With New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo saying it would be "impractical" for the Buffalo Bills to host the New York Jets as scheduled on Sunday, given the heavy snow that has hit the area, the NFL will not play the game in Buffalo. The NFL announced on Thursday afternoon that the game would not take place in Buffalo due to the storm. Instead, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Thursday night that the game will be 7 p.m. Eastern time in Detroit. Having the game in Buffalo just wasn't possible or safe. "All available public safety resources must be available for the community at this time," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said on Twitter. The three sites that were in consideration wre Detroit, Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh, according to the New York Post . The Philadelphia Eagles played a 2010 home game against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 16 on a Tuesday night because of snow. Two weeks earlier, the Vikings played a "home" game against the New York Giants in Detroit after the Metrodome's roof collapsed following a snow storm. The New Orleans Saints' home games in 2005 were moved from the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina damaged it. In 2003, the San Diego Chargers played a Monday night game at Arizona State University due to wildfires in San Diego. A 2008 game in Houston between the Ravens and Texans, slated for mid-September, was rescheduled for Nov. 9 that year because of a hurricane. Cuomo said he was against having the game in Buffalo on Sunday. “If you ask me today, right now, my two cents would be it’s impractical to do the game because it would jeopardize public safety. Maybe we get a break somewhere along the way, we get a break from the weather, the snow, the rain, and if there’s any way we could scramble to get it done, we’ll do everything we can to deploy resources to make it possible,” Cuomo told WKBW in Buffalo, per the AP . “But now we’re focused on public safety.” The Bills were unable to practice on Wednesday or Thursday because of a driving ban in the area. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports.
