Labor unions, developers reach agreement on Los Angeles-area NFL stadium (Reuters)

(Reuters) - Labor leaders said on Thursday they had reached an agreement with developers of a proposed Los Angeles-area stadium project, which is backed by the billionaire owner of the St. Louis Rams, that could become home for an NFL team. The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor said in a statement it was excited about the 80,000-seat stadium project proposed for suburban Inglewood, now that its member unions have reached the jobs agreement. "The promise of good jobs - both for the project's construction and for ongoing operations - is now a guarantee," LA County Federation of Labor Executive Secretary Rusty Hicks said in a statement. The Inglewood City Council has unanimously approved the stadium, which includes Rams owner Stan Kroenke as a developer.

San Diego city, county join forces on bid to keep NFL (The Associated Press)

The county and city of San Diego are joining forces in a bid to keep its NFL franchise. Mayor Kevin Faulconer and county supervisors said Thursday that the two governments would spend up to $500,000 on consultants, attorneys, bankers and other experts. Voters will eventually decide whether to back a new stadium for the San Diego Chargers. The mayor's stadium task force is expected to announce a financing plan by May 20 in San Diego's Mission Valley area.

NFL playoff expansion delayed, LA relocations pondered (AFP)

National Football League team owners postponed a possible expansion of playoff qualifiers for another year and are looking intently at possible relocation of one or two clubs to Los Angeles. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday other issues discussed by the owners included looking at a possible punishment for Greg Hardy in a domestic violence case that did not result in charges and that there is no timeframe for a resolution in the deflated ball investigation into the New England Patriots. Owners had considered adding at least two new teams into the playoff mix and at least two more games to the opening week of the NFL playoffs, possibly with games on Thursday or Monday. The Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams and San Diego Chargers are all looking into a potential move to Los Angeles, which has not been called home by an NFL club since the 1994 season.

Advisory group holding line in Chargers stadium tussle (The Associated Press)

Members of Mayor Kevin Faulconer's advisory group are holding the line against Chargers point man Mark Fabiani, who has lobbied for a new stadium downtown even though the task force determined the best spot for a new home for the team is in the area where it plays now. The advisory group members also discount reports that financing a replacement for aging Qualcomm Stadium would require a massive development in Mission Valley. The advisory group was under the impression that Fabiani plans to tell NFL owners meeting in Phoenix that the Chargers have figured out what it will include in the financing plan.

Rams owner's NFL stadium proposal for LA would house 2 teams (The Associated Press)

An NFL team owner has designed a Los Angeles-area stadium for two clubs - with two home locker rooms, identical sets of office space and two owners' suites. The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1bluJSd ) says St. Louis Rams' owner Stan Kroenke doesn't need to partner with another NFL team to finance the $1.86-billion venue in Inglewood but that the league wants a stadium for two teams. His plan competes with one by the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders, who want to share a stadium in Carson. Kroenke hasn't said he plans to move the Rams, but analysts doubt he would invest in a stadium and not use it for his team.

LA closer to getting NFL team after stadium petition: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) - The dream of bringing national football back to Los Angeles was a step closer on Saturday after a petition to build a stadium to be shared by the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders garnered 14,000 signatures - twice as many as needed. The successful petition means the proposal will now go before the city council in Carson, California, which is in Los Angeles County, the Los Angeles Times reported. The petition drive was paid for by the two National Football League teams, which both played in Los Angeles before relocating. A rival stadium project in the city of Inglewood, also in the Los Angeles-area, was unanimously approved by its city council last month.

Proposed Chargers-Raiders stadium near Los Angeles advances (The Associated Press)

Organizers behind a proposed stadium near Los Angeles that could become home for the NFL's San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders say they have hit an important, early benchmark on the path to construction. Supporters announced Saturday they have collected 14,000 petition signatures in the city of Carson - nearly twice the number needed to place the plan before local voters. Chargers attorney Mark Fabiani says organizers are ''extremely encouraged by the sky-high level of support.'' The signatures must be verified by election officials to qualify the plan for the ballot. The Raiders and Chargers are planning a shared stadium in Carson if both teams fail to get new stadiums in their current hometowns.

The apparent demise of the development was ''overreported,'' Garcetti told KNX Radio during a regular ''Ask the Mayor'' segment. WR Stevie Johnson signs three-year deal with San Diego (Shutdown Corner)

With Eddie Royal moving on to the Chicago Bears, the San Diego Chargers filled a void at wide receiver on Tuesday by agreeing to a three-year deal with Stevie Johnson. It's official. We've agreed to terms with @steviejohnson13 !READ: http://t.co/L1Y7Q2GF7l http://ift.tt/1bdDdeb — San Diego Chargers (@Chargers) March 17, 2015 The 28-year-old Johnson will stay in California after spending one season with the San Francisco 49ers, who released him last week after the signing of Torrey Smith. In his lone season with the 49ers, Johnson hauled in 35 passes for 435 yards and three touchdowns. He arrived in San Francisco via a trade with the Buffalo Bills, where Johnson spent the first six seasons of his career. He caught only 12 passes combined in his first two seasons in Buffalo before breaking out with 82 catches for 1,073 yards and 10 scores in 2010. He followed that season with two more 1,000-yard campaigns in 2011 and 2012. He also caught 52 passes for 597 yards and three scores in an injury-filled 2013 season. Royal caught 62 passes for nearly 800 yards as San Diego’s third receiver last year alongside Malcom Floyd and Keenan Allen, so Johnson figures to have a good opportunity to see plenty of balls thrown his way by veteran quarterback Philip Rivers. - - - - - - - Sam Cooper is a contributor for the Yahoo Sports blogs. Bears sign safety Antrel Rolle, WR Eddie Royal to three-year deals (Shutdown Corner)

The Bears improved on both sides of the ball by signing safety Antrel Rolle and wide receiver Eddie Royal to three-year deals on Wednesday night. Full story just posted on #Bears signing WR Eddie Royal and S Antrel Rolle. Link: http://t.co/qGwyf9wBB9 http://ift.tt/1C7GxBD — Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) March 12, 2015 Rolle, a 10-year veteran and three-time Pro Bowl selection, started all 16 games in each of the last five seasons for the New York Giants at strong safety. The 32-year-old Rolle registered 464 tackles and 14 interceptions during his time in New York. After being picked in the first round of the 2005 draft, Rolle spent the first five seasons of his career with Arizona, where he totaled 335 tackles and 12 interceptions. Rolle, whose deal is reportedly worth $11.25 million with $5 million guaranteed, will join outside linebacker Pernell McPhee, who signed a five-year contract with the Bears earlier on Wednesday. “It’s official,” Rolle wrote on Instagram . “Today was a long, painful, and exhausting day! But in the end we both get what we want. A team that wants to win and a player that would give them everything he got to win! Thank you to the Chicago organization for making this day possible once again.” Royal spent the past three seasons with the San Diego Chargers, with his 2014 campaign being his most productive with 62 catches for 778 yards and seven touchdowns. Interestingly, the best season of Royal’s career came in his rookie year with Denver in 2008 when he caught 91 passes for 980 yards and five touchdowns. His quarterback? None other than the Bears’ Jay Cutler. Overall in his career, Royal has recorded 338 catches for 3,750 yards and 25 touchdowns. With Brandon Marshall traded to the Jets, Royal will provide a nice complement to Alshon Jeffrey and tight end Martellus Bennett. Royal has also proven to be a capable punt returner, averaging 10.6 yards and scoring twice on 111 attempts in his career. The financial terms of Royal’s deal were not disclosed. - - - - - - - Sam Cooper is a contributor for the Yahoo Sports blogs. Have a tip? Email him or follow him on Twitter! Follow @SamDCooper

Labor friction shadows potential NFL stadium in LA suburbs (The Associated Press)

Friction between organized labor and the developers of a potential NFL stadium in the Los Angeles suburbs threatened Thursday to tangle up the project even before construction started. St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke is part of a group planning to build an 80,000-seat stadium in Inglewood, near Los Angeles. Los Angeles County Federation of Labor Executive Secretary Rusty Hicks said in a statement Thursday the group wants ''signed, written agreements'' from the developer committing to good jobs for construction and operations at the stadium.

Suh to Miami, Bulaga to Packers in free agency (The Associated Press)

The free agency frenzy, trading outbreak and stunning retirements of the first day of the NFL's business year gave way to one headliner Wednesday: Ndamukong Suh. Miami signed the All-Pro defensive tackle and top prize in this year's free agent crop to a $114 million, six-year contract. It made Suh the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history, surpassing J.J. Watt's $100 million, six-year deal with Houston. At the same time our quarterback is going to be a cornerstone, Ryan Tannehill, who I have a lot of respect for: No. 1 because he has taken my hits.'' They played each other last season, a 20-16 Detroit victory.

AP Source: All-Pro back DeMarco Murray visiting Eagles (The Associated Press)

All-Pro running back DeMarco Murray will visit the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, a person familiar with the meeting said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday night because the Eagles haven't announced the visit. Philadelphia agreed to a three-year contract with running back Ryan Mathews earlier in the day, according to two people with knowledge of the deal. It's a no-lose situation for the Eagles.

Group picks current site over downtown for Chargers stadium (The Associated Press)

An advisory group appointed by Mayor Kevin Faulconer has decided that the best site for a new stadium for the Chargers is at the site of their current stadium in Mission Valley, not downtown. The decision of the Qualcomm Stadium site could be a deal-breaker for the Chargers, who have threatened to move to a Los Angeles suburb if they don't get an acceptable deal in San Diego. The Chargers have been pushing for a downtown stadium as part of a non-contiguous addition to the convention center. It recently became all but moot when the Metropolitan Transit System said it could take up to seven years and $150 million to relocate a bus yard the Chargers want to build on.

AP sources: Eagles agree to deal with Ryan Mathews (The Associated Press)

Two people familiar with the decision say the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a three-year contract with running back Ryan Mathews. Both sources spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Wednesday because the deal is pending Mathews having a physical. The Eagles were looking for a running back after trading two-time All-Pro LeSean McCoy to Buffalo last week. They had agreed to a deal with Frank Gore before he changed his mind and signed with Indianapolis.

Chip Kelly stays busy, signs CB Walter Thurmond; Ryan Mathews next? (Shutdown Corner)

Chip Kelly is staying busy. After making headlines by swapping Nick Foles for Sam Bradford on Tuesday, the Eagles officially announced two more signings Wednesday morning, while another could be on the way. First, Philly added another former Seahawk to its secondary by agreeing to a one-year deal with cornerback Walter Thurmond III . Thurmond, who played with fellow recent Eagles signee Byron Maxwell for three seasons in Seattle, is coming off a one-year stint with the Giants. After excelling as a nickel corner during his time in Seattle, Thurmond missed most of his lone year in New York due to a torn pectoral muscle he suffered in Week 2. Adding to the intrigue, Thurmond is the 10th former Oregon Duck to join the Eagles roster under Kelly, who coached Oregon from 2009-12. Thurmond played under Kelly in 2009. Thurmond could potentially start opposite Maxwell on the outside, but the Eagles also have Brandon Boykin and Nolan Carroll under contract as well on a defense that quickly looks pretty solid. In addition to signing Maxwell and Thurmond, the Eagles added Kiko Alonso and re-signed Brandon Graham at linebacker. On the offensive side of the ball, the Eagles re-signed quarterback Mark Sanchez to a two-year contract that’s reportedly worth “as much as $16 million.” After Foles broke his collarbone against the Houston Texans in Week 9, Sanchez assumed the starting role for the Eagles and threw for 2,418 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 64.1 percent of his passes. Of more interest to Eagles fans is the reported signing of running back Ryan Mathews , formerly of the San Diego Chargers. Mathews struggled with injuries last year, but has been very productive when healthy. He played in only six games in 2014, but played in all 16 games and had a career-high 1,255 yards for the Chargers in 2013. The reported signing of Mathews, a first round pick in the 2010 draft, comes after Frank Gore reportedly had a change of heart on an agreement to head to Philly. Instead, Gore had second thoughts and signed with Indianapolis on Tuesday. If the signing comes to fruition, Mathews replaces Pro Bowler LeSean McCoy, who the Eagles sent to Buffalo for Alonso in a trade that became official on Tuesday. Since assuming general manager duties earlier in the offseason, Kelly has wasted no time in reshaping the Eagles’ roster – especially on offense. Foles, McCoy and wideout Jeremy Maclin are all out the door, leaving many wondering what exactly Kelly has up his sleeve. - - - - - - - Sam Cooper is a contributor for the Yahoo Sports blogs. The San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms of a five-year contract with guard Orlando Franklin, an unrestricted free agent from AFC West rival Denver. Franklin has been a starter since his rookie season of 2011. He started all 17 games at left guard in 2014, including the divisional playoff game. During his first three seasons he started 53 of 54 games at right tackle.

Colts start free agency on veteran route with Cole, Gore (The Associated Press)

The Colts are betting big on experience. On Tuesday, they fortified one of the NFL's younger rosters with three longtime NFL veterans - outside linebacker Trent Cole, running back Frank Gore and defensive end Kendall Langford - in a free-agent spending spree that may not be over. Indianapolis also is reportedly interested in adding former Texans receiver Andre Johnson. ''I've watched the Colts over the past few years and I know what kind of team they are,'' said Cole, a pass-rushing linebacker who spent his first 10 seasons with the Eagles before being released last week.

Withdrawal of LA stadium plan reorders chase for NFL teams (The Associated Press)

The demise of an NFL stadium proposal in the heart of downtown Los Angeles has reordered the competition to lure professional football back to the region after two decades of game-less Sundays. The pullout by Anschutz Entertainment Group ended a dream of having a team play in the shadow of the city's skyline. WHAT'S IN PLAY The Oakland Raiders, the San Diego Chargers and the St. Louis Rams each have signaled a willingness to relocate. The Raiders and Chargers are planning a shared stadium in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson if both teams fail to get new stadiums in their current hometowns.

AEG abandons plan to build NFL stadium in downtown Los Angeles (Reuters)

By Alex Dobuzinskis LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - AEG has dropped its project to build a National Football League stadium in downtown Los Angeles, the entertainment company said, following moves by two groups that put forward competing stadium plans this year for suburbs of the city. The statement late on Monday from Anschutz Entertainment Group, which launched its effort to build a stadium in 2010, came ahead of an April 17 deadline imposed by Los Angeles for the company to lure an NFL team to the city. The Los Angeles region, which is the nation's second-largest sports market, has been without an NFL team since the Rams left Anaheim for St. Louis and the Raiders moved to Oakland, in northern California, before the start of the 1995 season. The proposed stadium would have been located in downtown Los Angeles next to the city's convention center.

NFL teams ready to spend big as free agency market opens (Reuters)

(Reuters) - With the shelves stocked with pricey high-end talent, teams will arrive at the National Football League's free agency market on Tuesday ready to spend. The NFL's free agent market, which opens for business at 4:00 p.m. ET, attracts both big-spenders and bargain-hunters all looking for the same thing - pieces to a Super Bowl puzzle. The salary cap for next season has been set at $143 million and the two teams with the most money to spend under the cap are the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders, who both posted 3-13 records last season. The Miami Dolphins are ready to make a splash, reportedly set to make surly three-time first-team All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who spent the first five years of his career with the Detroit Lions, the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.

Downtown LA NFL stadium plan declared defunct; others remain (The Associated Press)

Farmers Field had a prime location in downtown Los Angeles, big-time boosters, a builder with an impeccable professional sports resume, even a name and sponsor - rare for a project in the planning stages. What it did not have was an NFL team attached. Just months after it was the latest, greatest hope for bringing the NFL back to the city for the first time in 20 years, the stadium project was declared dead by its developer AEG on Monday. Its demise was sped by a pair of competing stadium plans that had the unbeatable advantage of having NFL owners and their teams attached.

Potential landing spots for former Texans WR Andre Johnson (Shutdown Corner)

After being released by the Houston Texans on Monday, Andre Johnson immediately became one of the best free agent wide receivers on the open market. The 33-year-old Johnson is coming off an 85-catch season but was reportedly told by head coach Bill O’Brien that he’d see a reduced role in the Texans’ offense moving forward. His 1,102 catches for 13,597 rank him second among all active receivers behind fellow free agent Reggie Wayne. Johnson will certainly have his fair share of suitors for his services. Here are some teams who could be potential landing spots for Johnson: Seattle Seahawks In Johnson’s 12 years in Houston, the Texans only reached the playoffs only two times. He’ll want to play for a winner at this point in his career and Seattle, coming off back-to-back Super Bowl appearances, could be that team. Russell Wilson has never had a true go-to target since being drafted. At 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, Johnson could be that guy. Philadelphia Eagles With Jeremy Maclin heading to Kansas City to play under former Eagles coach Andy Reid and DeSean Jackson long gone, Philly suddenly has a huge void at wideout. Sure, Jordan Matthews had a nice rookie season, but beyond Matthews is never-open Riley Cooper and slot guy Josh Huff. Bringing in a steady target like Johnson makes sense. New England Patriots How does a Julian Edelman, Andre Johnson and Brandon LaFell trio sound? Adding a physical receiver with size like Johnson to play opposite LaFell with Edelman in the slot would certainly put fear in the hearts of AFC East defensive coordinators. Oh, and that goes without mentioning a guy named Rob Gronkowski at tight end. I assume Tom Brady would approve. Indianapolis Colts The Colts opted not to re-sign Reggie Wayne, but could trade one veteran receiver for another if Johnson were to come aboard. He could provide an excellent complement to the speedy T.Y. Hilton for Andrew Luck. Johnson is certainly familiar with the AFC South, but would Indianapolis bring in another veteran at the expense of giving second-year wideout Donte Moncrief an expanded role in the offense? Miami Dolphins Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson won’t be back and Mike Wallace’s future with the team is a big question mark, so Miami could use some help at wideout. While Jarvis Landry, who is entering his second season as a pro, has a promising future, Ryan Tannehill could use another target to take the pressure off the youngster. Johnson, who played collegiately at Miami, would make sense. Carolina Panthers Cam Newton and Kelvin Benjamin could use some help. Adding a veteran like Johnson would be an obvious upgrade for the Panthers’ passing game and a boon for Benjamin’s development. The Panthers already locked up Greg Olsen at tight end, but are still severely lacking depth at wide receiver. Going after Johnson is a no-brainer. San Diego Chargers Keenan Allen never really took that next step forward like the Chargers hoped he would last season. Though Allen (77 catches, 783 yards, 4 TDs) and Malcom Floyd (52 catches, 856 yards, 6 TDs) are still around, adding Johnson would give Philip Rivers just another weapon to throw the ball and ease the loss of Eddie Royal (62 catches, 778 yards, 7 TDs) to free agency. Cleveland Browns With Josh Gordon suspended again, new quarterback acquisition Josh McCown needs someone to throw the ball to besides 5-foot-7 Andrew Hawkins. If Johnson signed with Cleveland, he’d immediately become the best receiver on the roster. It’d be a major coup for Ray Farmer, but would Johnson be interested? - - - - - - - Sam Cooper is a contributor for the Yahoo Sports blogs. Have a tip? Email him or follow him on Twitter! Chargers sign wide receiver/kicker returner Jacoby Jones (The Associated Press)

The San Diego Chargers on Friday signed Jacoby Jones, the wide receiver and kicker returner who was a major contributor to the Ravens' last Super Bowl championship but who was cut by Baltimore last week. Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said in announcing Jones' two-year deal that one of San Diego's offseason goals was to upgrade its return game. Said Telesco: ''We feel Jacoby brings a dynamic aspect to our kick and punt returns that we need and he also has solid experience playing wide receiver.'' The 30-year-old Jones played three seasons with Baltimore after a five-year run with Houston.

NFL stadium supporters in LA suburb file ballot paperwork (The Associated Press)

Organizers behind a proposed stadium for the Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers in a Los Angeles suburb filed paperwork Wednesday to bring their plan before voters. Submission of the ballot initiative to the city of Carson, California, marks an incremental step in development of the $1.7 billion project. The Raiders and Chargers announced last month they are planning a shared stadium in Carson if both teams fail to get new stadiums in their current hometowns. A ballot approval would put the plan on the same footing as another NFL stadium project 10 miles away in Inglewood that is backed by St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke.

From famed Super Bowl gatecrasher Dion Rich to an unofficial mascot called Boltman, Chargers fans turned out Monday night to support their team, which is threatening to move to a Los Angeles suburb if it doesn't get a new stadium in San Diego. Some 400 fans, many wearing Chargers jerseys, packed a lounge at aging Qualcomm Stadium for a public forum held by an advisory group appointed by Mayor Kevin Faulconer to recommend a site and financing plan for a new stadium. The Chargers and Oakland Raiders recently announced plans to build a $1.7 billion stadium in Carson if they can't get new stadiums in their current cities.
