The beating Andrew Luck has taken this season on the field is taking a toll. Coach Chuck Pagano decided to give Luck most of Wednesday's practice off so he could rest his sore throwing shoulder. Pagano said it was only a precaution and that he expects Luck to play Sunday against Jacksonville.

Browns-Chargers Preview (The Associated Press)
Multiple Cleveland Browns have denied a report that there's dissension in the locker room over whether Johnny Manziel or Josh McCown should be the starting quarterback. Coach Mike Pettine knows where the fans' allegiance lies after hearing chants for Manziel last week, but he wouldn't be surprised if his players had differing opinions on the topic. Despite Manziel having led the Browns to their only victory and McCown being banged up, Pettine remains committed to starting McCown in Sunday's road matchup with the San Diego Chargers.

Ravens intend to stage historic comeback from 0-3 start (The Associated Press)
Having reached the playoffs in six of the past seven years, the Baltimore Ravens are generally considered to be among the NFL elite. The Ravens entered the season with designs on winning their third Super Bowl, but after starting 0-3 they're going to have to buck history to reach the playoffs. In spite of this, Baltimore remains optimistic that the hole it has dug is not too deep to quash its chances of playing meaningful games in January.

FANTASY PLAYS: With bye weeks here, 5 TE options in fantasy (The Associated Press)
Anyone with a tight end on a bye week can attest to how agonizingly difficult it can be to find a suitable replacement, especially in a season where no one at the position besides Rob Gronkowski is really setting the world on fire. In past years, fantasy players could count on Julius Thomas, Jimmy Graham and Antonio Gates for double-digit touchdowns. Sure, there have been some solid performances from players like Greg Olsen and Travis Kelce, and Graham is starting to show some signs of life in Seattle.

NFL Power Rankings: Cowboys, Steelers need to survive (Shutdown Corner)
The Pittsburgh Steelers have entered that strange space where they're just hoping to survive for six weeks or so. The Dallas Cowboys already lived in that space. The Steelers will be without Ben Roethlisberger for a reported 4-6 weeks. Tony Romo is out for the Cowboys, on injured reserve/designated to return and not able to play again until Week 11. So, if you're deciding to rank all the NFL teams, how do you rank those two teams? We have a better idea what to expect from the Cowboys because we've seen them once. And now we know that, since Brandon Weeden refuses to throw more than 10 yards downfield, teams can just stack the box against the run. The Atlanta Falcons seemed to figure that out pretty quickly after a slow start, and they won going away in the second half. The Steelers are really a mystery. It makes little sense why they signed Michael Vick to back up Roethlisberger when they're styles are nothing alike. But, there weren't many options for the Steelers in late August when they signed Vick. So now the Steelers have to figure out an offense that suits Vick, who hasn't played well since 2010. At least he has good players around him. if you're ranking these teams on what they are now, neither can be very high. Nobody fears Weeden's Cowboys or Vick's Steelers. But both teams are also likely going to get their quarterbacks back with plenty of time to go in the season, and they were both top-10 teams with their quarterbacks. I think both will survive. I don't think the Cowboys will be great without Romo, but I don't trust any other NFC East team to take advantage. I think the Steelers, with all that offensive talent, can figure out a way to squeeze out a few wins until Roethlisberger returns. I don't think we've heard the last of either team. They'll be good when their quarterbacks return, it's just a question of what situation they find themselves in when that happens. Here are Shutdown Corner's power rankings after Week 3: 32. Chicago Bears (0-3, Last week: 32) I think it's smart for them to have a fire sale . They know who they are, and there's no use fooling themselves into thinking they can win 10 of 13 from here on out. But it's odd they didn't have that big picture in mind when they should have found a way to trade a certain quarterback in January or February. 31. New Orleans Saints (0-3, LW: 31) Another team is having to apologize for not getting C.J. Spiller the ball enough. I don't know, perhaps there's another reason this keeps happening other than multiple coaching staffs simply forgetting to get Spiller the ball week after week. 30. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-2, LW: 29) It's hard to build momentum when you follow up what looked like a solid win against the Dolphins by giving up 51 points at New England. 29. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-2, LW: 30)

Tight end Eric Ebron still believes his Detroit Lions are 'great' (they aren't) (Shutdown Corner)
Following a 24-12 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday night, Detroit Lions tight end Eric Ebron maintains his team is "great. While it might seem like Ebron doesn't realize the Lions are 0-3, he does. This is what he told the Detroit Free Press after corralling four catches for 61 yards in defeat on Sunday: "I mean, I'm surprised, yeah, because of the players and how great we are, how good we look every day," he said. "So I'm really surprised. But it's the NFL. A few mistakes can make you 3-0 or 0-3. I mean, we're 0-3 because of the mistakes we've been having and the mental errors and things like that. So we've just got to continue to work hard and get better." [...] "Yeah, that's why we're 0-3," he said. "We're hurting ourselves. No one in this league can match us or play against us unless we hurt ourselves. And we've been doing that for three straight weeks. So we'll get better at it." Let's remember that only five teams in NFL history have ever made the playoffs after an 0-3 start. Considering the Lions visit the defending champion Seattle Seahawks and host the undefeated Arizona Cardinals in the next two weeks, things aren't going to get any easier for Detroit anytime soon. The Lions own the worst running game in the NFL (their 135 total rushing yards and 2.6 yards per carry both rank dead last). They c urrently rank 25th in total yards and 24th in points scored after losses to the San Diego Chargers, Minnesota Vikings and Broncos. None of those losses are all that bad, especially since the first two came on the road. And their defense has been decent, allowing 56 points through three weeks. That number looks even more impressive when you consider Detroit's eight turnovers are tied with the San Diego Chargers for the league's second-most through three weeks — behind only the Indianapolis Colts' 10. So, Ebron certainly isn't wrong about the Lions shooting themselves in the foot. But when Ebron says, "because of the players and how great we are," he's probably referencing Detroit's three returning Pro Bowl performers on offense — quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receivers Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate, only one of whom should ever be classified as great (Johnson). And when he says, "No one in this league can match us or play against us unless we hurt ourselves," he's ignoring that there's another team on the other sideline contributing to all those turnovers and losses. For what it's worth, Ebron has been a solid third option behind Johnson and Tate in the passing game this season, catching a touchdown pass in each of his first two games of the season. In fact, his two TDs are one more than that wideout duo has combined to score thus far. Stafford's five picks haven't helped. Still, if the Lions are going to return to the playoffs this season, it will be on Stafford, Johnson and Tate to carry the load on offense. They only have to look to the 1995 Lions for inspiration, as that group was one of the five teams to make the postseason after starting 0-3, thanks to Herman Moore and Brett Perriman each submitting a 1,000-yard receiving season. Of course, they also had a dude named Barry Sanders. Regardless, the Lions aren't great. They haven't been since the 1950s. So maybe start with getting good. Can the Pittsburgh Steelers tread water until Ben Roethlisberger returns? (Shutdown Corner)
The Pittsburgh Steelers survived Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams with a 2-1 record, despite losing Ben Roethlisberger to a sprained MCL , but can they tread water long enough for their two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback to return from the injury in 4-6 weeks and lead them back to the playoffs? The Steelers face a difficult road for the next five weeks before midseason home games against the Oakland Raiders and Cleveland Browns offer a respite leading into their Week 11 bye. Beginning with Thursday's quick turnaround in an always tough game against the AFC North rival Baltimore Ravens — even if they are 0-3 — Pittsburgh then travels to San Diego for a Monday night showdown against the Chargers, hosts the unbeaten Arizona Cardinals, faces the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium and welcomes the undefeated Cincinnati Bengals to town. That's not an easy stretch, even with a healthy Roethlisberger. Instead, the Steelers will be embarking on that road with a 35-year-old Michael Vick for the next month and a half. Considering Vick owns a 6-14 record as a starting quarterback since 2012, that could be a problem. Over his previous three seasons on the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets, he has completed 56.3 percent of his passes for 20 touchdowns against 15 interceptions and a measly 78.1 quarterback rating. Those numbers would rank Vick among the worst five quarterbacks in the league this season. Then again, those were the Jets and Eagles, and these are the Steelers — a well-run organization with one losing season this century that has consistently been counted among Super Bowl contenders since 2001. Pittsburgh's defense has allowed 15 points per game through three weeks this season, and that includes an opening-night loss to a New England Patriots team that leads the NFL in yards and touchdowns. Likewise, the Steelers returned All-Pro running back Le'Veon Bell to a backfield that also features DeAngelo Williams, who rushed for 204 yards and three scores on 41 carries (4.9 yards per carry) during Bell's two-game suspension. In other words, the Steelers are equipped to win games with more than Roethlisberger's arm. Vick should benefit from a wide receiver corps headlined by returning All-Pro selection Antonio Bryant. With an ever-improving Markus Wheaton also in the mix and Martavis Bryant returning in Week 5 from his four-game suspension , the question, as always with Vick, will be his throwing accuracy and health. Injury-prone even before missing two seasons in his prime for a dog-fighting conviction, he has battled concussion, rib, hamstring and quadriceps injuries in recent years, forcing him to become more of a pocket passer of late. Otherwise, the Steelers might have to turn to Oklahoma product Landry Jones, the team's third-string QB who's taken exactly zero snaps since being drafted by Pittsburgh in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. The biggest thing the Steelers have going for them, though, is the fact they play in the AFC — a conference that might struggle to find six decent teams to fill out the playoff picture this winter. Working under the assumption that the Patriots, Bengals, Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts are still the favorites to win their divisions, that leaves two wild-card spots up for grabs. Outside of the Buffalo Bills, no other AFC team has looked all that formidable through the first three weeks of the regular season. It's still early, and things change rapidly in the NFL, but if the Steelers can steal two of their next five games — starting Thursday against the winless Ravens — and make it through Week 8 with a .500 record, then a playoff berth isn't out of the question. Of course, Roethlisberger must find his rhythm again before an onslaught of the Seattle Seahawks, Colts, Bengals and Broncos hits him from Weeks 12-15. - - - - - - - Ben Rohrbach is a contributor for Ball Don't Lie and Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. NFL Winners and Losers: Cincinnati Bengals, Super Bowl contenders (Shutdown Corner)
OK, we’ve been down this road with the Cincinnati Bengals before. They look good, the roster looks fantastic, but we all know they will disappoint in January. I don't think that will happen this season. The Cincinnati Bengals are very good, and they need to be stamped as legitimate Super Bowl contenders. Dismiss the Bengals if you wish, but they’re for real. If anyone is going to stop the New England Patriots train in the AFC, it’s the Bengals, unless the Denver Broncos somehow get their offense to play near the same level as their fine defense. Who is the second-best team in the AFC? The Baltimore Ravens are 0-3. The Buffalo Bills look fine, but if you’re eliminating the Bengals because they haven’t won in January, then Buffalo’s not your team either. The Indianapolis Colts really exciting you? Is it really the Broncos, who came into Week 3 with the least efficient offense in the NFL? The Bengals went on the road in Week 1 and beat the Oakland Raiders. Oakland is 2-0 since. The last two weeks Cincinnati beat the San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Ravens, two teams that posted winning records last season. Their resume after three weeks is strong. And with the Pittsburgh Steelers missing Ben Roethlisberger for at least four-to-five, or maybe six weeks (that’s “at least” … I think the Steelers would happily sign up for five or six weeks right now), the Bengals have a great shot to build a big lead in the AFC North.

Report: Big Ben to miss at least four weeks with knee injury (Shutdown Corner)
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger went down midway through the third quarter with a left knee injury in the Steelers' victory against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday, an injury that is expected to keep the quarterback out for at least four weeks, ESPN reported. He was carted off and didn't return to the game. He limped out of the stadium on crutches, which ESPN's Josina Anderson captured in this tweet: Here is video of Ben Roethlisberger on crutches. #Steelers http://pic.twitter.com/h7aCKryhZx — Josina Anderson (@JosinaAnderson) September 27, 2015 The Steelers do not know the extent of the injury but are hopeful that Roethliberger's ACL remains intact. He will have an MRI on Monday in Pittsburgh. ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted: Ben Roethlisberger expected to miss at least 4 weeks with knee injury, source tells ESPN. He will undergo an MRI Monday; hoping ACL intact. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) September 27, 2015 Roethlisberger was sacked by safety Mark Barron, who came flying in on a blitz and hit Roethlisberger low and took him down for a 6-yard loss on third down with the Steelers leading 9-3. Roethlisberger remained down on the turf for a few minutes while being looked at by Steelers trainers. Barron was not penalized, but Fox's Mike Pereira said he believed it should have been called a personal foul for a low hit. The hit was somewhat reminiscent of Carson Palmer being sacked years ago in a playoff game for the Cincinnati Bengals in a loss to the Steelers on which Palmer suffered a torn ACL. NFL rules have been changed since then to protect quarterbacks from dangerously low hits. Michael Vick, the Steelers' backup quarterback, made his 2015 debut in replacing Roethlisberger. He went 5-for-6 for 38 yards and took two sacks. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Email him at edholm@yahoo-inc.com or follow him on Twitter! MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Adrian Peterson plowed through San Diego's defense for 126 yards and two touchdowns on 20 rushes in three quarters on Sunday, and the Minnesota Vikings trampled Philip Rivers and the injury-depleted Chargers 31-14.

Here's how long it really was between Adrian Peterson touchdowns (Shutdown Corner)
Remarkably, it had been 672 days since the NFL's best running back scored a touchdown. After 134 carries without reaching paydirt, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson snapped his scoreless streak with a 2-yard touchdown run that gave Minnesota a 10-0 second-quarter lead against San Diego. Previously, his last score came on a 1-yard run in a 26-26 tie against Green Bay on Nov. 24, 2013. Of course, the biggest reason Peterson hadn't scored in so long was the child abuse allegations that led to his suspension for the remainder of the year after Week 1 of the 2014 season. It wasn't lost on anybody that Peterson's wife gave birth to another son, Axyl Eugene Peterson, hours before his TD on Sunday morning. Adrian Peterson's wife Ashley told me in June this child would be Adrian's seventh overall. Second with her. — Chris Tomasson (@christomasson) September 27, 2015 By halftime on Sunday, Peterson was on pace for a second straight 100-yard game. Between touchdowns, he had rushed for 573 yards without a score. Other things that have happened since his last TD: — The Apple Watch and iPhone 6 were launched. — Sharknado 2 came out. — Justin Bieber was arrested a handful of times. — Dennis Rodman befriended Kim Jong-Un. — Russia hosted a disastrous Olympics. — Taco Bell released a breakfast menu. — Your niece sang "Let It Go" roughly 35,826 times. — LeBron James returned to Cleveland. — Derek Jeter retired. — George Clooney got married. — Uber made $40 billion. — We learned about Adnan Syed on "Serial." — Kim Kardashian broke the Internet. I'm not sure how we survived between TDs. Fantasy owners can rest easy now. It's safe to keep Peterson on your roster. Now, excuse me while I go scream into a pillow again for drafting him No. 1 overall last year. - - - - - - - Ben Rohrbach is a contributor for Ball Don't Lie and Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. The Latest: Rams LB Laurinaitis passes Merlin Olsen (The Associated Press)
Anytime you can best Merlin Olsen on the football field is noteworthy. Rams middle linebacker James Laurinaitis is now in elite company, becoming the franchise's career leading tackler after surpassing the late Hall of Famer when he dragged down Le'Veon Bell following a 20-yard gain in the first quarter. The Dallas running game is finally moving without DeMarco Murray.

NFL against the spread picks: Who is desperate in Week 3? (Shutdown Corner)
In the NFL, an 0-2 start isn't a death sentence for making the playoffs. But if you start 0-3, you might as well forget the postseason. Since the playoffs expanded to 12 teams in 1990, about 12 percent of 0-2 teams have made the playoffs. But only three — the 1992 San Diego Chargers, 1995 Detroit Lions and 1998 Buffalo Bills — have made the playoffs after starting 0-3. So to the 0-2 teams, you better win this week or you're done. They know that. And we should keep it in mind while making picks. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football: Enter our $1 Million Week 3 contest ] Not all 0-2 teams are created equal. Some just stink and it doesn't matter if they're desperate for a win this week. But for the 0-2 teams we still have hope for, this is a mini-playoff game in September. That thought process worked for picking the New York Giants on Thursday night. So let's get to the picks, and see who really needs a win: Giants (-4) over Redskins ( picked Thursday ): I'm not sold on the Giants being good. I am sold on the Redskins not being good. Browns (-3.5) over Raiders: Not a game I feel strongly about either way. But the Raiders are 2-22 on the road the last three seasons. I'll keep rolling with that trend until I see a reason to change. Falcons (-2) over Cowboys: Dallas' running backs haven't been good yet. Now that's all they have for a couple months. It wouldn't shock me if the running game clicks on Sunday and puts up a huge week, but I want to see it happen first.

Chargers visit to Vikings reminds Peterson of rushing record (The Associated Press)
Halfway into his rookie season, Adrian Peterson had passed the 200-yard mark for a second time. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Minnesota Vikings held a four-point lead over the San Diego Chargers. As a bonus, San Diego's Antonio Cromartie returned a failed field goal 109 yards for a touchdown right before halftime.

Falcons favored at Dallas? You bet (The Associated Press)
Betting lines don't usually surprise NFL observers. The Falcons already have wins over the NFC East's Eagles and Giants, and their turnaround easily could continue against the Cowboys, who won't have injured Tony Romo or Dez Bryant, suspended Rolando McClain and Greg Hardy, and might also be missing star tight end Jason Witten. Not that anyone in Atlanta is getting overconfident, even with the vast improvement the Falcons have made under new coach Dan Quinn.

Versatile Mike Harris has been big help for Vikings (The Associated Press)
Mike Harris has been a major asset for Minnesota's offensive line. Harris was a tackle in college at UCLA who lined up on different sides from snap to snap, so he came with experience at switching spots. When the Vikings claimed him off waivers last season from San Diego, Harris became the primary backup tackle and started the last five games on the right side after Phil Loadholt was hurt.

Pats' Gronkowski earns strong praise from Belichick (The Associated Press)
Bill Belichick says there's a whole lot more to tight end Rob Gronkowski than catching passes, end zone spikes and TV commercials. Asked why, Belichick said, ''Probably other than the quarterback, the tight end position on our offense is the hardest to play because you have all the protections, all the running game and you have routes from sideline to the middle of the field to occasionally even in the backfield. ''His work ethic, his ability to work with his teammates, whether it's the quarterback, the offensive tackles, the other tight ends or even with the defensive players is good.

Browns switch back to McCown as starter over Manziel (The Associated Press)
The Browns started the season with a quarterback plan: Josh McCown is the starter, Johnny Manziel is his backup. McCown was cleared from the NFL's concussion protocol Wednesday to practice and will start against Oakland, moving back into the lineup ahead of Manziel, who threw two touchdown passes and led the Browns to their first win on Sunday. Browns coach Mike Pettine said he considered several factors into account, but that his final decision was based on one thing.

NFL Power Rankings: How did the Chicago Bears sink to the bottom? (Shutdown Corner)
There is a group of certain teams you expect to be the worst in the NFL at any certain time. The Chicago Bears are not a regular member of that group. So you can't imagine the Bears will stay in the basement too long. But they're there now. Right now, the Bears are the worst team in the NFL. You could maybe argue the worst team is the New Orleans Saints (especially if the Drew Brees news ends up being really bad), the New York Giants or one of the one-loss teams that normally inhabits that "worst team" group we know and love. But the Bears have earned the No. 32 spot. Their minus-33 point differential is 12 points worse than anyone else. They have played two tough teams, but both were at home and they trailed in each by at least 15 points. It's doubtful it gets much better in Week 3 at the Seattle Seahawks. Quarterback Jay Cutler's injury doesn't matter much either; he's not the answer, just like Jimmy Clausen isn't the answer. The Bears' ineptitude isn't new, either. Chicago was one of the two or three worst teams in the NFL by the end of last season, when it was clear Marc Trestman would be fired. How did it get this bad? How is it possible that there isn't one blue-chip player on defense except maybe pass rusher Pernell McPhee? Cornerback Kyle Fuller, the 2014 first-round pick, is getting torched by the media and fans after two weeks, the inside linebackers don't intimidate anyone, and you can argue the second- and third-best defensive players are 32-year-old safety Antrel Rolle and 33-year-old pass rusher Jared Allen. That's not good for a team that never was a candidate to compete for a playoff spot. Bad drafts have hurt. Guard Kyle Long and receiver Alshon Jeffery were good picks, but the last five drafts are really thin on impact players, or even solid contributors. The last two drafts do look a little more promising, however. Most of the recent free-agent additions have been band-aid players who are 30 or older and not potential foundation players (McPhee and tight end Martellus Bennett are exceptions). Having the general manager/coach combination of Phil Emery and Trestman fail after just two seasons set the franchise back. And Cutler's contract isn't the only problem but it is a problem. You can't pay a quarterback like he's a Pro Bowler and have him be below average every year. They'd have been better off sticking with Josh McCown for a fraction of the price in 2014 and using him as a bridge until a draft pick was ready, while pumping the cap savings into the defense. How much better off would the Bears be now if they would have let Cutler walk and then drafted Teddy Bridgewater or Derek Carr instead of Fuller? The Bears got stuck in the NFL's middle class and couldn't admit they should rebuild. That approach hasn't even resulted in a playoff appearance since a loss to the Green Bay Packers in the NFC title game at the end of the 2010 season. The Cutler extension was the sign of a team that didn't have much clarity or self-awareness. Either they truly (and wrongly) believed they were a contender or were just too paralyzed by fear of the unknown to start over. Either way, the roster decayed and it has led to this: The once-proud Bears are the worst team in the NFL at this moment. You'd think that the Bears won't be very bad for long, because they never are, but rebuilds take a long time and it seems like the Bears just started. Only two teams in the NFL had an older roster last season, and they're just the 19th youngest roster this season, according to PhillyVoice.com . All Bears fans can hope is their stay at the bottom doesn't last too long. Here are Shutdown Corner's power rankings after Week 2: 32. Chicago Bears (0-2, Last week: 28) Simple question for Bears fans: What about this team gives you any hope moving forward to 2016 and beyond?

McCoy defends decision not to use timeouts before halftime (The Associated Press)
Chargers coach Mike McCoy is defending his decision not to use his final two timeouts at the end of the first half of Sunday's loss at Cincinnati and at least get the ball back and take a few shots down the field. The Chargers trailed 14-6 at the time and ended up losing 24-19 in a game in which they had three turnovers, some foolish penalties, got pushed around on both sides of the ball and failed to sack Andy Dalton.

Stafford's health a concern as Lions head into home opener (The Associated Press)
The Detroit Lions haven't played a home game yet, and already they've lost twice and watched their quarterback get knocked around to the point where his status this week is in some question. Matthew Stafford was in the locker room Monday, but he wouldn't comment to reporters on any injuries after last weekend's loss to Minnesota. Stafford had X-rays on his chest and ribs after that game, and his health is obviously a concern as Detroit prepares for Sunday night's home opener against Denver.

Another QB down? Drew Brees reportedly could miss some games (Shutdown Corner)
What we saw from Drew Brees on Sunday was so out of line with what we've seen from him the rest of his New Orleans Saints career, it was clear something was wrong. And there was a good reason his passes against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had no zip and he had trouble getting the ball downfield. Brees had a shoulder injury, we learned after the game. On Monday, we learned it might be a lot worse than a one-week problem. Brees could miss "several games," according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport . Saints coach Sean Payton said it's too early to say if Brees will miss any time. “Well, I think it’s early right now,” Payton said, according to ESPN.com . “Today’s the day after, and we’ll take a peek and see how he’s feeling, coming along and see where we’re at Wednesday." Brees is tough, and didn't leave Sunday's game despite being hurt. Brees signed with the Saints in 2006 and has not missed one game since then due to injury (he sat out the 2009 regular-season finale as a precaution). That streak could end this week. Brees could join Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo as big-name stars to miss time with injuries. The Cowboys and Saints play on Oct. 4. The Saints are obviously in a bad spot if Brees misses time. They're 0-2 already. So much of the Saints' success the last decade has been built around Brees and coach Sean Payton leading a great offense. Luke McCown would likely be up next, although rookie quarterback Garrett Grayson is also an option. If the injury is really serious, one has to wonder how it would affect the 36-year-old Brees going forward. Brees came back from one shoulder injury, suffered during his last game with the San Diego Chargers, but it might not be so easy at the back end of his career. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Running back Jeremy Hill stood at the end of the bench with his helmet on, watching his backup lead Cincinnati to another win. It was another reminder of the depth in the Bengals' offense. Giovani Bernard - who lost the starting job to Hill last season - got the bulk of the plays in the second half and ran for 123 yards overall.

Matt Jones, Alf Morris give Skins rare '1-2 punch' on ground (The Associated Press)
By adding rookie Matt Jones to dependable veteran Alfred Morris, the Washington Redskins have created an unusual two-back rushing attack. With Jones running for 123 yards in Week 2, after Morris gained 121 yards in Week 1, the Redskins are the first NFL team since the 2006 San Diego Chargers to have two backs each gain at least 100 yards on the ground in a season's first two games. ''To have that solid, 1-2 punch - and both of those guys are so much alike - keeps the pressure on the defense,'' Redskins left tackle Trent Williams said.

With Peterson 'back home,' Vikings top Lions 26-16 (The Associated Press)
After his first game in front of a pro-Vikings crowd in 658 days, though, Peterson was reminded where he belonged. With 192 total yards that trumped a rash of second-half fumbles, Peterson relished his return and propelled the Vikings to a 26-16 victory Sunday over the Detroit Lions. Balanced Bengals offense sets up 24-19 win over Chargers (The Associated Press)
The Bengals weren't about to let it happen again. Andy Dalton threw three touchdown passes - each to a different receiver - and Giovani Bernard ran for 123 yards on Sunday, leading Cincinnati to a 24-19 win over the San Diego Chargers that had some subtext. The Bengals have lost in the playoffs each of the last four years, but that one still stings because it was the only one that came at home.

Top five must-see plays from Week 2 in the NFL (Video) (Shutdown Corner)
Did you miss any of the Week 1 action in the NFL? We've got you covered. Here are five plays you shouldn't miss from Sunday's games: Green is gold The Cincinnati Bengals are 2-0. Their offense is humming. Yes, we know you haven't bought in yet — fool's gold, right? OK, fine, then give us this: A.J. Green can ball a little. We good there? Yes, he showed it Sunday against the San Diego Chargers, making the kind of catch that befits a newly minted $60 million receiver. Watch as Andy Dalton rainbows a teardrop and Green hauls it in over his shoulder in the back of the end zone, tapping his toes for a 7-0 Bengals lead. OBJ is OK Well, the New York Giants might not be feeling too good, having become the first team in NFL history two blow two straight 10-point fourth-quarter leads in consecutive weeks. But if you're a silver-lining type of person, the good news is that the Eli Manning-Odell Beckham Jr. connection reignited after a slow Week 1. Watch Manning hit Beckham perfectly on a fade pass on the left sideline for a diving catch despite sticky coverage from Atlanta Falcons cornerback Phillip Adams. Teddy Tarkenton? It was a brutal Week 1 for the Minnesota Vikings on both sides of the ball, but it was especially disappointing for their two offensive stalwarts. Teddy Bridgewater looked to build on a strong finish to his rookie year, and Adrian Peterson appeared primed to bust out after almost a whole year off, but both were shackled in their first game. On Sunday, each cut loose against the Detroit Lions, with a great bit of improvisation. Watch Bridgewater's best Fran Tarkenton impression as he shuttles the ball under pressure to Peterson, who takes the ball a back-breaking 49 yards. Fisher king Oh, those wacky Bengals. Watch as offensive coordinator Hue Jackson takes advantage of his athletically gifted rookie, first-round offensive tackle Jake Fisher, and puts him in a pass-catching role. Yes, Fisher — the former college tight end who played for Chip Kelly at Oregon — came in as an eligible receiver on the Bengals' unbalanced line. He appeared to be blocking on the play but slipped past the first line of defense of the Chargers and caught Dalton's pass. Nice hands, rook! Speaking of hands ... The New England Patriots went no huddle and stuck with the no-back spread passing game almost all afternoon against the Buffalo Bills. Tom Brady threw for 466 yards, and 29 of them came on this tremendous throw to and catch by Danny Amendola. Brady floats it over the head of Bills corner Nickell Robey, and Amendola is nearly horizontal to the ground when he catches this pass. How he held onto the ball and didn't bobble it boggles the mind. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Peterson, Vikings keep Lions winless with 26-16 victory (The Associated Press)
Adrian Peterson was warmly welcomed in his first game in Minnesota in 658 days, giving the Vikings the boost they were missing in a bad season opener. Peterson had 192 total yards and the Minnesota Vikings rebounded for a 26-16 victory Sunday over the Detroit Lions. Teddy Bridgewater played a smart, sharp game for Minnesota (1-1) after looking lost Monday in defeat at San Francisco, throwing one touchdown and running for another while finishing 14 for 18 for 153 yards and no turnovers.

Jay Cutler in a nutshell: Bears QB injured hamstring after throwing pick-six (Shutdown Corner)
Jay Cutler had the most Cutler moment of all time. Mere moments after the Fox announcers noted that Cutler was off to a strong start, completing his first eight pass attempts of the game against the Arizona Cardinals, Cutler rewarded them with a classic moment — a pick-six to give the Cardinals a 28-14 lead in the second quarter. Adding injury to insult, the Chicago Bears quarterback headed to the locker room immediately afterward with a hamstring injury. Cutler came down awkwardly after trying to make a tackle on the Tony Jefferson pick, and Cutler was ruled out for the rest of the game. This was not the first time Cutler got hurt after an interception. He was injured in a 2011 game against the San Diego Chargers trying to make a tackle on an Antoine Cason pick that year, suffering a broken right thumb in the process. The Bears will travel to face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3. The Cutler injury against the Cardinals set up the reunion everyone was waiting for: Jimmy Clausen playing for a John Fox-coached team, just as they did when they were together with the Carolina Panthers. Clausen went 1-9 as a starter in his rookie season in Fox's final year with the Panthers. Clausen completed only three of his first eight passing attempts for 8 yards, with a pick. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? NFL against the spread picks: A Week 2 game that feels like a playoff game (Shutdown Corner)
No game in Week 2 is a must win, but you can make a strong case that the Seattle Seahawks' game at Lambeau Field comes pretty close. We assume the Packers and Seahawks are the two best NFC teams, right? Sunday night's game is going to go a long way in determining where a potential NFC title game would be played between the two. Think about it in these terms: If the Packers win, they would take a two-game lead over the Seahawks and own the tiebreaker against them too. if the Packers go 12-4 after starting 2-0 (which isn't unrealistic at all), then the Seahawks would have to finish on a 13-1 run to get a better playoff seed than Green Bay. Or replace 12-4 with 11-5 (which would be a bit disappointing for Green Bay after a 2-0 start) and 13-1 with 12-2. You get it. If the Seahawks lose here, the odds shift dramatically to them having to come back to Lambeau Field for a championship game in January. Nobody wants to do that. The Seahawks understand this. They don't want to fall in an 0-2 hole. They don't want to chase the Packers for the No. 1 seed all season. They definitely don't want to come back to Lambeau in January. I think the Seahawks not only cover the 3.5-point spread but think they win outright. They have matched up well against Green Bay. I think they do so again in what should be one of the biggest Sunday night games of the season, even if it's just Week 2. Here are the rest of the picks this week: Broncos (+3) over Chiefs ( picked Thursday ): Never a doubt. If you think Andy Reid didn't make that bad of a call by handing off at the end, you probably think Reid was trying to hit a huge run by Jamaal Charles. He probably needed about a 50-yard run to get in field-goal range. Jamaal Charles has eight 50-yard runs in his 1,286 carries (0.6 percent), and he was trying to get his ninth against a really good defense which had to only prevent a 50-yard run. Terrible call.

Andy Reid has a prolific history of game-management gaffes (Shutdown Corner)
Game and clock management in the NFL is an epidemic, but Andy Reid redefines the pestilence. He is Spanish flu of game managers, and the Kansas City Chiefs’ Monday night’s loss to the Denver Broncos showed he hasn’t found a cure yet. Reid failed to recognize that the Broncos were out of timeouts at the end of the first half and that, up 14-7 with 2:30 remaining, he probably should run some clock and try to go into the half with a lead. Two straight passes were called — the first was incomplete, and the second was picked. The Broncos scored easily three plays later and eliminated any momentum the Chiefs had gained up 14-0. It was déjà vu at the end of the game, knotted at 24-all. Except Reid hedged badly with 35 seconds remaining. Either go for it or take a knee and play for overtime at home. Instead, Reid called two run plays starting at his own 20, the second of which was fumble-sixed by the Broncos. Game, set, match. Reid outsmarted himself again. [ Yahoo Fantasy Football: Still not too late to sign up for a league ] Something happens to Reid in the final five minutes of halves. It’s like his brain freezes, or maybe it subconsciously defaults to doing whatever might be considered the worse course of action at that moment. Sometimes it works out. Sometimes it doesn’t. Ask Philadelphia Eagles fans about it. Half of them were left bald — THANKS ANDY! — even though Reid has won nearly 60 percent of his career games, despite two complete rebuilding seasons at both jobs, and has a better career win percentage than Pete Carroll, Bill Parcells and Chuck Noll. On 349 days a year, Reid is an excellent coach. Truly. He’s an offensive savant and a quarterback cultivator who has always made the most of his talent. But game days have proven numerous times to be his greatest weakness. Here are a few moments over the years when Reid’s game-management skills shut down cold like a Foxboro headset: Super Bowl XXXIX Reid’s Eagles found themselves down 10 with just under six minutes remaining to the New England Patriots. And yet the offense chugged along with all the urgency of a three-toed sloth. Reid already had burned a golden timeout after a clock stoppage (!) late in the third quarter, so he had two left. Passes from Donovan McNabb netted 4, 4, 5 and 2 yards took a full two minutes off the clock. It was at this point at Alltell Stadium that I turned to the man sitting next to me (former NFL quarterback and current ESPN college football analyst Jesse Palmer) and in stereo we both said: “What is Andy doing?” The Eagles chugged down the field, saving their two timeouts for defense, and took the clock under two minutes before scoring a touchdown on the one deep pass of the drive, despite the Patriots being down their starting corner and safety with injuries. The ensuing onsides kick was recovered by the Patriots, who went on to win. Asked about the drive in question years later, Bill Belichick famously told NFL Network that he and his assistants were looking at each other saying, “We’re up 10 right? We’re not missing something here?” Even he couldn’t hold back from calling out Reid’s mismanagement. The “I goofed” game In McNabb’s return-to-Philadelphia game after being traded to the Washington Redskins, the Eagles seemed to lack urgency and energy early on as the inferior Redskins took a 14-0 lead in the first 10 minutes. But the Eagles rallied and had a chance to cut the lead in half before going into the locker room. With 1:45 remaining, the Eagles had a first and goal from the 4-yard line. Somehow, miraculously, they found themselves challenged for time and unable to score, undone by an unseemly delay of game call where Reid looked like he had just been told about the play clock and its tendency to click down after the ball is spotted. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football: Enter our $1 Million Week 2 contest ] The Eagles settled for a field goal but never recovered and lost 17-12. Had they scored a touchdown there … who knows? But McNabb was terrible, Reid knew it, his defense played well that day (despite dropping two would-be picks) and they still couldn’t win. Reid, as if setting up a future career as a Propecia pitch man, offered up this postgame explanation : “I goofed.” That game really was the beginning of the end of Reid in Philadelphia, if you trace it back. Three weeks earlier, the Eagles lost to the Packers, 27-20, as Reid nuked his three second-half timeouts down seven with 5:25, 5:17 and 5:11 left to play. “I wanted the points” More madness from the 2010 season: The Eagles, favored against the Chicago Bears, outscored the Bears 13-0 in the fourth quarter and lost. That’s because two of those field goals should have been reconsidered. Down two scores twice, Reid opted to kick field goals … and remain down two scores. The second one was far more egregious. The Eagles faced a fourth and goal from the Chicago 18, with two timeouts. Though the distance to the end zone was daunting, Reid had to go for it. Instead, he opted for the field goal, cutting a 15-point lead to 12 with 4:53 left. What did that do? The Eagles still needed to score twice to win. The field goal was completely useless. “I wanted the points there,” Reid said . “It came down to one possession. When you’re down in the red zone, you have to score. That’s what it comes down to, and we have a short period of time to get it right.” The Bears almost bailed the Eagles out by their own mismanagement, running off only 21 seconds on their next possession, but even with an Eagles TD drive after that, they ran out of time. The following season, Reid’s Eagles faced a similar spot, down 20-13 with 4:53 left against the Dallas Cowboys, and he once more opted for the field goal. Only one problem: Reid had burned two timeouts needlessly on bad second-half challenges — another Achilles heel of his — and was unable to stop the Cowboys on seven straight clock-milking plays. Game over. Notice a trend? Twice with the Chiefs In Reid’s first season in Kansas City, the plucky Chiefs rebounded from a 2-14 season to make the playoffs — a masterful turnaround. But the Chiefs could have gone 12-4 and made a stronger run at the Broncos for the division crown had Reid not helped cough up a win at home against the San Diego Chargers. The Chiefs had first and 10 from the San Diego 16-yard line, and the Chargers already had burned one timeout. Reid felt bad and used one of his own with 1:28 left. Why? Who on earth knows? His explanation: “No,” Reid said , “I was just calming the storm there and making sure that — we needed a touchdown at that point — make sure that we had the right things in and we were ready to go.” They had the right things in and scored on the next play, taking a 38-34 lead, but handing the ball back to Philip Rivers, who drove down the field — those two timeouts came in quite handy! — and scored in 46 tidy seconds, which ultimately would be the game-winner. Sigh. Then last season, in perhaps the Chiefs’ finest hour, crushing the New England Patriots 41-14 in Week 4, Reid’s first-half blunder was covered up by his own team’s pure dominance in the rout. Up 14-0 with a chance to step on the Patriots’ necks at the end of the first half. On second and 10 from the New England 10 with 31 seconds left, Alex Smith hit Travis Kelce for a 5-yard gain to the 9. Inexplicably, Reid let more than 15 seconds run off before calling the Chiefs’ final timeout, putting them in a tricky spot. On third and 5 with eight seconds left, Smith hit Dwayne Bowe — inbounds — for an 8-yard gain that would have run the clock out had the Patriots not bailed them out with a penalty. The end-of-half field goal ended up saving face, and not mattering at all in a 27-point blowout, but what if the eventual champions rallied early in the second half? Reid once more would have been ripped for letting a game slip away. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Chargers-Bengals Preview (The Associated Press)
The San Diego Chargers provided their fans with some early excitement in what could prove a tumultuous season. The Chargers will try to keep that positivity going with their first 2-0 start in three years Sunday while spoiling the Cincinnati Bengals' return home following a dominant opening performance. Philip Rivers shook off two first-half interceptions Sunday, including one returned for a score, to rally San Diego (1-0) from an 18-point deficit for a 33-28 win over Detroit.

Let’s go back to a simpler time, before we knew the proper psi for football inflation, when the first guy we thought of when we said “The Catch” was Dwight Clark and not Odell Beckham. I’m talking about Week 1 of the 2014 season. We learned so much about all 32 NFL teams in that season opener! Here were some of your big story lines coming out of that week: • The Tennessee Titans dominated the Kansas City Chiefs, winning 26-10 at Arrowhead Stadium. Jake Locker looked great, throwing for for 266 yards and two touchdowns. • Led by Knowshon Moreno’s 134 rushing yards, the most in the league in Week 1, the Miami Dolphins swarmed the New England Patriots. The Dolphins outscored the Pats 23-0 in the second half on their way to a 33-20 win. • The San Francisco 49ers, coming off a heartbreaking NFC championship game loss, jumped out to a 21-3 lead in the first quarter at the Dallas Cowboys and cruised to a 28-17 win. • Cordarrelle Patterson looked like a breakout star for the Minnesota Vikings. He had 128 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown run, in a 34-3 win over the Minnesota Vikings. “When I get the ball in my hands, I expect great things,” Patterson said, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. • Aaron Rodgers had an 81.5 rating after a loss at the Seattle Seahawks. Derek Anderson had a 108.7 rating after leading the Carolina Panthers to a season-opening win at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We know what happened next. The Titans lost 14 of their next 15 games. The Patriots went on to win the Super Bowl. Locker and Moreno are no longer in the NFL and Patterson has basically disappeared since that game. The Cowboys ended up being much better than the 49ers. Rodgers won the NFL MVP. Anderson … well, he didn’t. We’ll look back on some of the things we saw in Week 1 this season as signs of things to come. Some other things will seem totally random by the end of the season. Maybe even by the end of September. Good luck figuring out what is truth and what is fiction after one week. It’s hard to not overreact to what we saw in Week 1, because that’s all there is to analyze. But we wouldn’t freak out about some one-week anomaly in Week 10. So I’m not going to do so in Week 1. Not every team is going to move dramatically in the rankings just because of 60 minutes of football. Here are the overreaction-free post-Week 1 power rankings:

Lions have plenty to correct after second-half fade (The Associated Press)
If Detroit's season opener against San Diego had ended a bit differently, Ameer Abdullah might be the talk of the NFL. Instead, the rookie running back can only look ahead to next weekend with the rest of his team after an ugly loss for the Lions. ''Sometimes from the fans' standpoint, all you see is the big plays,'' Abdullah said Monday.

NFL-National Football League roundup (Reuters)
New York Giants running back Rashad Jennings said that he was ordered not to score a touchdown on two late running plays during the club's 27-26 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. The Giants held a three-point lead and had the ball inside the Dallas 5-yard line with under two minutes remaining when Jennings was instructed not to cross the goal-line. New York settled for a field goal and the Cowboys responded with a game-winning touchdown drive.

Eagles-Falcons looks like a big mismatch in the backfield (The Associated Press)
The Philadelphia Eagles will start the season Monday night with perhaps the deepest backfield in the NFL. There's DeMarco Murray, who led the league in rushing a year ago with 1,845 yards for Dallas. Next up is Ryan Mathews, a former first-round pick with a pair of 1,000-yard seasons on his resume in San Diego.

Rivers rallies Chargers to 33-28 victory over Lions (The Associated Press)
There's going to be uncertainty all season about the Chargers' future, whether it's in San Diego or in the Los Angeles area. There won't be any uncertainty about what Philip Rivers can do. Down 21-3 less than halfway through the second quarter, Rivers helped rally the Chargers to 30 straight points for a riveting 33-28 victory against the Detroit Lions on Sunday in what could be their final home opener in San Diego.

Longtime rivals Manning, Romo should have a few more battles (The Associated Press)
Eli Manning just signed what could be the last big contract of his career with the New York Giants, two years after Dallas' Tony Romo did the same during the offseason. If these rival quarterbacks in the NFC East stay healthy, they will likely oppose each other more than 20 times in the regular season. ''I think Tony and I have a good relationship,'' said Manning, who entered Sunday 11-11 as the starter against the Cowboys.

Goff throws 3 TDs in Cal's 35-7 win over San Diego St (The Associated Press)
Quarterback Jared Goff threw for two touchdowns in a 21-second span to break open a tight game and California overcame a sluggish start to beat San Diego State 35-7 on Saturday. One week after putting up 73 points against Grambling State in the season opener, the Golden Bears (2-0) sputtered on both sides of the ball and couldn't shake the pesky Aztecs until pulling away in the second half. Goff completed 17 of 24 attempts for 321 yards and three touchdowns.

Facebook study: Chiefs fans NFL's most optimistic, Chargers bring up rear (Shutdown Corner)
Social media is supposed to be an interactive experience involving the sharing of life and experiences. Who knew that it could also gauge an entire fanbase's expectation levels prior to the NFL season? Apparently it can via Facebook's newly unveiled "sentiment analysis for sports." Facebook recently examined the posting habits of NFL fans via their postings on the site to determine their hopefulness or despair ahead of the upcoming season. They determined, utilizing several factors, that Kansas City Chiefs fans were the most optimistic ahead of the season, based off their social interactions. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] Most glum about their team's prospects? San Diego Chargers fans — by a clear margin — who seem to be hitting the unlike button on their season despite the recent contract extension given to quarterback Philip Rivers. Perhaps rumors of the team possibly relocating to Los Angeles have something to do with it.

Eli Manning lands $84M extension, plus all-important no-trade clause (Shutdown Corner)
New York Giants QB Eli Manning landed the big money, and he received a nice little cherry on top, too. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Manning is set to sign a four-year, $84 million extension, with $65 million guaranteed — numbers that are in line with Thursday's report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that Manning was on the verge of agreeing to. But Schefter reports that Manning also received a key element: a no-trade clause that could keep him in New York for a long time. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] Manning's deal is in line with the extensions signed this offseason by Philip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger — the other draft class of 2004 stars — and the Giants now control his deal through the season Manning turns 38 years old. Over the next five years, including this year's existing contract, Manning will make $101.5 million. Deadlines tend to spur action, and Manning and agent Tom Condon had said they didn't want to negotiate during the season, and so two days before the Giants face off against the Dallas Cowboys, Manning got locked up. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football: Enter our $1 Million Week 1 contest ] The money is consistent with what franchise quarterbacks of Eli's ilk are getting these days. But the no-trade clause is a huge win for Manning, who once famously forced his way out of landing with the San Diego Chargers when he came out for the draft and now has say over where he's playing for four additional years. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. San Diego to miss mayor's deadline on vote to keep Chargers (The Associated Press)
The city of San Diego and the NFL Chargers are poised to miss a deadline set by Mayor Kevin Faulconer to schedule an election on whether taxpayers should help pay for a new stadium to stop the team from moving to Los Angeles. Faulconer wants an election before an anticipated decision by league owners, potentially early next year, on whether to return a team to Los Angeles after a two-decade absence.

Matchup of weak teams in opening spotlight. Why? QBs (The Associated Press)
The spotlight for Sunday's NFL openers will find its way to the Buccaneers and Titans, who were a combined 4-28 last season. ''Ever since I was a kid, I was a very competitive person and I don't take losing very well, and I think that's kind of what made me the player that I am today,'' Mariota says.

Stadium toxicity makes way for football as Bolts host Lions (The Associated Press)
And so it begins, what could be the Chargers' final season in San Diego. Philip Rivers will be throwing passes to Keenan Allen and Stevie Johnson, and Melvin Gordon will be looking for holes behind the ''Mayflower Line'' - big enough to drive a moving van though - when the Chargers host the Detroit Lions in a season opener Sunday at aging Qualcomm Stadium, the epicenter for angst among local football fans. For a while, anyway, Rivers, Manti Te'o and Danny Woodhead will take the spotlight away from Dean Spanos, Mark Fabiani and Kevin Faulconer and the rest of the toxic stew that has swamped the city in the push for a new stadium.

Former Giants teammates saddened, confused by Tyler Sash's death (Shutdown Corner)
The stunning death of former New York Giants safety Tyler Sash, only 27 years old, has shaken the teammates he played with from 2011 to 2013. The New York Post spoke with several of them this week after Sash's death, which is being investigated, and found a locker room that could hardly believe he was gone and one that was left with more questions about Sash's life than answers. “You kinda just say, ‘I wonder … I wonder why,’ ” Giants linebacker Mark Herzlich said per the Post, “ ‘and I wonder if there’s anything else I could have done.’ And I don’t think that there’s necessarily anything I could have done but … I wish he had reached out and would have told me what was happening.” Herzlich last saw Sash 10 months ago in Iowa, where Sash was born and where he played college, and though Herzlich had no indication of something ominous happening he speculates that life after football proved to be difficult for his friend. The Giants released Sash in August 2013 after he had suffered a concussion. “Some mental instability at the end where he figured that it was easier to just end it, which is … it’s tough,” Herzlich said. “And you never think it’s gonna get to that. … There’s life after football, but it’s not the same. And you realize that with what happened with Tyler.” Herzlich wondered if he had noticed something truly amiss ... could he have done something to help his fallen friend? “It stops you in your tracks, and makes you … really wonder if there’s anything that could have been done, to help save him,” Herzlich said. “That’s the hardest part, I think. Because when it happens in your circle, you wish that guy was still in your circle. And you’d do anything to get him back there. So, it was a tragedy — it is a tragedy — and I cannot explain how saddened I am by his loss, and his loss of hope. Because I think that’s probably what had happened.” They were teammates for parts of three seasons and were able to celebrate the Giants' Super Bowl XLVI over the New England Patriots together as regular contributors on special teams and defense. Herzlich chose Wednesday to remember the good times he had with Sash, and especially that night in Indianapolis and the next day heading back to New York as world champions. “I remember we did not go to bed,” Herzlich said, “and then we were all on the plane the next day and sang the ‘I Got A Ring’ song, and he was right there singing that too so … yeah … we didn’t get much sleep that night.” And though we don't have a clear indication on Sash's death, or what might if anything have prompted it, we do have questions. Herzlich strongly suggested with his words what might have happened. Sash was cited for public intoxication and interference with official acts last year. It appeared he might have had depression over his NFL career being over. We don't know if he was suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which was what former San Diego Chargers linebacker Junior Seau was found to have suffered from before he took his own life. But it's hard not to wonder when you hear the news of a player teammates said was "infectious" and "very, very lovable and likeable" and who was years short of making it to his 30th birthday. It's the concussion-addled era in which we live following an offseason in which several players, namely three San Francisco 49ers in their primes, walked away from the NFL with myriad concerns about their health. “I’m very dumbfounded by this, and I’m very sad,” Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said. Coughlin is not the only one. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Email him at edholm@yahoo-inc.com or follow him on Twitter! Follow @Eric_Edholm

Steely Dan's 'Deacon Blues' inspired by Bama, yes, but also Deacon Jones (Shutdown Corner)
As an unabashed fan of the 1970s dad-rock heroes Steely Dan, I was always struck by and curious of the famous chorus of the band’s 1977 hit, “Deacon Blues.” You might know it: They call Alabama the Crimson Tide / Call me Deacon Blues [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] What was the genesis of the line? It resonated for me for years, and in the pre-internet days (yes, they existed) I read the few interviews that the Dan duo — Donald Fagan and Walter Becker — did in hopes of finding some nugget of information on this lyric. Nothing. I always envisioned Fagan and Becker as the hermetic anti-rockers, wearing sunglasses inside their big, furniture-less Malibu homes by the sea, emerging every few years to fire off lyrical salvos to their rivals The Eagles (the antiseptic band, not the football team) and not, say, big Bear Bryant guys. Finally, I have my answers. Speaking with the Wall Street Journal , the members of Dan revealed the inspiration for the song and specifically the Crimson Tide line. And with it comes an unexpected bonus: Not only was it about Bama football but also about (!) Deacon Jones. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football: Enter our $1 Million Week 1 contest ] The former Los Angeles Rams and San Diego Chargers defensive lineman, aka the Secretary of Defense and the man who coined the term “sack” (and had 173.5 of them before it became an official NFL statistic in his 14-year Hall of Fame career). At the time Steely Dan recorded “Deacon Blues,” Jones was retired but still a celebrity for his acting work on TV and in movies and commercials. Here’s Fagan on how the song came together: “When Walter came over, we started on the music, then started filling in more lyrics to fit the story. At that time, there had been a lineman with the Los Angeles Rams and the San Diego Chargers, Deacon Jones. We weren’t serious football fans, but Deacon Jones’s name was in the news a lot in the 1960s and early ‘70s, and we liked how it sounded. It also had two syllables, which was convenient, like “Crimson.” The name had nothing to do with Wake Forest’s Demon Deacons or any other team with a losing record. The only Deacon I was familiar with in football at the time was Deacon Jones.”

Players who could make breakthroughs in 2015 (The Associated Press)
Most of those preseason stars who slalomed their way into the end zone or smashed into ball carriers now get to watch the real elite NFL players take the stage.
