NFL TV ratings on the rise despite domestic violence fumble (Reuters)

By Eric Kelsey LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Americans are tuning into NFL football in greater numbers than last year, according to early season viewership figures, signaling the league's fumbled handling of domestic violence cases has not dented its overall popularity. Shutdown Corner NFL Power Rankings: Dallas Cowboys, please rise (Shutdown Corner)

Let's be serious for a moment here. And I have to kick the really over-the-top crazy Dallas Cowboys fans out of the room now so we can have a real conversation. OK, good. Now ... what in the heck is going on in Dallas? Look, you didn't see this coming, I didn't see this coming, nobody did. But now there's no getting around it: The Dallas Cowboys look good. They look great. Had Tony Romo not made some big Week 1 mistakes against the 49ers, they might be 4-0 with some quality wins. I just don't know how we got here. The Cowboys didn't add much in the offseason, and the defense lost Jason Hatcher, DeMarcus Ware and Sean Lee. Romo was coming off back surgery. They've been the epitome of mediocre for years. All of a sudden, they're good. Logically, it makes little sense. Sunday night's dominant win over the Saints was their statement that they're for real. Now, "for real" comes and goes in the NFL in 2014 as quickly as Jon Gruden compliments a mundane play on "Monday Night Football." Teams look great one week and incompetent seven days later. Nothing is permanent. But right now, the Cowboys deserve a huge bump up the rankings. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli would be my coach of the year vote at this point. He has been that good. The Cowboys' offense have reinvented itself by building around DeMarco Murray and a great run-blocking offensive line. They deserve all the credit you can give them. I guess that's the beauty of the NFL. Things that are completely unforeseen can actually happen. We're seeing it in Dallas. Here are the post-Week 4 power rankings: 32. Oakland Raiders (0-4, LW: 31) Head coach Dennis Allen got fired, and general manager Reggie McKenzie can't be far behind. Remember, they have the oldest roster in the NFL. Bad, bad, bad. 31. Jacksonville Jaguars (0-4, LW: 30) No one player is going to totally turn this team around, not even a huge upgrade at quarterback. They're just not good at all. But they're also very young and you'd assume they'll improve as this season goes on. 30. Washington Redskins (1-3, LW: 28) Or maybe I was right to be skeptical of Kirk Cousins. 29. Tennessee Titans (1-3, LW: 23) How in the world did they look so good at Kansas City in Week 1? That's the weirdest result of the NFL season so far, right?

Report: Dennis Allen informed by Oakland Raiders that he's been fired (Shutdown Corner)

Fox's Jay Glazer is reporting that the Oakland Raiders have informed Dennis Allen that he has been fired. Breaking: Raiders have just informed Dennis Allen he is fired. — Jay Glazer (@JayGlazer) September 30, 2014 Allen's Raiders dropped to 0-4 — their 10th loss in a row dating back to last season — after Sunday's 38-14 loss to the Miami Dolphins in London. [ Join FanDuel.com's $1.5 million Week 5 fantasy league: $25 to enter; $150,000 to first ] It has been widely speculated that either assistant head coach/offensive line coach Tony Sparano or offensive coordinator Greg Olson would replace Allen on an interim basis. This was the call of owner Mark Davis. General manager Reggie McKenzie might also be on the hot seat give the status of the Raiders' shaky roster. There had been a report by the Associated Press that Allen would be fired, but it was retracted. The Raiders returned from London on Monday but no announcement was made. Allen's contract had run through the 2015 season. We wrote Sunday that Allen was on borrowed time after an 8-28 record in his two-plus seasons as the Raiders' head coach. The Raiders are on bye in Week 5. They face the San Diego Chargers in Week 6. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti disputed a report suggesting he and other team officials tried to persuade the NFL to be lenient on Ray Rice after the running back was arrested in February for knocking out his then-fiancee in an Atlantic City elevator. Bisciotti, who rarely met with the media before the Rice saga, said he felt it necessary to respond to an ESPN story last week that described he, president Dick Cass and general manager Ozzie Newsome pushing Commissioner Roger Goodell for leniency for Rice. Bisciotti acknowledged that the backlash over the handling of the domestic violence case is by far the biggest crisis he's faced since taking over the team 14 years ago, but defended the integrity of his organization.

Shutdown Corner NFL Power Rankings: Taking stock of the 3-0 teams (Shutdown Corner)

We're down to three undefeated teams after just three weeks. And the three undefeateds are far from flawless. The Bengals are the best of the group. Their offense has been diverse, especially with quarterback Andy Dalton playing well and running back Giovani Bernard emerging as a star. They're an impressive 3-0, yet you're forgiven if you have some reservations about completely buying in. You remember the playoffs the last three years. Then there are the Cardinals and Eagles. The Cardinals have a great coaching staff led by Bruce Arians. That's the best way to explain them overcoming their massive defensive personnel losses and winning despite having to go with Drew Stanton at quarterback. Their schemes on both sides are covering up some issues. It's hard to imagine the Cardinals being a Super Bowl contender with Stanton at quarterback (or, let'e be honest, with Carson Palmer at quarterback) but 3-0 is a great start nonetheless. The Eagles are just a strange 3-0 team. They're literally unlike any 3-0 team we've ever seen. They're the first in NFL history to go 3-0 after being down by at least 10 points in each of their first three games. They're 3-0, they also have a good coach, but do you really trust a team that allowed the Redskins and Jaguars to take double-digit leads on their home turf? All three of the 3-0 teams are in the top 10, of course, but none have cracked the top two yet. Onto the post-Week 3 power rankings: 32. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-3, LW: 29) Unbelievable. 31. Oakland Raiders (0-3, LW: 32) There's something to be said for moral victories. They played well. Not a win, but I bet they feel a lot better than after the Week 2 nightmare against Houston.

Seahawks enter bye week after OT thriller (The Associated Press)

The defensive performance Pete Carroll got from his Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl last February led to the most lopsided championship game in more than 20 years. ''I really thought we played routes better and some things they threw at us, the perimeter screen game that's really just phenomenal for them, we just eliminated it and the guys just did a fantastic job and gave us a chance to play a dominant day of defensive football.'' Just how dominant Seattle (2-1) was on the defensive side got overshadowed by what Peyton Manning was able to accomplish in the final minute of regulation, leading Denver to a tying touchdown and 2-point conversion by going 80 yards in just 41 seconds and without any timeouts. Take away the Super Bowl and Manning had never been held to less than 17 points since taking over as quarterback of the Broncos.

Bills flunk litmus test in losing to Chargers (The Associated Press)

Buffalo was outplayed by the Chargers on both sides of the ball in a 22-10 loss Sunday. Buffalo's offense had difficulty mounting much of a threat in being limited to 113 yards and five first downs through the first half. The Chargers had two scoring drives that lasted 15 or more plays and ate up more than 7 minutes each. Buffalo was flagged 11 times for 101 yards, with three of those penalties negating a combined 60 yards offense.

Chargers running back Woodhead out for year (The Associated Press)

Chargers coach Mike McCoy says running back Danny Woodhead has a broken lower right leg and will miss the rest of the season. Woodhead was hurt on the first drive of the Chargers' 22-10 win at Buffalo. He was stopped after a 1-yard gain by diving defensive tackle Kyle Williams. Williams hit Woodhead directly in the right ankle, which appeared to twist underneath the player.

Chargers stay grounded in 22-10 win over Bills (The Associated Press)

Quarterback Philip Rivers wasn't kidding about the San Diego Chargers' resolve to run the ball this season. ''We can't turn this into, 'Oh, now we're going to be a 50-passes-a-game team.' It just doesn't work.'' Though Brown's numbers - 31 carries for 62 yards - weren't eye-popping, the mere threat of Brown running the ball kept the Bills' respected pass-rush on its heels in a game the Chargers (2-1) never trailed. Brown was happy to contribute, and his 31 carries were the most by a Chargers player since LaDainian Tomlinson had that many in 2006.

NFL Winners and Losers: Aaron Rodgers and Packers have bad day (Shutdown Corner)

The one thing nobody ever dreamed to worry about this season was the Green Bay Packers offense, especially since quarterback Aaron Rodgers was fully healthy again. The Week 1 struggles at Seattle were understandable, because the Seahawks’ defense is almost impossible to beat, especially at home. Sunday’s loss to the Lions is a little tougher to explain. Green Bay’s 19-7 loss was unlike practically any loss in the Aaron Rodgers era, or even back through the Brett Favre era. The Packers defense forced three turnovers and held the Lions’ potent offense to a manageable 19 points. And Green Bay had just 223 yards. After a first-quarter touchdown pass to tight end Andrew Quarless, the Packers didn’t score again, even against a Lions defense that didn’t look too great in a 24-7 loss to Carolina the week before. Green Bay just couldn't move the ball. The seven points scored were the fewest for the Packers in any game Rodgers has started and finished. His 162 passing yards were the fewest since Nov. 9, 2008 at Minnesota, and he didn't have a pass longer than 18 yards. In the Packers' three games, they scored 16 points in a loss to Seattle, seven points in a loss at Detroit, and had to pull off a big rally to beat the Jets after falling behind 21-3. There’s no reason to believe that the Packers just can’t play offense anymore. Eddie Lacy is a good back, Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb are top receivers and Rodgers is one of the best players in the NFL. Green Bay doesn’t have a death sentence at 1-2 with two road losses, of course. But it's not the way a team that hopes to get a first-round bye and get to the Super Bowl wanted to start. And they'll need to look at some offensive issues, which hasn't really been the case in Green Bay for about, oh, 22 years. Here are the rest of the winners and losers for Week 3 in the NFL: WINNERS Kam Chancellor It’s so fitting that Kam Chancellor, the under-appreciated Pro Bowler in Seattle’s secondary, made one of the biggest plays of his career and a few minutes later it was totally overshadowed. Chancellor doesn't get widespread attention like Richard Sherman or Earl Thomas, which just speaks to how good those two are, because Chancellor is one of the best strong safeties in the NFL. But it was the lesser celebrated Chancellor who made the biggest play on Sunday to seal Seattle's exciting Super Bowl rematch win against Denver. With the Broncos driving late in the fourth quarter, trailing 17-12, Chancellor made a great interception, leaping and picking off Peyton Manning. It's unclear what Manning saw on the play, because intended receiver Wes Welker was covered very well. Chancellor was lurking underneath and picked off the reigning MVP. That interception set up a field goal, which set up a dramatic game-tying drive by Manning. Seattle won in overtime. Chancellor’s interception was an enormous play by a fantastic player even though it wasn’t the biggest highlight by the end of the game. He’s probably used to that. Dallas Cowboys When Dallas fell behind 21-0, thanks in large part to Tony Romo’s pick-six to Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins, it would have been easy to pack it in. If you don’t respect what the Cowboys did the rest of the way, you don’t get how hard it is to win in the NFL. It doesn't matter that the Rams are down to quarterback Austin Davis, or that Rams tight end Jared Cook’s terrible end-zone drop was a very generous gift. The Cowboys’ rally to win 34-31 is impressive. It matched the biggest comeback win in franchise history. Romo came alive, throwing for a pair of second-half touchdowns. That was important, because he hadn’t looked great in the first 10 quarters of the season as he returned off back surgery. The defense made some plays, including a pick-six by linebacker Bruce Carter in the fourth quarter and a game-sealing interception by cornerback Morris Claiborne, the former sixth overall pick who was beaten repeatedly before that play. All of a sudden, the Cowboys are 2-1 and look much better than most preseason predictions (including mine) figured. Bruce Arians Arians didn’t get a chance to run his own team until he was in his 60s. With the job he’s doing in Arizona, it’s baffling it took that long. Arians has the Cardinals off to a great start this season, and it’s not like he has had an easy road. The team lost some key defenders, including Daryl Washington to suspension, Darnell Dockett to injury and Karlos Dansby to free agency. Running back Jonathan Dwyer is done for the season due to a domestic violence incident. And the last two games, the Cardinals have been without quarterback Carson Palmer. Despite it all, the Cardinals just keep winning. Even though Arizona fell behind early to the 49ers, the Cardinals rallied behind quarterback Drew Stanton and beat the 49ers 23-14 to improve to 3-0. Arians won the NFL coach of the year award in an unusual way in 2012, when he led the Colts while Chuck Pagano was battling leukemia. He should be in the running for his second such award in three seasons. He didn't get a head-coaching job until he was 60, but now he's one of the best in the business. Philadelphia Eagles The Eagles are, to say the least, are on a really weird path so far this season. Credit to Philadelphia for coming back and winning each of their first three games. But the Eagles might not want to do this high-wire act every single week. The Eagles fell behind to the Redskins, who got a great performance out of Kirk Cousins, but came back to win 37-34. It was fairly historic. The Eagles are the first team in NFL history to overcome at least a 10-point deficit and win each of their first three games. The Eagles also became the first team in NFL history to win each of its first three games despite giving up 17 first-half points in each game, according to CSN Philly. At least we know the Eagles have the mental toughness to come back and win if they fall behind. What we don’t know yet is if they’re capable of playing a good game from beginning to end. They might want to do that soon. Jaguars and Vikings fans For these two fan bases, the rest of your season just got a lot more interesting. While we don't like seeing injuries, Matt Cassel's foot injury should keep him out a while and it forces the Vikings to go with their best option at quarterback, rookie Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater looked competent, with 12-of-20 for 150 yards in a hostile environment at New Orleans. Blake Bortles is by far Jacksonville's best quarterback, and the Jaguars finally gave up the ridiculous plan of sitting Bortles all season for Chad Henne. The third pick of this year's draft will start next week. If nothing else, both teams will be much more interesting to watch. LOSERS Joe Philbin The Dolphins have officially wasted that great Week 1 performance against the Patriots. First with a dud at Buffalo in Week 2, but that was understandable with the Bills’ fans and players being so excited for an emotional home opener. Sunday’s dud is hard to overlook, and it'll bring about a lot of questions about Philbin's job security. The 0-2 Chiefs came in without Jamaal Charles and dominated the Dolphins. Miami's defense couldn’t stop Knile Davis (who, in fairness, is much better than your typical backup tailback) and the offense kept getting bogged down as quarterback Ryan Tannehill struggled again. Not only that, Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald suggested the players might be starting to revolt. One source says Dolphins players are "beyond furious. Irate" at defensive adjustments and game plan. Not good. At all. — Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) September 22, 2014 After all that has happened in Miami, with the way the team has taken a big step back the last two weeks, Philbin probably needs to turn things around pretty fast. Dennis Pitta You have to feel for Pitta, the Ravens tight end. He suffered a horrible injury last year when he dislocated his hip. Then he suffered the same injury again on Sunday. Pitta wasn’t hit when he suffered the injury. He just caught a pass and lunged awkwardly as he went to the ground. According to many reports, including Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports 1 , he dislocated his hip again. He’ll undergo more tests to see if there’s a fracture, as there was last year when he missed most of the season. It’s a sad situation for Pitta, for sure. It definitely put a damper on the Ravens’ last-minute 23-21 win at Cleveland. Without Pitta last year, the Ravens struggled to sustain drives with their intermediate passing game. It looks like the Ravens might have to try to figure out their offense without Pitta going forward this season, too. Gabe Jackson and Denarius Moore The Raiders had a real chance to at least tie Sunday's game at New England late, which is amazing. They were 14-point underdogs. But there they were, apparently cutting New England's lead to 16-15 on Darren McFadden's 6-yard touchdown with about a minute to go. But wait. Guard Gabe Jackson was called for a holding. That took the touchdown off the board. No surprise, but according to ESPN's Bill Williamson , Raiders coach Dennis Allen and several players disagreed with the call. The next play, rookie quarterback Derek Carr threw over the middle to Denarius Moore. Moore let the ball go right through his hands, it bounced off defensive back Logan Ryan and into the hands of defensive tackle Vince Wilfork. Ballgame. It won't be easy for the 0-3 Raiders to get wins this season. They had a chance to pull off an enormous upset on Sunday. It had to be a really long flight home for them all, especially Jackson and Moore. Chargers running game The San Diego Chargers got a complete 22-10 victory at Buffalo, one that puts them at 2-1 and made them look like a serious playoff contender. The problem is they're losing a key running back every week. Ryan Mathews went down with a knee injury last week. He'll be out a few weeks. The news isn't as good on Danny Woodhead, who suffered a high-ankle sprain with a fractured fibula, according to Fox Sports' Alex Marvez. That will likely end his season. The Chargers gave former Colts first-round pick Donald Brown a three-year, $10.5 million contract this offseason, but he didn't look very good at Buffalo with just 62 yards on 31 carries. And now the Chargers' depth at tailback is in really bad shape, at least until Mathews returns. So while the Chargers have a two-game winning streak, it has come at a price. - - - - - - - Frank Schwab is the editor of Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Jacksonville Jaguars turn ball over to Blake Bortles, who is now starting (Shutdown Corner)

Being outscored by 78 points pointed out the obvious for the Jacksonville Jaguars: A change at quarterback was needed. After losing 34-17 and 41-10 in Weeks 1 and 2, and facing a 30-0 halftime deficit in Week 3 against the Indianapolis Colts, the Jaguars finally made the decision to bench Chad Henne and make the move to first-round pick Blake Bortles. Bortles gave Jaguars fans a brief reason to cheer upon entering the game to start the third quarter after Henne (4-of-7 passing, 33 yards) couldn't lead the team to a single first down in the first half. Although Bortles missed on three of his first four passes, he did hit fellow rookie Allen Robinson for a 21-yard gain — the team's longest play of the game to that point — and help gain two first downs on his first possession under center before punting. Of course, Bortles led the Jaguars on a solid drive in his next effort — and actually got them on the scoreboard. Bortles gets huge hand. Stood tough in pocket on third down. #Jaguars get 41-yard FG from Scobee. — Hays Carlyon (@HaysCarlyon) September 21, 2014 Hey, it's progress, right? It's also time for Bortles to take over the starting gig from here on out. Head coach Gus Bradley said after the game that despite the rookie's up-and-down game, he had seen enough from Bortles (14-of-24 passing, 223 yards, two TDs, two INTs) to announce that he'd be starting next week against the San Diego Chargers. Jaguars HC Gus Bradley said as week went on it felt clearer that Blake Bortles' body of work made him ready. — John Oehser (@JohnOehser) September 21, 2014 - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Week 3 injury report: RBs Foster, Pierce out; WRs Jackson, Allen active (Shutdown Corner)

Two starting running backs are out, but two big-name banged-up receivers will give it a go in Week 3. Houston Texans running back Arian Foster and Baltimore Ravens running back Bernard Pierce both have been ruled out for Week 3. [ Join FanDuel's $1.25 million, 1-week fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 11,490 teams get paid ] Rookie Alfred Blue is expected to start in Foster's place for the Texans against the New York Giants. Justin Forsett figures to start for the Ravens against the Cleveland Browns. Foster is dealing with a balky hamstring, and Pierce has a thigh injury. On the good-news side of the ledger for injuries, Washington Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson is going to get his chance to go against his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, despite a shoulder injury he suffered last week. Jackson was released by the Eagles without much notice this offseason, with his former head coach, Chip Kelly, saying the move was for football reasons . [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: It's still not too late to join a league today! ] The Redskins, of course, have deactivated quarterback Robert Griffin III, who suffered a dislocated ankle. It will be Kirk Cousins who gets the start for the Redskins on Sunday. San Diego Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen, who was limited in practice this week with a groin injury, is active Sunday against the 2-0 Buffalo Bills. In other Week 3 NFL injury news: • For the Browns, a surprise: Tight end Jordan Cameron, who was not expected back until after the team's Week 4 bye, is active Sunday against the Ravens. He is playing through pain with a shoulder injury. • The St. Louis Rams will start Austin Davis again at quarterback, with Shaun Hill still working back from a thigh/quad injury. Interestingly, both quarterbacks are active and they are the only two quarterbacks on the active roster against the Dallas Cowboys. Rams receiver Tavon Austin (knee) is inactive. • The Cowboys will be without linebackers Rolando McClain and Justin Durant against the Rams. Bruce Carter might have to be shifted into McClain's middle linebacker spot, and the Cowboys could be forced to play a lot of nickel Sunday. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Woods missed practice Thursday, but returned on a limited basis Friday. After practice Friday, Woods was optimistic about his chances. ''I feel pretty good,'' Woods said.

Heading cross country hard for West Coast teams (The Associated Press)

The Oakland Raiders have to deal with more than just Tom Brady and Darrelle Revis at New England on Sunday. ... It feels a little odd.'' The Raiders are trying to snap a 14-game losing streak in the Eastern time zone. The four West Coast teams, which annually log 25,000 air miles, are a combined 43-83 in the Eastern time zone over the last decade, according to STATS LLC. Only the San Diego Chargers, who visit Buffalo this weekend, have a respectable record at 17-18. The rest are abysmal: Raiders (5-28), San Francisco 49ers (10-18) and Seattle Seahawks (11-19).

FANTASY PLAYS: Injury bug strikes fantasy lineups (The Associated Press)

The second week of the NFL season was downright diabolical to fantasy owners who saw a wave of injuries and suspensions gut their rosters. Adrian Peterson was deactivated, Jamal Charles went down on his second carry with an ankle injury, and A.J. Green exited the game with a foot injury without recording a single catch. Doug Martin and Carson Palmer were late scratches, and Ryan Matthews and Robert Griffin III were carted off the field with injuries that will cost them each several weeks. Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery were hobbled to the point that it was pure guesswork by lineup deadlines as to whether they would play or be effective on Sunday night.

With the league's longest active playoff drought hanging over them, the Buffalo Bills are far from content with their 2-0 start. The Bills enter Sunday seeking their longest win streak since last opening 3-0 in 2011 as they host the San Diego Chargers, who won't have Ryan Mathews available for the foreseeable future. Buffalo has made strides toward returning to the postseason for the first time since 1999, but its players see plenty of ways to improve. Buffalo settled for a field goal in its only red-zone trip of the second half in a 23-20 overtime victory over Chicago to open the season.

Ranking the 0-2 teams in terms of most likely to make the playoffs (Shutdown Corner)

It's an NFL blogging rite of passage. After two weeks, we must look forward and make grand judgments based on what we've seen for one-eighth of the season. Granted, history backs us up quite a bit that starting 0-2 is, well, not likely to portend good things. Since the 2007 season, there have been 59 teams that started 0-2 — and a mere four made the postseason. The Carolina Panthers did it last year, winning the NFC South. Before that, it had been since 2008 that another 0-2 team made it, when two did. Of course, it's not necessarily a death knell, either. After all, the 2007 New York Giants started 0-2 and won the Super Bowl over the 18-0 (to that point) New England Patriots. So we'll put on our positive faces and try our best to make a case, in descending order, for each of the seven 0-2 squads. But we'll be honest: If more than two make it to the postseason, it would be a stunner. 1. New Orleans Saints — We're still believers. They've lost two games by a combined five points on the road, with both losses happening on the final drive. That last part isn't any consolation prize that makes us feel better, but the Saints did suffer three of their five losses last season by one score. And all five losses were on the road, as the team went 8-0 at the Superdome. With eight games left at home, we like those odds. Still, the sight of blown coverages, missed tackles and terrible angles to the ball defensively are a bit unnerving, far more so than any fabricated or imagined tension between Sean Payton and Rob Ryan. Those guys are fiery enough to argue over what temperature a steak should be cooked, so pass on that narrative. Instead focus on a multifaceted offense that's just starting to crank and a defense that should find its bearings with better pressure and a more disciplined approach. 2. Indianapolis Colts — They benefit from the fact that the AFC South remains a work in progress, at best. The Houston Texans might be 2-0, but they had that same record last season and we know how that ended. The Tennessee Titans, world beaters in Week 1, fell flat in Week 2. The Jacksonville Jaguars ... ugh, don't get me started on the team that I was pumping up as one of the league's potential surprises this season. So the Colts can't feel too awful about the 0-2 start against two playoff teams from a year ago, even if Monday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles saw them get very conservative when it mattered most . Andrew Luck is good enough to lead this team to another double-digit win season, and the schedule softens up considerably from this point. The defense has a host of issues, especially with no Robert Mathis to bail it out, and the offensive line is not going to dominate anyone. But there is still enough of a collective lot here to forecast a winning season, and perhaps a postseason spot.

Shutdown Corner NFL Power Rankings: So who should be No. 1? (Shutdown Corner)

If you knew nothing about the NFL before Sept. 4, were dropped in and watched the first two weeks and had to determine the best team in the NFL just off that, the answer would be easy. It's the Cincinnati Bengals. It's not particularly close, either. In Week 1, the Bengals played very well in a road win against the Ravens. Four days later, the Ravens looked phenomenal against the Steelers. The Falcons couldn't be stopped against the Saints in a Week 1 win. Then Atlanta played Cincinnati, and the Falcons didn't score until deep into the fourth quarter when the game's result was not in doubt anymore. Also, the Bengals won that game without their best player, receiver A.J. Green, who left early with a toe injury. The Bengals' defense looks like one of the best in the NFL. The offense has a lot of playmakers. They have been dominant in both games. So are they the best team in the NFL? I'll explain here: I don't do these power rankings in a one- or two-game vacuum. If you want something that ranks teams in exact order of their win-loss record, this link has the only power rankings you'll need. It's not always that easy. I don't think 2-0 Houston would beat 0-2 New Orleans on a neutral field, and I doubt you do either. Similarly, I'm not quite ready to buy into Andy Dalton and Marvin Lewis being the leaders of the best team in the NFL. But they're creeping up. A few more dominant weeks like the first one, and they'll be in the discussion. They've clearly moved into the small group of teams that is clearly good enough to be called a Super Bowl contender. But I don't think they should be No. 1. So who is, after the 49ers' loss? Let's go to the post-Week 2 power rankings. 32. Oakland Raiders (0-2, LW: 30) They're likely going to be underdogs in each of their last 14 games. It's hard to figure out how Dennis Allen saves his job.

Actual football games were supposed to provide some respite for the NFL from off-field headlines created by Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson and drug policies. Robert Griffin III, Jamaal Charles, A.J. Luckily for Washington, Kirk Cousins came in and threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-10 romp past Jacksonville.

An embattled NFL reeling from off-field brutality issues by stars received more bad news with numerous injuries to key players in the second week of an already tumultuous campaign.
