Talks falter for new Chargers stadium in San Diego (The Associated Press)

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer is questioning whether the Chargers are serious about staying in the city, the latest salvo in rapidly deteriorating negotiations over a new stadium for the NFL team. Faulconer's comments Wednesday came one day after the Chargers shot down his trial balloon for a city election this year on financing a stadium.

Chargers reject San Diego election on new stadium (The Associated Press)

The San Diego Chargers have shot down Mayor Kevin Faulconer's trial balloon to hold a citywide election this year on financing for a new stadium. Chargers' special counsel, Mark Fabiani, said Tuesday that the Dec. 15 election the mayor suggested won't survive legal scrutiny under state election law and state law for environmental impact reviews. Fabiani says to expect time-consuming court challenges that would end in defeat.

Raiders plan to give young cornerbacks a chance (The Associated Press)

When the Oakland Raiders began overhauling their team after another dismal season, one position noticeably didn't get much help. After bringing in a different pair of veteran starters at cornerback the past three seasons in failed trials, the Raiders decided it was time to give the young guys a closer look. Barring a summer addition, the starters at cornerback this season in Oakland will likely come from a group that includes 2013 first-round pick DJ Hayden and second-year players TJ Carrie and Keith McGill.

LaDainian Tomlinson to have No. 21 retired by San Diego Chargers (Shutdown Corner)

LaDainian Tomlinson probably doesn't get enough due, historically. He's one of the greatest running backs in NFL history. He's fifth all time in rushing yards and yards from scrimmage, second all time in rushing touchdowns, and his 2006 MVP season stands as one of the greatest seasons the NFL has ever seen. The San Diego Chargers will honor him as one of their all-time greats, making him the fourth Charger to have his number retired. Tomlinson's No. 21 will go alongside Dan Fouts' No. 14, Lance Alworth's No. 19 and Junior Seau's No. 55. Great company there. The Chargers announced Tomlinson will be inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame and have his number retired during a ceremony at halftime of a Sunday night game on Nov. 22 against the Kansas City Chiefs. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football is back: Sign up for a league today! ] Of course the one mark against Tomlinson is he never helped take the Chargers to a Super Bowl, and his postseason numbers don't compare to what he put up in the regular season. But that doesn't diminish the rest: the special running ability (seven straight 1,200-yard seasons), the uncanny receiving ability (624 catches is 60th all time and more than Hall of Famers like Fred Biletnikoff and Alworth) and incredible scoring ability (his 31-touchdown season in 2006 is three more than the second-best season ever). Tomlinson is one of the most remarkable players in NFL history. Getting honored by the Chargers is a good practice for when Canton calls. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Chargers' Fluker goes from homeless to graduate, NFL starter (The Associated Press)

D.J. Fluker had bouts of anger sometimes, wondering how God let he and his family wind up homeless, five people sleeping shoehorned into a car. ''God just does things to see how tough you are, and that's one of those times you had to be tough,'' Fluker said in a recent phone interview. Going through those times, I was like, 'I don't want to have to do that again, ever.' ''When I did get opportunities to do things that I needed to do, I took full advantage of them.'' It's a message Fluker wants kids to hear.

Knee injuries to 2 prized picks have NFL teams concerned (The Associated Press)

NFL teams are reviewing the way they handle rookie minicamps after season-ending knee injuries to two prized picks less than a week after all the hugs and handshakes of draft night. Locker rooms and front offices were jolted when defensive end Dante Fowler, the third overall pick, blew out his left knee on the first day of Jacksonville's rookie minicamp. Twenty-four hours later, tight end Jeff Heuerman, Denver's third-round selection, tore his left ACL covering a kickoff.

Chargers rookie, out with hamstring injury, chided for playing dodgeball (Shutdown Corner)

It should probably go without saying that if you're not healthy enough to participate in NFL offseason practices, it's not the best idea to go all out in a charity dodgeball tournament. It shouldn't comes as a big surprise that the San Diego Chargers were not too happy to see rookie linebacker Denzel Perryman, who has been sitting out football practices with a hamstring injury, getting crazy during the Fox Sports San Diego Dodgeball Tournament along with many other Chargers. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football is back: Sign up for a league today! ] The difference between Perryman and his teammates at the dodgeball tournament is that his teammates are healthy enough to participate in their day jobs. "It's been discussed," Chargers coach Mike McCoy said, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune . "That's all I'm going to say. I've discussed it with him. That's it. You've got to get past these tests here before you do all of that stuff." You can picture the steam coming out of McCoy's ears as you read that. Perryman wasn't cleared for any team drills in the four OTA practices through Monday, when McCoy addressed Perryman's cameo with the Globo-Gym team. Perryman looked pretty spry on the dodgeball video, which McCoy watched according to the Union-Tribune. That's great, considering the Chargers were hoping to get an athletic run-stopper with their second-round pick, but they'd probably rather see that athleticism on the football field soon. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports.
