National Football League roundup (Reuters)

(The Sports Xchange) - Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden moved Thursday to the precipice of declaring Robert Griffin III his starting quarterback for Sunday's game at Minnesota, a big step forward from the coach's dancing around the topic on Wednesday. "The progress that he has made has had us put him in with the ones and prepare to be the starter," Gruden said of Griffin, who returned to full practice on Wednesday after missing the last six-plus games with a dislocated left ankle suffered early in the Week 2 rout of Jacksonville. ...

Chargers cornerback Verrett out indefinitely (The Associated Press)

The San Diego Chargers will lose rookie cornerback Jason Verrett for at least one game and possibly longer with a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Verrett originally hurt his shoulder in a victory at Oakland on Oct. 12 - which he sealed with a last-minute interception - and aggravated it in a loss at Denver last Thursday night. He'll miss the game at Miami on Sunday, when the Chargers (5-3) will try to snap a two-game losing streak. The Chargers then have their bye.

Brady focused on Denver defense, not on Manning (The Associated Press)

Fans get another chance to gauge the relative greatness of Tom Brady and Peyton Manning when the quarterbacks meet for the 16th time. The New England Patriots star will have his eyes on an improved Denver Broncos defense that could test his limited skills at escaping the pass rush on Sunday. The Broncos (6-1) are the only team with two players having at least seven sacks - linebacker Von Miller with nine and defensive end DeMarcus Ware with seven. They've got the speed, speed-to-power,'' Brady said Wednesday.

Chargers-Dolphins Preview (The Associated Press)

Even though the banged-up San Diego Chargers are facing some adversity following back-to-back losses, linebacker Dwight Freeney believes they need to focus on the big picture. The Chargers look to get back on track Sunday while putting an end to a three decade-long road drought against the Miami Dolphins, who seek their first three-game winning streak in almost a year. San Diego (5-3) had been on a roll with five consecutive wins to claim the AFC's best record heading into Week 7 before losing 23-20 to visiting Kansas City on Oct. 19 and falling 35-21 at division-leading Denver just four days later. The Chargers also had a difficult time at winless Oakland on Oct. 12 before pulling out a 31-28 victory.

A man whose disappearance during last week's Denver Broncos game touched off an extensive search by family and friends told police he had ''his fill of football'' and walked and hitchhiked about 130 miles to a city in southern Colorado. Paul Kitterman, 53, was found safe Tuesday night in a parking lot in Pueblo after police got a tip that he was in the city. The construction worker looked tired and had trouble walking but a medical exam found him to be otherwise unharmed, Pueblo police Sgt. Franklyn Ortega said. Touchdown vacuums Gronkowski, Julius Thomas need some love, too (Shutdown Corner)

It's Brady-Manning Week! Yes, again. But we need to highlight the other standout players for the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots as they get set to face off in Sunday's marquee matchup in Foxboro in Week 9. The tight ends are not a bad place to start. [ Join FanDuel.com's $3M Week 9 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 26,405 teams paid ] On Sunday, we saw evidence that Rob Gronkowski has returned to prime form , nearly a year removed from last season's ACL injury, in Sunday's Patriots blowout of the Chicago Bears. Gronk was everywhere to the tune of nine catches for 149 yards and three touchdowns — uncoverable by by linebacker or safety the Bears tried to trot out there. And Julius Thomas, no slouch himself, is a key mismatch piece for Peyton Manning. You can (try to) cover Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, and that's fine and all. But that's when Julius Thomas beats you with an athletic move, and sometimes it's just so easy for him to score. Or so he says. We know Gronk likes touchdowns — with his three scores Sunday, that's now seven this season in eight games, and 49 in 58 regular-season games in his career. But look, too, at Thomas: He has nine touchdowns this season, with multi-TD games against the Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets; in his past 21 games, Thomas has 21 scores. The closer these players get to the end zone, the more they eat. Tom Brady and Manning are more than happy to feed these beasts. Look, if you're strictly arguing who the better player is — and even who is more valuable to their respective team's success — it's Gronkowski. When healthy, he is a devastating in-line blocker and dangerous receiver who can win with speed, power and competitiveness. No knock against Thomas, whose athleticism is off the charts, but he's just not the all-around player Gronk is. But could we see a scenario where Thomas is the better statistical performer in Sunday's game? No doubt. The Patriots have lost Jerod Mayo at linebacker and might not want to ask second-year linebacker Jamie Collins to match Thomas stride for stride. Might we see 6-4 cornerback Brandon Browner earn that assignment? After all, he was matched up with Bears tight end Martellus Bennett at times Sunday and could reprise that TE-coverage role again vs. the Broncos. That would leave Darrelle Revis on Demaryius Thomas, and either Logan Ryan or Alfonzo Dennard on Sanders. It'll be fascinating to watch. As for Denver, how do they deal with Gronk? The Broncos used safeties last Thursday to shadow San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates, and they had middling success with that. Although Gates only had five catches (on eight targets) for 54 yards, he did score two touchdowns, catch a 31-yard pass on 3rd and 20 to set up another score and also drew a key pass interference call. Ward has been targeted in coverage a number of times this season and certainly will be someone Brady seeks to go after. Might the Broncos ask ascending linebacker Brandon Marshall, who has been strong on the strong side, to get physical with Gronkowski at times? Perhaps. There is no one ideal matchup for the Broncos on him, so expect safety assistance no matter what. We've seen just how much these players mean not only for their respective teams but also against Sunday's opponent. The Patriots came back to win in overtime last season in Foxboro in a game Thomas missed but struggled to contain him (team-high eight catches for 81 yards) in the AFC title game as Manning hit him on several key passes, including a 37-yarder, their longest play of the game, midway through the fourth quarter as the Broncos started pulling away. Meanwhile, Gronkowski was a thorn in the Broncos' sides in the Patriots regular-season win, catching seven passes (on 10 targets) for 90 yards and a touchdown near the end of the third quarter to help fuel the amazing comeback. But he missed the playoff game with the knee injury, and the Patriots were forced to jam the ball into Julian Edelman, Shane Vereen and Austin Collins (yikes) way too often. Pick your position. Both are special players, and they'll be on display for sure on Sunday. They might not upstage the Manning-Brady show, but they might make it that much more electric. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Houston on pace for Chiefs' season sack record (The Associated Press)

Justin Houston wasn't supposed to be on the field at the end of the game. AP source: Addae showed concussion symptoms Friday (The Associated Press)

A person with knowledge of the situation says San Diego Chargers safety Jahleel Addae didn't show symptoms of a concussion until Friday afternoon, a day after having two scary reactions following hits in a loss at Denver. Addae's injury gained significant attention after he convulsed while remaining on his feet after a helmet-to-helmet hit late in the third quarter of a 35-21 loss at Denver. On the game's first play from scrimmage, Addae made a hit and immediately went limp on the ground.

Chiefs' Charles passes battery of concussion tests (The Associated Press)

Jamaal Charles has passed a battery of tests and does not show symptoms of a concussion, the Chiefs said Wednesday - one day after the star running back told a radio show he saw ''light bulbs'' after a hit in Kansas City's win over San Diego. Charles took a vicious blow from Brandon Flowers when he dove into the end zone in the Chiefs' 23-20 victory Sunday. Flowers received a concussion from the collision and missed the rest of the game, but Charles popped up and trotted off the field, where he was met by team trainers. If it was a concussion, I wouldn't remember the plays or remember none of my teammates' names or remember what sideline to go to,'' Charles said during the interview.

Manning won't laugh at a keep-away encore (The Associated Press)

Peyton Manning laughed when his receivers played hot potato with his record-setting memento last weekend. He won't be nearly as jolly Thursday night if the San Diego Chargers play keep-away from the Denver Broncos' high-powered offense as they did last year. The Broncos were held under 65 snaps just twice last season - both times by San Diego. The Chargers controlled the clock for more than 38 minutes in both games, including a 27-20 stunner at Denver on a Thursday night in December.

Emmanuel Sanders is speedy, not greedy. The Denver Broncos' fleet wide receiver insisted he wasn't lobbying Peyton Manning to throw him a fourth touchdown pass Thursday night. This is exactly what Sanders was talking about when he called Denver ''wide receiver heaven'' upon his arrival in free agency in the offseason.

After early trouble, Chiefs' Santo becoming clutch (The Associated Press)

Just about the worst thing that could happen to Chiefs rookie Cairo Santos came to fruition during his NFL debut, when he missed one of his two field-goal attempts while the man he replaced in Kansas City kept banging balls through the uprights. Ryan Succop was perfect on his four attempts that day, helping Tennessee to a 26-10 rout. Succop told Santos that he struggled so much one season that he thought he was going to be cut, and then set a Chiefs record with 22 consecutive makes. The coup de grace: A winning, 48-yarder with 21 seconds left in a 23-20 victory at San Diego last Sunday.

Manning's Broncos corral Chargers (AFP)

Five-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning added to his latest record by throwing three touchdown passes to Emmanuel Sanders in the Denver Broncos 35-21 victory over the San Diego Chargers. The win comes four days after quarterback Manning broke Brett Favre's record for most career touchdown passes in a 42-17 demolition of the San Francisco 49ers. Against the Chargers, Manning completed 25-of-35 passes for 286 yards and three touchdowns to bring his career National Football League touchdown total to 513.

Denver Broncos, coming off an AFC title, are clearly better in 2014 (Shutdown Corner)

DENVER – The Denver Broncos were really good in 2013. They were 13-3, didn’t lose any regular-season game by more than a touchdown, outscored teams by 207 points and won the AFC. They ultimately weren’t Super Bowl champion good, partially because they ran up against a great team that was even better, but they were very good last season. The Broncos are better this season. Clearly. Absolutely. “Oh yeah,” cornerback Chris Harris said without any hesitation when asked if the 2014 Broncos were better than the 2013 version. “We’re a total team.” [ Join FanDuel.com's $2.5M Week 8 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 21,905 teams paid ] The Broncos are the best team in football right now, by a wide margin. They’ve gone from a team with a historic offense and a so-so defense to a team with an even better offense on paper and a stellar defense. The Broncos gave up 61 yards rushing on Thursday night in a 35-21 win over the San Diego Chargers, and 23 of those yards came on the last play. They forced Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers into two interceptions. The offense was as good as ever, with a 100-yard rusher (Ronnie Hillman), two 100-yard receivers (Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas) and a quarterback who might win a sixth MVP award (you know who). Hold on, hold on. Fine, the Broncos are 6-1 and the best team in the NFL … right now. That doesn’t mean they’ll win the Super Bowl, and the postseason failures of the past two seasons - and of quarterback Peyton Manning most seasons in his career - follow them around everywhere. This great football they’re playing in October means nothing if they come up short of a championship again. Broncos defensive tackle Terrance Knighton wasn’t afraid to express that when asked if the Broncos are better this season. “We’ll see, we’ll see. If we hoist the trophy, then yes. If not, then no,” Knighton said. “It’s that simple. There’s nothing else we can do but win the Super Bowl. If we’re not hoisting that trophy at the end, then we’ll feel let down.” The good news for the Broncos is they should hoist that trophy. This is a much different team than the one that played in the Super Bowl last year. Between free agency and adding players back from injured reserve, the Broncos added seven top-flight starters this offseason. That's something very few teams in the NFL can pull off, yet the second-best team in the league last season did it. The major free-agent additions are all playing as expected. Cornerback Aqib Talib broke up two passes, including a brilliant one on a deep pass down the middle to Malcom Floyd. Defensive end DeMarcus Ware didn’t record any sacks on Thursday, but he drew a 10-yard illegal hands to the face penalty on a pass rush and has seven sacks this season. Strong safety T.J. Ward is one reason the Broncos allow the fewest rushing yards per game in the NFL. Sanders has proven to be an upgrade over Eric Decker; he had three touchdown catches against San Diego.

Peyton Manning kept it going Thursday night, throwing his 511th touchdown pass early in the second quarter to give the Denver Broncos a 7-0 lead over the San Diego Chargers. Manning was coming off an emotional four-TD performance Sunday night against San Francisco in which he surpassed Brett Favre as the NFL's touchdown pass king. Shutdown Corner NFL Power Rankings: The Oakland Raiders' scary 0-16 question (Shutdown Corner)

There are many stats that sum up how miserable the Oakland Raiders' 0-6 start has been, but we have something better than a statistic for that. Darnell Dockett. The injured Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman was at his trash-talking finest on Sunday, poking fun at the Raiders fans as the Cards sealed up their 24-13 win. Cardinals DE Darnell Dockett Trolls Raiders Fans With Sign On Whiteboard http://t.co/Kt9LTrbPWL http://ift.tt/1x2Xg3v — ThePostGame.com (@Post_Game) October 21, 2014 If you can't see it well, it's a hand-written message from Dockett to the fans reminding them that the Raiders are 0-6, and the worst team in the NFL. Sadly, both are indisputable facts at this point. Even worse for the Raiders, they just got past what is the relatively easy part of their schedule. And while it's ridiculously early under most circumstances to pose the question, it needs to be asked: Is 0-16 possible for the Raiders? [ Join FanDuel.com's $2.5M Week 8 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 21,905 teams paid ] Raiders fans are thinking that Cleveland might be a possible win, but this is a Browns team that will be playing at home and refocused after losing to the Jaguars. The Browns are a seven-point favorite, so a Raiders win can't be considered likely. But if the Raiders don't win this week, then when? Here's what's coming for the Raiders, who have the toughest schedule I've ever seen: Week 9: at Seattle Week 10: vs. Denver Week 11: at San Diego Week 12: vs. Kansas City Week 13: at St. Louis Week 14: vs. San Francisco Week 15: at Kansas City Week 16: vs. Buffalo Week 17: at Denver Oh my. Where's the win in there? The Raiders will be underdogs in every game from here on out, and probably by at least a touchdown in almost every one of those games. The home game against Buffalo might be less than a touchdown. Maybe the St. Louis game will be a tick under a touchdown. But that's about it. Odds are the Raiders get a win somewhere. It's mathematically tough for an NFL team to go 16 games without winning at least once, even if they're underdogs in all 16. And this team isn't without any talent – you'd hope all these old vets general manager Reggie McKenzie signed this offseason could get at least one win – but it still will be scary until they post that first win. I discuss the possibilities here: There's only one winless team remaining in the NFL. That's a pretty lonely place to be. And based on the schedule, it's possible the Raiders will be there for a while. Here are the post-Week 7 power rankings: 32. Oakland Raiders (0-6, Last Week: 31) The performance against the Chargers two weeks ago has to give them hope that a win is on the way. 31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-5, LW: 30) Depending on what kind of draft pick the Buccaneers could get back, it would make sense to trade Vincent Jackson. Seattle should be first in in line if Tampa Bay is serious about dealing him. 30. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-6, LW: 32) There's a huge difference between zero wins and one win. 29. Tennessee Titans (2-5, LW: 28) They lost to a bad team. A bad team with Colt McCoy at quarterback. 28. Washington Redskins (2-5, LW: 29) Jay Gruden didn't come out and say it, but by tabbing McCoy to start next week if Robert Griffin III isn't ready, he effectively said that the team no longer thinks Kirk Cousins can be an effective NFL starting quarterback. You wouldn't bench him for McCoy if you did. Maybe Cousins gets a chance to change that perception, but that's where we are now. 27. Atlanta Falcons (2-5, LW: 25) Julio Jones has 311 yards and no touchdowns in Atlanta's last four games. The Falcons are 0-4 in their last four games. These two sentences are closely related. 26. New York Jets (1-6, LW: 26) Here's one problem with the Percy Harvin trade: Are the Jets really going to get a good look at him before deciding if he's worth that $10.5 million base salary next season? It's really tough to learn an offense when you join a team right before Week 8 of the regular season. 25. Minnesota Vikings (2-5, LW: 24) A nice bright spot: Rookie Jerick McKinnon had 103 rushing yards against a good defense. That's not going to make them forget losing a game with one second left, but it was nice. 24. New York Giants (3-4, LW: 23) Eli Manning played well. They ran the ball well enough. The defense turned a big Tony Romo interception into a short touchdown. And they still lost by 10. That can't feel too comforting. 23. St. Louis Rams (2-4, LW: 27) I can't say this enough: Calling a fake punt on your own 18-yard line to ice a win over the defending champs is an all-time great call. It was a gamble but not reckless, because it's pretty clear the Rams knew based on Seattle's punt return scheme that they'd have that pass wide open. 22. Houston Texans (3-4, LW: 20) They really had Monday night's game under control, then it got away in such a hurry. And despite a terrible second quarter they lost by just a touchdown. They can't afford to drop games like that. 21. New Orleans Saints (2-4, LW: 19) That would have been an enormous win, getting a victory at a good Detroit team with virtually nothing from injured tight end Jimmy Graham. But now it's just a 2-4 hole they're in. 20. Chicago Bears (3-4, LW: 16) The Bears' offensive ranks: 17th in yards per game, 17th in yards per play, 18th in points scored. With all those weapons to work with, that's hard to comprehend. 19. Pittsburgh Steelers (4-3, LW: 21) For about 27 minutes of the first half against Texans, it looked like their season was in an irreversible slide. Maybe that turnover and scoring flurry will spark something.
