Health scare puts Super Bowl in perspective for Fox (Reuters)
By Julian Linden NEW YORK (Reuters) - Denver Broncos head coach John Fox is making his third trip to the Super Bowl this weekend. If his past experiences count for anything, Fox would appear to have an edge over his Seattle Seahawks counterpart Pete Carroll, who is going to the big game for the first time. But Fox does not buy into that notion, noting that his two previous trips to the National Football League's title game both resulted in losses. Asked directly what he learnt from his past Super Bowls, Fox's reply was blunt: "That you don't want to lose." Winning means everything in the cut-throat, results-driven world of the NFL but a mid-season health scare has given Fox a new sense of perspective about Sunday's match-up at MetLife Stadium.

NFL, players see progress in tackling concussions (Reuters)
They should not see a player lying prone on the field after the sickening crack of a helmet-to-helmet hit, thanks to an NFL effort to reduce player concussions. With a growing body of research showing that hits to the head over years on the football field can lead to early dementia, violent behavior and other mental problems later in life, league officials, former players and medical experts have been working to reduce the number of concussions on the field. Medical officials with the National Football League said changes including banning helmet-to-helmet hits and more aggressively monitoring players' condition on the sidelines have paid off: the number of concussions suffered by players dropped 13 percent in the 2013 season from 2012. The latest data was encouraging to Shawn Wooden, 40, a retired defensive back who spent most of his career with the Miami Dolphins and is one of 4,500 former players suing the NFL, saying the league knowing downplayed the risk of concussions to player health.

2014 NFL Mock Draft: Manziel back on top (Comcast SportsNet Houston)
With the first mock draft I made mid-season, I pegged Johnny Football going to the Texans with the top pick. I thought Manziel had the highest ceiling amongst quarterbacks, but his personality and size would ultimately keep him out of consideration this high. That said, NFL front offices are falling for Johnny Manziel and his stock couldn't be higher entering the early portion of the draft process. I still think Jadeveon Clowney is the best player, but Manziel will also be a star in the NFL.

St. Louis Rams owner buys potentially stadium-sized chunk of land in Los Angeles (Shutdown Corner)
Are the St. Louis Rams taking the first step to return to Los Angeles? Rams owner Stan Kroenke has bought a large tract of land in Inglewood, California — about 12 miles from downtown L.A. — that potentially could be used for an NFL stadium, the Los Angeles Times' Sam Farmer is reporting. Kroenke purchased a 60-acre parking lot located between the soon-to-be-shuttered Hollywood Park racetrack and The Forum that originally was owned by Wal-Mart but was sold when the superstore they wanted to build was not publicly approved. Madison Square Garden Co., which owns The Forum, had wanted to buy it but didn't act fast enough. Interestingly, Kroenke is a former Wal-Mart board member as the son-in-law of former Wal-Mart co-founder Bud Walton.

Getting to the Super Bowl is not easy for many (The Associated Press)
They are former kids who played in their backyards and dreamed of scoring the winning touchdown, making the big play on defense and somehow sharing in the spotlight of helping a team win the Super Bowl. Not all dreamers get to the NFL, and certainly, many who get to football's highest level don't get the chance to play in the Super Bowl. There are at least a dozen who will be participating for the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks in Sunday's Super Bowl who toiled for at least eight years in the NFL before getting a chance to play for the title. Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey is the poster child.

Richard Sherman, Peyton Manning and Other Bold Predictions for Super Bowl XLVIII (Yahoo Contributor Network)
COMMENTARY | When predicting which two teams would reach this point at the beginning of the season, both the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks were trendy choices. And on Sunday, they will square off for the final game on the 2013-14 NFL calendar. The Broncos and Seahawks come in as their conference's respective top seed, and also mirror images of one another -- as Denver boasts the league's best offense (first in both yards and points scored), while Seattle can hang its hat on being the NFL's top defense (first in both yards and points allowed). Here are four bold predictions for Super Bowl XLVIII.

Overlooked Denver Broncos Defense May Decide Super Bowl (Yahoo Contributor Network)
COMMENTARY | Start with soon-to-be league-MVP Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos' offense, which only happens to be the highest-scoring offense in NFL history. They'll be opposed by the Seattle Seahawks' defense, which -- led by the Legion of Boom secondary -- allowed the fewest points and yards in the league this season. Then there's the Seahawks' offense, which wasn't a league pacesetter by any means but does feature the notable likes of Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch and Percy Harvin. But the unit playing the best entering Super Bowl XLVIII actually is none of the above.

Greg Cosell’s Super Bowl Preview: Breaking down Denver’s screen pass to Demaryius Thomas (Shutdown Corner)
This week we’re going to look at a staple play from each of the Super Bowl offenses, and we’ll start with the Broncos and one of their most important plays, the wide receiver screen to Demaryius Thomas. The Broncos will run the screen to Thomas against the Seahawks in the Super Bowl. It's like a run play for the Broncos. They throw a high-percentage pass behind the line to Thomas and try to get blockers out in front of him, hoping it turns into a big play. On Sunday, the Broncos might change how they get to the screen by using a new formation or motion before the snap. The bottom line is they run the receiver screen in many different ways, which is why it works. You add wrinkles to staple plays. Let's look at an example of a wrinkle they used earlier in the year. Against the Redskins in Week 8, Thomas was lined up wide. Eric Decker and Wes Welker were lined up in a minus split (close to the formation – and I’ll explain why that’s important in a moment). The back was in a pistol look behind Peyton Manning. The slot corner blitzed. The Broncos’ linemen, Decker and Welker got out in front of Thomas and he went for a 35-yard touchdown. The Broncos’ next game was against the Chargers, and they knew San Diego saw this play. But it’s one the Broncos want to run. So Denver presented it differently. Thomas started in the backfield on his screen against San Diego. Everything else was the same. The back lined up in the same spot and Welker and Decker had the same minus splits. And believe it or not, the slot cornerback blitzed on this play, too. When Thomas starts in the backfield, the defense says, “Wow, Demaryius Thomas isn’t where he usually is.” They then have to go through mental adjustments in a very short period of time. You’re playing Manning and he could snap it at any time. All it takes in the NFL is half a beat of hesitation, and you can lose. The Broncos are trying to create that moment of hesitation. No NFL team reinvents the wheel. They have run these plays since OTAs. They just made a small adjustment. It makes the picture a little different to the defense, which can’t react as quickly. It’s not an accident Decker and Welker are minus splits in a bunch look on Denver's screen plays, because that backs the defense off. You can’t have two cornerbacks at the same level; they can’t both be in press position. By the initial look they get the defense backed off. They’re immediately creating space. Then they put Thomas in motion. Again they got Welker and Decker and three offensive linemen out front as the play developed (and on the play against the Chargers, left tackle Chris Clark performed a nifty spin move off the line). The Broncos do a great job getting linemen in front of Thomas. So you’re getting five blockers out in front with a backed-off defense. The beauty of the Broncos' receiver screen is its simplicity. What can the defense do? If the defender across from Welker goes immediately in the passing lane and they fake the screen to Thomas, you’ve lost a defender and they’re going to throw a touchdown over the top. So nobody is going to do that. Screens can be stopped when the defense can press, but because of the bunch alignment of Decker and Welker, that option is eliminated. For the defense it’s all about rallying to the football once the catch is made. You’re not preventing the completion. You’re trying to make this a 6-yard play instead of a touchdown. And Thomas is a perfect player to run this play. He’s a big, fast athletic mover. He’s a strider with some lateral quickness. If you watch him run with the ball, he’s fluid. He moves like a smaller guy. He doesn’t run like a 6-3 230-pound guy. Against the Chargers, he broke the screen for a 34-yard touchdown. It’s not a coincidence that these plays came from roughly the same spot on the field. That tells you this is a spot they look to do this. That’s a tendency. If you’re Seattle preparing for the Super Bowl, you’re telling your players, “When they get in this area, this is an alert. We have to be aware of this play.” The Broncos will run this play. And they’ll run it with the other two receivers in those tight splits. It’s a staple of what they do. Want to watch the Big Game ads? Check them out here: - - - NFL analyst and NFL Films senior producer Greg Cosell watches as much NFL game film as anyone. 2014 NFL Draft: Big Board for the Tennessee Titans (Yahoo Contributor Network)
COMMENTARY | 30 teams have already turned there attention to the 2014 NFL Draft, and in a week the final two teams will start preparing for that date in May. The way NFL teams figure out which player to draft is generally by using their own blend of grading and positional need. Why the Titans might want him: With teams like the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, Oakland Raiders, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers all needing a pass rusher there is virtually no chance for the Titans to make this pick.

Rotoworld's 2014 NFL Mock Draft (Comcast SportsNet Houston)
If you do not have a quarterback, you have to go and get one. With that said, I think Texans' head coach Bill OBrien waits until the second day, or trades back in to the first-round, to get his quarterback. Romeo Crennels odd front defense (I am attempting to stay away from 3-4/4-3) has been categorized as traditional in the past, but he told reporters he expects to be more versatile moving forward. After hearing some of the buzz over the last two weeks, I would be surprised if Robinson is not the first offensive lineman selected in May. The NFL obsesses with upside, and even though I prefer Texas A&M's Matthews as a player right now, the draft is not focused on the following seasons success.

Seattle Seahawks vs. San Diego Chargers: The Super Bowl that Could Have Been (Yahoo Contributor Network)

As the season began to unfold we saw coach Mike McCoy shake the rust off an offense that former coach Norv Turner had mishandled and mismanaged for years. In Week 12 against the Kansas City Chiefs, they gave up their usual 400 yards and allowed a season-high 38 points.
