 3-7. Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight site declared the Panthers the worst 11-0 team ever , and even the Panthers' Twitter feed had to take notice. k https://t.co/9NdnO8qesz — Carolina Panthers (@Panthers) November 30, 2015 Being the worst 11-0 team ever is kind of like being the worst movie to ever win "Best Picture," in that it's still not a bad list to be on no matter what spot you occupy. But still, it's a strange story. Carolina is 11-0 and completely under-appreciated. The Panthers deserve to be the No. 1-ranked NFL team. They have won all 11 games (ask New England how tough that can be) and have won eight of them by at least a touchdown. They have won their last three games by an average of 21.3 points, and that's not supposed to happen in the NFL. It's a team with an MVP candidate quarterback in Cam Newton and a defense that doesn't have many holes and superstars like cornerback Josh Norman and linebacker Luke Kuechly. Whatever we thought about the Panthers before this season or over the first few weeks doesn't matter anymore. They're legit. The beauty of the NFL is there's no committee that decides which teams deserve to play for a championship. If the Panthers keep winning, their place in history will be undeniable. Perception won't matter much then. Here are Shutdown Corner's power rankings after Week 12: 32. Cleveland Browns (2-9, LW: 31) Let's be honest: Losing that game, ultimately, is better for the Browns. They'll likely get a better draft pick as a result. But wow, that's just brutal. 31. Tennessee Titans (2-9, LW: 29) The Titans have lost 11 straight home games. That's an amazing streak of futility. 30. San Francisco 49ers (3-8, Last week: 32)

Ward suggests full-time officials as a fix (The Associated Press)

Denver Broncos safety T.J. Ward, one of the most-flagged and heavily fined players in the NFL this season, recently ripped the officials, suggesting the way to fix the league's spotty officiating is to give the men in stripes full-time jobs. ''I mean, how would you feel if you came to watch a game on Sunday and you had part-time players?'' Ward asked. ... He barely knows the rules,'' complained Ward.

So close! Blake Bortles only 3 yards past line of scrimmage on this pass (Shutdown Corner)

This isn't Dan Orlovsky running out of the end zone for a safety, but it's darned close. Quarterback Blake Bortles has had a nice second season and has the Jacksonville Jaguars in playoff contention in a bad division. But this throw he made in the second quarter against the San Diego Chargers is downright ridiculous. (The bad ridiculous, we mean.) Watch as Bortles scrambles parallel to the line of scrimmage and then completely ignore it, running a full three yards past it to deliver a "touchdown pass" to Allen Robinson. Not only was it called back correctly, but the illegal forward pass penalty cost them five yards and forced the Jags to kick a field goal. We're still laughing, Blake. Good on you.  - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Email him at edholm@yahoo-inc.com or follow him on Twitter! Follow @Eric_Edholm

NFL announces 2016 slate of UK games; city of St. Louis unhappy (Shutdown Corner)

The NFL announced the dates for its three International Series games that will be played in the United Kingdom next season, and also announced five of the six teams who will head to London: • Oct. 2, the Jacksonville Jaguars will host the Indianapolis Colts at Wembley Stadium. • Oct. 23, the St. Louis Rams will host an NFC East team at Twickenham Stadium. • Oct. 30, the Cincinnati Bengals will host the Washington Redskins at Wembley Stadium. The Rams will host whichever team finishes in the same spot in the NFC as they do in the NFC West, making it possible for Washington to become the first team to play in London in back-to-back weeks. This will be the fourth straight year the Jaguars play a "home" game in the U.K., though next year will mark the first time they face a divisional opponent; it will be the Colts' first time playing overseas. It will also be the first U.K. game for Cincinnati and the first regular-season game overseas for Washington, which played a preseason contest in London in 1992. If the Rams wind up playing the Philadelphia Eagles, it would also mark the first time that franchise has played in London. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy: $10 could win you $50K in our $350K contest for Week 12 ] The Rams serving as the home team for a game seems to come as a surprise to the St. Louis Convention and Visitors' Commission, which owns the Edward Jones Dome. The commission sent the following statement on Wednesday: "We recently became aware that the NFL has selected the Rams to play in London during the 2016 football season, and have designated them the ‘home’ team. The Rams are on a year-to year lease and have until  Jan. 28, 2016  to inform us if they will play the 2016 season at the  Edward Jones  Dome. We have had no formal discussions with the Rams about their 2016 intentions or a London game in 2016, but if they do play in the Dome in 2016, the terms of the lease remain in effect and provides that all Rams NFL home games (other than preseason) will be played at the Facilities." St. Louis is one of three teams, along with the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers, pushing to relocate to Los Angeles. The NFL may also announce a fourth International Series game for next season, which would be played in Mexico City. More NFL on Yahoo Sports

What are the worst calls by referees this season? Here are our top five (Shutdown Corner)

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Super Bowl 50, billed as a celebration of a half-century of what has become the pinnacle sporting event in the western hemisphere, was marred — before the game ever started — on an obscure automatic coin toss loss by the Carolina Panthers for sending too many captains (teams are allowed six) out to midfield against the New England Patriots, leading the Patriots to score on their deferred first possession of the second half in what would end up a 27-24 victory. Oh, phew, what a nightmare we just had! It’s understandable during this poor-call-plagued season to fear the worst: that a playoff game — or worse, the Super Bowl — could be decided on a blown call by the referees. Human error aside, the repeated issues have drawn all kinds of negative attention to the league, the quality of the games and the possibility of serious controversy for a league cloaked in it already. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy: $10 could win you $50K in our $350K contest for Week 12 ] Just past the midpoint of the season, there already have been several massive missteps by refereeing crews across the NFL. And after a Monday night affair in Foxoboro that was about as bad as we’ve seen on that front, start to finish, we’ve boiled it down to the top five missed calls this season that have been the most egregious. 1. Play blown dead in Pats-Bills We don’t want to be prisoners of the moment, but this was awful from Monday’s Buffalo Bills-New England Patriots game. Tom Brady escapes the initial rush, rolls to his right and delivers a pass — a good two feet from the sideline — to Danny Amendola, who smartly broke off his route to give Brady an outlet. The pass was pretty improvisation and could have resulted in a 69-yard Patriots touchdown and a 17-3 lead. Except for one thing: The referee blew the play dead. Why? Head ref Gene Steratore basically said after the game that the line judge lost track of the ball. So he blew his whistle? That might be the last thing one should do there; let someone who has seen the play make the call there, geez. The result — the Patriots getting the ball at the point Amendola caught it — felt almost as unsatisfactory, as the whistle clearly blew before he caught it. It was bad and could have severely impacted a playoff race. 2. Jags-Ravens ending This Week 10 error cost the Baltimore Ravens a victory and thrust the Jacksonville Jaguars into the playoffs. The Jaguars were driving late, down 20-19, and yet it appears the Ravens were about to win when quarterback Blake Bortles was sacked on fourth down with one second remaining by Elvis Dumervil. One problem: Dumervil was flagged for a facemask, which gave the Jaguars new life. On an untimed down (the game can’t end on a defensive penalty) Jaguars kicker Jason Myers hit the game-winner in a 22-20 final. Uh, but yeah, one more problem: The league acknowledged that the Jaguars should have been called for false start on the Dumervil sack play, a dead-ball foul that would have ended the game with the 10-second runoff for an offensive penalty. So the Jaguars shouldn’t have won a game they won. That’s why it’s No. 2 on the list. 3. Seahawks batted ball vs. Lions It might be a somewhat obscure rule, but it’s a rule nonetheless: A player can’t intentionally bat a ball, unless he’s trying to tip a forward pass. When the Detroit Lions faced the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4, the game came down to an illegal bat when Calvin Johnson caught a pass but was stripped of the ball at the 1-yard line by Kam Chancellor. The ball tumbled into the end zone, and Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright — making what he thought was a smart, instinctive play — clearly tipped it intentionally out of the end zone. Normally, if Johnson fumbles out of the end zone, it’s Seattle ball at their own 20. That’s what the referees ruled, not flagging the blatant bat. So instead of the Lions having the ball inside the Seattle 1-yard line with 1:45 left to play and a chance to win the game, down 13-10, the Seahawks took over and ran out the clock for a dubious victory. 4. Golden Tate catch, or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love the NFL Take your pick. It’s almost a joke at this point to wonder aloud what is and isn’t a catch in the NFL these days. Tyler Eifert, Devonta Freeman, Odell Beckham Jr. — they and scores of other offensive players have been denied catches. And in the case of Tate, defensive players have equal concerns over the definition of a catch. When the Detroit Lions faced the Chicago Bears in Week 6, Tate caught a pass from Matthew Stafford in the final minute of the first half and crossed the goal line. But before he completed the act of catching the ball — whatever that means — the ball was jarred loose and popped directly into the hands of Bears linebacker Jonathan Anderson. Here’s the way the rule reads: “In the field of play, if a catch has been completed, and there is contact by a defender causing the ball to come loose before the player who caught the loose ball is down by contact, it is a fumble, and the ball remains alive.” Fumble, or in this case interception — no difference. Except that the referees ruled Tate controlled it long enough for a touchdown, touching off the whole “what is a catch?” madness this season. We still don’t have an answer, even if NFL Head of Officials Dean Blandino says he knows (it’s everyone else who needs to learn apparently). 5. Clock error in Steelers-Chargers The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the San Diego Chargers on a walk-off touchdown by LeVeon Bell as time expired back in Week 5, and it’s a good thing they did because they were robbed of nearly 20 seconds worth of clock after taking over on their final possession. The clock operator fell asleep at the wheel after the Chargers kicked off to the Steelers, as it should have stopped before their first ensuing offensive play. But instead, 18 valuable seconds ticked off — and neither referee Pete Morelli nor side judge Rob Vernatchi noticed — before the Steelers ran their first offensive play. League spokesman Michael Signora issued a lengthy explanation the next day with this key line: "Had the side judge or any of the other six on-field officials noticed the timing error, they could have corrected it." Luckily, the Steelers won, saving them even more embarrassment. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? NFL Power Rankings: The Kansas City Chiefs have good shot at history (Shutdown Corner)

If you thought the Kansas City Chiefs' season was over at 1-5, history was on your side. Since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970, the only 1-5 team to make the playoffs was the 1970 Cincinnati Bengals. They were actually 1-6, in a 14-game season, and won out to make the playoffs. That's pretty amazing (also, as a side note, that was the team for which Bill Walsh is credited for devising what would eventually become the "West Coast Offense" ). What the Chiefs are doing is pretty remarkable, as well. Kansas City has won four in a row and is in a four-way tie for the last wild-card spot in the AFC. And they have to be considered a favorite to get a wild-card spot based on this remaining schedule: Week 12: vs. Buffalo Week 13: at Oakland Week 14: vs. San Diego Week 15: at Baltimore Week 16: vs. Cleveland Week 17: vs. Oakland Wow. Not one winning game among the six remaining opponents. Three of the worst teams in the NFL (San Diego, Baltimore and Cleveland) remain. The only .500 team, Buffalo, comes into Kansas City next week off a short week, and quarterback Tyrod Taylor hurt his shoulder on Monday night. Oakland should provide a couple tough games, but you have to figure the Chiefs get at least a split there. A 4-2 finish, given that schedule, is the bare minimum it seems. 5-1 seems about right and 6-0 might happen. Could we see a team start 1-5 and finish 11-5? Take a look at that schedule again, and you tell me. Listen to Yahoo Sports' Grandstanding podcast for more: Grandstanding: A Yahoo Sports podcast Subscribe via iTunes or via RSS feed The Chiefs have saved their season how the Chiefs under Andy Reid have always had success, and that's with a good running game (even without Jamaal Charles), a safe passing game and a really good defense. Even though the formula the Chiefs use isn't exciting, the possibility in front of them is. If they just win the games down the stretch that they'll be big favorites to win, they're going to become the first team in 35 years to start 1-5 and make the playoffs. And if they do that, who is really going to want to play them in January? Here are Shutdown Corner's power rankings after Week 11: 32. San Francisco 49ers (3-7, Last week: 32) The final score didn't really reflect it, but for a while in the second half the 49ers were in that game against the Seahawks, after falling behind early. Give them credit for continuing to play hard. 31. Cleveland Browns (2-8, LW: 31) Cornerback Justin Gilbert, a 2014 first-round pick who went ahead of Odell Beckham, among others, has played 32 snaps all season for a bad team. And 23 of those came in one game. Because of the team's other first-round pick last year, Gilbert doesn't get a ton of attention. But he's going down as an all-time bad pick. 30. Baltimore Ravens (3-7, LW: 28)

After 1-5 start, Chiefs riding 4-game winning streak (The Associated Press)

What the Kansas City Chiefs have accomplished this season is hardly rare. With their 33-3 rout of the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, the Chiefs have followed up a five-game losing streak filled with discord and disappointment with a four-game winning streak that has pushed them back into playoff contention with six games left in the season.

ICYMI in NFL's Week 11: Rams QB stays in despite helmet slam (The Associated Press)

For all of the NFL's insistence that it takes head injuries seriously, and for all of the new measures intended to ensure that players who might have a concussion will be pulled from games and checked thoroughly, there are still moments that show just how inconsistent any such policing can be. One example came Sunday, when the back of St. Louis Rams quarterback Case Keenum's helmet slammed to the ground with a little more than a minute left in the fourth quarter against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens recovered and were therefore able to kick a tiebreaking field goal for a 16-13 victory.

Houston's pick-6, Poe's TD run carry Chiefs over Chargers (The Associated Press)

The Kansas City Chiefs are on a roll, with a big defensive tackle going airborne to score a rushing touchdown and Justin Houston once again getting the better of Philip Rivers. Dontari Poe, a 346-pound tackle, scored a 1-yard touchdown on fourth down and linebacker Justin Houston returned an interception 17 yards for a touchdown as the Kansas City Chiefs embarrassed the Chargers 33-3 Sunday. With Alex Smith victorious again at Qualcomm Stadium, the Chiefs (5-5) won their fourth straight game following a five-game losing streak.

NFL Winners and Losers: Chip Kelly and Eagles get embarrassed (Shutdown Corner)

The Philadelphia Eagles’ season went up in flames on Sunday afternoon. Technically, the Eagles are still going to be hanging around the NFC East race because that division is awful. However, the Eagles are a big reason the division is so bad. Even if, somehow, the Eagles win that putrid division, they're not a team that can make any waves in the postseason. Sunday’s 45-17 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was absolute futility for the 4-6 Eagles. Doug Martin had 235 rushing yards for the Bucs, including 177 in the first half. Jameis Winston tied an NFL rookie record with five touchdown passes. The Buccaneers had 521 yards on Sunday, the second most in franchise history and the most in 35 years. Winston is playing well as a rookie, but he was just 18th in the NFL in passing yards coming in. Likewise, the Buccaneers were 18th as a team in total offense. In other words, the Eagles got absolutely shredded by a mediocre team. Can’t blame Mark Sanchez for that. The Eagles' many failures this season come back, of course, to Chip Kelly. Many people are excited for him to fail in the NFL, and he fed that machine on Sunday. And maybe Kelly is failing. His offseason moves haven’t worked well. His big gamble, trading Nick Foles and a second-round pick for the expensive Sam Bradford in his contract year, has worked out about as everyone could have guessed: With Bradford playing uninspiring football before he got hurt. And obviously the defense isn’t any better this season, because it had an embarrassing day against a Buccaneers offense that scares nobody. I don’t think Kelly is going to get pushed out in Philadelphia. That ignores that he had 20 wins the past two seasons. Only seven of 32 teams have posted double-digit wins each of the past two seasons, and Philadelphia is one of them (Denver, New England, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Seattle and Arizona are the others). Some people really, really want Kelly to fail, but he hasn’t yet. This is, however, a bad season. And it can’t be ruled out that Kelly will want out, either to a college job or maybe to the Tennessee Titans and quarterback Marcus Mariota (with a ton of draft-pick compensation from Tennessee to Philadelphia, of course). Kelly is a bit of a mystery so anything is possible. But Philadelphia simply firing him doesn’t add up. That doesn’t mean the Eagles are going to turn it around this season. They look like a lost team, and they haven’t really played well all season. They have just lost back-to-back home games to the Miami Dolphins and Buccaneers. At no point since the preseason have the Eagles looked like a playoff-caliber team. That falls on Kelly. He likely is not going to get chased back to college against his will after the season, but this season looks like an obvious step back for him and the Eagles. Sunday was a wake-up call to anyone who hadn't realized that yet. Here are the rest of the winners and losers from Week 11 of the NFL season: WINNERS Cam Newton, MVP candidate and fox tail wearer: Tom Brady is still lapping the NFL MVP field, but Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is making sure he’s right there if Brady opens the door for anyone else down the stretch. Newton was very good on Sunday, throwing for a career-high five touchdowns. He now has 20 passing touchdowns and six rushing touchdowns, mostly working with a receiving corps that would have trouble getting playing time in most other NFL lineups. He's been very good for a 10-0 team. And you know you’re really feeling it when you can wear this getup to your postgame press conference, complete with an apparently real fox tail: Cam Newton Sunday: career-high 5 TD passes, 2 glitzy shoes, 1 fox tail (yes it is real) http://pic.twitter.com/CADtsSwi9U — scott_fowler (@scott_fowler) November 22, 2015 James Jones’ hoodie: Since we’re speaking of fashion, NFL fans seemed quite fascinated at Green Bay Packers receiver wearing a green hoodie under his jersey on Sunday. First, former NFL officiating head Mike Pereira had the answer to the question everyone was wondering about: Is it legal? In short, yes, the hoodie was legal. So about James Jones' hoodie...Via: @KFC https://t.co/WsxZgqXcxW — Mike Pereira (@MikePereira) November 23, 2015 There wasn’t a crazy backstory behind the fashion statement. Our Kevin Kaduk has the full story here . Jones had 109 yards and a touchdown in a big Green Bay win , so superstitious Packers fans might try talking him into wearing it the rest of the season. Andy Reid: There are a couple of undefeated coaches so I’m not going to stump for Reid to be in the coach of the year mix, but he has done a remarkable job. The Chiefs were 1-5 and seemingly done (it’s worth pointing out here that Reid’s terrible decision to hand off to Jamaal Charles against the Broncos led to a last-minute fumble and a loss). Charles was done for the season, and he provided most of the Chiefs’ offense. It would have been easy to write off the season. But the Chiefs kept at it and after Sunday’s 33-3 win against the San Diego Chargers they are 5-5 and riding a four-game winning streak. If the Buffalo Bills lose Monday night at the New England Patriots, the Chiefs will be tied for the final AFC wild-card spot. Credit the defense. Philip Rivers came into Sunday's game on a pace for about 5,300 yards this season, and he was totally shut down. Rivers threw for just 178 yards. The Chargers didn’t score a touchdown but the Chiefs’ defense did, when Justin Houston grabbed a pick-six on a screen pass. The Chargers have a lot of injuries, but the Chiefs played really well on Sunday. The Chiefs also have a favorable schedule the rest of the way. They play one more game against a winning team, and that’s next week against the Bills at home (and by late Monday night, the Bills might not be above .500 anymore). If the Chiefs go from 1-5 to a playoff spot, give Reid a ton of credit for it. Thomas Rawls: When Marshawn Lynch was a late scratch due to injury , Thomas Rawls was thrown into the starting lineup. And he played better than Lynch has all season. Statistically, he had a better day than Lynch ever has in the NFL.  Rawls had an incredible game in a win against the San Francisco 49ers. He had 209 yards rushing, 46 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Lynch has never had more than 153 rushing yards in a regular-season game, surprisingly enough. Rawls has a 169-yard game and a 209-yard game already as a rookie, the only two games in which he has received more than 20 carries. Of course this all leads to a bigger picture talk about Lynch and his future. Lynch is slated to make $9 million in base salary next season, and his numbers are down and he is missing games for the first time in his Seahawks career. He'll be 30 years old next year. Rawls is slated to make $525,000 in 2016. It will be hard for the Seahawks to let Lynch go, if they decide on that route. Seeing Rawls play like he has will make it a little easier. LOSERS New York Jets: At one point, the Jets looked like a pretty good bet to make the AFC playoffs. Now, they can’t even beat a Houston Texans team quarterbacked by T.J. Yates, who didn’t even have an NFL job a month ago. The Jets, who started 2-1, have now lost four of five. The offense is a mess, and the defense with all those big names hasn’t been too great either. DeAndre Hopkins had 118 yards for the Texans, and a lot of that came against Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis. Chris Ivory had a quiet day on the ground for the Jets offense, and Ryan Fitzpatrick isn’t the kind of quarterback to carry a team. It was a troubling loss, and it’s not like the schedule is that easy the rest of the way. The Jets play home games against Miami, Tennessee and New England, and on the road against the Giants, Cowboys and Bills. At 5-5, the Jets will probably need to go at least 4-2 the rest of the way to make the playoffs. The team that lost at Houston doesn’t look capable of that. Atlanta Falcons: Oct. 4 was a big day for the 2015 Falcons. It’s the last time they had a good performance. The Falcons have lost four of five, and the only win in that stretch was an ugly 10-7 victory at the Tennessee Titans when Zach Mettenberger had to start for an injured Marcus Mariota. The last win before that came on a Kirk Cousins pick six in overtime against the Washington Redskins. The team that rolled to four convincing wins to start the season hasn’t been seen in a long, long time. Sunday’s 24-21 home loss to the Matt Hasselbeck-led Indianapolis Colts was really bad. Now all of a sudden the Falcons are 6-4, barely ahead of the 5-5 Buccaneers and 5-5 Seahawks. And it doesn’t look like the Falcons are up to the task of holding them both off for a playoff spot, either. The Chicago Bears’ two-point conversion call: The Bears scored with 24 seconds left, and then needed a two-point conversion to tie the game and send it to overtime. Their play call was not good. The Bears ran it. Safety T.J. Ward came off the edge and helped thwart the Jeremy Langford run, but there was nowhere for Langford to go. He was tackled, and the game was basically over. The play call was a pass and quarterback Jay Cutler checked to a run. “It was one of those deals where we had a pass checked to a run,” left guard Matt Slauson said, according to WGN Radio . “Jay felt like we had the right look and he wants to put it on us to put it in. And we just have to get it done.” WGN and Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times were among those to point out that there was an apparent miscommunication because tight end Martellus Bennett ran an outside pass route. Ward slipped in the backfield and was a big part of making the play. It’s not exactly clear what Cutler saw to cause him to change the play either. The Broncos had the Bears outnumbered in the box. If Bennett blocks Ward and the receiver to the right, Cameron Meredith, blocked cornerback Aqib Talib (which he did), it’s still eight Broncos defenders for seven Bears blockers. No obvious edge there.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco will miss the remainder of the season after tearing ligaments in his left knee, and teammate Justin Forsett's season is over after he broke his right arm Sunday. Flacco's injury occurred late in the fourth quarter of Baltimore's 16-13 win over the St. Louis Rams. Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Flacco ''tore at his ACL and I think, his MCL as well.'' Flacco was wearing a brace on his left knee after the game.

Take a hike, William "Refrigerator" Perry. There's a new big guy in the record books.  The Kansas City Chiefs' Dontari Poe became the heaviest player in NFL history to score a rushing touchdown on Sunday, plunging in from 1 yard out in a 33-3 victory against the San Diego Chargers. The Chiefs' defensive lineman is listed at 346 pounds, putting him a few training-table trips ahead of Perry, who was 335 pounds when he scored against the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 3, 1985.  Heaviest players to run for a TD via @pfref D. Why was Antonio Gates lighting into Philip Rivers on Chargers sideline? (Shutdown Corner)

Anyone able to read lips? Watch above as San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates appears to rip into his long-time quarterback, Philip Rivers, and say something somewhat threatening. We think we have a good idea of what he's saying including Gates threatening to beat a certain body part of Rivers. But why? This shouting match came after the Chargers settled for a long field goal at the start of the second quarter. Rivers scrambled on third-and-7 the play prior, so we're guessing he might have missed an open Gates on the play. This is not the Gates we know. Of course, this hasn't been the easiest season for him — he began the season with a four-game suspension and the Chargers are sitting at 2-7, tied with the fewest wins in the NFL, prior to Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chargers' frustration cup hath runneth over this seaosn. But we have a theory on why Gates might be barking at his quarterback from the past 12 seasons. CHECK OUT HIS NEW 'STACHE. Philip Rivers has a mustache, and it. is. breathtaking. http://pic.twitter.com/uCHLHPRvmc — CBS Sports (@CBSSports) November 22, 2015 - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Latest from the NFL: Smith gets franchise record on big pass (The Associated Press)

Alex Smith has broken the Kansas City Chiefs' record for consecutive passes without an interception while playing against his hometown San Diego Chargers. Smith, who played at nearby Helix High - where Reggie Bush was his teammate - came in needing six passes without a pick to break Steve DeBerg's record set in 1990. Smith got it on a big one, a 47-yard completion to running back Charcandrick West on the Chiefs' second possession.

Chiefs-Chargers Preview (The Associated Press)

The Kansas City Chiefs ended San Diego's postseason hopes in last year's finale, but its first matchup with the Chargers this season comes against a team that's well out of playoff contention. San Diego needed only a win at Kansas City on Dec. 28, but lost 19-7 to finish 9-7 and one game behind Baltimore for the AFC's final berth. Kansas City didn't help its chances this season with a 1-5 start, but three consecutive wins have moved it within one game of Buffalo for the last spot.

Week 11 Coaches on the hot seat (Shutdown Corner)

We've had the Colts' Chuck Pagano and Lions' Jim Caldwell on the hot seat for a few weeks now. Each of their teams are coming off wins, but it seems inevitable at this point that both men will be unemployed once the regular season ends. Not only is Pagano's contract set to end at the end of the season, it's possible Indianapolis owner Jim Irsay will replace general manager Ryan Grigson, which all but assures his days with the Colts would be numbered. The same is true for Caldwell. After a front-office shakeup nearly two weeks ago, owner Martha Ford named Sheldon White interim GM. If White has the interim tag removed, Caldwell may stay, but a new general manager could spell Caldwell's exit, though his contract runs through 2017. So while their seats are very much warm, we turn our attention to another coach: San Diego's Mike McCoy. The Chargers finished 9-7 last year, one game out of a wildcard berth. They enter this week at 2-7, having lost five straight games, with one of the worst defenses in the league and with an ineffective ground game, are putting nearly everything offensively on Philip Rivers.  We've seen San Diego finish seasons strong before, but the schedule this year will not make it easy: five of the Chargers' final seven games are divisional games, and four of those are on the road (in Jacksonville, Kansas CIty, Oakland and Denver). The Chiefs are rebounding after an early-season swoon, Denver still has a strong defense, and the young Raiders are putting together a solid season. ON THE HOT SEAT Mike McCoy, San Diego All of the Chargers' losses during their current five-game streak have been by eight points or less. An optimist would say they're close. A pessimist would say they can't figure out how to get over the hump. STILL ON THE HOT SEAT Chuck Pagano, Indianapolis The Colts went into their bye week on a high note, handing the Broncos their first loss of the season, then announced that Andrew Luck would be out for a while with a lacerated kidney and torn abdominal muscle. They remain atop the AFC South, their playoff chances in the hands of 40-year old Matt Hasselbeck. Jim Caldwell, Detroit If he does nothing else this season, Caldwell can say he was head coach when the Lions ended their decades long losing streak in Green Bay. SEAT'S GETTING WARM Sean Payton, New Orleans Payton may not be fired, but he may opt out of his contract at the end of this season - and he could end up in Indianapolis, going from one star quarterback in Drew Brees to another potential superstar in Luck. John Harbaugh, Baltimore It's unlikely Harbaugh would be fired with the Ravens having won the Super Bowl after the 2012 season, but this is looking like the second time in three years Baltimore hasn't made the playoffs. And at some point, he and his 2-7 team have to stop making excuses for why they're losing and just win.

Which teams need to evaluate their QBs for 2016? Browns lead the list (Shutdown Corner)

Johnny Manziel gets the chance he wanted. He'll be the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback the rest of the season. "It's big news for me," Manziel said, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I wanted the chance to be the guy and that was always my goal. I couldn't be more excited." Some teams are totally out of it for 2015 (the Browns are obviously in that group) and still have seven weeks to go. That doesn't mean there's nothing to play for. For many teams out of it — and one prominent team that is a championship contender — the rest of the season will be used to evaluate their quarterback options for 2016. That at least makes those teams interesting to watch the rest of the way. So here are the teams who will use the rest of the season to figure out if their 2016 starter is already on the roster: Cleveland Browns: They top this list. Not too many 2-8 teams in recent memory will be so interesting playing out the string. Manziel was a first-round pick, we've seen a few instances in which it seemed like the Browns didn't have a ton of interest in seeing what he can do, but he has been fairly productive. Manziel has 933 yards, five touchdowns, two interceptions and an 88.4 rating. He's coming off a 372-yard game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Manziel still does things that drive offensive coaches nuts, such as leaving the pocket when there's no pressure, looking down at the rush and not delivering the ball in the rhythm of the offense, but he gets his shot in Cleveland's last six games. Josh McCown is under contract for next year but isn't the future; if Manziel fails badly in this opportunity it's likely back to the drawing board in Cleveland. Denver Broncos: Can a team that is 7-2 and still very much a contender in the AFC look ahead to its quarterback situation the following year? Of course, just take a look at the Broncos. Brock Osweiler gets his first career start this week because Peyton Manning is injured. But as we all know, Manning hasn't played well and it's hard to believe he'll be back next season. What really makes this a really interesting situation is Osweiler is a free agent next offseason. Will Osweiler play so well that he continues to start and prices himself out of the Broncos plans? Will they know enough about him by the end of the season that they'll know if they want to invest in him as their quarterback of the future? There's an incredibly wide range of outcomes for the Broncos and Osweiler, anywhere from him starting all the way through the Super Bowl to him giving back the job to Manning after one start. It's a really unique situation. Detroit Lions: I don't think Matthew Stafford is going anywhere. There isn't much precedent for a move like that in NFL history. But there have been rumors, and I suppose that if the Lions get the top pick it's possible. And it's possible they get the top pick.  Still, Stafford is just 27 and even though he has an 83.7 career rating, people talk themselves into his arm strength and size and think he can be turned around. Hey, Jay Cutler got a good coordinator in Adam Gase, is having a good season and got the Chicago Bears off this list, so anything is possible. Houston Texans: I'm not willing to say that Brian Hoyer is definitely the starter in 2016, but realistically, their options won't be much better this offseason. Hoyer has played well, has 13 touchdowns and four interceptions, and has rebounded nicely after being benched in the season opener. But we've seen Hoyer play well before (don't forget, Deion Sanders was ready to give him a $100 million deal) and falter at the end. So I don't think we're quite past the evaluation stage. New York Jets: Ryan Fitzpatrick has had a nice, solid season. But the Jets have to ask: Is Fitzpatrick, who turns 33 this month, their best option going forward? If not him, then who? Fitzpatrick isn't anyone's idea of a franchise quarterback, but it's not like the Jets will have a ton of great options next offseason. They're 5-4 and even in the unlikely event of a total collapse they won't have a top-five draft pick. The wild card is Bryce Petty, who was drafted this year as a project. But they're in the playoff race and won't be giving Petty any playing time (they hope) this season so it'll be hard for them to know what they have in Petty. Maybe if Fitzpatrick leads New York to the playoffs, it erases all doubt. Philadelphia Eagles: That Sam Bradford-Nick Foles trade didn't work out too well for either side, did it? What do the Eagles have in Bradford and do they sign him to a contract that will undoubtedly be pretty risky? Bradford didn't have a great start to this season. He has played better lately, but now he might miss time with some injuries — and injury history is a big part of the Bradford puzzle too. Either the Eagles are going to gamble and invest in Bradford long term or look really crazy for sending a second-round pick to the Rams for a one-year, expensive and unsuccessful rental. Either way it seems like a losing proposition. The Eagles just have to hope Bradford returns soon and they have a clear opinion about him heading into the offseason. St. Louis Rams: Benching Foles this week is interesting on a few levels, including the 2016 angle. The Rams signed Foles to a two-year, $24 million extension before he started a game for them, with a $6 million roster bonus in 2016 that is guaranteed. You have to think since they have to pay him $6 million, he'll be sticking around.  But benching him now for Case Keenum, at 4-5 and still able to get in the playoff race, doesn't indicate that the Rams are thrilled about the prospect of starting him in 2016. They don't want to start him now when their only other option was Keenum. It's probable Foles gets another shot this season, and if he plays better he can establish himself as the guy for 2016. Though I suppose it's also possible Keenum could play well enough to get himself in that conversation. This situation is odd because the Rams seem stuck with Foles for another year whether they like it or not. San Francisco 49ers: This one will be interesting to track. The 49ers benched Colin Kaepernick for Blaine Gabbert, and there was a report that the franchise is done with Kaepernick . It'll be interesting to see if the team's actions play out that way the rest of the season. If Kaepernick doesn't play the rest of the season, it's really hard to imagine they pay him an $11.9 million salary for 2016. Then again, it's really hard to see the 49ers ending this season excited about Gabbert starting in 2016. Their draft position and chances of picking one of the top quarterbacks in the draft might dictate offseason decisions. But it'll be interesting to watch if Kaepernick gets one more shot, and what he does with it if that happens. Washington Redskins: I assume Kirk Cousins has done enough to get another year, but there's one thing to keep in mind about his recent surge: Cousins has had two monster games at home against bad defenses, and not much else. Here are Cousins' ratings the last five weeks: At Atlanta: 69.7 At New York Jets: 57.9 Vs. Tampa Bay: 124.7 At New England: 68.4 Vs. New Orleans: 158.3 Cousins has been incredibly inconsistent. early in the season, he had 68.8 and 69.9 ratings in losses to the Dolphins and Giants and 110.3 and 91.8 in wins against the Rams and Eagles. So yes, he has an incredible 122.6 rating in four wins and a 66.7 rating in five losses. That's hard to completely overlook. Though, with the state of quarterbacking in the NFL being what it is, it's hard to see how Washington could figure out a better plan this offseason than Cousins in 2016. Barring anything crazy, we can probably guess who these teams are starting at quarterback in 2016: Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Diego Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans. Roethlisberger latest in long line of gritty QBs (The Associated Press)

When Ben Roethlisberger started warming up on the sideline on Sunday against Cleveland, his sprained left foot protected by a modified cleat and his swagger unmistakable, it hardly mattered that the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback started the week in a walking boot or had barely broken a sweat in practice while backup Landry Jones prepared for his second career start. The moment Jones came limping to the sideline after getting his left ankle stepped on, Roethlisberger took off his baseball cap, discarded the towel around his neck and adrenaline took over. ''Ben is Ben,'' Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant said.

NFL Power Rankings: Broncos could be a better team with Brock Osweiler (Shutdown Corner)

The notion that the Denver Broncos will take a step back without Peyton Manning is strange. Manning has had one of the best careers in NFL history. He’s possibly the best quarterback ever. But whatever he did in any of his five MVP seasons has no bearing on 2015. If that was the case, just bring John Elway back to start at quarterback. He was a great quarterback once too. Things change. The truth is 2015 Manning wasn’t doing much to help the Broncos. Please don’t bring up “his win-loss record,” because that’s a nonsense stat in a team sport. Manning ‘s 67.6 rating is 51st in the NFL this season. The only player with more than 40 passes this season who has a worse rating is Ryan Mallett, and he’s out of the league. Manning has nine touchdowns and 17 interceptions. No other quarterback in the NFL has more than 12 interceptions. Forget the name or the history — 2015 Manning has been the worst starting quarterback in the NFL this season. If any other quarterback with a 9-to-17 touchdown-to-interception ratio got benched, we wouldn't think twice except to wonder what took so long. A disclaimer: It doesn’t bring me any joy to point this out with Manning. He has had a tremendous career, he has been great for the NFL and he has been a joy to watch through the years. The Denver chapter of his career, after what he went through with the neck surgeries, has been incredibly underrated. It has been nearly miraculous and hopefully we can take a step back soon and appreciate how unbelievable his Broncos years have been. What he's done in the second chapter of his career is incomparable in NFL history. Before Tom Brady won a fourth Super Bowl last season, I thought Manning was the best quarterback ever. It’s not fun seeing his career end this way.

The Fifth Coming of Clipboard Jesus: Colts sign Charlie Whitehurst off waivers (Shutdown Corner)

He is risen. Charlie Whitehurst, whose luscious locks and career as a backup quarterback earned him the nickname Clipboard Jesus , will be omnipresent on the sidelines of Indianapolis. The Colts claimed him off waivers. Colts claimed former Titans QB Charlie Whitehurst on waivers, per league source. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) November 12, 2015 The Tennessee Titans cut Whitehurst when they activated rookie running back David Cobb off injured reserve. He hasn't thrown a pass in earnest since starting for the Titans in a loss to the Colts in the final week of last season. In 2014, Whitehurst made five of his nine career starts over 10 years, completing 56.8 percent of his passes (105-of-185) for seven touchdowns and two interceptions. He owns a career quarterback rating of 87.4 in 21 appearances for the San Diego Chargers, Seattle Seahawks and Titans. Whitehurst is the age of our lord — 33 years old for those of you counting at home — which makes him a relative whippersnapper compared to current Colts starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. Indianapolis desperately needed a backup behind the 40-year-old, since Pro Bowl QB Andrew Luck is expected to miss 2-6 weeks — and possibly more — with a lacerated kidney and partially torn abdominal muscle. Whitehurst and new Colts offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski spent time together during separate stints on the Chargers in 2006 and 2009, but Clipboard Jesus apparently wasn't Chudzinski's first choice. “I talked to Coach Chudzinski, a guy I’ve got the utmost respect for,” the recently retired Jason Campbell told ESPN 980 on Thursday afternoon, according to The Washington Post . “We were together in Cleveland, spent some time together, and we had some conversations about some things. But as of right now, I told him I’m kind of enjoying what I’m doing right now. And it’s kind of hard just to up and change what I’m doing. And I told him I appreciate the interest and everything … [but] I’m just kind of chilling right now.” By the way, "I'm just kind of chilling," is the best response ever to a call about whether you'd like to be paid several hundred thousand dollars to wear a headset. Clipboard Jesus doesn't chill. He lives in all of us. When there are no longer two sets of footprints behind Colts coach Chuck Pagano on the sidelines, it will be because Charlie Whitehurst is carrying him. At least, that's a legitimate possibility right now. For the record, my computer keeps auto-correcting Whitehurst to white horse, and we should all probably consider that a sign from above, since the Book of Revelation's chapter 19, verses 11-16 informed us: I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: King of kings and Lord of lords. Amen. Vegas odds have the odds set for the Colts winning the Super Bowl at 25-to-1. Just saying. - - - - - - - Ben Rohrbach is a contributor for Ball Don't Lie and Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. NFL draft: Should NFL teams wait until 2017 for running backs? (Shutdown Corner)

We were struck by something a college scouting director said to us, off hand, a few weeks ago. “I like some of those [running backs in the 2016 draft],” he said, “but I might be inclined to wait. The next year could be really special.” The 2016 crop of running backs could include potential bell-cow backs such as Ohio State’s Ezekiel Elliott and Alabama’s Derrick Henry, if he chooses to come out. There are other potential impact runners such as Utah’s Devontae Booker, Notre Dame’s C.J. Prosise, Arkansas’ Alex Collins and UCLA’s Paul Perkins. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football: First place wins $100K in our $500K contest for Week 10 ] But the 2017 class could be an all-timer. One reason Henry might declare after this season is because the following draft might include a who’s who of talented college backs: LSU’s Leonard Fournette, Florida State’s Dalvin Cook, Oregon’s Royce Freeman, Georgia’s Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, Pitt’s James Conner (assuming he doesn’t come out after tearing his ACL this season), Wisconsin’s Corey Clement and others. Elliott, Henry, Prosise, Collins and Perkins are all juniors and theoretically could return to school, too. “I’ll be very curious to see the underclassman list this year,” the director said. “Every spot, but definitely running back. [There are] some interesting decisions there.” His struggles against Bama notwithstanding, Fournette still has star written all over him. The next group of backs — especially Cook, Freeman and Chubb — has similar potential. So if you’re a team in need of a young runner, say the Dallas Cowboys … do you wait a year? Using the 2015 class as a barometer, we’ve seen one first-round pick (the St. Louis Rams’ Todd Gurley) become an almost immediate star — with next season appearing even more exciting given that he’ll be more than a full year removed from ACL surgery. Fellow first-rounder Melvin Gordon, who was taken five picks later, has struggled behind a banged-up San Diego Chargers offensive line and has yet to flash his big-play ability from college, also fumbling four times. Some of the lower-round backs, such as Buffalo Bills fifth-rounder Karlos Williams and the Seattle Seahawks’ Thomas Rawls (undrafted), have shown just as much immediate impact. The jury remains out on Detroit Lions second-rounder Ameer Abdullah, Arizona Cardinals third-rounder David Johnson and Atlanta Falcons third-rounder Tevin Coleman. Second-rounder T.J. Yeldon has been solid for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 2016 class reads, at least at first blush, like a similar strength of class. There were eight backs taken in the first 95 selections this spring, and it could be a similar distribution this season. Way too early to say about 2017, but there might be a renaissance of runners as the league — always cyclical — slowly trends away from the 40-passes-per-game approach and perhaps more toward the ground attack. Fuller return thins out WR class The news on Wednesday that Notre Dame WR Will Fuller said he would return to school in 2016 is huge news for the Irish but a bit of a blow for the 2016 draft crop of receivers. But this is still a class that has some top-tier talent even with Fuller back on campus next fall. Right now, it appears that Ole Miss’ Laquon Treadwell is the cream of the crop. The 6-3, 216-pound Treadwell has had a phenomenal season after a cool start coming off a devastating leg injury last season. He now has a streak of five straight games with at least 100 yards receiving and a touchdown and appears to be a complete product. But the breakout season of Baylor’s Corey Coleman — and that school’s incredible success producing NFL pass catchers — makes up for the loss of Fuller in this class. TCU’s Josh Doctson also has built on his impressive college resumĂ© and opened talent evaluators’ eyes to the point where neither Big 12 receiver appears to be purely a product of their teams’ explosive offenses. Ohio State’s Michael Thomas hasn’t produced eye-popping statistics but is on pace to approach his 2014 numbers and has scored in all but two games this season for the Buckeyes, who have shuffled quarterbacks back and forth this season. Thomas, Keyshawn Johnson’s nephew, has the stature — 6-3, 210 — that NFL teams seek, along with the hands, route-running ability and hands to be taken high if he tests well. Rutgers’ Leontee Carroo, Pitt’s Tyler Boyd, Cal’s Kenny Lawler, Colorado State’s Rashard Higgins, Oklahoma’s Sterling Shepard, South Carolina’s Pharoh Cooper, LSU’s Travin Dural and even Ohio State’s Braxton Miller make up the next wave of talents at the position — which looks like a solid group, depending on which underclassmen declare. So while Fuller returning takes a top-50 talent, and perhaps a possible first-round pick, out of the mix, there could be a decent pool despite it. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Bears-Rams Preview (The Associated Press)

Jeremy Langford relished his first chance to be the Chicago Bears' feature back while excelling in the running and passing games, something Matt Forte has done so often throughout his career. With Forte pushing 30, injured and in the final season of his contract, the rookie's impressive performance placed credence in Langford's ability to make the transition into a bigger role should there be a changing of the guard in the Bears' backfield. Langford could be counted upon again for a similar effort with Forte's status up in the air for Sunday's visit to St. Louis as the Bears face a Rams team hoping to have the newly signed Wes Welker on the field.

Week 10 Coaches on the hot seat (Shutdown Corner)

Every team in the NFL has played at least eight games, so we've officially reached the midpoint of the season. But already, two head coaches have been fired ( Joe Phillbin and Ken Whisenhunt ), the Colts' offensive coordinator has been canned ( Pep Hamilton ), and Detroit parted ways with its offensive coordinator ( Joe Lombardi ) and  cleaned out its front office, firing its president and general manager. But it would be surprising if there aren't more moves made in the coming weeks. Indianapolis is coming off a huge win over Denver, but on Tuesday announced that quarterback Andrew Luck will miss time with internal injuries, including a lacerated kidney; he will be out about a month. Any momentum the Colts may have gained after knocking the Broncos from the ranks of the undefeateds may be lost. And while Luck was hurt this most recent time at the tail end of a scramble, he has been running for his life behind a sub-standard offensive line during his time with the Colts. That is the fault of general manager Ryan Grigson, but recent stories out of Indianapolis say that Grigson tries to micro-manage everything with the team, even influencing which players play, nornally a coaching decision. So Grigson could still be pushing owner Jim Irsay to can Pagano, though his contract ends at the end of this season anyway. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football: First place wins $100K in our $500K contest for Week 10 ] Fortunately for Pagano, the Colts play in the AFC South. The other three teams in the division are currently a combined 7-17. ON THE HOT SEAT Chuck Pagano, Indianapolis At this point, we almost feel badly for Pagano. He seems like a genuinely good man, but he's been hamstrung by Grigson's poor decisions. Jim Caldwell, Detroit Owner Martha Ford met with Lions players after firing Martin Mayhew and Tom Lewand, and candidly told them she expects the team to play better. Given how utterly disinterested the Lions have looked at times, Caldwell has to find a way to inspire them to improve. SEAT'S STILL WARM Jay Gruden, Washington No one really expected Washington to win on the road against the Patriots, and they didn't, but the team is now 3-5 with a game against Carolina in two weeks plus four of its six NFC East games still remaining. SEAT'S GETTING WARM Mike McCoy, San Diego What's wrong with the Chargers? They fell to 2-7 with Monday night's loss - a home loss - to the Bears. San Diego was 9-7 in each of McCoy's first two seasons, making the playoffs in his first year, but are headed in a decidedly different directlon now. The Chargers continuously have injury problems on the offensive line, which doesn't help Philip Rivers, who will be 34 next month. He has a limited number of years left at this point, and has yet to make a Super Bowl appearance.

Disney CEO agrees to join Raiders-Chargers stadium venture (The Associated Press)

Disney CEO Bob Iger has agreed to lead the effort to build a stadium for the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers in the Los Angeles area should NFL owners approve the teams' move. The announcement in a statement Wednesday comes the same day that Oakland and San Diego make presentations to NFL owners on their plans to keep the teams. The statement says Iger would serve as non-executive chairman of Carson Holdings LLC, the joint venture to build a stadium in Carson, about 15 miles south of downtown LA.

'Dirty' words: Rams' Jeff Fisher, NBC's Rodney Harrison trade jabs (Shutdown Corner)

Growing up, when you got in trouble, it probably really frustrated your mother when your defense was, "yeah, but Rodney did it too!" But that's basically what St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher did this week. On Sunday, as Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was sliding at the end of a scramble, Rams' cornerback Lamarcus Joyner charged in and almost bent in half to hit Bridgewater, his shoulder drilling the quarterback's helmet. Bridgewater was knocked out by the hit, laying prone on the turf, his eyes closed. Joyner asserted after the game that it wasn't a dirty hit, in part because he'd never go after Bridgewater because they grew up near one another in Miami. Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer, as you'd expect, disagreed with Joyner, calling it a cheap shot and noting in his postgame news conference that St. Louis defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' groups "are all like that."  Williams was the defensive coordinator in New Orleans during the bounty-gate scandal. Zimmer isn't the only one that feels that way. Former San Diego Chargers and New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison, now a commentator on NBC's Sunday Night Football, said he wasn't surprised to see a player coached by Fisher accused of a dirty hit. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football: First place wins $100K in our $500K contest for Week 10 ] “ I wasn’t surprised because it happened to me in 2006. Bobby Wade came and chopped my knees and tore my knee up. I’m lying on the ground, and I look at Jeff Fisher and he’s smiling and laughing. So this is typical of Jeff Fisher type teams," Harrison said. Harrison, who has long asserted that Wade intentionally dove at his knees on the play, suffered an MCL sprain in that game, in Week 16, and was not able to play in the playoffs. Fisher did not take too kindly to Harrison's comments, and during his Monday press conference did that whole, "yeah but you did too!" thing. "I don’t want to say I took things personal, but it was kind of a personal attack on me. But, again, I think you have to consider the source. I saw it last night on the airplane. You’re talking about a guy that had a great career. I mean, the guy played a long time. He was hard to defend. He was a really active defensive player. “But, this is coming from a guy that had 18 unnecessary roughness penalties, seven personal fouls, four roughing the passer penalties, a total of 77 penalties in his career and was voted three times the dirtiest player in the National Football League and was suspended for a hit, a helmet-to-helmet hit on Jerry Rice in 2002. Okay? This is where these comments are coming from. “I’ll just say this: Since 2000, it’s been a privilege and honor for me to be on the competition committee. Our main focus, as you guys have followed this league for a long time know, our main focus is player safety. So, for Rodney to come out and say that I did something like that is absolutely absurd. So, that’s all I have to say on that.” Appearing on Boston radio station WEEI on Tuesday, Harrison was asked about Fisher's words and initally said he'd "love to really go in like I really want to do in my heart and soul" but his bosses at NBC had asked him not to respond. Harrison may not have spilled all the tea, but he backed up his claim that Fisher's teams play dirty. “But I will say this: if anybody knows about a dirty hit, it’s me. And that’s all it was. It was about addressing the issue. It was a dirty hit. That’s what I said. And I referenced to back what I experienced with his teams and what other players have told me coming from his team, and other people. People around the league know the truth, bottom line. I’m not going to get into any details because I’m just not going to go there. I was asked not to go there. But the bottom line is, if you’ve been in the league, you know the truth.” The Rams have been called for 77 penalties thus far this year; there are seven teams that have as many or more penalties to this point. St. Louis has been flagged four times for unnecessary roughness and once for unsportsmanlike conduct.
