Some notable things about 2015 NFL draft (The Associated Press)

Three teams showed no fear of behavioral baggage accompanying some prospects in the NFL draft's first round. Tampa Bay believes it found its franchise quarterback at the top of the proceedings Thursday night, selecting Jameis Winston. The Florida State quarterback made plenty of headlines winning the Heisman Trophy in 2013 while leading the Seminoles to the national title, and again with his strong play last season. ''It's been my lifelong dream to be a successful quarterback and great teammate in the NFL.'' Denver also didn't struggle much with the fact Missouri defensive end Shane Ray was cited for marijuana possession on Monday.

Heisman winners Winston, Mariota go 1-2 in draft (Reuters)

Jameis Winston was taken by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the first pick of the National Football League Draft on Thursday and was followed by fellow quarterback Marcus Mariota in a Heisman 1-2. Winston won the 2013 Heisman Trophy as top U.S. collegiate player, and Mariota, taken by the Tennessee Titans with the second pick, was the 2014 winner, marking the first time Heisman recipients went 1-2 in the NFL Draft. The 21-year-old Winston, who became the youngest winner of the coveted college award at 19, one month before leading Florida State to a national championship, was the consensus top choice.

Ravens select WR Perriman with 26th pick in NFL draft (The Associated Press)

The Baltimore Ravens have selected Central Florida wide receiver Breshad Perriman with the 26th overall pick in the NFL draft. The 6-foot-2, 212-pounder fills a huge void for the Ravens, who had taken a defensive player with their top pick in each of the past five years. The Ravens were determined to get a wide receiver in the draft after losing deep threat Torrey Smith to the San Francisco 49ers and releasing wideout Jacoby Jones. Steve Smith remains, but he turns 36 this month.

Chargers move up 2 spots to draft running back Melvin Gordon (The Associated Press)

The San Diego Chargers have not only kept quarterback Philip Rivers, but they've paid a heavy price to move up two spots to select Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon with the 15th pick overall. The Chargers sent their first- and fourth-round picks this year and fifth-round pick next year to the San Francisco 49ers. San Diego needed a bruising back to help take the pressure off Rivers, and they got it in Gordon. The Chargers needed a featured back after letting Ryan Mathews leave as a free agent.

Devalued? Chargers trade up to take running back Melvin Gordon (Shutdown Corner)

Not only was there one running back selected in the first round of the NFL draft, there were two to go in the top 15. And the San Diego Chargers obviously don't buy that the running back position is being devalued, because they gave up a fourth-round pick this season and a fifth-round pick in 2016 to trade up from 17 to 15 to get Gordon. The Houston Texans had the 16th pick and obviously the Chargers were worried that Gordon, who almost broke Barry Sanders' single-season rushing record at Wisconsin last season, wouldn't be there after the Texans picked. Gordon had 2,587 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns last season. The Chargers have a lot more certainty at running back now. Ryan Mathews signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, but even though he is very talented he couldn't stay healthy. Branden Oliver played well last season when Mathews was hurt, but he doesn't have the pedigree of Gordon, a Heisman Trophy finalist. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football is back: Sign up for a league today! ] Having a productive running back will help the Chargers offense, and Philip Rivers in particular. He won't be asked to do it all himself, because presumably the Chargers really like Gordon if they were willing to give up two picks to go get him. He'll get plenty of carries, and has to be considered one of the early favorites to win NFL offensive rookie of the year, considering that fellow running back Todd Gurley (who was the 10th pick to the St. Louis Rams) will be returning from knee surgery. No running back was taken in the first round in 2013 or 2014. The Chargers obviously don't feel that it's a bad idea to invest in a running back in this era, because they paid a decent price to make sure they got the back they coveted. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Top 2 picks prove importance of QBs (The Associated Press)

So Jameis Winston is headed to Tampa Bay as the first overall selection and Marcus Mariota goes to Tennessee at No. 2. They'll take their Heisman Trophies (Winston in 2013, Mariota last year) and try to turn two downtrodden franchises into contenders, maybe even champions. The biggest question was whether Florida State's Winston had too much off-field baggage for the Bucs. His college coach, Jimbo Fisher, has no doubts either.

Tennessee Titans stay put, draft quarterback Marcus Mariota second overall (Shutdown Corner)

Of all the crazy scenarios that seemed to be in play for Marcus Mariota and the second pick of the NFL draft, the craziest seemed to be that nothing outlandish would happen. After all that speculation, the second pick stayed put with the Tennessee Titans. And for all the talk of where Mariota would land, and the endless rumors about the Philadelphia Eagles selling off the entire franchise to get him, he ended up going with the second pick, right behind Jameis Winston. The Titans now have a star to build around, something the team sorely lacked. They also lack talent on the roster, so Mariota is going into a tough situation, especially with the big learning curve he faces. The Titans were 2-14 last season. And the Titans will be second-guessed for what they didn’t do with the pick. They drafted Zach Mettenberger last year in the sixth round, and he had a promising rookie season. They could have traded the pick for a lot of pieces or drafted someone like USC defensive end Leonard Williams and tried to see if Mettenberger would develop. They took the Mariota route instead. it was just too hard to pass up the chance to draft a potential franchise quarterback. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football is back: Sign up for a league today! ] There were rumors for months about where Mariota might land. The Eagles were the most popular rumor due to Chip Kelly’s ties with Mariota dating back to the University of Oregon. The Cleveland Browns were said to have offered two first-round picks to move up to No. 2 to get Mariota. Other teams like the San Diego Chargers were said to be interested in moving up to get Mariota. ESPN reported just before the draft started that the Chicago Bears made a late push to trade for the second pick. The Eagles were rumored to offer multiple picks and multiple starting-caliber players to the Titans to move up to No. 2 right before the pick. Eagles fans didn't hide their desire before the draft: Fans changing "Do the deal" at Chip #Eagles https://t.co/y7NZRHDaDD — Eliot Shorr-Parks (@EliotShorrParks) April 30, 2015 In the end, the pairing of Kelly and Mariota wasn't meant to be. Mariota is an interesting NFL projection. He comes from a spread offense at Oregon that really doesn’t resemble what he’ll be doing in the NFL. He has a strong arm, is a great athlete and was incredibly productive in college. Those attributes placed him high on draft boards. And he's going to the team that few expected him to land with, the team that held the second pick all along. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Report: Chargers inform agent of Philip Rivers they're not trading him (Shutdown Corner)

You apparently can erase the idea of Philip Rivers playing for a new team in 2015. The San Diego Chargers, per ESPN's Chris Mortensen, have informed the agent for Rivers that the team has no plans to trade their quarterback, who is set to hit free agency after the upcoming season. Word had leaked out that Rivers was unhappy with his situation and perhaps had no interest in extending his contract, but recent reports suggest that some discussion has taken place about a new deal. But the Chargers trading Rivers to the Tennessee Titans will have to go down in the Draft Rumor Graveyard as one that got away. For weeks it had legs, with neither side really denying the possibility of Rivers going to the Titans for the No. 2 pick — presumably for Marcus Mariota to the Chargers — but it has come to an end for now, and likely forever. Now the Titans are left to consider other options with that second pick. And the Chargers don't yet know whether Rivers wants to remain with the only franchise in the NFL that he has known. It's draft season! Basically, everyone's just guessing. And we love it. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Report: Bills for proposed new St. Louis stadium total $800K (The Associated Press)

Contractors already have submitted roughly $800,000 in bills toward the development of a billion-dollar proposed football stadium in St. Louis, according to a newspaper report. Two executives with the St. Louis Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority - which owns and operates the Edward Jones Dome, the Rams' current home - have authorized the hiring of or payments to more than a dozen firms involved in crafting plans for a new open-air stadium along the Mississippi River, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1OIoiuk ) reported Thursday. Members of the St. Louis stadium task force made their case directly to NFL officials in New York last week, hoping to either keep the Rams or attract another team if owner Stan Kroenke moves the franchise to Los Angeles. Shrewsbury, who has said any spending now could mean the authority may affect its ability to pay off bonds for the Edward Jones Dome, reiterated that concern Wednesday.

NFL DRAFT: 5 things to look for in the first round Thursday (The Associated Press)

Commissioner Roger Goodell says Chicago has ''overdelivered'' as host of the 2015 NFL draft. Here are five things to watch for in the first round Thursday night: CHARACTER: General managers, coaches, scouts and owners always insist that a player's character is a key component in who gets selected, especially in the opening round. The NFL comes off a year marked by domestic abuse cases that placed the names Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson and Greg Hardy in the spotlight for their off-field misbehavior, not their on-field skills. The last thing the NFL wants or needs is a slew of prospects with character problems being selected high in the draft.

Marcus Mariota talk heats up with reported Browns offer to Titans (Shutdown Corner)

Marcus Mariota likely won't be selected first overall on Thursday, barring one of the biggest surprises in NFL draft history, but he's certainly the most interesting player in this draft. On the eve of the draft, we're no closer to knowing who will be the No. 2 pick, which team will be taking the No. 2 pick or if Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota will be involved in that second pick. But a report has set the price to beat to secure that No. 2 overall pick from the Tennessee Titans. Pat McManamon of ESPN reported that the Browns have officially offered their two first-round picks, No. 12 and 19, to the Titans for No. 2. The Browns would take Mariota there. That's no huge surprise, because that trade has been speculated for many weeks (it's worth noting that fellow ESPN writer Paul Kuharsky said a Titans source told him no offer was made) . But it kicks into high gear what will be a very interesting period for the Titans. The Titans have shown public interest in Mariota, and even if that's to protect leverage in a potential trade, there's no reason they shouldn't have interest in Mariota. The Oregon quarterback would give them a potential star to build around, something the franchise sorely lacks. But, USC defensive end Leonard Williams and Florida outside linebacker Dante Fowler could be that star player too, and they have to be options for the Titans at No. 2. Of course, there are many teams desperate for a franchise quarterback and the Titans could cash in by trading the second pick. If McManamon's report is correct, they could at least get two top 19 picks for trading out. The Philadelphia Eagles are a popular speculated destination for Mariota because of the tie between the quarterback and his former college coach, Chip Kelly, who is with the Eagles now. The San Diego Chargers have shown interest in Mariota but most recent reports deny that they'd be interested in trading quarterback Philip Rivers. The Washington Redskins, New York Jets and Chicago Bears have top-10 picks and less-than-desirable quarterback situations, and it would be odd if those teams haven't at least considered talking trade with Tennessee. If the Titans do make the second pick themselves, it's safe to assume they'll be passing up plenty of good offers to do so. Of course, if the Browns land Mariota that makes for an interesting story. Cleveland has had a torturous history at quarterback since re-entering the NFL in 1999, would be admitting defeat on 2014 first-round pick Johnny Manziel after just two NFL starts and Mariota would be fighting a lot of recent history to try to become a star with one of the NFL's most dysfunctional franchises. This NFL draft really does begin with the second pick. Now the Titans just have to figure out their best move. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Titans' choices: QB, another player or try to trade down (The Associated Press)

Whatever the Tennessee Titans do with the No. 2 overall selection in the NFL draft will depend on just how much they like quarterback Zach Mettenberger. Because of a 2-14 record in coach Ken Whisenhunt's first season, the Titans are drafting within the top eight picks for the third time since 2006. They took quarterbacks with each of those previous picks, though both Vince Young (No. 3 in 2006) and Jake Locker (eighth overall in 2011) now are retired from the NFL. Still rebuilding, the Titans could draft their third quarterback in 10 years unless Mettenberger has shown them enough starting six games without a win as a rookie to stick with him.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said presentations this week by two stadium groups affiliated with NFL teams were "very exciting" and offered a "great deal of potential to be successful". St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke is vying against a joint venture by the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders for the right to call Los Angeles home again. Kroenke is planning a $1.8 billion stadium in Inglewood, and the Chargers and Raiders are working on a $1.7 billion venue in Carson. The Carson City Council unanimously approved the project on Tuesday, and new designs were presented to Goodell and the league's relocation committee in New York.

Running backs not facing demise, but still devalued in draft (The Associated Press)

The experience, potential and skills of Georgia's Todd Gurley and Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon ought to entice a couple of teams to end the unprecedented two-year absence of running backs from the first round. Elite running backs haven't stopped being developed by college programs, as evidenced by the depth of this class that could produce about a dozen picks by the end of the third round. So why doesn't this position measure up anymore to some of the others when NFL teams rank their prospects? Maybe they didn't feel the running backs the last couple of years were first-round talent.

Which NFL teams got unfair schedules? University of Buffalo engineers know (Shutdown Corner)

Washington Redskins fans, you might not want to hear this. University of Buffalo engineers, who have done a study on imbalances in the NFL schedule and presented it at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference earlier this year, have studied the 2015 NFL schedule that was released this week . One of the main imbalances they look at is which teams get the most games against "rested" opponents – those coming off Thursday night games or bye weeks. Yep, Washington got the shortest stick in that area. Washington plays five games against opponents with extra rest this year, the UB engineers said. That's the most in the NFL. The Redskins have three games against teams coming off bye weeks and two games against teams coming off a Thursday game. That's a very high number; it's almost one-third of Washington's schedule. Other teams shouldn't be too happy either. The Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks each have four games against opponents with extra rest. The New England P atriots, Buffalo Bills (who have frequently gotten imbalanced schedules the past few years), San Diego Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs are next at three each. "We had a detailed look at the 2015, and we see again the imbalances are significant," said Murat Kurt, PhD, an assistant professor in UB’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Some teams should be much happier with their draw. The Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals don't play any games against teams coming off a bye or a Thursday night game. This all might not seem like much, but it is a disadvantage. In a 16-game season in which playoff spots are almost always determined by just one game or tiebreakers, it's worth noting. When the engineers studied the issue they found that from 2009-13 a team's average winning percentage decreased by 3.77 percent against rested teams. In 2013 it was a decrease of about seven percent.  Rested opponents aren't the only factor UB engineers note. A cluster of divisional games in a row can be inequitable. The Green Bay Packers are the big losers there. From Nov. 15 to Dec. 3 the Packers play four divisional games in a row, something that is very rare. "Playing four back-to-back divisional games – which are often your toughest because those opponents know you best, they're playing hard and it means the most – is difficult," said Mark Karwan, PhD, Praxair Professor of Operations Research and SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor. "They should be spread out."  Another scheduling inequity the Buffalo engineers focused on was at least three road games in a row. Buffalo, Miami, Jacksonville and Atlanta got three road games in a row this season. The Bills have five road games in six weeks, a particularly tough stretch. Travel itself can be unbalanced. Kurt provided the examples of Baltimore and Tennessee. The Ravens have back-to-back trips out west twice during the season; Weeks 1 and 2 at Denver and Oakland and Weeks 6 and 7 at San Francisco and Arizona. Compare that to the Titans. Their first two trips aren't too bad (at Tampa Bay and Cleveland) and then they have a five-week stretch in which they won't leave Nashville. From Week 3 to Week 7 they have four home games and a bye week.  "They don’t leave their home for 5 weeks," Kurt said. "That’s kind of easy." The schedule will never be entirely fair, but the UB crew of Kurt, Karwan, Niraj Pandey (a PhD candidate in UB’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering), and Kyle Cunningham (earned a bachelor of science degree from UB in 2014), tried to figure out a solution. They came up with the study “ Alleviating Competitive Imbalances in NFL Schedules: An Integer-Programming Approach ,” and created a mathematical model called a mixed-integer linear program to produce the most fair schedule possible. They're Bills fans, and part of the reason for the study was that the Bills complained about playing many rested opponents. Sure enough, the engineers found that the Bills played more games against rested opponents (26) than any other team from 2002-2014. But the NFL has other considerations when making the schedule, most notably television partners and conflicts at stadiums. Even in the UB model, they're unable to eliminate all inequities; Karwan said their model will still have issues like three road games in a row. It's tough to fit a 256-piece puzzle together. "There will be inequities due to the TV considerations and stadium availability and special requests by teams," Karwan said. "But what they may be able to do is think about these competitive imbalances – and I’m sure they do because I’m sure everybody thinks they’re against them – but they can spread them out over the years."  The NFL generates thousands of versions of the schedule through its computers to come up with the best one to satisfy everyone's desires. But in the end, there will always be a few teams that have a complaint. "Eventually they have to come out with the schedule," Karwan said. "It’s a mathematical impossibility to make everyone happy."  - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Proposed Los Angeles-area NFL stadium boasts lightning bolts (The Associated Press)

New designs for a proposed NFL stadium in the Los Angeles area include simulated lightning bolts for the San Diego Chargers and a flame honoring late Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis. The thoroughly revamped plans for the $1.7 billion joint stadium proposal by the two teams were released Thursday, just two months after the project and an initial set of designs were announced and two days after it received approval from the Carson City Council. The designs were presented in New York this week to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the league's committee on possibly relocating a team to greater Los Angeles. The flowing, metallic modern stadium design features a horseshoe-shaped seating arrangement that is open on one end.

Browns GM Ray Farmer won't trade everything for quarterback (The Associated Press)

Marcus Mariota appears to have it all: the pristine college career, the smarts, all the necessary tools to be an elite NFL quarterback. The former Oregon star would seem to be the complete package, and just maybe the answer for the Browns, who have been on a quest to find a franchise quarterback for years.

Telesco says Rivers will be Bolts' QB 'well into the future' (The Associated Press)

Citing his Catholic faith, San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco promised he wasn't going to lie during his pre-draft news conference. He then proceeded to speak effusively about quarterback Philip Rivers' future with the team. It's our plan and intent that he's our quarterback well into the future.'' It's been rumored for weeks that Rivers, who doesn't want to move to Los Angeles if the team does, could be traded to Tennessee so the Chargers can draft Marcus Mariota with the second pick.

Second LA-area city approves stadium; next move with NFL (The Associated Press)

The ball now belongs to the Raiders, the Chargers, the Rams - and the NFL. A second City Council has approved a second proposed pro football stadium in the Los Angeles area, putting local issues to rest in the NFL's return to the region and leaving the next move in the hands of the teams that would seek to relocate and the league that must give its final approval. The latest significant step was Tuesday night's 3-0 vote from the Carson City Council, which cleared the path for a $1.7 billion stadium that could become the shared home to the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders. It was intended to lure the NFL back to the Los Angeles area after two-decades without a team in the nation's second-largest media market.

Los Angeles suburb votes to approve NFL stadium plan (Reuters)

By Daina Beth Solomon LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Lawmakers in a Los Angeles suburb on Tuesday night voted to approve construction of a 70,000-seat National Football League stadium that could accommodate a proposed return of the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders. The three-member city council of Carson, about 17 miles (27 km) south of downtown Los Angeles, voted unanimously in favor of the plan to build the $1.7 billion arena, following a petition drive paid for by the two NFL teams, both of which previously played in Los Angeles. A few dozen people, many of whom were clad in Raiders and Chargers jerseys and waved team flags, packed the meeting, which was punctuated with chants of "Bring them back!" Nearly all of the roughly 20 people who spoke during the public comment portion of Tuesday's hearing expressed support for the project. A rival stadium project in the nearby city of Inglewood was unanimously approved by its city council in February.

2015 NFL schedule: Sunday, Monday nighters all about Chip Kelly, Colts, OBJ (Shutdown Corner)

The Sunday night and Monday night NFL schedule is where your eyes typically start, right? When the NFL releases the season schedule in full, as it did Tuesday night, you're naturally drawn to the night games — especially those on non-Thursdays. We expect great evening theater in our pro football. But some of those games tend to fall flat. Some now, when the schedule is brand new, and some later, after we've found out that everyone's Super Bowl favorite is actually a crappy team. That can happen as soon as September. But the league does its best to please its media partners — in this case, NBC for Sundays and ESPN for Mondays. (We'll discuss the Thursday schedule in a different blog entry.) Does it always work? No, which is why we feel we can point out to you where it falls flat. Here's a look at the week-by-week prime-time games for Sunday and Monday ... and which ones you actually should watch: WEEK 1 Sunday: New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys Monday: Philadelphia Eagles at Atlanta Falcons; Minnesota Vikings at San Francisco 49ers Our take: Not a bad way to start the first week of football, but ... maybe we expected a little more? Yes, we have a division rivalry with Cowboys-Giants, and maybe Odell Beckham Jr. (recurring theme alert) or Dez Bryant do something ridiculous; we're in good hands with Al Michaels on the call there. And the next night, we have the wack-a-doodle Eagles, and I like my Chip Kelly after dark, so that's good. But playing the Falcons? Kinda meh. And that's the undercard? The nightcap is a battle of a Jim Harbaugh-less 49ers against a maybe Adrian Peterson-less Vikings? Consider us underwhelmed a bit. Verdict: We rank them thusly: in chronological order — Giants-Boys, then the battle of the birds, followed by that game out west. If you skip the last one, no one will question why. WEEK 2 Sunday: Seattle Seahawks at Green Bay Packers Monday: New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts Our take:  Oh, yeah. This is what we came for. A rematch of the NFC title game, but this time it's in Green Bay. We're already asking our bosses if we can go. This is choice stuff here, and yet it's not a revenge — don't be that fan. If the Packers win, it's not going to make up for blowing a two-TD lead for a trip to the Super Bowl. Now that we have that out of the way ... you wonder if the Seahawks' banged-up secondary will be in top form this early in the season. Frankly, the Packers probably catch a mini-break getting the Seahawks this early in the season. As for the Monday game, this does't look super sexy, especially with the Jets having a new coach and being rudderless (as of now) as QB. But think of it this way: A good Jets defense got better, adding Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie, and a good Colts offense got better, adding Andre Johnson and Frank Gore. Verdict:  When we put it like that, the MNF game doesn't sound so bad, eh? We know Sunday will be great. Watch both games. Trust us.  WEEK 3 Sunday: Denver Broncos at Detroit Lions Monday: Kansas City Chiefs at Green Bay Packers Our take:  Oh. Yeah, that's our initial reaction. Look, these are four good teams on paper, and we could be treated to two very good matchups here. But Broncos-Lions in prime time? Hmm. We frankly thought this might be a Thanksgiving game or a Sunday game. We're not complaining with a Peyton Manning night game in his possible swan song season. We're not. It's just ... hmm. Same with the Monday game. Two straight at night at home for the Packers? Consider this: Many Packers fans make the drive up from Milwaukee, so that's two weeks in a row with games on school nights. Verdict:  Yeah, we're still watching both. They're just ... weird matchups, that's all. WEEK 4 Sunday: Cowboys at New Orleans Saints Monday: Lions at Seahawks Our take:  We still love the Lions? They lose three-quarters of their defensive line and Reggie Bush and they get two early prime-time games early on. Just a feeling here that this one might flop. The Seahawks fans get geeked for night games, though, so there's that. In the opening act, it's no slouch. You have America's Team heading down to the Big Easy — another town that loves getting well-lubricated before evening contests. These teams have had some nice battles in the past decade or so, so we can get behind that one. Verdict: If we're being honest, we're actually slightly more tuned up about the Cowboys-Saints game. WEEK 5 Sunday: 49ers at Giants Monday: Pittsburgh Steelers at San Diego Chargers Our take: Someone needs to explain this Niners thing to me. Are they going to be good? The Giants, we get — Beckham and Eli, and heck, I'll say it: I think this is a better team than people realize. But the 49ers aren't sneaking up on anyone, and we don't mean that in a good way. This is not, we'll safely predict, going to be up there with the 1990 NFC championship game or the 2002 wild-card madness game in this rivalry. Putting the Chargers on at night is dangerous. This could be the final season in San Diego, and that talk — moving to L.A. — could dominate the pre-game chatter, especially if Philip Rivers is not on the team. Maybe if Marcus Mariota becomes a Charger ... Verdict: Check back with us after the draft. We'll probably watch both, but we might need a decent reason why.

2015 NFL schedule: League releases the full regular-season slate (Shutdown Corner)

The long NFL offseason seems a little more palatable when there's a Week 1 opponent to look forward to. Each NFL team found out who it will start the 2015 regular season against, and the rest of the schedule too ( see the entire schedule here on NFL.com ). The opening game of the season will be the Pittsburgh Steelers taking on the defending champion New England Patriots on Thursday, Sept. 10 (a favorable break for the Patriots because the Steelers will be without All-Pro running back Le'Veon Bell due to suspension). The first "Sunday Night Football" game of the season, on Sept. 13, will be the New York Giants traveling to face the Dallas Cowboys. As usual, the NFL has a doubleheader scheduled for "Monday Night Football" in Week 1. The Philadelphia Eagles, one of the most interesting teams this season after a flurry of offseason moves, play at the Atlanta Falcons in the first game. The San Francisco 49ers will host the late Monday night game against the Minnesota Vikings and Adrian Peterson ... if Peterson is still with the Vikings. The NFL decided to go with three NFC vs. NFC games on Thanksgiving for the second straight season. The Eagles kick it off at the Detroit Lions, the Carolina Panthers will play at the Dallas Cowboys, and the third Thanksgiving game will be the Chicago Bears at the Green Bay Packers . That will be the Packers' first home Thanksgiving game since playing the Hammond Pros in 1923. There will be rematches of each conference championship game from last season, and each rematch will be on "Sunday Night Football." On Sept. 20, the Green Bay Packers will host the Seattle Seahawks on NBC, which is one of the most interesting games on the entire regular-season schedule. The Patriots will play at the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 18 in a prime-time game. There was also a welcomed change for the Denver Broncos in this year's schedule. For years, a CBS conflict with the U.S. Open tennis tournament prevented the Broncos from opening the season at home in their usual late-afternoon slot. The U.S. Open is moving to ESPN this year. So the Broncos will open the regular season at home against the Baltimore Ravens in the late-afternoon time slot, in one of the best games of Week 1. The NFL's regular-season schedule release has become a big day on the sports calendar, in many ways overshadowing the NBA and NHL playoffs. The schedule release was covered with two hours of programming on ESPN's networks, and there was a three-hour schedule release show scheduled for NFL Network. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Officials in LA suburb to consider NFL stadium proposal (The Associated Press)

The Los Angeles suburb of Carson could approve a $1.7 billion NFL stadium in the wake of a similar vote in nearby Inglewood - even though details haven't been worked out. The Carson City Council might decide Tuesday night to approve construction of a stadium or set a later public vote. The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders want to share a Carson arena if both teams fail to get new stadiums in their hometowns.

Los Angeles suburb to vote on NFL stadium plan (Reuters)

By Daina Beth Solomon LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Los Angeles suburb is expected to decide on Tuesday whether to approve plans to build a 70,000-seat NFL stadium that could house the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders, officials said. The city of Carson, about 17 miles (27 km) south of Los Angeles, has collected 14,000 resident signatures in support of building a $1.7 billion stadium, following a petition drive paid for by the two National Football League teams, which both played in Los Angeles before relocating. While Carson's City Council was expected to vote on the plan on Tuesday, it also has the option of putting it to voters this summer, city spokeswoman Margie Revilla-Garcia said. Meanwhile, a rival stadium project in the nearby city of Inglewood was unanimously approved by its City Council in February.

Which NFL player sold the most merchandise over the past year? (Shutdown Corner)

There are a few ways to judge an NFL player's popularity, but the amount of merchandise he sells might be the best way. And if you believe that to be true, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is the NFL's most popular player. Again. For the second straight season, Wilson led the NFL Players Association's player sales list. That takes into account all officially licensed products, including jerseys, Fatheads, ugly sweaters and bobbleheads. Wilson led all players in jersey sales and ugly sweaters (I had no idea NFL ugly sweaters was actually a thing until this list was released ... and I'm glad I didn't). Wilson's rise to stardom is easy to track: He's an exciting player, some fans probably relate to him overcoming odds to be a top quarterback at 5-foot-11, the Seahawks have won a ton with him and they have a fan base that loves to buy merchandise. Seahawks players like cornerback Richard Sherman (No. 7), running back Marshawn Lynch (No. 9), safeties Earl Thomas (No. 29) and Kam Chancellor (No. 30) also made the NFLPA's list. No. 2 behind Wilson isn't a big surprise; it's Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning (he led all players in bobblehead sales). Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant was the top non-quarterback, checking in at No. 6. Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel, who wasn't too impressive in two starts as a rookie last year, still finished No. 10 in sales. There are also a lot of people who bought LeSean McCoy's Philadelphia Eagles gear only to have it rendered obsolete when McCoy was traded to the Buffalo Bills this offseason. McCoy ranked 14th on the NFLPA's sales list. Here's the entire top 50 from NFLPA, based on sales from the 2015 fiscal year of March 1, 2014, through Feb. 28, 2015: 1. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks  2. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos 3. Tom Brady, New England Patriots  4. Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers 5. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers 6. Dez Bryant, Dallas Cowboys 7. Richard Sherman, Seattle Seahawks 8. J.J. Watt, Houston Texans 9. Marshawn Lynch, Seattle Seahawks 10. Johnny Manziel, Cleveland Browns 11. Jason Witten, Dallas Cowboys 12. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints 13. Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots 14. LeSean McCoy, Philadelphia Eagles 15. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts 16. Clay Matthews, Green Bay Packers 17. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys 18. Brandon Marshall, Chicago Bears 19. Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions 20. Odell Beckham Jr., New York Giants 21. Jordy Nelson, Green Bay Packers  22. Eli Manning, New York Giants 23. DeMarco Murray, Dallas Cowboys 24. Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers 25. Robert Griffin III, Washington Redskins 26. Nick Foles, Philadelphia Eagles  27. Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings 28. Jamaal Charles, Kansas City Chiefs 29. Earl Thomas, Seattle Seahawks  30. Kam Chancellor, Seattle Seahawks 31. Eddie Lacy, Green Bay Packers 32. Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins 33. Victor Cruz, New York Giants 34. Luke Kuechly, Carolina Panthers 35. Matt Forte, Chicago Bears 36. Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens 37. Patrick Willis, San Francisco 49ers  38. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers 39. Troy Polamalu, Pittsburgh Steelers 40. Demaryius Thomas, Denver Broncos 41. Julian Edelman, New England Patriots 42. Antonio Brown, Pittsburgh Steelers 43. Le’Veon Bell, Pittsburgh Steelers 44. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers 45. Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals 46. Stadium proposal for Chargers, Raiders qualifies for ballot (The Associated Press)

A proposed stadium near Los Angeles for the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders has moved a step forward. Organizers say enough petition signatures have been verified by election officials to qualify the proposal for the ballot in Carson, just outside Los Angeles. The proposal will go to the City Council, which could schedule an election or approve the plan without a local vote. The Raiders and Chargers are planning a shared stadium if both teams fail to get new stadiums in their current hometowns.

Wes Welker finally get a free-agent visit, with the Miami Dolphins (Shutdown Corner)

Things have been slow when it comes to Wes Welker news. Almost a full month into free agency, we finally have Welker's first known visit. It's with a team that knows Welker well: The Miami Dolphins. Welker's visit, which was reported by Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald and others, would reunite him with the team that he estabilshed himself in the NFL with. The Dolphins picked up Welker after he spent one game with the San Diego Chargers as a rookie, then traded Welker to the New England Patriots before the 2007 season. And from there Welker redefined the slot receiver position and became a borderline Hall of Fame candidate. No big. The Dolphins wouldn't be getting that Welker. Age, concussions and other injuries have seemingly caught up to Welker, which is what happens to every NFL player who is lucky enough to play as long as Welker has. Welker, who will turn 34 on May 1, has seen sigificant dips in receptions, yards and yards per catch each of the past two seasons. Last year, in 14 games, he had just 49 catches for 464 yards. When he didn't get any interest for the first few weeks of training camp, it seemed like he might be at the end of the line. But he's is still as good of a third-down receiver as the NFL has ever seen, and perhaps could help a team in a manageable role. The Dolphins have been looking at veteran receivers. They talked to Michael Crabtree and Greg Jennings recently. The Dolphins have young receivers Jarvis Landry and Kenny Stills on the roster. Landry did most of his best work in an impressive rookie season from the slot last year, but presumably he'd slide into a bigger role on the outside if the Dolphins signed Welker. Just because Welker visited with the Dolphins doesn't mean he'll get signed. But it would be nice to see one of the best receivers of the past decade get another shot. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? St. Louis Rams fans express opinions during NFL focus groups (The Associated Press)

Some fans of the St. Louis Rams say they want the football team to remain loyal to the city and not move to Los Angeles. Several fans expressed support Wednesday during several focus group sessions for a proposed open-air stadium to be built on the riverfront, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1GOQMMZ ) reported. ''I think the general consensus of the people there was yeah, if the Rams make a commitment to stay, they're willing to pay for the PSLs,'' said Dave Watson, a group member from Maryland Heights. ''Some of these people were willing to write checks for PSLs today.'' Each of the five sessions, conducted by the NFL in Maplewood, included 15-20 fans and were watched through a one-way window by the Rams' executive vice president.

St. Louis County pulls taxpayers from NFL stadium financing (The Associated Press)

St. Louis County taxpayers will not be asked to help pay for a new NFL stadium on the downtown riverfront. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1NBzV00 ) reports that last week, a senior aide to Gov. Jay Nixon told County Executive Steve Stenger's office that ''St. Louis County's participation would not be necessary in the stadium deal.'' Stenger had previously said that he would not support county tax funds being used to help build the stadium without a public vote. Financing for the new arena has been challenging due to a law that requires separate public votes in St. Louis and St. Louis County before taxpayer money can be used to build a stadium. Jim Shrewsbury, the Nixon-appointed chairman of the Edward Jones Dome Authority, said the move by Nixon may be part of the plan to convince NFL owners to keep the St. Louis Rams in the city.

Broncos acquire center Gradkowski from Ravens (The Associated Press)

The Denver Broncos continued addressing their needs along the offensive line by acquiring fourth-year center Gino Gradkowski from the Baltimore Ravens for 2016 draft considerations. Gradkowski started every game in Baltimore in 2013 but only saw action in eight games last year after the Ravens obtained Jeremy Zuttah from the Buccaneers. The 6-foot-3, 300-pounder appeared in every game during Baltimore's Super Bowl run his rookie season. Overall, he played in 40 regular season games and six playoff games with the Ravens, who selected him in the fourth round out of Delaware in the 2012 draft.
