NFL-National Football League roundup (Reuters)

Running back Adrian Peterson, the only player on the Minnesota Vikings' roster who did not show up for the first week of OTAs, kept his name in the headlines Thursday. Not coincidentally, it was one day after coach Mike Zimmer said Peterson's "not going to play for anybody else. Wilson has been one of the best bargains in the NFL since the Seahawks drafted him in the third round in 2012, helping the team to two Super Bowls and one title.

Chargers to begin stadium negotiations with city, county (The Associated Press)

A spokesman for Mayor Kevin Faulconer says city and county officials will sit down with executives from the Chargers on Tuesday to begin negotiations for a new stadium. The Chargers are threating to leave for the Los Angeles area if they don't get a new stadium deal. The plan calls for the Chargers to contribute $300 million, or $100 million more than they've said they'd be willing to contribute.

Chargers start OTAs with Philip Rivers firmly in place at QB (The Associated Press)

The San Diego Chargers opened OTAs on Tuesday with Philip Rivers at quarterback. In the run-up to the NFL draft, speculation was rampant that the Chargers might trade Rivers to the Tennessee Titans for the No. 2 pick and select Oregon's Marcus Mariota as Rivers' replacement. Then there was the talk of Rivers stiff-arming the Chargers in their attempt to negotiate a long-term contract.

Los Angeles was the main topic, along with deflated footballs, future Super Bowls, altered extra points and international games. ''We're significantly farther than we have been on any relocation in the recent past,'' Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday.

Ben Garland spent his offseason fulfilling his 2015 commitment to the Colorado Air National Guard and now he's fighting to serve as one of Peyton Manning's primary protectors. Five years after turning heads by chasing down Tim Tebow and then outracing the quick quarterback in post-practice wind sprints, the former Air Force defensive lineman is finally getting his shot at starting on Denver's offensive line. Garland played in eight games last season after spending two years on the Broncos' practice squad, a stint that followed his two-year military commitment to the Air Force.

Timetable for decision on teams in LA could be moved up (The Associated Press)

The timetable for approving a franchise's relocation to Los Angeles could be moved up to the end of 2015. NFL vice president Eric Grubman, the league's lead man on a possible return to LA, said Wednesday the window for such applications that now begins Jan. 1 could be moved ''to very late in the (upcoming) regular season.'' The 32 team owners could vote on a team's relocation ''some weeks after that.'' The St. Louis Rams, Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers are involved in stadium projects in the Los Angeles area that Commissioner Roger Goodell has called ''viable.'' Grubman said there have been discussions on moving one or two teams if no acceptable stadium projects come together in the current markets. San Diego and Oakland have teamed up on one LA project.

New $250 million pro soccer stadium proposed for downtown Los Angeles (Reuters)

By Steve Gorman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The new Major League Soccer club coming to Los Angeles unveiled plans on Monday to build a $250 million downtown stadium for the team that could mark the first open-air professional sports arena in the city since baseball's Dodger Stadium in 1962. The MLS expansion franchise, due to launch its inaugural season in 2018 and currently known under the working name of the Los Angeles Football Club, said the proposed 22,000-seat facility would also rank as the most costly privately financed soccer-specific stadium in the United States. The project would be financed by the team, whose ownership group includes basketball Hall of Famer Earvin "Magic" Johnson, U.S. soccer great Mia Hamm, motivational speaker Tony Robbins and Vietnamese-American venture capitalist Henry Nguyen. The team replaces the now-defunct Chivas USA and will compete for fan support against the four-time MLS champion L.A. Galaxy, which plays at the StubHub Center in nearby Carson.

San Diego announces stadium financing plan amid Spanos ownership shift (Shutdown Corner)

There's a lot of uncertainty surrounding the San Diego Chargers, but a couple of news items on Monday might start to clear some of it up. San Diego announced a financing plan for a new $1.1 billion stadium for the Chargers on the same day that longtime owner Dean Spanos shifted day-to-day operations of the team to his sons John and AG. According to ESPN.com , Dean Spanos will remain chairman of the board of directors and oversee efforts to get a new stadium ... wherever that ends up being. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football is back: Sign up for a league today! ] San Diego wants to keep the Chargers, with the threat of Los Angeles getting a team cropping up again. The $1.1 billion stadium would be paid for, under the plan released by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's task force, by the team, the NFL, taxpayers (of course), and fans who attend games according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The plan, according to the Union-Tribune, would include $200 million from the NFL, $300 million from the Chargers, another $300 million in rent payments from the Chargers at $10 million per year over 30 years, and $120 million each from city and county taxpayers. Taxes would not increase, the Union-Tribune reported, because the money would come from each agency's general fund over a 30-year period. Another $111 million would be generated by parking and ticket surcharges and $120 million would be raised from personal seat licenses. There would be rent increases for San Diego State football, the Holiday Bowl and Poinsettia Bowl too.  The plan became more urgent with another threat of the NFL moving to Los Angeles, a bluff the league has successfully run for 21 years to get taxpayers to pay for new stadiums. The shift in Chargers ownership responsibilities doesn't seem to change much for the team when it comes to the stadium issue, or anything else really. Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune said that John and AG Spanos, who are 35 and 36 years old respectively, have been effectively running the team for a while. John will be president of football operations and AG will be president of business operations, ESPN.com said. Dean Spanos will still work on the stadium issue, which is the biggest question the Chargers face in the near future. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Group recommends Chargers pay $300M, NFL $200M for stadium (The Associated Press)

An advisory group appointed by Mayor Kevin Faulconer recommended Monday that the Chargers contribute $300 million toward a new $1.33 billion stadium, with the NFL giving $200 million, the city and county $121 million each and personal seat licenses totaling $120 million. Under intense pressure from the team and the NFL, the Citizen's Stadium Advisory Group said in its financing plan that there won't be tax increases or increases to the city's general fund, and that the financing plan doesn't rely on development to pay for the stadium, parking or infrastructure. Other suggested funding sources include the Chargers paying rent of $173 million over 30 years, ticket surcharges totaling $84.7 million - or $5 a ticket - and $225 million from the sale of 75 acres of land at the Qualcomm Stadium site. The Chargers are threatening to leave for the Los Angeles area unless they get a deal to replace aging Qualcomm Stadium.

Five reasons why the NFL got the deflate-gate punishment dead wrong (Shutdown Corner)

The NFL made a circus out of deflate-gate, and it made sure in the end it got the reaction it wanted from the general public. That's the only way to really figure the miscues the NFL made with its unprecedented and overdone punishments for the New England Patriots in deflating footballs (an issue, as we'll see, the league never cared about before). [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football is back: Sign up for a league today! ] The NFL screwed up this punishment, going for the standing ovation from a mostly Patriots-hating public (all good teams are hated, and the Patriots surely rub people the wrong way) instead of doing what was right. Here are five reasons the NFL got the punishment so, so wrong: The NFL did not care much about football tampering, until it fit its agenda How do I know the NFL didn't care about ball tampering before? Well, there are two cases in which it did practically nothing, seeing them as the misdemeanors they were. Many people have brought these situations up in previous days, including ESPN.com's Mike Reiss. They are perfect examples of the NFL's hypocrisy when it came to the Patriots. Last season, the Carolina Panthers and Minnesota Vikings were caught, on a cold day, using sideline heaters to warm up footballs . That's against the rules. You can argue that it's not the same level as deflating footballs in a bathroom, but it has the same effect: Something outside of the rules to make the football easier to grip and catch. The Panthers and Vikings were ... warned. That's it. Now, even if you don't think it's the same level crime, it is at least similar in nature, and the difference between no punishment at all and what the Patriots got shows the NFL wanted to make an example out of New England. The NFL was simply pandering to the crowd, whether that was Pats-hating fans of 31 Pats-hating owners. Also, in 2012 the San Diego Chargers used towels with an adhesive substance on their game balls and didn't give them up to the NFL immediately when ordered to do so. If you think the Panthers-Vikings thing was just some honest mistake, it's a lot harder to convince anyone that there was no intent by the Chargers to gain an advantage. And the Chargers' punishment? A $20,000 fine. That's it. The NFL just recently started caring about game ball manipulation, about the time of last season's AFC championship game apparently. Heck, the league didn't even immediately act when the Indianapolis Colts told the NFL the day before that game that they were concerned about the Patriots deflating game balls. Doesn't sound like a league that was too concerned about the issue, does it? I don't believe there was necessarily a sting, I just think the league didn't care about the issue. Until it saw which way the public wind was blowing, that is. The precedents are so out of line with the Patriots' discipline, it's hard to reconcile in a way that makes any sense. The argument that Spygate mattered doesn't hold up in Brady's suspension

Chargers make $3.3M profit rather than paying $23M in rent (The Associated Press)

The San Diego Chargers were paid nearly $3.3 million by the city to play at Qualcomm Stadium from 2006 through 2013, thanks to rent credits and reimbursements from a settlement that made the stadium compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Without the ADA settlement and rent credits, the Chargers would have owed the city nearly $23 million during that span, according to figures provided by the city. Final figures for the 2014 season haven't been calculated, but the Chargers stand to again make a profit for playing at the aging stadium they say can no longer sustain them financially. The Chargers are threatening to move to the Los Angeles area if they don't get a new stadium.
