An NFL memo sent to clubs in the wake of Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis visiting Las Vegas says there is no rule against moving a team to any city. The note, made public over the weekend, leaves open the door to the possibility of relocating the Raiders, or any club, to the US gambling center despite the NFL's hard stance against any betting associations to preserve credibility of results. The Raiders have no lease for next season after being thwarted in a bid to relocate to Los Angeles starting next season.

Archie Manning speaks deliberately and carefully when addressing whether his 39-year-old son, Peyton, might be playing his final NFL game when he returns to the Super Bowl. The NFL says reported concussions rose 58 percent in regular-season games to the highest number in any of the past four years. The league's concussion data for 2015 also showed that helmet-to-helmet hits were way up. Jeff Miller, the NFL's senior vice president of health and safety policy, said during a conference call the league will study what might have caused the incidence of head injuries to rise so much this season.

Chargers agree in principle to join Rams in L.A., but will they? (Shutdown Corner)
The Chargers are one step closer to moving back to Los Angeles. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune , the franchise has agreed in principle to join the Rams in L.A. and share a stadium in Inglewood. Chargers owner Dean Spanos now must decide if he can make the team work two hours north of their home since 1961, or whether it’s best to work things out with the city of San Diego and use this latest agreement as leverage toward leaving. The Rams left St. Louis for Los Angeles, which they previously had left after the 1994 season. Rams owner Stan Kroenke was given first rights to his franchise relocating, and the Chargers — ahead of the Oakland Raiders — were given first rights to join the Rams there. The Chargers have until January 15, 2017, to invoke their privilege to move to Los Angeles, although agreeing to a stadium deal locally could allow that timetable to stretch into 2018, allowing for bureaucratic hang-ups and such. But this latest announcement feels like the latest domino to fall toward a second team joining the Rams in Inglewood. It’s your move, San Diego, if you want to keep this team. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Senior Bowl: What a scout’s interview with a prospect sounds like (Shutdown Corner)
MOBILE, Ala. — This is the epicenter of the NFL for a few days, and the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel is ground zero for scouts to do much of their work. Oh yes, the practice fields are important. But the interviews, which will go on before and after the daily practice sessions, are equally as huge. Scouts pull players into corners, down hallways and behind doors to steal a few minutes of fact time. It’s where many of the teams stay, it’s where all of the players are staying, so much of the action not on the field happens here. Scouts have questions. They hope the players have answers. The right answers, that is. In one corner of the hotel, a San Diego Chargers scout is grilling Maryland DT Quinton Jefferson about anything and everything. Firing off questions like a veteran courtroom prosecutor. “How many brothers and sisters do you have?” “What do you eat for breakfast?” “And what happened with that little fight you had?” They’re essentially private investigators, these scouts, spending hundreds of days on the road each year with their ears firmly planted on the ground. They know all.

John Elway and Gary Kubiak gambled big. Those gambles paid off (Shutdown Corner)
John Elway, as a general manager, isn't happy with the virtual check down. Elway's agressive, Super Bowl or bust mentality was never more evident than when he fired John Fox a year ago following a fourth division title in Fox's four seasons. Elway wasn't happy with some of the things he had seen from the Denver Broncos in their playoff losses. So Fox was gone. Gary Kubiak, the Broncos' new coach, had his own controversial decision to make during this season. He decided to bench a quarterback who led wins over Cincinnati and New England for a 39-year-old who had nine touchdowns and 17 interceptions in the regular season. And now Elway and Kubiak are going to the Super Bowl. Fortune favors the bold, indeed. "That’s what it is all about," Elway said after the AFC championship trophy presentation. "Especially to do it at home and be able to do it in front of our fans. To be able to stand up there, to me that makes all the work worthwhile, looking at the fans and knowing we have a chance to be world champs again." Elway was never bothered by throwing into tight coverage as a Hall of Fame quarterback. He has made bold moves as an executive. He moved on from Tim Tebow right after the Broncos won a division title and a playoff game with him (yes, at one point this was considered controversial by some). He has been aggressive in free agency. And then came his most unconventional move, firing Fox after he went 46-18 with the Broncos. It's not unprecedented for a coach to be fired after a double-digit win season, but it is really rare. Elway said he wasn't happy his team didn't go out "kicking and screaming" in the playoffs the last couple years. He made it clear through the Fox firing that anything less than a Super Bowl wasn't good enough. " When he came in here he had won a lot of football games and to be able to come in and get us back to the Super Bowl has been tremendous," Elway said. "T here is not a better guy for the job ,"

Denver's defense carries Manning back to the Super Bowl (The Associated Press)
Peyton Manning is glad he doesn't have to face Denver's dizzying defense. The Broncos bashed Brady throughout a 20-18 dethroning of the New England Patriots in the AFC championship Sunday that sent Denver to a record-tying eighth Super Bowl. Von Miller's monster performance led the way for a dominant defense that hit Brady 23 times and forced him into 29 incompletions, two fourth-down flops, and a costly interception on a failed 2-point try that would have tied it with 12 seconds left.

Going north? Chargers have applied to trademark 'L.A. Chargers' (Shutdown Corner)
It could be a just-in-case move, but San Diego Chargers ownership applied to trademark the names "Los Angeles Rams" and "L.A. Rams" last week. The applications are signed by A.G. Spanos, the team's president of business operations and the oldest son of owner Dean Spanos. The trademarks would cover all manner of merchandise, since presumably Los Angeles Chargers ear muffs will fly off the shelves in Southern California. When the NFL announced that Rams' owner Stan Kroenke's stadium and relocation plan had been approved, returning that team to Los Angeles, the league also announced that the Chargers and Dean Spanos had been given the first opportunity to join with the Rams and partner with them on the stadium. If the Chargers decided against that move, the Oakland Raiders would then get the chance. But signs are pointing to the Chargers moving two hours north. There's a trademark applications, of course, but the team also began formal negotiations with the Rams on Monday. PODCAST: Are the Packers wasting Aaron Rodgers' best years? Column: Hard to feel sorry for Spanos and the Chargers (The Associated Press)
It's hard to feel sorry for Dean Spanos, even if he looked like someone had just kicked his dog the other day in Houston. Several generations of them grew up rooting for the hometown team, only to have Spanos scheme to move it north after 55 years in San Diego without as much as a proper goodbye. Now he's left with a pair of options he couldn't have envisioned when crafting the master plan to flee San Diego for a spot between freeways in Los Angeles.

Can Denver QB Mningan outscore injury-hit Steelers? (Reuters)
The stars appear to be aligning for the Denver Broncos in their quest for a second Super Bowl appearance in three years, but big questions remain as the AFC's top seed heads into Sunday’s Divisional playoff game against Pittsburgh. The Steelers (10-6) suffered a double dose of bad injury news on Friday with their leading receiver, Antonio Brown (concussion), and leading rusher DeAngelo Williams (foot) ruled out for the game. Listed as questionable was two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who might be restricted by a sprained joint and torn ligaments in his throwing shoulder even if he is able to suit up.

San Antonio woos Raiders in relocation bid (AFP)
Texas billionaire Red McCombs, a former owner of the NFL Minnesota Vikings and NBA San Antonio Spurs, is encouraging the Oakland Raiders to consider relocating to San Antonio. McCombs told KZDC radio that he would be willing to invest in the team if that would help lure Raiders owner Mark Davis into the Alamodome as a temporary home while a new stadium is built. "We still have to get them to want to come," McCombs said.

NFL Playoff Preview: Broncos, Steelers have different QB questions (Shutdown Corner)
Pittsburgh Steelers (11-6) at Denver Broncos (12-4) Sunday, 4:40 p.m. ET on CBS STEELERS AT A GLANCE How they got here: The Steelers are survivors. They seemed dead going into Week 17, but a New York Jets loss allowed them to make the playoffs. They looked finished when the Cincinnati Bengals intercepted Landry Jones with 1:36 left in a wild-card game, but a crazy turn of events that included Jeremy Hill's fumble, Ben Roethlisberger's dramatic return from injury and a couple incredibly bad penalties by the Bengals allowed the Steelers to steal a win. The problem for the Steelers now is just getting healthy, with Roethlisberger, receiver Antonio Brown and running back DeAngelo Williams all banged up. Brown is out, Williams is trending that way and we have no idea how well Roethlisberger can throw with a shoulder injury, if he plays. Key player: I don't have any idea how a quarterback can play an NFL game with a sprained AC joint and torn ligaments in his throwing shoulder, but Roethlisberger got off the bench to lead a game-winning drive with those issues, and he hasn't been ruled out for this week's game. I think anyone would bet on Roethlisberger, one of the NFL's toughest players, trying to play. But can he throw downfield, or have decent velocity on any of his passes? If he can't play, Landry Jones steps in. Jones has had some decent moments this season but it's asking a lot for him to play well on the road in the playoffs against a defense that ranked first in the NFL in yards allowed, passing yards allowed and sacks. Why they’ll win: If Roethlisberger can play at a reasonable level, the Steelers have enough depth at the skill positions that they still have capable weapons even without Brown and presumably without Williams. As long as Roethlisberger is in the starting lineup and can reasonably function, Pittsburgh has an offense that can put up points. And the defense is capable of making plays. Why they’ll lose: It's impossible to underestimate the loss of Brown. If you ranked him as the best non-quarterback in the NFL, it's not crazy. The Broncos' fantastic secondary can concentrate on shutting down everyone else without devoting so many resources to slowing down Brown. Oh, and the Steelers have a quarterback who says he has torn ligaments in his throwing shoulder. That can't be a positive. The offense won't be at full strength, and offense is what makes the Steelers dangerous. Keep in mind: The Steelers scored 34 points in a Dec. 20 meeting against the Broncos. Denver's top-ranked defense didn't allow 30 or more to any other team. So Pittsburgh will feel it can move the ball on Sunday. Though, of course, those 34 points came from a Steelers offense that was a lot healthier. BRONCOS AT A GLANCE How they got here: The Broncos went from being in danger of making the playoffs to the No. 1 seed in the span of a little more than a week. Going into Week 16, there was a scenario in which the Broncos would have been out of the playoffs with a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. But the Broncos beat the Bengals in overtime, then got a break when the New England Patriots lost in Week 17 to the Miami Dolphins. With the help of quarterback Peyton Manning off the bench, the Broncos beat the San Diego Chargers in the regular-season finale and got the AFC's No. 1 seed. The Broncos have had a top-two seed in the AFC each of the last four seasons, which is a heck of a nice run. Last week the Broncos answered a huge question by naming Manning their starter for the divisional round. Key player: While all eyes are on Manning, he needs help. Demaryius Thomas is the key. Thomas has had a bit of a disappointing season as he has struggled with drops. But he still had 105 catches, 1,304 yards and six touchdowns with less-than-stellar quarterback play. Thomas has the ability to take over a game, and you have to figure that the tunnel screens the Broncos prefer will be a big part of the game plan this week. The Broncos offense isn't great, but Thomas can provide a few big plays that will make all the difference. Why they’ll win: The Broncos have the best defense in the league, home-field advantage and a running game that can get hot and carry the offense. It's hard to imagine Manning having a huge game, based on what we've seen this season, but Denver might not need it. They will need Manning to be mistake-free, and let the defense and its top-shelf pass rush carry the day. Why they’ll lose: Denver has been inconsistent, and that's a reflection of its quarterback play. It's possible we look back on the decision to go to Manning as the wrong one, after he posted a ghastly 67.9 rating in the regular season. The defense also has some questions after the Steelers did very well against them in the first meeting. But even if the defense plays very well, the Broncos need something out of the offense. And imagine the reaction if Manning goes one-and-done against a beat-up Roethlisberger (or, heaven forbid, Landry Jones) this weekend. Keep in mind: We have no idea what to expect from Manning. He hasn't started a game since Nov. 15. He hasn't posted a positive touchdown-to-interception ratio in a game since Sept. 27. Was it injuries holding him back? That's what the Broncos are banking on. However, this season looked like a continuation of his struggles from last season, which included a bad playoff game in a loss to the Colts. Manning started and finished eight games this season and had at least 35 attempts in six of them, and that seems like a recipe for a loss for Denver. But who knows? Maybe attempting only nine passes over two months will mean Manning is fresh and sharp for one final playoff push. OUTLOOK How do you predict this game? Will it be a reasonably healthy Roethlisberger, or a shell of the Steelers quarterback? Or will we see Jones handing off to Fitzgerald Toussaint and Jordan Todman? We already know the Steelers will be without Brown, and that's a massive blow. And then it's impossible to predict how Manning will play. The one thing we do know in this game is that the Broncos defense is nasty. Even though the Steelers played very well in the first meeting, the Broncos were very thin at safety because of injuries. Denver's defense will be better this time around, especially since the Steelers' offense will be far from 100 percent, and that will be enough to carry a Broncos win. Injury, comeback force reboot on Manning story line (The Associated Press)
No one ever really rooted for Peyton Manning to fail, but boy, did some folks like to point out his flaws. Take the Super Bowl, for example. ''A lot of people have looked at him the last few weeks and said, 'Wow, this guy is not who I thought he was,''' said retired receiver Brandon Stokley, a longtime favorite of Manning's. ''It's great for people to see who he really is.

The next NFL drama: Rams and Chargers negotiate to share L.A. stadium (Reuters)
By Robin Respaut and Mark Lamport-Stokes SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The National Football League’s decision this week on Los Angeles relocations ended one long-running drama but started another. The league approved the St. Louis Rams’ move to L.A. but only gave conditional approval for the Chargers to join them. The unique dynamic sets up a fresh round of brinkmanship involving the Rams, the Chargers and San Diego that could drag on another year.

Stadiums outweigh supporters for NFL, world's richest league (AFP)
When NFL owners looked at the potential revenue boost from a game-changing super stadium in the US entertainment capital Los Angeles, all the St. Louis Rams supporters and stadium plans meant nothing. A 30-2 vote of team owners Tuesday sent the Rams back to the Southern California city, where they had spent 49 seasons before going to St. Louis in 1994 and where they will play again next season before their new 70,000-seat stadium is completed in 2019. Rams owner Stan Kroenke's vision of a $1.86 billion complex with shops, restaurants and attractions built near the old Hollywood Park race track and the renovated former home arena of the NBA Los Angeles Lakers in Inglewood was an offer the NFL could not refuse.

Mayor hopes for fresh start with Chargers on stadium talks (The Associated Press)
Mayor Kevin Faulconer says the NFL's rejection of the Chargers' plans to build a stadium in Carson gives both sides the opportunity for a fresh start in what has been a bruising saga in San Diego. The Chargers walked away from talks with city and county leaders in June. While the NFL owners rejected their plans to build a stadium with the rival Raiders, they gave the Chargers the option to join the St. Louis Rams in Inglewood.

Remember the NFL in Toronto? That was a close one (Eh Game)
Go back to near on a decade ago, and it was regarded as pretty much a foregone conclusion that the NFL would ultimately land in Toronto. Play that one out in an alternate universe, and this morning it would be Toronto and not Los Angeles that’d be “celebrating.” Keep those air quotes operational. In a world where NFL franchises are moved around like pieces on a Monopoly board, we sure dodged a bullet. A sub-70-cent dollar , the death of the principals behind the Bills in Toronto series/debacle , and the sale of said Buffalonians since, and the NFL-to-Toronto storyline appears deader than the St. Louis Rams. At least for now it is, and given the steaming piles of verbiage out of the mouths of millionaires, we have been spared a mighty torrent of claptrap and the usual NFL game of stick-em-up, now headed t o San Diego, with Oakland on deck: "Stability is something we’ve taken a great deal of pride in” – Roger Goodell. "(St. Louis) is certainly an NFL town” – Jerry Jones. (Viz that parting gift of $100 million to try and keep this shell game alive). “We have the return of the Los Angeles Rams to their home ” – Goodell, again. (Erm, that’d be Cleveland, actually, home of the 1945 NFL champion Rams .)

San Diego mayor open to continuing 'good faith' talks with Chargers (Shutdown Corner)
When the dust finally settled in Houston on Tuesday after the NFL owners' meetings, the St. Louis Rams were once again the Los Angeles Rams, and the San Diego Chargers have first crack at joining them in the stadium that will be built in Inglewood. Now we may see the dance commence again in San Diego, with local officials and Chargers owner Dean Spanos discussing a new stadium in the city to replace Qualcomm, which would host its 50th season of football if the Chargers stay for the 2016 season. Things have been contentious at times, with city officials long contending they can't afford to foot the bill for a new facility. But after news came on Tuesday night that NFL owners had voted to support the Rams' move to Inglewood and not the Chargers-Oakland Raiders plan to build a facility in Carson, the mayor of San Diego and the San Diego County supervisor said they would be willing to re-open talks with Spanos - but they will not be used. “Today NFL owners rejected the Chargers’ bid to move to Carson If Mr. Spanos has a sincere interest in reaching a fair agreement in San Diego, we remain committed to negotiating in good faith. We are not interested in a charade by the Chargers if they continue to pursue Los Angeles,” Mayor Kevin Faulconer and county supervisor Ron Roberts said in a statement. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy: $10 could win you $20K in our $175K divisional-round contest ] In his own statement, Spanos said he will now consider the options available to the Chargers. “I will be working over the next several weeks to explore the options that we have now created for ourselves to determine the best path forward for the Chargers,” he said. The NFL is willing to give Spanos an extra $100 million to put toward a new stadium in San Diego, on top of the $200 million loan he's entitled to. But at current stadium construction costs, $300 million is around a quarter of what it would likely cost to get a new place built. The city and county have proposed a $350 million public contribution. Spanos said on Tuesday night that he intends to take some time and consider his options.

St. Louis politicians blast NFL, Rams owner Stan Kroenke over move (Shutdown Corner)
The Rams are leaving St. Louis for Los Angeles , and the city's politicians are pretty upset about it. Mayor of St. Louis Francis Slay blasted the NFL, St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger took Rams owner Stan Kroenke to task, and other politicos joined in after the league's owners approved the move. The focus of their statements surrounded Kroenke's alleged failure to negotiate in good faith with the city to keep the Rams in St. Louis and the NFL's deviation from guidelines in place to prevent such a move. Following the NFL's 30-2 decision, Slay released the following statement : "The NFL ignored the facts, the loyalty of St. Louis fans, who supported the team through far more downs than ups, and the NFL ignored a strong market and viable plan for a new stadium. I am proud of our effort and what St. Louis was able to accomplish in an extraordinarily short period of time. I thank everyone who worked so diligently on this project, especially the Governor's Task Force." In a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell last week, Slay wrote, "I have been Mayor of St. Louis since (2002) and I — to this day — cannot ever remember meeting Stan Kroenke ... much less engaging with him in any conversations about the future of NFL football in St. Louis.” NFL guidelines suggest: "Because League policy favors stable team-community relations, clubs are obligated to work diligently and in good faith to obtain and to maintain suitable stadium facilities in their home territories, and to operate in a manner that maximizes fan support in their current home community. A club may not, however, grant exclusive negotiating rights to a community or potential stadium landlord other than one in its current home territory." In Tuesday's statement, Slay continued, "St. Louis is a great place to live and build a business — with or without NFL football," and Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon echoed that sentiment in a statement of his own : "The fact remains that St. Louis is a world-class city deserving of a world-class NFL team." Nixon continued: “Tonight’s decision is disappointing, and a clear deviation from the NFL’s guidelines. It is troubling that the league would allow for the relocation of a team when a home market has worked in good faith and presented a strong and viable proposal. This sets a terrible precedent not only for St. Louis, but for all communities that have loyally supported their NFL franchises." Tough night for all of us who worked so hard to keep the #Rams in #STL . We will review decision & determine next steps #STLNFL — Governor Jay Nixon (@GovJayNixon) January 13, 2016 While a number of local politicians weighed in on the decision, Sterger's statement was the most biting. “As a football fan and a lifetime resident of the St. Louis area, I am bitterly disappointed in tonight’s news. This region deserves an NFL team. This region is fully capable of supporting an NFL team. That team should have been the Rams. The NFL and Stan Kroenke have displayed a callous disregard for the St. Louis area and its loyal football fans.” Nixon appointed an STLNFL Stadium Task Force that proposed a $1.1 billion stadium project on the city's waterfront to be built using $400 million in public funding, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch . The NFL offered the Chargers and Raiders an additional $100 million to respectively remain in San Diego and Oakland. Instead, Kroenke has been planning to construct a $1.9 billion stadium in Inglewood, Calif. The task force also released a statement : "Today’s decision by the NFL concludes a flawed process that ends with the unthinkable result of St. Louis losing the Rams. Over the past 15 months, our stadium task force has delivered in every respect to what the NFL demanded of St. Louis to keep our team. More important, over the past 21 seasons, most of them dire, St. Louis has been remarkably supportive of and faithful to the Rams. We will leave it to the NFL to explain how this could happen and hope the next city that may experience what St. Louis has endured will enjoy a happier and more appropriate outcome." Nixon said the state would investigate the NFL's alleged violation of its guidelines. According to St. Louis-based KTVI-TV , Board of Alderman President said the city will "explore our options" to land another team. - - - - - - - Ben Rohrbach is a contributor for Ball Don't Lie and Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Tuesday's Sports In Brief (The Associated Press)
The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders might end up staying put, although the leadership of both teams didn't come close to making that commitment Tuesday night. A long day of votes and re-votes ended with 30 of 32 NFL owners approving Rams owner Stan Kroenke's ambitious plan to move his team from St. Louis to the site of the old Hollywood Park racetrack in Inglewood, California, about 10 miles from downtown LA. The Chargers have a yearlong option to join the Rams, followed by the Raiders if the San Diego franchise declines.

Column: Play ball with the NFL ... or else (The Associated Press)
As the clock ticked down towards a vote, the NFL Network breathlessly reported on the long line of luxury cars idling outside a suburban Houston hotel waiting to whisk the rich and powerful back to their private jets and onto the next important task. It was not the only time Tuesday's NFL owners' meeting resembled a meeting of old-line mafia families. Just minutes later, commissioner and sometimes-consigliere Roger Goodell arrived at the podium to announce the results of balloting on which of three teams - the St. Louis Rams, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders - won approval to tap the lucrative Los Angeles market.

LA ends its 21-year NFL drought with Rams' announced return (The Associated Press)
When the Rams announced their return to the Los Angeles area Tuesday night after 21 years away, hundreds of their long-faithful fans celebrated in the streets from downtown to Inglewood. Winning over the rest of the Southland's 18 1/2 million people is going to take a bit longer, but the Rams have a head start on rebuilding something special when they restore professional football to the nation's second-largest market this fall. The NFL officially approved the Rams to return to the city where they played for 49 years before leaving after the 1994 season, and Los Angeles should know soon whether the Chargers will join them this fall.

With Rams returning to LA, challenges abound for 3 NFL teams (The Associated Press)
The Rams belong to Los Angeles once again. The Chargers might be headed there, as well. What is certain is that all three franchises face serious challenges over the next few years now that the NFL has approved the relocation of the Rams from St. Louis, and given the Chargers a one-year option to join them in the nation's second-largest media market.

Raiders destination uncertain after NFL nixes LA move (Reuters)
(Reuters) - The Oakland Raiders are uncertain which city they will call home in 2016 after the failure of their bid to move back to Los Angeles, owner Mark Davis said on Tuesday. The franchise's lease at Oakland Coliseum, where they have played since moving north from Los Angeles 1995, has expired and the city has not expressed willingness to contribute public money for a new stadium. "We're trying to figure that out." He was speaking after NFL owners voted for the St. Louis Rams to move to Los Angeles, and also gave the San Diego Chargers an option to relocate as well, freezing out the Raiders and sending them back to the drawing board.

Chargers must decide between Inglewood or San Diego (The Associated Press)
The San Diego Chargers face a big decision: take the option to move to Los Angeles along with the Rams, or accept an extra $100 million from the NFL and try to work out a new stadium deal in San Diego. Team chairman Dean Spanos looked stunned at the decision by fellow owners to let the Rams move from St. Louis to Los Angeles. The Chargers walked away from negotiations with the city and county in June, instead focusing on a stadium they wanted to build in Carson with the rival Oakland Raiders.

Rams' L.A. move approved by NFL owners; Chargers in limbo (Shutdown Corner)
By a vote of 30-2, the NFL member clubs approved the long-anticipated move of the St. Louis Rams franchise to Los Angeles, a city that has been vacant by the league for more than 20 years. The franchise confirmed the move Tuesday night. Team owners met in Houston on Tuesday and approved Stan Kroenke's approval to move the Rams franchise to Inglewood, Calif. into a proposed $1.9 billion stadium. The Rams moved from Los Angeles following the 1994 season but now are moving back. The San Diego Chargers soon could join them. They have one year to negotiate a deal to move into a shared stadium. The meetings features a day's worth of presentations and negotiations, but ultimately the tandem of the Chargers and Oakland Raiders were denied their bid to enter into a shared stadium in Carson, Calif. Chargers owner Dean Spanos, after it became clear he didn't have the support in his co-bid, started to negotiate a deal with Kroenke, talks that reportedly are ongoing. The Rams — and the Chargers, if they come to a deal — will pay a relocation fee of a whopping $550 million. The Raiders are on the outside looking in, which is not surprising. It’s highly likely that the NFL will give the team concessions — either money for a new stadium locally or aid in relocating to another city. It’s likely some of the relocation money from the Rams and/or Chargers could be funneled to the Raiders for being left out in the cold. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Rams-only-to-L.A. possibility pulled off NFL owners' ballot (Shutdown Corner)
If the St. Louis Rams are going to move to Los Angeles, they'll have a roommate. As NFL owners continue to meet in Houston to discuss the future of the league in L.A., with the fate of three teams — the Rams, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders — hanging in the balance, one possibility has been eliminated, per multiple reports. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy: $10 could win you $20K in our $175K divisional-round contest ] The league's six-man ownership committee on Los Angeles has voted 5-1 to remove the option for the Rams to move by themselves to Inglewood. The other two possibilities still alive are the Rams and Chargers moving to Inglewood and the Chargers and Raiders moving to Carson. Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, a Show-Me State resident along with Rams owner Stan Kroenke, was the one vote against removing the Rams-only option. The owners might be posturing and hoping for a Rams-Chargers tandem in L.A., which hasn't had a team since the Rams and Raiders both bolted following the 1994 season, but they appear to be favoring the Carson plan right now. There is still a lot more to be decided, and Kroenke — who has appeared bent on leaving St. Louis — can't be happy with the early developments. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. NFL panel recommends Carson for proposed L.A. stadium (Reuters)
* L.A. has been without a team for 21 NFL seasons * Relocation requires support from 24 of 32 team owners (Adds details, background and dateline) By Ruthy Munoz HOUSTON, Jan 12 (Reuters) - A committee of National Football League owners recommended a proposal for a stadium in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson that is backed by the San Diego Chargers, the NFL said on Tuesday. The six-member committee's recommendation, which still requires a ratification vote by the league's 32 owners who are meeting in Houston to discuss the matter, comes as three NFL teams are seeking to relocate to the Los Angeles area. The recommendation of Carson over a rival proposal for a stadium in Inglewood backed by the St. Louis Rams would appear to favor the plan from the Chargers, who are interested in partnering with the Oakland Raiders to share the facility.

NFL owners committee recommends Raiders-Chargers for LA (AFP)
A six-member NFL owners committee recommended a stadium project in suburban Carson on Tuesday as the new Los Angeles-area home of the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders. The Chargers, Raiders and St. Louis Rams -- all of whom once played in Los Angeles -- are looking to return to the LA area in new stadiums and seek support from league owners at a special two-day meeting in Houston that ends on Wednesday. A report on the league's website confirmed committee support for the Carson plan, which would see the Raiders and Chargers both move into a new $1.7 billion (1.57 billion euros) venue rather than the Inglewood venue envisioned by Rams owner Stan Kroenke, a 70,000-seater arena that could run to $2 billion.

NFL poised for L.A. move after 20 years of hard bargaining with cities. (Reuters)
By Robin Respaut SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - With resistance mounting to public financing of sport stadiums, the National Football League this week aims to follow through on two decades of threats to relocate franchises to Los Angeles. Both teams, along with the Oakland Raiders, have applied for relocation to L.A., which because of its standing as one of the nation's largest media markets is still able to draw the interest of teams without big subsidies. The last of many teams to flirt with a move to Los Angeles - the Vikings - used the leverage to extract $500 million from Minnesota taxpayers in 2012.

D-day looms for NFL teams eyeing LA move (AFP)
The fate of three NFL teams hoping to relocate to Los Angeles is expected to be decided this week as team owners meet for a crucial vote which could end the sport's two-decade absence from the city. Three teams -- the St Louis Rams, the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders -- are all hoping to persuade the 32 owners of the NFL to vote in favour of their applications to move to Los Angeles. The most popular sport in America has been a notable absentee from the nation's second biggest media market since 1994, when the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Raiders played their last games in the city.

Rams franchise pushing for return to Los Angeles (Reuters)
Rams owner Stan Kroenke wants out of St. Louis, yearning to escape what he considers a poor economic climate with a return to the team's former longtime home of Los Angeles. Kroenke, who made a fortune in real estate, married into Wal-Mart family wealth, built a sports empire and took control of the club in 2010, has declared St. Louis unfit to support an NFL franchise after 21 seasons in the Gateway City. The Rams, Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers are vying to fill the void in the City of Angels left by the twin exits of the Rams and Raiders ahead of the 1995 season, with a decision expected at this week's NFL owners meeting in Houston.

NFL-A look at the St. Louis Rams (Reuters)
Here is a look at the National Football League's St. Louis Rams who, along with the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers, are looking to relocate to Los Angeles: - The franchise was founded as the Cleveland Rams in 1936, taking the nickname to honor the brand of football played at New York's Fordham University, who were nicknamed the Rams. - Moved to Los Angeles in 1946, where they remained until 1995, when frustration over an inability to get a new stadium built prompted the team to move to St. Louis. - The move to St. Louis filled a void in the Gateway City, which had been without an NFL team since the Cardinals' 1988 relocation to Arizona.

NFL-Rams franchise pushing for return to Los Angeles (Reuters)
By Larry Fine Jan 11 (Reuters) - Rams owner Stan Kroenke wants out of St.

NFL-Outdated stadium underpins Chargers' planned LA move (Reuters)
By Jahmal Corner Jan 11 (Reuters) - San Diego's beach city life, with its warm temperatures and thin air, has always been the perfect landing spot for the Chargers and their pass-happy offenses but that marriage is on the verge of a possible breakup after 54 years. The Chargers will learn if they are completing a much-anticipated relocation to Los Angeles later this week, at some point during two days of National Football League team owners' meetings in Houston. San Diego, along with the Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams, have applied for a move to the City of Angels but unlike the other two teams, who both previously played in that city, the Chargers have carved out an identity in their current home.

NFL-Raiders testing fan loyalty with relocation bid (Reuters)
By Frank Pingue Jan 11 (Reuters) - Oakland Raiders supporters are among the most passionate in the National Football League but their loyalty will be put to the ultimate test if the team win a bid to relocate to Los Angeles for the second time. With the Raiders and city of Oakland far apart regarding stadium plans, team owner Mark Davis is looking to move his team to the second largest market in the United States as part of a joint proposal with the San Diego Chargers. "I think the Raiders feel like they have the most transportable fans in any sport," Robert Boland, director of the MBA and master's sports administration program at Ohio University, told Reuters.

Blair Walsh and the 10 worst FG misses in NFL playoff history (Shutdown Corner)
"It's a chip shot," said Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer. "He's got to make it." That about sums up Vikings kicker Blair Walsh's 27-yard field goal that hooked left and handed the Seattle Seahawks a 10-9 win with 22 seconds remaining in their wild-card round playoff game on Sunday. Minnesota star Adrian Peterson, whose fourth-quarter fumble set up Seattle's go-ahead field goal, attempted to take the blame, as did placeholder Jeff Locke for his Dan Marino-esque "laces out" mistake. "I've got to spin it," Locke told reporters in the aftermath. "Simple as that." But Walsh knew where the blame would ultimately lie. Nearly a quarter-century after the release of "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," there's a reason we remember fictional field goal kicker Ray Finkle's name. Give him credit, though, a teary-eyed Walsh answered every reporter's query with remarkable perspective. "It's so quick that I don't know what happened," said Walsh. "You have to go back and look at the film, but I can tell you this: It's my fault. I don't care whether you give me a watermelon hold, I should be able to put that one through. Jeff did his job, (long snapper) Kevin (McDermott) did his job; I'm the only one who didn't do his job. That's on me." Undoubtedly, Walsh's miss ranks among the 10 worst in NFL playoff history. The only question is where. 10. 2009 AFC divisional round : Jets 17, San Diego Chargers 14. While he never actually had a field goal attempt to win the game, Nate Kaeding's three misses still sealed San Diego's fate. Granted, his second miss as time expired on the first half came from 57 yards, but Kaeding sandwiched misses from 36 and 40 yards around it — either of which would have at least given a heavily-favored Chargers team a chance to reach its second conference title game in three years. 9. 2002 NFC wild-card round : San Francisco 49ers 39, New York Giants 38. With six seconds remaining, a 41-year-old Trey Junkin — signed by the Giants as a replacement long snapper off the street that week — botched his snap to placeholder Matt Allen before Matt Bryant ever got a chance to kick a 40-yarder, and New York couldn't erase a blown 24-point lead against the 49ers. 8. 2006 NFC wild-card round : Seattle Seahawks 21, Dallas Cowboys 20. Oh, no, Tony Romo. The Cowboys quarterback, serving as a placeholder on Martin Gramatica's 19-yard field goal attempt with 1:19 remaining, couldn't corral L.P. Ladoceur's snap and took off running for the end zone, only to be barely tripped up by Seahawks safety Jordan Babineaux at the 2-yard line. 7. 2015 NFC wild-card round : Seahawks 10, Vikings 9. On one of the coldest days in NFL history, Walsh iced himself. "It's just ridiculous," he said Sunday. "You have to do much better than that and I didn't." At least the stakes weren't even higher, and at least he didn't miss multiple attempts to win the game. Those are the only things that kept him low on this list. 6. 2005 AFC divisional round : Pittsburgh Steelers 21, Indianapolis Colts 18. In a wild final five minutes, when the Steelers seemingly had the game won before a Jerome Bettis fumble gave Peyton Manning one final opportunity, Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt missed a game-tying attempt from 46 yards out with 21 seconds left. He hadn't missed in the RCA Dome since October. A few days later, Vanderjagt — who Manning was called the " idiot kicker " — appearend on David Letterman, successfully kicking a 46-yard field goal outside the studio as Letterman held. Vanderjagt was soon cut. 5. 2004 AFC divisional round : Steelers 20, New York Jets 17 (OT). Jets kicker Doug Brien's misses from 47 and 43 yards in the final two minutes of regulation — the latter of which came with four seconds left — resulted in this quote from Steelers linebacker Larry Foote after an overtime win: "I've never seen anything like it. I'm not going to say it was a miracle, because that's crippled people getting up and walking, the blind seeing. But that's the closest thing to it I've ever seen." 4. 1995 AFC divisional round : Colts 10, Kansas City Chiefs 7. Chiefs kicker Lin Elliott pulled a Kaeding, only worse. The Chiefs, owners of the AFC's No. 1 seed and an undefeated home record, survived Elliott misses from 35 yards in the second quarter and 39 yards with 10:36 remaining in the fourth quarter, setting him up for a third-time's-a-charm attempt from 42 yards to tie the game with 42 seconds left. Strike three. Elliott was out, as K.C. waived him shortly thereafter. 3. 2011 AFC championship : New England Patriots 23, Baltimore Ravens 20. Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff didn't just miss a game-tying field goal attempt from 32 yards with 11 seconds left. He might've missed it by 32 yards, sending the Patriots to the Super Bowl. A year removed from his Pro Bowl selection, the Ravens released Cundiff that offseason. They won the Super Bowl the next year. 2. Super Bowl XXV : New York Giants 20, Buffalo Bills 19. Arguably the inspiration for Finkle, Scott Norwood's 1991 miss with eight seconds left against the Giants is certainly the most memorable of all field goal follies, and Buffalo's four straight Super Bowl losses didn't help erase the memory. But was his wide-right miss the worst in NFL history? It definitely had the most riding on it, but considering his leg strength, Norwood's miss from 47 yards was hardly a sure thing. 1. 1998 NFC championship : Atlanta Falcons 30, Vikings 27 (OT). Speaking of sure things, hello, Gary Anderson. The Vikings were sporting a 16-1 record and a 27-20 lead with 2:07 remaining, when Anderson and his perfect season (39-39 FGs, 67-67 extra points) lined up for a 38-yard field goal to put the game on ice and send Minnesota to the Super Bowl. Only Anderson missed it. The Falcons tied the game on their ensuing possession, and Morten Andersen made his 38-yarder for Atlanta in overtime. At least Walsh can take solace in the thought that his miss wasn't even the worst in Vikings history, even if that's not much consolation for Minnesotans who sat through the frigid cold for another tough loss. - - - - - - - Ben Rohrbach is a contributor for Ball Don't Lie and Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Questions about possible move hang over Raiders (The Associated Press)
Heading into the offseason with uncertainty is old hat for the Oakland Raiders, who have had nine head coaches and 17 starting quarterbacks during a 13-year stretch of no winning record or playoff berths. With quarterback Derek Carr and coach Jack Del Rio entrenched in their positions, the questions this offseason surround whether the team will play in Oakland or in the Los Angeles area next year. ''We'll all find out at the same time,'' Carr said Monday.

NFL-Manning rises from bench to set up possible Super Bowl run (Reuters)
By Larry Fine Jan 4 (Reuters) - Peyton Manning rode the bench before riding to the rescue for the Denver Broncos on Sunday in what might set up an enthralling run to the Super Bowl in the twilight of the quarterback's extraordinary career. Manning has battled through injuries, a diminishment of his already marginal ability to move, and a loss of throwing power that had some NFL observers wondering if the Broncos might be better off playing back-up quarterback Brock Osweiler. Before his reappearance against the San Diego Chargers, Manning had thrown 17 interceptions and nine touchdown passes.

Mike McCoy is a Black Monday survivor, he'll be back with Chargers (Shutdown Corner)
Firing Mike McCoy would have been one of those moves NFL teams mindlessly make just because they feel a losing season must result in a fired head coach. The Chargers went 4-12 this season with a ton of injuries all over the roster, and many thought McCoy might get fired. Not so fast. The San Diego Union-Tribune's Mike Gehlken reported that McCoy was informed Monday he is safe for another season as Chargers coach. That doesn't mean there won't be big changes for the Chargers, who might be moving the whole franchise this offseason. Staff changes are expected, Gehlken said, because apparently someone has to take the fall for a 4-12 season even though the Chargers finished the season with 15 players on injured reserve. The Chargers lost some close games and competed hard until the end, when they led the Denver Broncos in the fourth quarter of the season finale. Things might have been different with some better injury luck. McCoy did go 9-7 in each of his first two seasons. This is the season for NFL teams to overreact to losing seasons and completely change the course of the franchise. The Chargers didn't want to do that. They believed in McCoy three years ago when they hired him, and an injury-ravaged season didn't change that. Continuity at head coach might be good for the Chargers, considering the location of the franchise might be changing. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. LA's NFL fans have unified hope, divided loyalties (The Associated Press)
The NFL has never been closer to ending its 21-year absence from the city that staged the first Super Bowl and supported several teams in several leagues through several decades of professional football. Several hundred Rams fans - and a few Raiders and Chargers fans, too - gathered outside the venerable stadium last weekend under slate-gray skies that made for perfect football weather. ''We really can't believe it's almost time for this to end,'' lifelong Rams fan Ray Ochoa said.

Third-coldest game in NFL history, Vikings' Bud Grant doesn't care (Shutdown Corner)
Of course the Minnesota Vikings brought out coaching legend Bud Grant before their painfully cold playoff game Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. And of course he came out in short sleeves. It was minus-6 degrees at kickoff, with a wild chill of minus-25. Seriously, what a legend. The cold is nothing for legendary head coach Bud Grant. http://pic.twitter.com/gGILB7qdKx — Minnesota Vikings (@Vikings) January 10, 2016 Grant is 88. It's amazing a man his age is even at the stadium, much less strolling across the ice pond of a field in a polo shirt. When's your tee time, coach? He led the Vikings to 158 regular-season victories and 10 more in the postseason (including four unsuccessful trips to the Super Bowl) with the franchise between 1967 and 1985, and the majority of the games in Minnesota came in outdoor Metropolitan Stadium. Often, temperatures dropped well below freezing the later it got in the season. Sunday's game was ruled the coldest in franchise history and the third-coldest in league history behind the famous "Ice Bowl" on New Year's Eve, 1967 and the "Freezer Bowl" in 1982 between the San Diego Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC championship game. Updated list of comfiest games in NFL history. http://pic.twitter.com/3O6hEVpU9J — Bob Condotta (@bcondotta) January 10, 2016 You almost get the idea Grant was a bit upset he wasn't coaching in this one. So he showed everyone just how much the weather bothered him: not a dang bit, apparently. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Vikings agony as Seahawks squeeze through in NFL playoff showdown (AFP)
Minnesota Vikings kicker Blair Walsh missed a straightforward last-gasp field goal as the Seattle Seahawks overcame sub-zero conditions to win 10-9 and set up an NFL playoff showdown with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Walsh, who had drilled three harder field goals to put the Vikings 9-0 ahead earlier in the game, looked set to clinch a dramatic victory as he stepped up for a 27-yard three-pointer with 26 seconds left.

NFL owners to pick winners, losers in L.A. relocation bids (Reuters)
By Mark Lamport-Stokes LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - With the National Football League poised to award Los Angeles a team - and maybe two - owners also face the delicate task of picking at least one loser. Three franchises - the St. Louis Rams, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders - applied on Monday to relocate, the first time any team has formally requested to fill the L.A. vacancy since the Raiders and Rams left the region in 1995. The owners likely will green-light at least one relocation this week, sports business experts say.

City stadium proposals 'unsatisfactory', says Goodell (Reuters)
(Reuters) - National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell gave the three teams seeking a move to Los Angeles a boost on Saturday, saying they had been given "inadequate and unsatisfactory" stadium proposals to remain in their markets. The St. Louis Rams, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders applied on Monday to relocate, the first time any team has formally requested to fill the L.A. vacancy since the Raiders and Rams left the region in 1995. NFL team owners will gather for special meetings in Houston on Tuesday and Wednesday in a bid to resolve the issue, but at least 24 of the 32 owners must vote to approve a move to the second largest market in the United States.
